Is it "I love Apple?", "that's cool!" or "sweet!"? Answer: none of them, it's "they are on crack." This week we take a look back at the things that made us chuckle in the tech world. This week, it seems there were more folks on dope than not. Lets get to this week's accused: HP - not sure “doubling down” means what you think it means Expensive Tab, and I don’t mean the soda How Verizon could get me to switch The Droids are clones? Seriously HP, this is doubling down? This week, we were treated to a press release (not an event - heck even Windows Phone has an event) about the Palm Pre 2 and now we finally get some details about the Slate, Arnold Zafra explains, “(a)nd now for the most important information - the HP Slate 500 Tablet PC will get a decent $799 price tag. U.S. release date is yet to be announced. So, are we excited or not?“Um Um, in a word, no. I figured HP’s silence on the project since CES was because they were cramming webOS in there. We all expect webOS to do very, very well on a tablet. And you give us Windows with no skin (HP is pretty good at touch-based UIs)? Just so I am clear: You get the ball from Palm and bring us the HP Pre 2? Same form factor that resulted in Palm getting sold to you. Fumble. You get the ball from Ballmer on stage and launch the Slate 10 months later? Well after the iPad. Fumble. Perhaps that “double down” talk was a mix up with your lunch order from KFC? Chicken, bacon, cheese Chicken. With a side of crack. Tab-ulate a large bill Our Robert Nelson reports, “(t)here you go. Verizon Wireless has finally confirmed the availability of the Samsung Galaxy Tab on Nov. 11, contrary to what was previously rumored Nov. 1 availability date. So, this means that Verizon will still be releasing the Galaxy Tab a few days ahead of another rumored released by Sprint on Nov. 14. And the final price point? - $599.99.” eGads! $599 for a 7”? If we assume for the moment, the Tab is aimed at mainstream consumers who look at the lowest possible price and move from there, the Tab is too much. The simple evaluation of 10” iPad for $499 vs. 7” Tab for $599, it just makes no sense. We can debate the merits of open v. closed, app store wars, 7” vs 10”, etc. At the end of the day, I think Apple gets the nod for getting the $499 price right. Maybe on another carrier, the Tab will get subsidized and then we’ll see a real battle. Verizon to offer iPhone with free WiFi hotspot? If the iPhone ever makes it to Verizon, here’s something that might get me to swich as a current AT&T customer: free WiFi hotspot. What really bugs me about the iPad and Tabs are the data plans. I already pay for unlimited mobile data, why should it matter what device I choose to move data on? Verizon must do something to stem the simultaneous data/voice issue AT&T is sure to bring up time and time again. Offering this freebie would make buying an iPad an easier pill to swallow for a lot of folks, not just me. Think Verizon would stoop so low? The Droids are clones? I am not super smart. I have trouble keeping track of the days of the week, much less latest cell phone names that seem to propagate like ants in my kitchen. The Droid thing is out of control. It’s like there is this planet (China) that has found we’ve got whatever they crave, so they are sending wave after wave after wave like clones from Camino. First we had the Droid. Then, awkwardly we had the Droid Eris. OK, I deal with that. Then Droid 2, Droid R2-D2, Droid X, Droid Incredible, Droid Pro and now Droid SE (special edition - which infers the others were non-special - just sayin). And what’s worse, there seems to be no logic on when they get here, it’s like trying to figure out a train schedule written in another language. Consumers like me all have one thing in common: though we may be, we don’t want to look stupid. So we do research to try do find out when then next phone of the future is due to arrive. With the Droid, I have no idea when that is. I do with Apple (June), I do with Windows Phone (3 year intervals), I do with Palm (stopped caring). Can we have a roadmap? Can that roadmap not be whenever the boat from China arrives? Do I ask for too much? Of course, some of those were overwhelmed by the sudden suck of time wasting that had begun. And the anger came from those sporting an iPad who were quickly realizing that the FarmVille app was not universal. Well in a little bit of good news for anyone sporting an iPad, FarmVille by Zynga is now a universal app with proper support for the larger display on the iPad. In other words, iPad users can now begin wasting time having fun farming. That is, unless they moved onto one of the other similar games that already had an iPad version such as We Rule. Needless to say, the picture came along with the following title; Do you ever feel like your getting screwed in life??? With that, I then realized just how different the outlook of a geek vs a non-geek could be. What they saw as getting screwed, I saw as freaking awesome and proceeded to wonder if the machine was working and bootable. Personally, it seemed like many liked the idea of Hulu Plus but were simply not willing to pay $9.99 on a monthly basis to enjoy it. I fit into that category, in fact, I never even activated my preview invite because I did not want to pay. Anyway, the pricing rumors are coming courtesy of All Things D, who have stated that; Hulu is considering cutting the price of Hulu Plus, the subscription service it began testing in June, sources tell me. I'm told the video site is talking about slashing its $9.95 per-month fee in half, to $4.95. And as you may have already guessed, Hulu has declined to comment on the rumors. That said, for $4.95 I would be much more tempted to sign up. What about you, is it Hulu Plus or the current price that makes it not so attractive? Well, flash forward just one day and we now have some serious rumors that are pointing towards a new Nook ereader. Except, it looks like this will not be a run of the mill Nook 2 and instead will arrive as the Nook Color. Yup, a Nook with a 7 inch color touchscreen display. Otherwise, the Nook Color is expected to come priced at $249. As to why Barnes & Noble is taking this approach, according to the tipster, “it’s a big step ahead, instead of chasing Amazon.” Personally, I am not sure I could agree with that, as an ereader fan and user it seems like it is somewhere in the awkward middle between a dedicated reader like the Nook and a tablet like the iPad. That said, here it to waiting for October 26th and seeing if this is made official or not. Back then, many have predicted that this Windows 7 tablet is going to spell the iPad’s doom. Unfortunately after CES, we’ve not heard anything about the HP Slate. Until now, as official statements from HP details the tablet PC’s, specs and price details a few days after its Monday formal launch. According to the official documents, the device’s name would be officially - HP Slate 500 Tablet PC. Like what was previously stated, the HP Slate will be running Windows 7 Professional, and would come packed with a 1.86GHz Intel Atom Z540 Processor, a 64GB SSD, Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 500, 2GB of RAM, 64GB SSD, Broadcom’s Crystal HD accelerator, 8.9-inch LED-backlit display, VGA front-facing webcam, a 3MP back-facing camera, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n plus some accessories including HP Slate Digital Pen, HP Slate Dock, and HP Slate Portfolio. The HP Slate 500 will also be pre-loaded with Evernote, Adobe Acrobat, and Adobe Reader. Obviously, it would support Flash, so that gives it an edge over the iPad. And now for the most important information - the HP Slate 500 Tablet PC will get a decent $799 price tag. U.S. release date is yet to be announced. So, are we excited or not?
