Best Buy continues exclusively white products with the Streak

Dell Streak in White

Shortly after the launch of the EVO 4G Best Buy claimed an exclusive on the phone. Well, not the phone itself, but the white version of the phone. Until just recently if you wanted an EVO in white instead of black you had to go to Best Buy. Now Best Buy has managed the same deal with the Dell Streak.

It seems that in the near future those in the US who want a Streak in a color other than black can simply walk into a Best Buy to get one. If you live outside the US it looks as if you might have a hard time getting ahold of a white Streak. Other territories lie the UK get the option of red, however, which looks a bit nicer to me.

According to Streak Smart, the white Streak has a silvery-white finish with something of a shimmer. Unfortunately that doesn’t come out in the photos at all. The white finish on the back looks a bit plain, and possibly a bit ugly in the photos. The appearance on the front, however is nice with the white framing the black of the buttons and the screen. If the Streak turns out to be anything like the EVO 4G, you can expect the white version to come to other retailers just around the time when the tech world has moved on to another device, if that hasn’t already happened with the Streak.

Hulu Plus fully launches, now $7.99 a month

Section: Video, Content, Video Providers, Web, Online Music/Video

Hulu Plus
Since the first launch in July, Hulu Plus has been an invite-only preview, with the service costing users $9.99 a month. Today Hulu Plus has finally launched for everyone, at a somewhat cheaper price per month.

For weeks there have been rumors of a $4.99 price point coming for Hulu Plus. Unfortunately that price is still out of reach. The price has dropped just two dollars, coming down to $7.99 a month, which is still cheaper than Netflix. Of course the service still has ads, but it’s better to have ads than to not have the service at all.

Those who were in the Hulu Plus preview period will be refunded the $2 difference for each month they subscribed. New users of the service will get one week free, and an extra two weeks free for every referred friend who signs up. There’s also a few deals for buying new products that have Hulu Plus. Buying a new Hulu Plus-enabled Sony Bravia device will net you 11 free weeks, while a new Roku device will give one month free.

Hulu also announced that it will continue adding new backlogs to Hulu Plus. It plans to add all 36 seasons of Saturday Night Live by the end of the year. Past seasons of Monk, Battlestar Galactica and Psych were also added recently.

Gadgetell Hands On: Netgear Push2TV adapter for Intel Wireless Display technology

Coming back with another Gadgetell hands on gallery, this latest is the Netgear Push2TV for Intel Wireless Display technology. And similar to the Toshiba Satellite E205 in the previous post—this was provided to us by Intel for testing. That said, just because Intel sent this to us does not mean we have to say nice things. Well, that is unless we actually want to say nice things. Bottom line, they provided the products and we are going to tell it how it is. Needless to say, these have just arrived so the opinions are still at a minimum. So while we are getting this setup and start playing we did want to share some images of what the unit looks like.

Don’t forget to check out our hands-on gallery for the Toshiba Satellite E205. And as we get this setup and have more to pass on we will offer more posts detailing the setup process and our experiences once it is all up and running.

Gadgetell Hands On: Toshiba SatelliteE205 notebook with Intel Wireless Display technology

Intel was kind enough to send over a shiny new Toshiba notebook and the Netgear Push2TV so we could test out their Intel Wireless Display technology. And for those not reading into the language in that previous statement—Intel provided the notebook and Push2TV. That said, they told us we could share whatever we wanted. In other words, Intel provided the products, but the opinions are all ours. With that we should point out that we do not have all that much to offer just yet, but that is only because the toys have only recently appeared in the office. Still, I wanted to share some images of the devices that we got in, because if nothing else the Toshiba notebook and Netgear Push2TV are nice looking. The notebook is a Toshiba Satellite E205 which features goodies such as a 14 inch display, Intel Core i5 processor, 500GB hard drive, 4GB of RAM and of course—the Intel Wireless Display technology. And for those who may not have been as familiar with the Wireless Display setup, here is a bit more about how it works and what you can do.

The Technology: PC to TV. Get the Bigger Picture

Earlier this year, Intel introduced its 2010 Intel® Core™ Processor family with Intel® Wireless Display technology available in select laptops. Intel® Wireless Display is the hassle-free, wireless way to enjoy personal and online content on a big screen. And it's easy—many laptops have just one touch key to turn on Intel's Wireless Display, ending unplanned trips back and forth to the electronics store for missing cords or adapters, unless you like that sort of thing.

This technology is a great way to stay connected with family and friends throughout the holiday season and enjoy your content on a large HDTV instead of crowding around a laptop screen. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

  • Watch the latest TV shows, news, and sports on your HDTV
  • Bring your social media or YouTube videos to life
  • Share pictures and videos with family and friends
  • Enjoy a Netflix movie
  • Connect with relatives via Skype
Don’t forget to check out our hands-on gallery for the Netgear Push2TV. And as we get this setup and have more to pass on we will offer more posts detailing the setup process and our experiences once it is all up and running. Product [Toshiba Satellite E205]

Did Google just launch an online boutique?

Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking, Web Apps, Websites, Google

Google's Boutique

So I was browsing through my feed reader when I chanced upon an item announcing about the launch of Boutiques, a new way to shop for fashion online. I would have passed through the item when I noticed that it was posted from the Official Google Blog. I checked feed’s source and was surprised to be brought to the Official Google Blog. There it was, an official Google blog post introducing boutiques.com.

What is Boutiques.com? According to Google, it’s a personalized shopping experience that allows you to find and discover fashion goods. You can either create your own curated boutique or through a collection of boutiques curated by so called taste-makers, a group composed of celebrities, stylists, designers and fashion bloggers. In addition boutiques.com makes use of computer vision and machine learning technology in visually analyzing your taste to match it to items you would possibly like.

Boutiques.com also has other features, including:

  • advanced search filters by genre, silhouette, pattern, color families and sizes.
  • inspiration photos of styled mannequins which you can compare your outfit with
  • complete the look for recommendations on what to pair with your dress
  • visual search displaying color, shape and pattern of various items to help you find similar items visually
  • boutiques on your tablet through a native iPad app which is now available from the App Store.

Boutiques.com is currently available for the U.S. market only. Right now, the site only features women’s fashion, but of course if you’re a male, you can still browse the site. Who knows, you might find the perfect Christmas gift for your wife or special someone from the site.

Reducing agony in flying: Hipmunk and ITA Software team up

Section: Web, Web Apps, Websites

hipmunk enters deal for more flight info for online flight bookingITA Software and Hipmunk are now working together to provide something new in flight search on the web.  Rating flights by how much “agony” they cause and an intriguing display method, Hipmunk is raising some eyebrows.  ITA Software provides quick access to it’s popular shopping system used by many other flight search sites.

What set Hipmunk apart is agony.  Defined by the company as a “combination of price, duration and number of stops”; they’ve hit the nail on the head.  How many times have you been suckered into a sweet deal only to realize you’re flying miles out of your way and trading lots of time for just a few bucks?  It happens to me more than I’ll admit.

By displaying results in a unique method that looks to put users needs ahead of advertisers.  A grid is presented to users with price and time on the axis.  Users can quickly sort and filter results.  It’s an impressive new way to come at flight selection.

“Hipmunk is a website that's reinventing the user experience for flight search. Launched in August 2010, Hipmunk has already referred millions of dollars worth of successful bookings. Hipmunk was started by Steve Huffman (co-founder of Reddit) and Adam Goldstein (a published technical author at age 16). Hipmunk is based in San Francisco, California.”

ITA provides data to Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Bing, Continental Airlines, Hotwire, Kayak, Orbitz, Southwest Airlines, TripAdvisor, United Airlines, US Airways, Virgin Atlantic Airways, and others.

McAfee: Malware up, Spam down

Section: Computers, Security

McAfee reported their Q3 Threat Report on security issues on the web.  The bottom line is malware is up, way up and spam is down.  In fact, “an average of 60,000 new pieces of malware identified per day, almost quadrupling since 2007” while spam hit a 2-year low.

"Our Q3 Threat report shows that cybercriminals are not only becoming more saavy, but attacks are becoming increasingly more severe," said Mike Gallagher, senior vice president and chief technology officer of Global Threat Intelligence for McAfee. "Cybercriminals are doing their homework, and are aware of what's popular, and what's insecure. They are attacking mobile devices and social networking sites, so education about user activity online, as well as incorporating the proper security technologies are of utmost importance."

McAfee makes some interesting points in the Q3 report.  Many of the things we love about the net, things like Twitter and URL shorteners, can also be used against us.  Twitter provides an endless stream of trending topics for them to pounce upon.  URL shorteners disguise where a link is sending would-be clickers.

SlingPlayer Mobile for iPad given a view walkthrough, still not available for download [Video]

Section: Video, Portable Video, Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Web, Online Music/Video

We mentioned that Sling was getting closer to releasing an iPad specific version of the SlingPlayer Mobile app, but sadly we have no idea when it will actually be release. That said, the folks over at Sling have released a nice 4 minute and 39 second video walkthrough showing us what we are missing. Bottom line, it is nothing that we were not expecting, but at the same time it is nice to see the current level of progress. Basically, for those feeling the overwhelming desire to sling television and dvr content to their iPad—the wait should not be that much longer. In other words, this may be a good time to set your $30 purchase price to the side.

One positive side effect of The Beatles coming to iTunes

Section: Apple, Audio, Web

One positive side effect of The Beatles coming to iTunes The big announcement from Apple turned out to not be all that exciting, The Beatles are now available in iTunes. After all, most Beatles fans likely have all the tracks already. That said, there was the Box Set being offering in iTunes, which is priced at $149. Personally, the box set is great and it was one that I purchased last year when it was released on CD. And yes, those CD’s were later ripped and added into my iTunes collection. Needless to say, the positive side of the Beatles coming to iTunes - those box sets are now less expensive than they had been just a day earlier. At present Amazon is offering the Box Set collection in Stereo and Mono and each are priced at $129.99. So buy the box set from Amazon and save about $20.

Google announces Android Market Developer Console planned maintenance outage

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

Google has recently sent out some notifications alerting users that the Android Market Developer Console will be going down for a short time on November 18th for what they are describing as a maintenance time. Of course, the conspiracy is that they are going to bring it back with some new features. Not being developers here we can hope for changes that affect the Market in a positive way, but either way, if you are an Android developer be prepared to not have access to the developer console from 10AM to 4PM PST on November 18th. And for those who are wondering, this should not affect end users and the ability to access the Android Market during that time.

Hello,

We’re writing to inform you about a planned service outage impacting Android Market that requires your attention.

We plan to perform maintenance on the Android Market Developer Console on Thursday 18 November 2010 from 10AM to 4PM Pacific Standard Time. During this time, there will be view-only access to the Developer Console at http://market.android.com/publish. You will be able to view your list of applications and error reports; however, you will not be able to upload new apps or make updates to existing apps. The publish status of your applications and use of the Android Market app on phones should not be impacted.

Thanks, and we appreciate your patience while we work to improve Android Market.

Regards,
The Android Market Team

Palm's CEO Jon Rubinstein; "We've got some great stuff coming"

Section: Business News, Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

I have never made any excuses for my love of Palm and given that I will not start with this post. In short, Jon Rubinstein, the CEO of Palm spoke recently at the Web 2.0 Summit in San Francisco and had all kinds of hopeful things to say about Palm and webOS and what was coming. Basically he made some nice promises such as;

“We’ve got some great stuff coming,” Rubinstein said. “If you are a webOS aficionado out there, be patient. The pool of webOS devices is going to grow very dramatically over the next 12 to 18 months.”

And that Palm was “ahead of everyone at the time,” when speaking about the June 2009 launch of the Pre. Personally, even as a Palm fan I am not sure I can agree with that one. Still, with other statements such as this I remain hopeful.

"Some smartphones, a great tablet coming. I think we have several products that will be hits when they come out….Everyone forgets, we just closed this acquisition in July….This time next year, you'll see us in a very different position."

Of course, this could be nothing more than a CEO thinking highly of their company. That said, I am looking forward to seeing what comes from Palm and hope that they will unveil something during CES in January.

BlackBerry PlayBook versus iPad

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers

Despite my utter hatred of all things Apple, I did my darnedest to watch this comparison with objective eyes. The result? I covet the day devices like the BlackBerry Playbook open doors for other manufacturers that will cut into Apple’s stronghold on the tablet market. And to think that you get all of this for under $500.

By the looks of it, the PlayBook is ready to oust its competition by boasting superior browser speeds, rich flash content and pixel perfect rendering. That’s all good and well, but what about the bucketlist of features the iPad has mastered? Time to play the devil’s advocate…

What did they leave out of this comparison? What is the story on the app market selection? How will the PlayBook compare when it comes to zooming, battery life and other basic features that make web browsing a breeze? I think it would be wise to stay skeptical on this one for now, but let us embrace some change within the ever-so-lonely tablet market.  Besides, who in their right mind would deem flash as an old web standard?

Do you think it will be the next big thing to grab a chunk of the tablet market? Should Steve be worried? Let us know what you think of the PlayBook in the comments section.

Let the flaming begin…
