FLIPOUT from Motorola on AT&T drops price to free with WireFly

Wow, that was quick.  Forget $349 (MSRP), forget the $79 AT&T wants you to pay.  The Motorola FLIPOUTt is being offered at WireFly for free.  Like AT&T’s deal the phone is sold at this price only with a new two-year contract.

We literally just brought you the news about AT&T finally offering this phone after fits and starts.  The day it gets to consumers hands we find it’s price drops to zero like a lead balloon.  What gives?

Motorola has been selling this phone in Europe and Latin America.  The squarish phone runs Android and has a unique twist apart design that reveals a QWERTY keyboard allowing users to bang out texts and emails.  The FLIPOUT runs the latest version (read: less intrusive) of MOTOBLUR which is said to be far superior to the original.

The FLIPOUT is a unique phone that targets younger users.  We’re unconvinced that the FLIPOUT wounldn’t do better as a quick messaging phone, rather than a smartphone.  What is your take?

Gadgetell hands on: disc-less Netflix on Wii

Section: Video, Content, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray, HDTV

Gadgetell hands on Netflix streaming to wii with no disc

Even easier.  That’s how I describe today’s release of the Netflix channel, available on the Wii.  Previously, Wii users had to insert the special Netflix disc to be able to access Netflix content.  The result?  Awesome.

The controls on the Wii make for a much better experience than say on my TiVo.  The channel works much like the Netflix mobile app: recommendations adorn the home page based on movies you’ve seen recently, genres you seem to like and new releases.  The channel makes use of all the buttons on the Wii remote.

Users will need to go to the Wii Store to download the channel.  From there, a Netflix identifying code is given that must be entered on the Netflix website.  Then the Wii does some thinking and you’re connected.  It’s a pretty smooth process.

I find the fast forwarding of programs/movies to be much better on the Wii.  Scenes can be breezed through quickly, then hitting play - it takes just a few seconds for the streaming to start again.

Overall, I found it to work easy, be very intuitive and best of all - it’s free to Netflix and Wii owners…

Verizon Wireless Q4 Global smartphone releases include HTC Merge, Droid 2 & more

It looks like Verizon has a few global edition smartphones still left to release this year. Of course, some of these come more as further confirmation than surprise, but nonetheless, it is still nice to see further evidence. So without further adieu, the Q4 2010 3G global smartphones from Verizon includes the HTC Merge, Droid 2 Global, Motorola Droid Pro and the LG enV Pro. With that, we are still unsure just when this will come available but with 2010 ending in less than three months it is safe to say they will be available sooner rather than later.

Is this the Motorola Droid Special Edition?

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Is this the Motorola Droid Special Edition

An image of a Motorola Droid X hit the web over the weekend, and as you can likely see, this one looks a little different as compared to the current Droid X found with Verizon. At first glance, it is the silver bezel. But at the same time we have not seen any images of the back of this phone, which means we are unsure if this is a silver phone Droid X or just a Droid X with a silver bezel. Either way, it has been dubbed the Droid X SE (Special Edition) and at this time we have nothing solid in terms of when it will be available. Otherwise, the other noticeable difference is small and comes in with the placement of the Verizon logo. If you remember back it was centered on the bottom of the display (just above the four buttons) and here it is sitting down on the bottom (toward the right).

New Android: HTC Gratia

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

HTC has announced the Gratia in Europe in Q1 of 2011.  Known as the Aria in the US, the Gratia features HTC’s TouchSense, a 5 megapixel camera, and is powered by Qualcomm’s 600 MHz processor.  Unlike the US version, the Gratia will ship with Android 2.2 (the Aria ships with 2.1).

In the US, the Aria has already slipped to being offered for free.  The Gratia, which shares the hardware from the Aria will be one of the thinnest Android phones going.  The addition of Froyo (2.2) is icing on the cake.

The phone will feature HSPA/WCDMA 900/2100 support along with its quadband GSM/EDGE.  Pricing has not been released.

Wondering why your Peek stopped working over the weekend?

Section: Communications, Email / IM, Mobile, Gadgets / Other

If you had a Peek, other than the Peek 9 you lost your service over the weekend. Kind of a bummer, though the news of the permanent outage does arrive with a silver lining. Bottom line here, Peek switched providers and at the same time seems to have killed off all older devices. The good news here is that Peek is going to stand up and make sure those customers are taken care of by sending them out a new Peek 9. According to the details coming from the Peek blog;

“To get this offer from us – just check your email – you should have received about ten emails regarding it. Or email into care@getpeek.com for the details.”

And while it is never nice to see a device go down for the count, it is more than refreshing to see a company take charge with a nice offer so quickly.

On fire: Walmart Polaroid LCD TV; sports fake UL cert

Section: Video, HDTV

Walmart polaroid has falsified UL listing

Underwriter Laboratories (UL) has issued a warning that some LCD TVs have entered the US market falsely bearing the UL logo.  The UL is an independent product safety certification organization responsible for testing products and writing Standards for Safety for over 100 years.  The UL warns there could be safety concerns with the falsely marked TVs; one has already caught fire.

The UL identified the Polaroid Model TDA-03211C as the culprit.  You can find this LCD TV over at Walmart and look - yay- it’s in stock.  For just $618 you can get this “hot” little unit!  And

.

UPDATE: the unit just went out of stock as this post was being updated.  Walmart showed 160 reviews of the TV that was manufactured from 2007-2009, so the number of these out there could be quite large.

It’s actually no laughing matter.  UL is suggesting users contact the manufacturer:

Proview Electronics Co Ltd

1 PAU SHENG ROAD

6TH FLOOR

Yung-Ho, Taipei Taiwan

We’ve reached out to Walmart to (a) alert them and (b) see how they will help those who’ve purchased…we’ll update with a response.

Samsung Unveils the SMT-i9100 Android Tablet in Japan, Not the Galaxy Tab

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Gadgets / Other

Samsung SMT-i9100 Android Tablet

So what do we have here? It looks like Samsung has a special Android tablet, the Samsung SMT-i9100 which is possibly exclusive for the Japanese market only. Specifically, the said Samsung Android tablet will be released through Japanese operator, KDDI. And while it will also run Android 2.2 OS and sports a 7-inch WSVGA screen and a 512MB RAM like the Samsung Galaxy Tab, the SMT-i900 is different in several aspects.

The Samsung SMT-i9100 doesn’t look anything like the Samsung Galaxy Tab. Also, instead of using the TouchWiz, the Android tablet will be running the Ocean Observation UI. Another difference between the Galaxy Tab and the SMT-i9100 is the absence of the front-facing camera as well as a lower-spec’d 2MP camera.

Other features of the Samsung SMT-i9100 include Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi 802.1 b/g/n, 4GB flash storage and microSD card. Now, here’s something that our Japanese friends won’t probably like about the Samsung SMT-i9100 Android tablet - it’s battery life. It could only last up to 2 hours of continued usage, and 12 hours on standby mode. 2 hours of battery life Samsung? What gives?

In case you didn’t get turned-off by its battery life and you’re still interested with the Samsung SMT-i9100, it will be released early next year. However, you might also want to check out the Samsung Galaxy Tab which NTT DoCoMo is releasing in Japan as well.

Rumor: Android 4.0 to arrive as Ice Cream

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google

As far as Android goes, it has almost always taken on the codename of a desert. Android 1.5 began the process as Cupcake, Android 1.6 went on to become Donut, Android 2.0 was Eclair and most recently we have Android 2.2 Froyo. And if you have not figured out the pattern, in addition to being a dessert, they also run in alphabetical order. That means the next release, which is Android 3.0 will arrive with a G—Gingerbread and then Android 3.5 will follow as Honeycomb. And then while many are still waiting to see Android 2.2 and hoping they will eventually see Android 3.0 or 3.5 we have word of the codename for Android 4.0. That will arrive as Ice Cream. With that, it looks like the release of Ice Cream will be still be a little ways off as it is not expected to even be introduced until sometime in mid-2011. Any guesses for future versions, what about J, K and L.

Couldn't download Angry Birds on Friday? It was being downloaded by 1 million others [Popularity]

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Gaming, Mobile

If you were having trouble grabbing Angry Birds for Android the day it was released, that was because it was busy being downloaded by a million other people. Seriously.

“worked out great too (once servers recovered) 1M+ downloads first day”

That said, if for some reason you gave up the other day after getting frustrated, worry not because the game is now available (and able to be downloaded) by way of the official Android Market.
