Boxee Box finally coming on November 10

Section: Video, Gadgets / Other

Boxee Box launch on November 10, 2010

November is coming quickly, and with it, the release of the Boxee Box.  Previously, all we had for the launch of the Boxee Box is the month of November, and now we have an actual date, November 10.

Amazon will begin shipping the Boxee Box pre-orders on November 10.  Other American retailers will start receiving the box to sell online and in stores on November 17.  There is also promise that other countries that can pre-order the device (Canada, Australia, New Zealand and United Kingdom, as well as other European countries) will get the device around the same time.

To celebrate the launch of the Boxee Box, and the Boxee 1.0 software that will be on it, Boxee is planning an event in New York City.  The launch event will happen on November 10, in a location that hasn’t been announced yet.  The event will likely be streamed for those who can’t make it, though you can be sure that at least one Gadgetell writer will try their best to get there.

HTC Desire HD now available in some UK online stores

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile

HTC Desire HD

So how long have you been desiring the HTC Desire HD  since it was announced couple of weeks ago? Unfortunately, despite several pre-release announcements, the HTC Desire HD is nowhere to be found in U.S. online stores. Your best bet in getting the HTC Desire is to check out a couple of UK online stores which have started offering the said phone.

uSwitch is offering the HTC Desire HD on either plan option or SIM free. But if you decide to have it without a SIM be prepared to shell out 465 pounds. Another online store offering the smartphone is Expansys with options to get it SIM-free for 499 pounds or under a two year Vodafone plan which will cost you 35 pounds a month.

Other sites are offering the HTC Desire on pre-order status right now. Sites like Play.com and others will most probably get their stocks before October 25. In case you missed previous announcements, the HTC Desire HD features a 4.3 inch screen similar to the HTC EVO 4G and runs Android 2.2.

Rumored release date: Samsung Continuum & LG Vortex coming to Verizon on October 29th

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

In addition to the BlackBerry Storm 3 coming to Verizon rumors, we have word of a few Android models. These include the Samsung Continuum and the LG Vortex, both of which can be described as mid-range and have been tipped for an October 29th release. Assuming all of these are accurate then it sounds like Verizon is going to be having a few big months in terms of October and November. After all, we have also heard that the Droid Pro, Droid 2 Global Edition, HTC Merge and Motorola Citrus were coming available on November 11th. Of course, while all this sounds nice, these are all far from official at this point.

NBA bans high tops that add 3.5" to your jump

NBA bans high tops that add 3.5 to your jump

Banned by the NBA.  Is there a better tag line for selling shoes to kids in college and high school?  If there is, the team at Athletic Propulsion Labs havent figured it out yet.

ESPN reported yesterday that the shoes would be banned.  The NBA say “(u)nder league rules, players may not wear any shoe during a game that creates an undue competitive advantage,” the NBA said in a statement Tuesday.”  ESPN says many players were interested in the shoes, despite having contracts to wear another brands logos.

The controversy comes thanks to “Load and Launch” technology.  The concept is the unit, under the forefoot compresses then expands when a player jumps.  The expansion does so with force to edge the player upward.  Sweet.

The shoes are $300 and available in black or white.

Would you put webOS 2.0 on your iPhone?

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile

Would you put webOS 2.0 on your iPhone 4?

After reading Joshua Tolposky’s review of webOS 2.0 and my own dealing with webOS 1.0, I was kept up last night thinking about how cool it would be if I could load it onto my iPhone 4 hardware.  If it could be done, would you?

I loved my time reviewing both the Palm Pre and Palm Pixi but was left feeling the hardware got in the way.  Many reviewers felt this way, but with the announcement of 2.0 and the uber-disappointing (to me anyway) Pre 2, there has to be something better, anything would be better.  The legion of touchscreen lovers expect something more than a small screen coupled with a crippled keyboard.

From Tolpolsky’s review,

“(d)espite some issues, webOS 2.0 is probably neck and neck with iOS4 when it comes to polish and ease of use, and that’s a pretty huge thing for Palm. This isn’t just a good OS, it’s a great OS…”

So, let’s say I’ve figured a way to load webOS 2.0 on an iPhone 4 hardware (complete with free bumper).  Are you in?  More than a little interested?  Let us know in the comments.

Here’s my answer: I think so.  The ease of use, even simpler navigation, way smarter notifications get me excited.  I really like the cards mentality and ease of getting between them compared to Apples version of multi-tasking.  I’ve got some issues with Apps that I love that are not on webOS yet such as Navionics, but I figure with so many of switching, it won’t be long until they submit to my requests for a new version for webOS.

So read over the review and let us know what you think.

BlackBerry Storm 3 spotted in Verizon's Cellebrite system

BlackBerry Storm 3 spotted in Verizon's Cellebrite system

While this is far from official evidence that the BlackBerry Storm 3 is coming to Verizon. Remember, this was supposedly killed of by RIM back in early-October. However the Storm 3, aka BlackBerry 9570 was recently spotted in the Verizon Cellebrite system. Of course, the timing for this find does coincide nicely with the once rumored November release timeframe. Could the BlackBerry 9570 Storm 3 be back on track for an upcoming release with Verizon? Does anyone even care?

Verizon iPhone: Good morning Vietnam?

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

RichyRich finds a Verizon iPhone 4Straight out of Vietnam come these images, purportedly of Verizon’s iPhone, codenamed N92.  The blogger reporting, Richy Rich, says his source had posession of the phone and believes it was in a Vietnam repair shop.  Perhaps it needed an oil change?

Today, I'm happy to report a follow up to that post with live shots of an "N92DVT" device, which was reported to be the CDMA version of the iPhone 4 back in August by John Gruber.

On Monday, BoyGenius reported his sources say the Verizon variant reached AP stage, the last stage before release.  If this is a DVT-stage unit, there are some things to note:

-It would appear Apple is leaving the antenna position alone.  With the launch of iPhone 4 and the subsequent outcry of users complaining then held “a certain way” (ie. with left hand), reception for voice and data decline dramatically, Apple was forced into passing out cases to resolve the issue.  It would seem they will go back for another round with Verizon customers.  Or perhaps a simple coating upgrade (that will never get mentioned by Apple) do the job?

-Richy Rich also comments (as did BoyGenius) that their remains a microSIM slot on the presumably CDMA device.
-Based on BoyGenius’ report, I could have dummied up my iPhone 4 to make it look like it was running inferno too.  We’ve really got nothing new here, so take it with a grain of salt…more images for link followers.

Pandora comes to TiVo Series 3 and TiVo HD

Now stream music via TiVo and Pandora

It’s a happy day for TiVo Series 3 and TiVo HD users!  The update to include Pandora stream music has been granted down the food chain.  Activation is simple and fast.

Users can navigate to the Music, Photos and Showcases, then to Pandora.  TiVo will generate an activation code that needs to be verified at pandora.com.  Once entered and logged in, users with a Pandora account can access all their stations, thumbs up or thumb down music, create a new station and delete stations.

It’s a very nice integration that TiVo and Pandora users have been waiting for.  Thanks to TiVo for bringing this down to older units.  I am using Pandora via TiVo as I write this, it works great.

Palm Pre 2 (in CDMA and GSM flavors) make the required FCC appearance

Palm Pre 2 (in CDMA and GSM flavors) make the required FCC appearance

Just as one would expect given yesterdays announcement, the Palm Pre 2 has been spotted in an FCC filing. And this time we have learned nothing really new. The FCC listings included one for a CDMA version and one for a GSM version. For those keeping track, the CDMA version is heading to Verizon here in the US and as been rumored for release on November 11th. Otherwise, in terms of the US, that GSM version is most likely going to be the unlocked developer model, however it will be compatible with AT&T 3G bands. That said, at this time we have no word of the Palm Pre 2 coming available with AT&T (or Sprint).
