Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Web Browsers Opera, the often forgotten web browser is just about ready to launch the next version of it’s Opera Mobile for Android. The next version for Android will bring the browser up to the same version-number as the desktop Opera, and adds a few much-needed improvements. Opera isn’t saying much about the next version, Opera Mobile 10.1 beta, but there are a couple of videos that show off what features we can expect. The first video shows off the newly-added pinch-to-zoom, which would seem strange to not include now that Android can support that sort of gesture. The video shows the trademark quick loading times for the browser, as well as smooth zooming and scrolling about pages. The pages do take a few moments to render the zoomed-in content due to the compression of Opera’s software, but it seems to not take too long. The second feature shows off the geolocation function of the browser. When you get to a page that wants to use your location, Opera pops up a menu asking you approve it, then accesses the phone’s GPS to find your location, which seems pretty standard. We can also presume that like it’s bigger brother, Opera Mobile 10.1 beta will support HTML 5. The page announcing the browser as well as the videos are coded in HTML 5, so it would only seem like a natural assumption. We’ll probably have to wait until November 9 to see more, and to determine if Opera Mobile 10.1 beta will be able to replace the standard Android browser. And for those not familiar with the ZTE Peel, it is a case for the iPod touch that has a built-in 3G modem. In short, it will turn your iPod touch into a 3G capable device which connects to the iPod using a Wi-Fi connection. The one downfall with a device such as the ZTE Peel, this just means another battery to keep charged. That said, there is a bit of a silver lining. Well, there is assuming this rumor is true. According to the details, Sprint will be offering the ZTE Peel contract free and for $30 per month. As for what your $30 will give you—1GB of data per month. Sounds nice for those looking to be able to stay connected with an iPod touch by way of email and/or messaging, though we would caution against using anything in terms of streaming such as Slacker or Pandora. The announcement comes just a few days before Windows Phone 7 launches on AT&T. In the coming weeks, all 25,000 Dell employees will be handed Dell Venue Pros to use for work and (presumably) personal use. The move will replace Dell’s BlackBerry smartphones and servers with the Windows Phone 7 devices and servers set up to communicate with WP7 and Android smartphones. In the future, Dell employees will be given the option to use either mobile OS. Even those employees that don’t already have voice and data plans from Dell will be given the phones, but with T-Mobile’s voice plans, only. The can still use WiFi for web, apps and email, but will be out of luck without it. The switch comes at no real surprise, Dell is finally getting serious about smartphones, and the Venue Pro looks to be a great device. Dell of course is hoping to convince it’s business customers and partners to make the switch as well, which could prove to be trouble for RIM. It’s not secret that many people now want to use their smartphones for business and personal use, which is a sore spot for BlackBerrys. Given the choice between a BlackBerry Torch and a Venue Pro (or an Android equivalent), chances are the Torch will be left out in the cold. The latest version is 3.0.271 and it is available by way of the BlackBerry App World. More important though is the change, the app now offers support for more version of the BlackBerry operating system, including the latest. Evernote for BlackBerry is now compatible with devices running 4.5, 4.6, 4.7, 5.0 and 6.0. In other words, if you are using a recently upgraded BlackBerry or one of the newer devices such as the Torch that shipped with BlackBerry 6 then now is a good time to visit the App World. Today Mozilla released the second beta for Firefox 4 for Mobile, with a few noticeable improvements over the first one. The biggest improvement to Beta 2 is the much smaller size. Mozilla was able to cut the size down by 60%, from 43MB to 17MB, which is a huge difference in smartphone apps. To see that size in Android, however, you have to uninstall beta 1, which you’ll probably have to do a few more times if you keep up with the betas, as Firefox 4 for Mobile could end up even smaller. Maemo users presumably don’t need to uninstall the previous version to see the size decrease. That leaner size also brings along some speed improvements. Panning and zooming are faster and smoother. The beta already surpasses the stock browser in the SunSpider Javascript benchmark, coming through with 25% faster speeds. More noticeable improvements for most users lie in the interface. The browser has a new theme to set it apart from the previous beta. The new theme brings with it the ability to reopen closed tabs, which is nice, but probably doesn’t happen as often on smartphones. There’s also a new, easy way to share links with friends from the Site Menu, which we’ve seen in other mobile browsers. Mozilla also notes that there are a few features that are yet to be implemented. Those include HTML5 video as well as hardware acceleration for zooming and panning. The company is continually working on the overall experience for Firefox 4 Beta for Mobile. If the desktop version is any indication, there’s still a bunch of new features to come in future betas, which is an exciting though. We are one step closer to being able to do that as an internal screenshot from Verizon’s system seems to pin the launch date of the Motorola Droid 2 Global on November 11. If you take a look at the image above, it shows the two model numbers for the two variants of the Droid 2 Global (blue and white) as coming soon. Unfortunately, pricing still remains a mystery but chances are it will launch for $199 on a two year contract. In addition, if you take a look at the image below, you will notice the text saying it will launch November 11. This is definitely one of Verizon Wireless’ worst kept secrets, but I’m not complaining. Of course, that was a rumored date coming from a product listing with The Source. And given that was not anything from the carrier (leaked or official) it was always subject to change. Well flash forward till the present and we are seeing a leaked document which has come from Bell. As for the date—November 12th. Bottom line here, if you are in Canada and planning to pick up a Galaxy Tab with Bell, it should be safe to go ahead and mark your calendar for a release on the 12th. Well, the release date has not yet been narrowed down, however it is expected to arrive sometime in November. And just as a compare, Rogers and Bell are expected to release the Bold 9780 on November 9th so we can expect a similar timeframe. However, it looks like AT&T will not be allowing its customers to pre-order any of the WP7 devices launching. In fact, the Samsung Focus and the HTC Surround are launching on November 8 and customers will have to go to AT&T retail stores that day to pick up a hot new WP7 phone. It is weird how we are finding out only now that pre-orders are not being allowed by AT&T, but perhaps no one cared enough to raise the question before. No one knew for sure exactly why T-Mobile was doing this, but there were two possible reasons. One, probably the most preferred theory, T-Mobile was getting ready to launch the iPhone and started preemptively stocking accessories. The second theory, the most logical and reasonable one, T-Mobile was simply trying to help their customers who use an unlocked iPhone on their network. Only hours ago, T-Mobile released a statement to BGR confirming that select T-Mobile retail locations are stocking the iPhone charger out of convenience to Europeans who use the iPhone in American on T-Mobile’s network (since T-Mobile in Europe sells the iPhone) and for owners of an unlocked iPhone. Below is the statement in its entirety: Select T-Mobile stores will soon begin carrying iPod/iPhone charge and Sync cables to support customers who may be using an unlocked iPhone or are traveling from outside the United States and using an iPhone while roaming on our network. T-Mobile carries the iPhone in Europe, so many people traveling to the U.S. roam on our network with their iPhones. The iPod/iPhone cable also makes a great companion product for our line of MicroUSB charging solutions. The cable can be plugged into the USB port of the universal MicroUSB car, wall or two-in-one chargers to provide customers with a charging solution for their iPod when they are on the go. This probably comes as a dismay for T-Mobile customers, hoping for the offchance T-Mobile would land the coveted iPhone.
