Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile We had seen some of the specs for the Droid 2 Global edition get revealed by way of the Motorola website a short while back, and now it looks like we have a leak coming by way of Verizon. Though this latest comes in the form of a blurry image, but a blurry image showing that the Droid 2 Global edition has made an appearance in the Verizon employee training system. In other words, it looks like the Droid 2 Global edition has moved one step closer to an actual release. Unfortunately, we still have no clue as to when that release will actually happen. Though, truth be told I think the Times and the Post may not always be for the same audience. That said, this latest comes as the New York Post and it is available for the iPad. The significance here is that it has launched with in-app subscription options. The app itself is priced at $1.99 which includes the first 30 days. Afterward you can make an in-app purchase and subscribe for 11 months for $6.99 or 1 year for $74.99. “The New York Post iPad App provides a new way to experience The Post's award-winning coverage. In each day’s edition, you will find all the key sections of the newspaper - News, Page Six, Opinion, Pulse, Business and Sports. You'll also experience a bevy of special features such as the ability to make your own front page and share it with The Post or your friends; viewing photo galleries and videos while you read the paper; sharing stories via e-mail, Facebook and Twitter; saving any newspaper issue you want to keep; and for sports fans, you can set the app so you start reading from the Sports section every day. And make sure you tap the American flag on the front page! Back in 1989, Back to the Future II showed us what it would be like to live in the future. The future is today apparently as the absolutely awesome self-lacing Nike shoe is finally going up for sale. Unfortunately, it’s just one shoe and it’s an auction. The prop was worn by Michael J. Fox and this one in particular was made for walking (as opposed to just a lacing shot). The prop is expected to fetch $12,000-$15,000 at auction. That’s just a hair more than what most people are willing to pay for half a pair of shoes… To be fair to the creators of the movie, the “future” was supposed to be 2015, so they’ve got a few years left to make self-lacing shoes a reality. One hopeful prospect: Nike patented the idea earlier this year. Let’s just hope we won’t be suckered into a publicity stunt. According to the details given, the image came from the VZLearn internal portal, and while it looks like it could be real, we are still left wondering when. Not to mention how much. That said, assuming the Palm Pre 2 is coming to Verizon, this may be a hard upsell for current Pre Plus users. After all, I love my Pre Plus and I love webOS and would naturally like to have the newer handset, but at the same time I am going to be hard pressed to give up the free Mobile Hotspot that I have on my Pre Plus. Is it "I love Apple?", "that's cool!" or "sweet!"? Answer: none of them, it's "they are on crack." This week we take a look back at the things that made us chuckle in the tech world. This week, it seems there were more folks on dope than not. Lets get to this week's accused: Windows Phone trick or treat? Palm does the Pre, again and again HP has a mistress and its name is Android Proof: Verizon iPhone is so close, we can taste it. Windows Phone - what a sight or holiday fright? Like trying to pick the best costume after a 100 kids came a’knocking to your door on Halloween, I am not sure which phone is which after the Windows Phone event this week. Similar yet different. My eyes glazed over after the specs of the 3rd phone and by the 5th I was dizzy. Who’s keeping these things straight? It’s as if Android helped them. They saw their “throw it on everything” distribution model confirmed by Android’s meteoric rise to fame as proof it works. So, Microsoft was back at it, pitching a pocketful of potentially purposeful phones at the crowd. Overall, the buzz is positive. Ryan Kim over at GigaOm says Microsoft could bite into Android sales. On Windows Phone 7, Kim says, ” it provides the most wow and uniqueness since the iPhone appeared,” whereas Android feels “a touch unpolished at times.” I am not so sure. From bugs galore to Droid’s strong foothold, to RIM’s BlackBerry enterprise presense, and iPhone’s ubiquitous elephant in the room, where is there room for Windows Phone? Had it launched 2 years ago, sure, no problem, here’s you table by the window. Now, Windows Phone is left at the hostess stand looking at a lot of full tables with happy diners. No money in the hostess bra is going to get you any closer. To think otherwise might involve something being sold in the men’s room, and I don’t mean breath mints. (Sung to tune of “Time Warp”) Let’s do the Palm Pre again!” Oy. Did Palm/HP learn nothing from Windows Mobile? You can’t just keep improving a mediocre product and think you’ll eventually get it right. In fact, the only thing you do is make the ones that did buy it, feel bad that you didn’t get it right the first time. It’s like Pontiac came back and said, “hey, we added six cupholders and an AUX input for you iPod - we call it the 2010 Aztek. I hope this news from Shawn Ingram is wrong. “If this is the design of the new Palm Pre 2, let's hope this is early production. The design looks fine, reminiscent of the previous devices, but obviously a bit different to set it apart. However, that 320x480 screen is painful to see. Palm, and it's new parent company HP, both have obvious Apple envy with many products, so why not go all the way and imitate the 960x640 Retina Display? Please?” It’s going to take more than a pretty screen to the make this design a winner. HP needs to clamp down on these leaks, or leak something that excites us, no ones that make us feel like we were kicked in the USBs. I would have hoped HP didn’t incorporate the part of Palm that drives us all nuts: the oblivious to the changing times part. Let’s move away from the heartbreak the Pre was and start anew, OK? I am not against chipping in to buy HP’s mobile division a Pontiac Aztek each… HP slips Android onto printer, webOS says, “WTF?” HP is a massive company - it’s got loads of divisions, designers, sales teams. Can you imagine how many memo’s get sent out in a given day? So what if one goes missing? That must be the story behind the HP Photosmart C510 with Android on board. “I didn’t get the memo we were supposed to use webOS from now on,” is the only defense I can see in this one. The brass has been talking up how they’ll double down on webOS development and put it on everything in sight. “We forgot about the C510 group, they live underground in Montana and we just forgot to check in.” Our own Robert Nelson reported, “Not to mention the fancy sounding 7 inch Android tablet that comes along with, which just so happens to be described as a "digital companion and control panel for remote printing." Otherwise, the printer comes in priced at $399.99.” $399 for an Android tablet that comes with a bonus all-in-one printer? Um, you’ve still got some white stuff on your nose… Tasting the Verizon iPhone Hot-digity, news that Verizon is in bed with Apple rubs us the right way. Appletell’s Arnold Zafra tell us, “There you go. After becoming the all time fastest selling gadget (as announced by Bernstein Research financial analyst Colin McGranahan), Apple will carry the iPad momentum to the store shelves of AT&T and Verizon Wireless. Both major carriers have officially announced they will start offering iPads to customers on October 28.” Ver-to-the-i-to-the-zon! They are talking and have a successful negotiation to build on. This smacks me as proof positive - they are either working together or pregnant. A Verizon iPhone in 2011 looks like a lock. Our Robert Nelson throws up the inevitable, “my iPhone is better than your iPhone” ads we’ll see very soon. “One of the selling points for the iPhone has always been the ability to be talking on the phone and still surfing the web (or otherwise using data). The catch with that is Verizon does not currently allow for simultaneous voice and data.” An LTE (4G) iPhone would solve this but even if not, it’s just not that big a deal. Nice to have? Sure. Something that the legions of Verizon users have to have or jump ship? Not on your life. Is a Verizon iPhone still just wishful thinking by cracked-up analysts and bloggers? Hell yes. Oh, and there’s an LCD screen on the side of the tower if you’re trying to save some money (and considering the beastliness of this machine, you might want to). Here’s what the Vigor is rolling with: * Mil-anodized external chassis and shock-mounted internal chassis * 1 or 2 energy-efficient, server-class Intel® Xeon® processors * Up to 16GB ECC RAM * Internal storage capacity nearing 11TB * Up to six full-length, full-height PCI Express and PCI-X slots * Integrated 17-inch HD display * Optional 2nd and 3rd “swing-out” displays for panoramic viewing * Screen-less versions available – ideal for embedded applications such as vehicle mounted servers * System weight starting at 35 lbs. “Nobody will ever need more than 640KB of RAM” - Bill Gates. Boy how times have changed… I feel like I would conquer the world with 16GB of ram and 11TB of storage space. I’m also fairly certain that the Vigor would be able to handle Crysis XXIII without a hiccup. And come to think of it, using your computer tower as a monitor would be more space efficient (especially for those of bound within the confines of a 12’ X 12’ room). In terms of pricing, your guess is as good as mine. I would ballpark this thing in the five digit range. That being said, I feel that it’s safe to say that the Vigor can be thrown on that list of “items we want to buy but would never in our right mind pay for.” Via [Engadget] Full Story » | Written by Tarun Kunwar for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers As many have seen, the Dell Streak has come available with AT&T here in the US, and it looks like the tablet will soon be making its way across our northern border and into Canada. The rumor mill is calling for Rogers to release the Dell Streak sometime in early November. That said, we are still waiting on something a little more specific, plus it would be nice to learn the price.
