Section: Communications, Mobile, Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking Image courtesy: TechCrunch Facebook today held a special event to talk about it’s mobile offerings. One of the biggest announcements promises to bring along a much simpler sign-in procedure for mobile users. Those who use Facebook Connect on anything mobile know how annoying it can be to retype your email and password every time you want to log into Facebook to interact with the app. Now, it would seem that Facebook is offering a much simpler method. Using new APIs developers will be able to include a simple Facebook login button rather than requiring users to sign-ing with their username and password every time. Seems like it could be a much easier way to interact with mobile apps, just log-in to Facebook once, and you’re done. The update comes alongside a number of new Places APIs, and updated apps for Android and iPhone. The Android app now includes Places and Groups integration. The iPhone app will now feature the ability to add photos to Places, and improved tagging. Earlier today we told you about the comparison chart and now is time for the “Top Things To Know” infographic from Verizon. Of course, some of this is a rehash of the comparison chart, however it does go into a little more detail in regards to the ticker display. And just in case you have not already guessed, it looks like the big selling point is going to be the 1.8 inch ticker display which is described as being a “customizable screen at the bottom of the phone” that “displays content without the need to unlock the phone.” Otherwise, you will activate the ticker display by gripping the phone on the bottom left and right and it will display everything from social network updates, to incoming calls, to music that you are playing and even directions. Sadly though, it looks like the directions are only going to work if you are using VZ Navigator. Angry Birds for the App Store for iOS devices like the iPhone, iPad and iPods, has passed through 10 million paid downloads. The unbelievably addicting game launched in 2009 and continues to spawn success. The Halloween version recently topped 1 million paid downloads. Adding in unpaid versions and other platforms, the installed base tops 30 million. That’s a lot of birds to be throwing around. Think of the cute little pigs that get destroyed second to second. This first is featuring the Droid 2 and the Droid X along side a fairly cool looking robotic droid snowman. The commercial is short and to the point coming in at 32 seconds and somehow feels fast. I am not sure how to further describe that feeling, but watch for yourself and see what I mean. Either way, the commercial touts the features of the Droid X and the Droid 2 and concludes with letting us know that the Droid 2 is now $149.99. We’ve got this slide, above, and a comment from an unnamed senior official commenting the Optimus will run Honeycomb (expected to be Android 3.0). Why is LG waiting? The answer appears to be that the company doesn’t believe a tablet experience on Froyo will be good enough to gain traction. Instead, LG seems to believe Honeycomb will be the beginning of when Android tablets mature. The senior official said the tablet would see the light of day in Q1 of 2011And LG will be there, teasing many firsts. Here are some of the firsts that might be available by the time Optimus rolls out: (see what I did there, Optimus plus “rolls out” =Tranformer shout out, sweet). - a dual-core Tegra 2 chip inside -the first 8.9” tablet (those two reportedly came from the senior official) -AMOLED screen or super AMOLED -solar powered -4G Any other guesses at what LG would see as firsts? You know, Sprint has the big 4G “First” campaign where they beat the word into oblivion to the point where you stop listening to any of their “firsts.” Could this be headed there? Many of the cheap Android tablets, like ones you see advertised on this site occasionally, are built with Android but don’t allow upgrades. A non-upgradeable OS could cast a dark shadow on the Tab, as none of us like to be left behind. Well good news, it seems a Samsung official in India has confirmed the Tab will be able to upgrade to Gingerbread and to Honeycomb (Android’s next versions 2.3 and 3.0 supposedly). While timing on these updates has not been confirmed, the fact that it will come is good news. If Samsung manages to sell these Tabs well, the more the impetus will be to get the updates pushed out quickly. It’s just that simple. Well, that may have been true, or at least true in part. According to a recent article over on PC Mag, the version of Skype that will be available for the Galaxy Tab will be limited to Wi-Fi only with Verizon Wireless. That said, some others including Qik, Nimbuzz and Fring are expected to work on both Wi-Fi and 3G. Bottom line, it looks like Verizon users will not be making any 3G Skype calls, that is, until the Android community decides to release a version that can, similar to what they did with the other version of Skype. So AT&T in partnership with Samsung Mobile are taking yet another effort to infuse some environmental awareness on the upcoming release of the new environment-friendly smartphone aptly branded - Samsung Evergreen. This phone is said to have been built with 70% recycled post-consumer plastics and packaged using 80% recycled post-consumer paper. But that’s just one part of the deal. The other part has something to do with Samsung’s pledge to donate 1$ for every Samsung Evergreen sold, hoping to give as much as $100,000 to the non-profit group, Cell Phones for Soldiers. Available on November 7, the Samsung Evergreen wil be sold for $29.99 after mail-in rebate plus a two-year contract. You also would have to pay $20 per month messaging or data fee. If you’re really conscious about the environment and you want to help in as little way as you can, such as purchasing this phone, at least you should know what its features are. The Samsung Evergree has a 2.4-inch display, full slide-out QWERTY keyboard, a 2MP camera and video camcorder, Bluetooth, and 3G connectivity.
