Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking I guess you have to keep finding ways to innovate, right? Facebook has now created a new feature (found under the account settings section) that will allow you to download all of your Facebook information including photos, posts, videos and other general information straight to your desktop. Just when you thought you couldn’t find any other ways to reach your beloved Facebook page, Mark and company have just thrown another avenue at us. “We built this because being able to download a copy of your information is important when it comes to having control of your data.” The download basically puts all of your information from Facebook into a Zip file that can be accessed from your computer at any time. This is completely different from visiting your actual Facebook page because…well, I suppose it’s not that different now is it? The practicality factor on this one is yet to dawn on me to be honest, so let’s think this through. Hypothetical situation: Jane Doe downloads her Facebook page onto her desktop and has all of her information in a file format as opposed to having it displayed on a browser. What can she do with the exact same information in a different format that she couldn’t already do? Someone let me know what I’m missing here. And coming as a little change, there may be a sign of hope that they will remain. The news comes thanks to the users, who apparently did not take the news of a shut down lightly. According to the Xmarks blog, they have been amazed at the “power of community.” But more important is the community they are speaking about have gotten enough attention that Xmarks now has “multiple offers from companies ready and willing to take over the service and keep making browser sync better and better!” Bottom line, there is still hope that Xmarks will remain a working service. The improvements made to Firefox 4 have been quite impressive so far, and now some of those improvements are making their way to your Maemo and Android smartphones. Formerly known as Fennec, Firefox 4 Beta for mobile has hit the beta stage, and is apparently based on the same technologies as the desktop version, but optimized for the browser. According to Mozilla, the browser has improved responsiveness by separating the processes for page rendering and everything else in the browser, which sounds like a good idea. For the end user, Firefox 4 Beta for mobile has the touch-friendly features you’d expect like pinch-to-zoom and double-tap to zoom as well as a thumbnail view for tabbed browsing. And interesting feature is the “Awesome Screen,” which comes up by just tapping on the Awesome Bar (location bar), and populates with your recently visited sites, bookmarks, and tabs. The mobile browser also features Firefox Sync, so you can sync your bookmarks, tabs, history, and saved log-ins, making it much easier to switch between browsing on your phone and computer. It will also feature add-ons at some point, though they don’t seem to be in this version. So, if you have a Maemo device or an Android phone running Android 2.0+, go ahead and pick it up. For those of us using iPhones we’ll have to stick with Firefox Home if we want to use Firefox Sync. BlackBerry users will have to try to forget that this beta exists, and continue lusting after the PlayBook instead of worrying about silly open-sourced software on other, possibly more popular mobile os. The handset is not going to be the highest spec’d Android smartphone on the market, but should be decent enough for most. And with a fair unlocked price tag, it should make a compelling device. Well, that is assuming Sony Ericsson gets with the program in terms of Android. The Xperia X8 is going to ship with the already old and outdated Android 1.6. Yup, Android 1.6. Though in a bit of fairness, they are promising to bring the X8 up to Android 2.1 sometime “later this year.” Otherwise, the Xperia X8 comes touting features to include a 3 inch capacitive touchscreen display, 600MHz processor and 3.2 megapixel camera as well as the usual perks to include a microSD card slot, GPS, Wi-Fi. Yup, it looks like the BlackBerry Storm 9570 has been given the dreaded EOL (end of life) before it has even been released. The details are coming by way of BBLeaks who have received word that “RIM has decided not to pursue this device further and has ended the program.” Via [BBLeaks] Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile Though the website has since been pulled down, Motorola had posted some of the specs for the Droid 2 Global edition smartphone. The handset is clearly heading to Verizon and will come touting specs to include a 1.2Ghz processor, 5 megapixel camera with autofocus and dual LED flash, Android 2.2 and a “improved touchscreen” as well as a “thinner slide-out QWERTY keyboard with improved tactile response.” In addition the Droid 2 Global is noted as having up to 40GB of storage, which we can only assume comes by way of 8GB internally and then a 32GB microSD card. Sadly though, even with these details, we still have nothing in terms of an image.
