Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile I looks like we can now settle that next week’s Samsung Android event will be the announcement of the Samsung Continuum. Today, before the phone was announced by either company, Verizon quietly put the phone up on a website advertising holiday gift ideas. The Samsung Continuum is listed only as “Coming Soon” on the Verizon page, listed right next to the Galaxy Tab that’s listed in the same way. From the shot we know the Continuum is a Galaxy S phone, which to to be expected, and it will feature V-Cast video. The biggest draw of the phone, the small, secondary screen below the main screen is highlighted as a place for notifications no matter what’s going on in the top screen. There’s no talk of specs of anything about the phone aside from the looks and the name. You can sign up for more information from Verizon should you want to keep up on the Continuum. Or, if this is the phone that’s to be released at the Samsung event on November 8, you can expect our coverage of the event, which should include at least a brief hands-on with the Continuum. It is also known that the Palm Pre 2, packing webOS 2.0, would launch in an unlocked GSM version, hopefully to allure possible webOS developers. With that in mind, it is unknown whether the device available for pre-order on the eighth is the Verizon Wireless CDMA model or the unlocked GSM model. With Verizon’s impending Holiday assault, I’m sure the device up for pre-order will be the CDMA Palm Pre 2. Sure, many site are now offering HTML5 options, but not all of them are. In just two days you’ll be able to play those Flash videos on you iPhone or iPad with the Skyfire Browser. Skyfire has been out on Android for quite some time now, but it’s now finally found it’s way to the iOS App Store. Skyfire lets users play Flash videos by converting them into HTML5, which can easily play on iOS. So now you can watch The Colbert Report of The Daily Show on your iOS device without having to buy the episodes from iTunes, all you have to do is use Skyfire to stream them. While Flash to HTML5 video conversion is one of the biggest feature of Skyfire 2.0 for iOS, there are a few more features. the browser will search web sites for keywords that appear often, allowing you to find out more about them easily by searching for those terms for you. There’s also the Facebook Quickview option, which brings you to the mobile Facebook site without leaving the page you’re already on, so you can see what your friends are doing without having to open a separate app. It’s odd to think that just a few months ago even the thought of Skyfire on the app store would seem absurd. But, it’s great that the option is now here. It won’t help with sites that are entirely Flash-based, but it will help with those that provide video only in Flash, which is something. Netflix members in both the U.S. and Canada also now have the ability to instantly watch TV shows and movies on their Windows Phone 7 handsets. If yes, well it looks like your number is getting smaller as tablet PCs, particularly the iPad continues to gather interests and popularity. According to research firm Changewave which conducted a consumer survey, the percentage of those who plan to buy netbooks have shown a significant decrease as compared to the same period in 2009. Changewave asked around 3,108 consumers in October on their planned buying trends for PCs, netbooks and tablets, which of course include the iPad. Results of the survey shows that only 10% of those who plan to buy a notebook in the next 90 days are keen on buying netbooks. The figure shows that only 14% of said group of consumers are planning to buy a netbook. This is a 10% decrease from last year. The debate continues over the impact Tablets are having on both the consumer PC market and Netbook demand. But what is particularly unclear is which companies are going to emerge as the biggest winners and losers? Interestingly, even those planned desktop purchase decrease to only 6% while those who plan to buy laptops still remain at 8% in unchanged. The report also found out that some respondents are somewhat likely or likely to purchase a tablet. Another interesting findings of the survey is the fact that 80% of the respondents are keen on buying the iPad. So, if you were one of the respondents, what would you have preferred to buy in the next 90 days? Tablet? Netbook? or iPad? In the past, the protection plans were transferable to a new person, however the ability to transfer from device to device was limited to the iPhone. Well, in a little bit of good news for those with AppleCare—that ability to transfer to a new device is now open for all new Apple products. The only catch is that the new product must have been purchased within the past 30 days and that it “must be of the kind that can be covered by the agreement.” In other words, nothing overly surprising in that respect. Bottom line, if you are getting a new Apple product you can now rest assured in that your previous coverage can transfer over which really means one less thing to shell out money for. The new Transcend Googles ($399-$499), feature a variety of functions viewable on a virtual sign that appears to be 6 feet away. The goggles are the result of collaboration between Zeal and Recon Instruments. The Transcend Goggles feature the ability to report speed, distance, hangtime, location, temp, and vertical distance. The data can be cycled through via glove-friendly buttons on the side of the goggle. The goggles have a USB port that allows downloading the data to users computers and mapping the data via a Google Maps overlay. The goggles are available in two varieties: -SPPX Polarized and photocromic (transitioning) lens for $499 -SPX Polarized for $399 Both options feature a 7 hour battery life, which seems short to me for a full day of shredding, but then after 7 hours, my legs are done - so remembering that last run might not be such a good idea anyhow. Global tablet sales climbed to 4.4 million units while Apple’s share increased to 4.19. Tablets running Android shrunk to just 2.3% (from 2.9% the previous quarter). But isn’t this all bogus? Yes. A real Android challenger, the Samsung Tab is just reaching retail locations now and should be a contender for America’s Next Top Tablet. Pricing for the TAB isn’t as low as some would hope but the unit at the very least, has a shot and should be everywhere. Apple has seen what being everywhere, ala Android phones, can do and made changes quickly with how they distribute the iPad to compete. Our prediction is Apple won’t own 95% of the market in Q4. There’s curiosity, a healthy column of Android users thanks to “Droid!”. Will Android pull even? Not this year and probably not next. Apple’s good a good head start and currently hold the envious, “how does it compare to the iPad” spot. That will keep them the market leader for the foreseeable future. Proclaimed to be non-biased the website aims to match your answers to some basic campaign questions with those of the candidates, localized to your area. After your answers are complete, the site matches you to the candidates and tells you who is best aligned with your views. It’s rather interesting. If only the candidates would sit still long enough to answer these questions. Some did, some didn’t and for some, answers were inferred from other things the candidates have said. It seems the less candidates reveal about themselves the less ammo their opponents have to fling. Answering the questions are rather tough. They are making me rethink the whole, “I am going to run for president someday” thing. They range from hot-button questions such as the war in Afghanistan to abortion and gay marriage to taxes. Being pinned down isn’t a lot of fun, perhaps it’s a good taste of what the candidates have to go through. After answering the questions, the site displays the percentages on how closely (or not) they scored to your choices. The site shows who is the best match for your answers for both the House and Senate (if applicable). The site also shows how many answers are taken directly from the candidates; in my elections the better I know the name, the fewer answers they seem to have provided. The site hopes they can be one tool in helping you decide who to vote for today. It’s easy, fast and might even make you think. VoteEasy is an offshoot from VoteSmart. Back then it was said that those notebooks are to be released end of this year depending on how fast Google will be able to finish the Google Chrome OS. Well, it’s now November and Digitimes is breaking the silence into this issue by reporting that global vendors are now preparing to launch their smartbooks running Google Chrome OS. In fact, it could be as early as end of this month. The report also mentioned that Google is releasing its own-brand Chrome notebook. According to the report, said Google Chrome notebook will be manufactured by Inventec and initial shipments are projected to be somewhere from 60,000 to 70,000 units. Said Google notebook will be loaded with an ARM-based platform. Google is also going similar route it took when the Google Nexus One was released, that is available only via Google online distribution channels and not from retailers. Sounds like a bad idea? Well as a consolation, the report also said that right after Google released its own Chrome notebook, Acer and HP will follow suit and announced their own Chrome OS-powered devices as well. This is slated for December. Acer and HP’s notebooks will be produced by Quanta Computer. What is not clear though is whether Google is planning to release a regular notebook or a more portable one in the likes of the iPad, netbooks or even the newly released MacBook Air. Your guesses?
