Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Trade Shows, CTIA As predicted, during Verizon’s keynote at CTIA, CEO Lowell McAdam announced plans for the upcoming LTE rollout. While it was previously announced that the company would be rolling the service out to 30 NFL cities, McAdam announced that 4G would in fact be launching in 38 cities, including New York City, Houston, Dallas, the San Francisco Bay Area and unnamed cities that lack NFL teams. With this rollout, Verizon LTE will cover about 110 million people, or about a third of the US population. The rest of Verizon’s coverage map will see LTE by the end of 2013. 200 million of those people should get the coverage in about 1.5 years, which isn’t bad at all. All that coverage is great, but useless at the moment without devices to take advantage of it. McAdam dropped a few hints that we should see Verizon LTE phones debuting at CES. Unsurprisingly, we should expect a few of those phones to be Android, with “some products” set to be unveiled with Google CEO Eric Schmidt there as well. Those phones should be out in the first half of 2011, with other devices including modems and tablets to come as well. Perhaps this could be the fabled Verizon iPad, or just more Android tablets. Either way, Verizon LTE is coming, and it should be exciting. And interestingly enough, the Transform appears to be running stock Android. In other words, no overly skinned look. That aside, other features of the Transform include a horizontal slider design with hardware QWERTY keyboard, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, microSD card slot, 3 megapixel camera and Android 2.2. Otherwise, not much else to mention. At this point we have nothing in terms of a release date or pricing. And in fact, the user guide has since been pulled from the Sprint website. But with that, assuming the Samsung Transform launches as expected (with stock Android) this could make for a nice new handset for the geekier among us. Of course, we have already mentioned the Flipout, Flipside and Bravo heading to AT&T. And the Droid Pro and Citrus which are heading to Verizon Wireless. That leaves the Spice. And for those in the US wondering which carrier is going to be picking this one up—no word yet. Instead the Motorola Spice looks to be heading to Brazil, and at least for now, only Brazil. That aside though, the Spice is a nice looking handset. For starters it is a vertical slider, think Palm Pre in terms of design. The Spice is sporting Android 2.1 along with a 3 megapixel camera, 256MB RAM, 512MB ROM, microSD card slot, 3.5mm headphone jack, Bluetooth 2.0+EDR, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, GPS and an 1170 mAh battery. In terms of that display, that is 3.0 inches with a 240 x 320 pixel resolution. All said and done, the Spice is not the most powerful Android phone to hit the market, but I must say that I like the vertical slider design and hope to see this (or something similar) come available here in the US market. The news is not really all that surprising, but the long and short is that FLO TV sales have been immediately stopped and the programming will run through the Spring of 2011. And with that, those affected will receive what was described as being “appropriate refunds” though the details of the refunds were not given out, instead left as how they would be “communicated prior to discontinuation.” Keep reading to check out the full press release… Read [PR Newswire] Statement From Qualcomm Regarding FLO TV SAN DIEGO, Oct. 5 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/—As we previously indicated in our July 2010 earnings call, we have been examining strategic opportunities for FLO TV. We have been engaging in conversations with a wide range of partners for both the network and the spectrum. We are seeing strong interest in using the FLO TV network or spectrum to capitalize on the growing imbalance between mobile data supply and demand, the growth of tablets, and consumer demand for high quality video and print content, and a richer user experience. While this process continues, we are suspending our direct to consumer sales of new devices. We anticipate we will maintain the network so that current direct to consumer subscribers will continue to receive FLO programming into Spring 2011. Service provided to handsets purchased through wireless operators is unaffected at this time. In the event of a discontinuance of service, FLO TV will make appropriate refunds, the details of which will be communicated prior to discontinuation. While we are working to redeploy impacted employees, we anticipate that there will be some layoffs. “Except for the historical information contained herein, this release contains forward-looking statements that are subject to risks and uncertainties, including the Company’s ability to successfully pursue, enter into and consummate strategic opportunities, on satisfactory terms, relating to the FLO TV network and the associated spectrum, the duration that the FLO TV network will be maintained for current direct to consumer subscribers, the duration for which FLO TV service will be maintained for handsets purchased through wireless operators, the nature of and the terms and conditions associated with any refund policy to affected consumers, the nature and extent of any layoffs, as well as the other risks detailed from time to time in the Company’s SEC reports, including the report on Form 10-K for the year ended September 27, 2009, and most recent Form 10-Q.
