Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile Among the mobile phone manufacturers that launched their Windows Phone 7 smartphones, Dell seems to be the odd man out. Well, we’ve known them for their power computers and netbooks but not as much as we know them for mobile phones. Anyway, for their share of the Windows Phone 7 frenzy, Dell is coming out with the Dell Venue Pro. Unfortunately, according to Dell, they are not yet ready to share full details of their Windows Phone 7 unit except for some major features that we should all expect from the unit. According to Dell, the Dell Venue Pro was designed for everyday people with a diverse range of full and and busy lives. These people need to be connected, productive and keep in touch with colleagues, friends and family. With those needs, the Dell Venue Pro’s major features would be - a 4.1-inch WVGA AMOLED capacitive, multi-touch display, and a full portrait QWERTY keyboard. Design-wise, the Dell smartphone will sport an elliptical and slender form that emits elegance in a pocket-friendly size. In addition, the Dell Venue Pro’s display will be made of Gorilla Glass to provide optimum durability and scratch resistance. And that’s just about it for this Windows Phone 7 unit from Dell. Stay tune as Dell promises to reveal more details of the Dell Venue Pro in the coming days. That’s because of those nine new phones, HTC is manufacturing five fo them, which is quite impressive. First up is the HTC Trophy, which seems to be the base for all the other phones. The Trophy has a 3.8-inch WVGA screen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 512 MB of RAM, 576 MB of ROM, 5 MP camera capable of 720p video and 8GB of internal storage. There is nothing particularly interesting about the Trophy, even less so for Americans, as this one doesn’t seem to be coming to any US carriers. Next we have two phones that specialize in audio. The first is the HTC Surround, which features a slide-out speaker and kickstand (which sits opposite the speaker, attached to the back of the screen). With the kickstand you’ll be able to watch your videos more easily and with the improved audio that combines Dolby Mobile and SRS WOW HD for “virtual surround sound.” The HTC Mozart features the same improved audio, but instead of a slide-out speaker has an improved build. The Mozart is made with an anodized aluminum unibody design, which should feel much sturdier than most other smartphones. The Mozart also beefs up the camera to 8 MP with Xenon flash. The Surround will be available on AT&T, while the Mozart will be on the T-Mobile network The only Sprint phone in the lineup is the HTC 7 Pro. The 7 Pro is a bit smaller than the other phones, with a 3.7-inch screen, but makes up for that .1-inch of screen with a landscape slide-out keyboard. Along with the keyboard, the 7 Pro packs in 16GB of internal storage. The rest is the same as the other phones, though the Pro won’t be shipping until the first half of 2011. The final HTC phone is arguably the best Windows Phone 7 phone announced today. It is the HTC HD7, which should be familiar to anyone who has used the EVO 4G or HTC Touch HD2. It has the same 4.3-inch screen size and has a kickstand like the EVO 4G, though the HD7 puts it up around the camera as opposed to on the bottom of the device. The HD7 will feature 16Gb of internal storage just like the 7 Pro. T-Mobile is carrying the device and will preload it with Slacker Radio, Netflix, TeleNav GPS and T-Mobile Family Room. For example, the ability to copy and paste is considered a must in today’s age of smartphone OS’s. In fact, Apple received much scrutiny for iOS not launching with copy and paste, but since it was a pioneering mobile OS, it was forgiven. At the Windows Phone 7 launch event, Microsoft exec, Andy Less, revealed to the public that copy and paste will not be included in the initial launch of the OS, but will be added in a software update shortly after launch. How soon after launch, you may be wondering? The official update is said to arrive in early 2011 and will also bring other updates. I suppose in order to the get the OS out the door and ready for prime time action, a few important components had to be left out. However, in order for Microsoft to compete with Apple, Google, and RIM, they are going to need to make the OS top notch without having to forgo important aspects. I have not used the original Sansa Fuze, so I cannot comment on any notable differences, but I am thoroughly impressed with the Sansa Fuze+. A few weeks ago, you may have read my unboxing post, where I mentioned a locking mechanism is not available. However, I stand corrected as there is a simple way to lock the device, albeit not by pressing a button, but by holding down the play/pause touch button. What is it? The SanDisk Sansa Fuze+ comes in a variety of models and colors. In terms of models, customers can choose from a 4GB, 8GB, or 16GB unit, and it costs $79, $89 and $119, respectively. The review Fuze+ I received is the purple 8GB model. In terms of colors, black i s available across all three units, white and purple are only available in the 8GB model, red is only available in the 4GB model, and blue is available in the 4GB and 8GB model. The Sansa Fuze+ handles a variety of audio, video, and picture formats such as: MP3, WMA, WAV, AAC/M4A, FLAC, Ogg Vorbis, Audible, Secure WMA, H.264, MPEG-4, WMV, JPEG, BMP, TIFF, GIF, and PNG. Lastly, it features a 2.4 inch QVGA LCD screen, FM radio, and voice recorder capabilities. The Good The Apple iPod is undoubtedly the most popular MP3 player, but many people prefer inexpensive alternatives to the iPod such as SanDisk devices. The SanDisk Sansa Fuze+ is a great device for people who want a cheaper alternative to the iPod that still comes with many important features. The Sansa Fuze+ features 8GB of storage, which is more than enough to store my music library and several videos, and in case 8GB is not enough, it also comes with a microSD slot for memory expansion up to 32GB. For me, simplicity is a must, and transferring my music library to the Sansa Fuze+ was a simple task that only took a short period of time. It is also important to note the Sansa Fuze+ supports SlotRadio cards, which are microSD cards created by SanDisk that feature preloaded music of select genres. Putting videos on the Fuze+ takes a little more time and patience, as you need to download a free, proprietary video converter from SanDisk online. After that, all you have to do is let the converter do the work and transfer the video to the device. Battery life on the MP3 player is definitely a strong point, as it boasts a 24 hour audio life and 5 hours when playing video. It easily gets through the work week on a single charge, which is nice because I don't have to remember to keep charging it. The FM radio, a feature found commonly on MP3 players, is easy to use and it allows you to save pre-set stations. In addition, you can record music from the radio and replay it at a different time. Similarly, the device features a voice recorder, which is a great way to capture audio and listen to it later in time. I mentioned earlier in the review I mentioned how the Sansa Fuze+ supports a variety of formats, and then is definitely a strength of the device. No matter what format your music library is in, chances are it is supported by the SanDisk player. Lastly, SanDisk really tried to improve upon the User Interface in the Fuze+ and I believe they created a winner. The UI is really easy to navigate and users new to SanDisk should have no problem with it. It conveniently lays out all the different menu settings and it even combines various album art to create the background image. The Bad One of the few complaints I have about the device is its revamped "invisible touch screen." Basically, below the screen is a directional pad except you slide your finger up/down and right/left to navigate through the menu. Sometimes it will over scroll because you swiped too hard, and sometimes it takes a while to move down a list. Personally, I'm a fan of click wheels and not this type of capacitive touch. Final Thoughts With so many smartphones and feature phones able to play music, MP3 player innovation has practically halted. In case you still prefer having a standalone MP3 player and do not wish to purchase an expensive iPod, you should definitely consider the SanDisk Sansa Fuze+. My only complaint is its touch navigation, but that is only because I prefer a device with buttons. Today, Droid-Life is reporting a rumor cited by two sources claiming Verizon Wireless will launch the Samsung Galaxy Tab on November 1, which coincides with the United Kingdom launch. The Sprint rumor claims the Galaxy Tab will launch November 14, so the Verizon rumored launch is two weeks ahead of Sprint. Considering Verizon was the last to join the Galaxy S parade, it is not surprising that Verizon wants to launch the Galaxy Tab first. Unfortunately, no word on pricing, but if the rumors from Sprint and T-Mobile are to be believed, then it is likely the Galaxy Tab would retail for $399 on a two year contract with Verizon. With all four American carriers launching the same device, it’s going to come down to consumer carrier preferences and loyalty to decide which carrier will sell the most Galaxy Tabs. And that little bit showed off some app icons to include Pulse, TapTap Revenge, eBay and Angry Birds. And sadly, it seems as if Microsoft has jumped the gun a little bit with the use of the Angry Birds icon. According to Rovio Mobile; We have NOT committed to doing a Windows Phone 7 version. Microsoft put the Angry Birds icon on their site without our permission. Thankfully though, while Rovio has yet to commit to a Windows Phone 7 release, they have not ruled it out. Based on a later tweet; “we are looking into it” It looks like Angry Birds fans that are going to be picking up a Windows Phone 7 smartphone can at least remain hopeful. There are many reasons why we can say that T-Mobile was lucky to be the only US mobile operator to release this smartphone during the holiday season. For one thing, the HTC HD7 happens to have the biggest 4.3-inch touch display among the new Windows Phone 7 units. With the current crop of smartphones in the market today, HTC HD7’s big display could certainly match up against the market leaders. But of course, the good features of the HTC HD7 smartphone don’t stop there. This smartphone is powered by a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8250 processor, 576MB of RAM, 5MP camera with dual-LED flash, 16GB of internal memory, GPS with turn-by-turn navigation courtesy of TeleNav GPS Navigator, and 720/24p video recording capability. It will also come preinstalled with Netflix, Slacker and T-Mobile’s own TV entertainment apps. To entice you more in getting this smartphone, the HTC HD7 also has the cool app called - T-Mobile Family Room. Exclusive to T-Mobile, this app will help family members keep in touch with each other through a virtual chalkboard and shared calendar events. Sounds good enough? It seems that the rumored Windows Phone 7 dubbed Samsung Focus which is supposed to be released by AT&T on November 8 is not going to be the first Windows 7 phone after all. In fact, it seems that there will be two Windows 7 phones, the Samsung Omnia 7 and LG Optimus 7. Details of both phones were revealed from the Samsung Russian site and the LG UK Blog. So what are we looking at here? Let’s start with the Samsung Omnia 7. Said smartphone will have a 4-inch Super Amoled display with touch controls, 1GHz Qualcomm QSD8250 processor, 5MP camera, 8GB internal storage, Bluetooth 2.1, Wi-Fi and HSPA. In addition, the Samsung Omnia 7 will also support Microsoft’s Xbox LIVE and Zune. The LG Optimus 7 on the other hand will have a 3.8-inch screen with 800x480 pixels, 5MP camera with HD video capture, 16GB of memory, Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Of course, release dates and pricing details of these two smartphones are still unknown. Hopefully we’ll know later on together with other Windows 7 smartphones that might be announced by Microsoft. In the meantime, how do you find these two smartphones so far? Can these smartphones compete in the market? Not only have we seen images of the iPad hitting the store shelves, but we also have what appears to be some legitimate pricing. So far nothing overly surprising in regards to the prices as they appear to be the same as what Apple is selling them for. In other words, expect to pay $499, $599 or $699 for the 16GB, 32GB or 64GB Wi-Fi only model and $629, $729 or $829 for the 16GB, 32GB or 64GB Wi-Fi + 3G model. The one interesting bit comes in to the quantity, so far it appears as if Wal-Mart is not making a big commitment and will only have five of each on hand.
