The T-Mobile myTouch HD Android smartphone has recently been announced and is not yet available for sale. Not to mention, we are still not even sure when that release date will be as T-Mobile offered the details as sometime “in time for the holidays.” Well, for those waiting for the myTouch HD to come to market, here are the official T-Mobile fact sheets to tease you a little more. All said and done, for the most part the details where what was expected, but there was one goodie in that of T-Mobile TV which will include programming from networks such as ABC News Now, Fox Sports, PBS Kids, Univision and Disney. Otherwise, the myTouch HD will also come pre-loaded with Rock Band as well as an FM Radio and the Slacker Radio app.

T-Mobile statement on the G2 smartphone only allowing temporary root

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

If you have seen any of the hoopla in regards to the T-Mobile G2 not being able to be rooted. Or more specifically, how the G2 can be rooted but it will restore back to an original non-root state after the next boot which in the end means it can only be rooted temporarily—here is the official follow-up statement from T-Mobile.

Code-Level Modifications to the G2

As pioneers in Android-powered mobile devices, T-Mobile and HTC strive to support innovation.  The T-Mobile G2 is a powerful and highly customizable Android-powered smartphone, which customers can personalize and make their own, from the look of their home screen to adding their favorite applications and more.

The HTC software implementation on the G2 stores some components in read-only memory as a security measure to prevent key operating system software from becoming corrupted and rendering the device inoperable. There is a small subset of highly technical users who may want to modify and re-engineer their devices at the code level, known as "rooting," but a side effect of HTC's security measure is that these modifications are temporary and cannot be saved to permanent memory.  As a result the original code is restored.

Bottom line, this is only affecting a small subset of users, granted they are vocal users but T-Mobile does have some good points. That said, I would still think that someone will eventually find a workaround, though it just means the job will be that much harder and take that much longer.

Yahoo! plans new Video Messenger app for Android, iOS

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Yahoo! Messenger As more and more smartphones begin to sport front facing video cameras, the market for apps that handle video messaging efficiently has becoming increasingly attractive.  Many options such as Fring, Tango, and Qik are available, but we have yet to see a big name company get into the game.  In the press release announcing T-Mobile’s new myTouch smartphone, it made mention of users’ ability to video chat through Yahoo! Messenger.

Recently, David Katz, Yahoo's VP of Mobile for the Americas region, gave the low down to Reuters in terms of what smartphone owners can expect from the revamped Yahoo! Messenger app.  The app is expected to be released for Android users in the near future with the ability to work across 3G and Wi-Fi.  Interestingly, the video part of the app will work with PC and Mac users running Yahoo! Messenger—finally making video chat from smartphone to desktop/laptop a reality.

As you probably know, Apple is very adamant about video apps running only over Wi-Fi, as its native FaceTime only operates on Wi-Fi.  As a result, the iOS version of Yahoo! Messenger has not yet been approved.

Gadgetell is hiring!

Section: Features, Gadgetell Announcements

Gadgetell has been growing and we have found ourselves in need of a few more quality bloggers. Think you have what it takes to join the team? Read on and find out what we are looking for and then how to apply.

We are looking for a weekday and a weekend blogger, or someone willing to take on both. A little more specifically;

The first being someone who can contribute often, and by often I mean on a daily, or at least an almost daily basis to include weekdays and weekends. I would say this person would average at least 10 posts per week.

The second being someone who wants to write primarily on the weekends. Of course, anyone who fills this role will be welcomed to post during the week. But the main focus is for weekend coverage. This person would most likely average about 6-8 posts per weekend.

Assuming you are ok with those roles and posting expectations—we really need someone who loves tech/gadgets. You know the type—the person who loves tech so much that other people get tired of hearing them talk because that is all they talk about. Or the person who sits at the dinner table with a laptop, tablet or smartphone because they cannot part with the Internet for even a few minutes. In short, we are looking for the tech obsessed.

If you are interested, here is what you need to do to apply. Send an email to robert (at) gadgetell (dot) com and include;

  • For new bloggers, two sample posts that would fit on Gadgetell. Don't worry they will not be used, but we want to see what you are capable of.
  • For experienced bloggers, show us some links to other writing that you have done. These should be relevant to tech/gadgets and should also be current.

Finally, tell us a little about you, what you currently do, how much time you can realistically dedicate to Gadgetell and why you think you would be a good fit. And make sure you let us know how to get back in touch with you just in case we like what you submit. In the email, use “Gadgetell Blogger Hiring” as the subject.

And yes these are paid positions.

Google retires directory assistance service, GOOG-411

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Google

GOOG-411 Have you used Google’s directory assistance service, 1-800-GOOG-411? Or have you constantly used it before? Well, whether you found it useful or not, we regret to inform you that Google is shutting down the service come November 12. According to Google, their thrust now is more on innovating and focusing more of their resources into speech-enabling Google products and services across a multitude of languages.

Goog-411 was launched in 2007. Back then, it was a pretty useful service and was favored to be used by many as compared to other directory assistance in the U.S. and Canada which were either running on a paid scheme or pre-rolling with ads. But with the advent of voice-powered search on smartphones, especially those running Google Android OS, it’s not really surprising why Google is finally shutting down this service. To think that Google even defied its traditional online publicity stunt by putting out huge billboards advertising GOOG-411.

As an alternative, Google is now encouraging the use of its various voice-enabled search assistance services including voice search, voice input, and voice actions for those with smartphones. If you don’t own a smartphone and you have no immediate plans of getting one, you can still partake of Google’s directory assistance service by sending a text message to 466453 (‘GOOGLE’) containing the name and location of the business you are looking for and Google will reply with the information you need.

So, are you going to miss GOOG-411 starting November 12? Or do you prefer to get assistance through your smartphones?

Rumor: Sprint to launch Samsung Galaxy Tab on November 14 for $399 on two year contract

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

Samsung Galaxy Tab Even though each of the four main U.S. carriers have announced their intentions to sell the Samsung Galaxy Tab, none have officially announced pricing or availability information.  However, BGR received a tip from “one of [their] Sprint sources” stating the Galaxy Tab will be available on November 14 for $399 on a two year contract.

In case you prefer to purchase the Galaxy Tab off contract, the Sprint sources claims it will then be available for $599.  Of course, this information has not been confirmed officially by Sprint, but the pricing and availability date does make sense.  It makes the Galaxy Tab competitive with the iPad and it would launch right before the Holiday season.

HTC Merge / Lexikon rumored to be launching on November 11th with Verizon Wireless

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

This one is short and to the point. Granted that is in part because we have seen so much come by way of leaks already, however the HTC Merge is currently being rumored for a November 11th launch with Verizon Wireless. In terms of price, so far that is speculated to be $199 on a two year agreement, which if you take a look at past Verizon launches, it seems about right.
