Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google It looks like Google has released the latest breakdown in terms of market share of the various versions of Android. And coming as little surprise, Android 2.2 has been growing. The most recent numbers are showing Android 2.2 Froyo with a nice 33.4%. Of course, that is still under the current 40.4% for Android 2.1. And thankfully, the numbers that make up Android 1.6 and 1.5 are still declining. At present, 1.6 has 16.4% and 1.5 has 9.7%. Maybe we can see 1.6 finally drop down into the single digits by the next update. That said, before long we are going to see another version coming into the mix—Android 3.0. And no, sadly it is not the Android 2.1 update. But that aside, this update does include several fixes and improvements. Plus, this update has also added the Swype virtual keyboard. As of now the Android 2.1 update is expected to arrive sometime in “late Q3/early Q4” but in the meantime, I say take what you can get. As for this update, it will bring the software version up to 1.32.20. In terms of what to expect, according to the change log coming from Motorola; - Overall Phone Performance: Users will notice a significantly improved overall performance and responsiveness to input requests, including: opening applications, answering calls, opening the Happenings widget, and downloading attachments and pictures within email
- Additional Stability: Improved stability, resulting in fewer occurrences of unresponsiveness and/or programs quitting unexpectedly
- Bluetooth Performance: Improved performance and connectivity with other Bluetooth devices
- Messaging: Prevents erroneous notifications that a message has not been sent. Also resolves MMS sending / receiving functionality issues in certain scenarios
- Touchscreen: Improved touch screen sensitivity and touch response
- SWYPE Keyboard: Includes updates to the latest version of the SWYPE software, resulting in improved overall performance of the application
With that, getting the update is simple. Once you receive the notification to say it is available, simple click “Download” then “Install Now” and then after the install process has taken care of business you will need to perform a handset restart. But personal feelings aside, this (as you can likely guess) has come as a result of the competition. Nothing surprising there, after all, how many people would be willing to shell out another $250 bucks plus shell out another monthly subscription when other devices will do almost the same thing. Granted, other devices may have offered the same programming lineup, but close enough for most I would suspect. According to the details given, “the mobile TV service will shut down by the end of the year.” Furthermore, they are in talks with both Verizon and AT&T to see what can be done about the carrier options that had been available. I guess even that initial offer of a free 6 months of service with the purchase of a FLO TV was not enough to draw in the customers. According to details coming from PreCentral, Palm may be getting ready to release a device which is sporting the codename of “Mansion.” And unlike previous Palm devices, this one will not have a keyboard. Yup, a touchscreen only Palm device. But on the flipside, that display is said to be coming with a resolution of 800 x 480. Time will tell just how accurate this rumor actually is, but in the meantime, we will remain slightly skeptical. I’m sure Acer kept this sort of thinking in mind when they thought up and developed the new Acer C20 Pico Projector, a portable projector that is roughly the size of a smartphone. The C20, which comes in candy pink, metallic blue and silver models, hooks up via USB or HDMI and promises a WVGA resolution picture anywhere from 5 to 66-inches with a 2,000:1 contrast ratio. This little gem also comes equipped with an internal speaker and a bulb that can run through approximately 20,000 hours of use. In other words, you’ll be presenting those lovable PowerPoint slides hassle-free for years to come. Featuring ColorSafe II DLP color compensation technology, the Pico will not see the affects of color decay even after prolonged use. The C20 is currently only available in the U.K. for an MSRP of £279.99 (which is roughly $443). Coming soon, a fax machine that fits in your pocket. Yup, the iOS Netflix app has just been updated to version 1.1.1 and this new version brings a nice new feature for those sporting an iPhone or iPod touch—support for video out. According to the “what’s new” section in the App Store listing, there is now “support for video out on iPhone 4 and iPod 4th gen” as well as some bug fixes. Of course, in order to enjoy the video out you will need to get a proper cable. The new feature leverages SugarSync's flexible structure to enable users to work the way they always work, without extra steps. The new multi-user sync capability allows for folders shared among an assigned group to be immediately synced between all parties. As soon as shared files are updated by a user, each person will find the most up-to-date information on his/her computer.” This multi-user sync feature will be available for all current users and allow you easily share files and folders between users. The nice part here is that the files (or folders) will automatically sync between the users, which should ensure the everyone has the latest. As far as getting started, current users will simply need to click the “sync to computer” button. And for those of you who are worried about giving the full access to a folder, there is a read-only option available. Furthermore, just in case something does happen, SugarSync keeps the five previous versions of each file. Bottom line here, this is just another addition to what would be a long list of reasons to recommend SugarSync. Personally I have been a paid user for several years now and love the ease of use, though I do not often access the files that I sync from the web or even another computer, but instead for me it serves as a nice second location for important (and regularly used) files that I have on my computer. In short, if you have not already, head on over to the SugarSync website and give it a look. They even have a free account available for those looking to test things out. In terms of pricing, expect to pay $544.99, $673.49 or $774.98 for the 16GB, 32GB or 64GB iPad with Wi-Fi and $687.18, $819.97 or $922.75 for the 16GB, 32GB or 64GB iPad with Wi-Fi + 3G. And as you likely have noticed after looking at these prices, they are marked up as compared to what you will pay direct with Apple. It is also worth noting that (as of this posting) the iPad is being shipped by way of a variety of third party sellers. Bottom line, I really like Amazon and consider it a go to place for many products, but the iPad does not seem to fit that bill. Nicely, ALL prices will be displayed in your local currency, which means the next time you scan down the Market looking for something to purchase, you will easily and quickly be able to see how much the app will cost. And more important, you will be able to see that price without having to worry whether or not you did the conversion correct.
