iPod Nano Proves Watches Are Not Out Of Style Posted: 22 Nov 2010 04:24 AM PST People have been remarking on how "watches are dying." Referring to the fact that some people are choosing their mobile phones over watches. I say that these people probably didn't have very nice watches to begin with, but that is beside the point. The point is why is it that the iPod Nano comes out, has a time function that displays an analog clock, and the geek world that is so convinced they no longer need watches, clamor to get the thing on their wrist? Isn't that just a bit ironic? |
ChromaLED 3D6: Japanese Company Shows 280-Inch 3D LED Display System Posted: 22 Nov 2010 04:23 AM PST Another day, another 3D-related news item. I guess you never heard about Hibino, but the Tokyo-based electronics company has shown two interesting new products [JP, PDF] today. First, there’s the ChromaLED 3D6, a LED-based display system that’s sized at a whopping 280 inches (pictured above) and that can produce 3D images. The ChromaLED 3D6 that Hibino showed today during a press conference in Tokyo is made of multiple LED 3D units which ares sized at 38 inches each and feature 730cd/m2 brightness. The 280-inch system has 1,024×576 resolution, with Hibino saying they can produce systems double the size, too, if there’s demand. The company also showcased another model, the ChromaLED 3D4 (pictured below). While the 3D6 comes with 6mm pitch LED screens, the 74-inch 3D4 pitch even stands at just 4mm – a world’s first, according to Hibino. The screens the system is composed of are a little weaker though (for example, they just feature 510cd/m2 brightness). Viewers can switch between 2D and 3D with the push of a a button, with both systems requiring glasses to view images in 3D. They can be ordered from Hibino starting today (no word on pricing other than that the systems will be marketed with an “open price model”). Via AV Watch [JP] |
Panasonic’s EVOLTA Mini Robot Finishes 500KM Journey From Tokyo To Kyoto Posted: 22 Nov 2010 03:20 AM PST Back in September, Panasonic announced an unusual publicity stunt: let a cute mini robot walk from Tokyo to Kyoto – powered solely by the company’s rechargeable EVOLTA batteries. The 1kg robot started the journey on September 23 in Tokyo, and today, Panasonic proudly announced the robot has arrived safely in Kyoto. In other words, it took the the little guy about 2 months to travel 310 miles. To cover the trek, Panasonic set up a dedicated Ustream channel, a YouTube channel, an official website, and a blog (all in Japanese only). The robot was powered by a total of twelve EVOLTA batteries, which were charged daily. Panasonic says that it moved at 2 to 3km/h and arrived in Kyoto way ahead of schedule (December 10). It wasn’t the first time big P used the robot for a publicity stunt. In 2008, we blogged an EVOLTA-powered mini robot that climbed up a 500 meter high cliff at Grand Canyon. One year later, we've shown you how such a robot ran 24km on the famous Le Mans 24 Hours circuit in France (on 2 AA batteries). Via Jiji [JP] |
Become The Star Wars Kid With Your Hacked Kinect Posted: 21 Nov 2010 04:42 PM PST Using all of the homebrew tools at his disposal, Yankeyan created this Kinect trick that adds a light saber to your flailing, uncoordinated image on the screen. What did Arthur C. Clarke say about magic? |
