Dead Drops: An Art Project That Puts Memory Where Your Mortar Is

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 04:59 PM PDT

What you see here is part of an art project called Dead Drops. USB drives are stuck into walls around New York City and users are encouraged to connect and upload and download whatever they want. Knowing New York these things will soon either be coated in slime or filled with chork porn it it’s definitely a fun project.

The devices are at the following places:

87 3rd Avenue, Brooklyn, NY (Makerbot)

Empire Fulton Ferry Park, Brooklyn, NY (Dumbo)

235 Bowery, NY (New Museum)

Union Square, NY (Subway Station 14th St)

West 21st Street, NY (Eyebeam)

Each drive contains a readme explaining the project and there are will be updates on the project website. My favorite is this shot of our buddy Bre Pettis getting his drop on.

Quirky Contort Keeps Your USB Cables Looking Sassy

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 12:58 PM PDT

The Quirky Contort is basically a four port USB hub with a trick: it also acts as a cable organizer so after you plug in all your goodies you can keep them all wrapped up and neat. The device costs $29.99 for pre-order ($35 when it comes out).

Contort, Flexible USB Hub Manager, Hits Quirky’s Online Store – collaboratively developed by Quirky’s community

New York, NY, October 27, 2010 — Today marks the official release of Contort — a community-developed USB hub that manages your drives and cables while protecting them.

Your standard USB thumb drive is just one accidental bump away from sending your valuable files into oblivion. Don’t fear; the Quirky Contort is here. Contort is a four-port USB hub and cord manager, with a 360-degree flexible rubber neck to protect all your USB devices from accidental damage. Cooler still, Contort has a built-in cord management wrap with four anchors to corral your cables. This super lightweight hub measures 34 mm x 142 mm and transports easily — just wrap up your cables and go.

Following the success of Pivot Power, Cordies and the PowerCurl, Contort is the latest addition to Quirky’s cord management line.

Contort is the 59th product designed and developed by the Quirky community since Quirky’s launch on June 2, 2009. Quirky gives everyone the chance to get product ideas out of their heads and onto shelves. Each week, Quirky’s community collaborates to select and produce one new product idea. This week ends the development phase of Contort, and it is now available for pre-sale in Quirky’s online store for $29.99 (MSRP: $34.99).

Quirky engages participants to collaborate in every aspect of product creation — from ideation, design, naming, manufacturing, marketing, right on through to sales. Anyone can participate on Quirky.com either by submitting their own product idea for $10, or by voting, rating, and influencing other people’s product ideas. Cooler still, 30¢ of every dollar generated from the sale of a Quirky product goes back to these influencers.

The final product becomes available for pre-sale in the Quirky online store (quirky.com/products). Once the product hits its pre-sale threshold, credit cards are charged, and the product goes into production and delivery. At this point, 30¢ of every dollar made from the direct sale of these products goes back to the community. “Community” in this case covers both the ideator as well as all people who voted, commented, and rated the project idea along the way.

Which Cellphone Did The Yemeni Terrorists Use?

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 07:50 AM PDT

If you look closely at this shot of the bombs allegedly sent from Yemen to Chicago you’ll notice what looks like a small camera up in the corner. Slide down the side and you see the volume buttons and I suspect the silver area is where the battery holder once stuck to the circuit board. It’s clear that this was a phone – probably of modern vintage – so which phone is it?

Screen shot 2010-10-30 at 10.34.41 AM Lemon D321 Lemon Duo 321 pic_wp
I originally suspected that this was a very low-end model from Nokia or Motorola but we also have to remember that it would be an international phone, able to connect to AT&T or T-Mobile in US provided someone wanted to set it off.

Judging by the small D321 on the bottom of the board and the layout of the camera and components, we’re probably look at something like the Lemon Duo 321, a dual SIM cameraphone with rear camera. Interestingly, the Lemon Duo only recently came out, which suggests that whatever this is it’s available as an OEM device sold to multiple carriers around the world.

From the product description:

The new Lemon Duo 321 is a stylish Dual SIM GSM mobile phone featuring 2 colour changeable Back Panels .The changeable back panel color options are blue and purple. The default back panel color is Lemon .The new Lemon Duo 321 sports a 2.2-inch display screen,Video Player, FM Radio,Expandable Memory Up to 4 GB and social networking application Lemon Twist which gives quick access to Yahoo Mail, Yahoo Astrology, Yahoo Cricket, Nimbuzz, and Facebook.

It’s clear, also, that the very tools the bombmaker used to build his device could get him caught quite quickly. Logs, registers, and other identifying information probably point to one location or purchaser and we can only hope that by assessing how this one was built we can more quickly prevent these sorts of things from slipping past us.

UPDATE – The commenters are right. It’s 100% the Nokia 6120c built in 2007. It’s also possible that the Lemon is a direct knock-off based on the shape.

Review: Phosphor’s E-Ink World Time Watch

Posted: 30 Oct 2010 05:24 AM PDT

Short version: A low-maintenance, good-looking gimmick watch, but e-ink gives the watch weaknesses as well as an interesting look. Recommended if you think you can pull it off.

Features:

  • Dual-timezone E-ink display
  • Rubber or steel band
  • Several face styles
  • MSRP: $165

Pros:

  • Good-looking, not too sci-fi
  • Comfortable
  • Showing two timezones can be handy

Cons:

  • No backlight; illegible in the dark
  • Not suitable for formal occasions

Full review:

I’m not a big fan of gimmick watches. While I love that guys like Tokyoflash are pushing design forward when it comes to wrist wear, I worry that much of their work is too esoteric and could alienate some potential watch nerds with their complexity. The biggest problem, I feel, is that on the low end the watch world is separated, like computer RPGs, into two two camps – the Tolkein-esque “fancy watch” (think Fossil watches that look like they’re from the 1930s) and the Final Fantasy-esque “tech watch.” Luckily, the Phosphor E-Ink World Time straddles the line quite nicely and, as a result, will please almost any watch lover.

The Phosphor E-Ink World Time is a $165 time piece that uses an E-Ink screen to show two timezones simultaneously. The watch, in all modes, is amazingly easy to read and comfortable to wear. It has multiple “face” styles including time only, time/date, and a face that shows one foreign time along with local time. You set the face style by pressing right side of the single button on the face and you set your current country by tapping the left side of the button. You can reverse the type by holding down the left part of the button, creating a black background with white letters. You set the time and date by holding down the right side of the main button.

There is no back-light, a huge issue with watches like these. It is almost useless at night, which makes me sad, but presumably that’s the price you pay for e-ink.

Barring that one complaint, however, generally this is a very low maintenance, set-it-and-forget it watch. You can wear it with jeans – it might be too Star Trek for a suit – and it’s quite large and handsome without looking like a pie plate on your wrist. Phosphor has a unique curved case style that, if you know anything about watchmaking, is amazing and even if you don’t it adds quite a bit of comfort. The rubber band is comfortable as well but I usually recommend getting a steel band if only to prevent eventual cracking.

For $165 the E-Ink World Time is a great timepiece and it definitely doesn’t look like a dork watch. It’s legible, usable, and very cool – it’s a definite conversation starter, even if you won’t enjoy the conversation it starts.

TextPlus iOS app updated, now offering actual phone numbers

The free text and picture messaging app textPlus has announced a new feature—phone numbers. Yup, the textPlus app for the iPhone, iPod touch and iPad has recently been updated and now when launched it will give you the option to get an actual phone number. In other words, your Text Plus setup will now allow you to receive text messages from anyone capable of texting to a regular phone number. And yes, as mentioned, it is a free phone number. Though, a little catch with the free number, you must accept the number they assign you. Otherwise if you want a custom number based on a specific area code, you can choose for a small price $1.99 per year. With that, the only other catch comes in the form of the phone numbers begin available only for those in the US.

The update comes in the form of version 4.2 and according to the change log includes;

Phone Numbers

  • Now your friends can text you at a real phone number - make sure you get one!
  • Two options - Get a Free number OR go Premium and pick your own area code & own it for a year
  • Easily share your new number so your friends can text you back right away

Emoticon Picker

  • Tap the icon next to the message bar - makes sending emoticons easier

More Convenient Messaging

  • Messages with the same person are now threaded

More fun stuff in textPlus 4:

  • Promote your Communities on Facebook, Twitter, Email or the App Store
  • Try Face Text - like sending a text from a photo booth (iPhone 4 and new iPod touch)

Redbox looks to compete with Netflix, announces streaming service will arrive next year

Redbox looks to compete with Netflix, announces streaming service will arrive next year

What was once a rumor has now been confirmed, Redbox has announced plans to launch a streaming service in 2011. The news comes by way of Coinstar CEO Paul Davis who confirmed the news during their recent earnings call.

“During the company’s quarterly earnings call Thursday, Coinstar CEO Paul Davis said that Redbox is in “detailed negotiations with a number of highly interested parties” looking to join forces on movie streaming, and that the company hopes to launch a “Redbox-branded” online service sometime in 2011.”

Of course, while we now know that Redbox is looking to go streaming, there are still plenty of unknowns—pricing, available plans and perhaps most important—the hardware. Otherwise, the Redbox branded service is expected to compete with Netflix in that it will offer an unlimited amount of streaming for a set price. And honestly, for them to be successful in the light of Netflix, it seems that is almost the only option available.

Facebook to host special mobile event on November 3

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking, Websites

Facebook Mobile Event Invitation

Mark your calendar for November 3, folks.  Facebook is scheduled to host an event at Facebook Headquarters.  The invitation only seems to imply the event will revolve around mobile, but doesn’t give any other hints.  You may remember back in September when TechCrunch broke the story of Facebook creating a smartphone, probably with thorough Facebook integration.  Even though Facebook was quick to deny it, the possibility of a social networking site creating a smartphone is certainly an interesting proposition.

However, we could be interpreting this event in the wrong way—it may simply be an update from Mark Zuckerberg on improvements to the Facebook app on iOS, Android, BlackBerry, and/or webOS.  Whatever information Facebook reveals at the event on Wednesday, we’ll be sure to follow up with complete coverage.

Verizon-branded Palm Pre 2 surfaces in hands-on video

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

The crew over at PhoneScoop have been lucky enough to spend a few minutes with the yet-to-be-released Palm Pre 2. The model they were playing with was Verizon branded, but that aside, they offered some feedback on the handset itself as well as a few words about webOS 2.0.

Some of the good points included how the “overall fit and feel of the Pre 2 is solid” and that the “biggest and most welcome improvement to the hardware is the keyboard.” Interestingly enough, the biggest was not the processor, which was increased to 1GHz. Though that little tidbit did not go un-noticed.

“The Pre 2 has a 1GHz processor, and the webOS 2.0 platform absolutely FLIES now. There is absolutely no delay when performance UI actions, such as multitasking, sorting through cards, and swiping around the menus. The speed improvements are real, and definitely appreciated.”

But while there were more than a few nice things mentioned, the telling line came with this;

“As disappointed as I am with the overall same-ness when comparing the Pre to the new Pre 2, the real changes were made under the hood.”

The real change is under the hood, aka webOS 2.0. And this is where the Pre 2 is not going to be a good item for Verizon. I would venture to say that many of the Palm users on Verizon are satisfied with the Pre Plus and will likely hold on to the Pre Plus and wait for the webOS 2.0 update which will arrive for free as opposed to shell out more money and get the Pre 2.

Either way, the Pre 2 is currently rumored for release with Verizon on November 11th. In the meantime, check out the video below and hit the ‘via’ link to check out some hands-on images.

Verizon discontinues Palm Pre Plus sales

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Verizon Verizon Wireless has discontinued all sales of the Palm Pre Plus and some are speculating that this means they are getting ready to release the Palm Pre 2. The webOS 2.0 based smartphone will feature a slide-out QWERTY keyboard and a 3.1-inch multitouch display. It’s scheduled for release sometime next month, just in time for the holiday shopping season. HP, who bought Palm earlier this year, is hoping to make the phone and it’s OS a serious contender alongside Android, Apple, and RIM.

Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1010, aka the Wi-Fi only Galaxy Tab makes the required FCC appearence

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

Samsung Galaxy Tab GT-P1010, aka the Wi-Fi only Galaxy Tab makes the required FCC appearance

We have already seen that Best Buy will be selling a Wi-Fi only model of the Samsung Galaxy Tab tablet. And given that, this FCC listing just means that availability is one step closer to reality. Bottom line here, the Wi-Fi only Galaxy Tab has crossed paths with the FCC and is sporting the model number of GT-P1010. Otherwise, with the exception of the 3G module the specs are going to remain the same. Well, the same with one uncertainty, some have been speculating that the Wi-Fi only Galaxy Tab will also lack the GPS receiver. Not the best news, but considering the same rule applies to the Apple iPad it would not be all that surprising.

Motorola Droid 2 discontinued with Best Buy

It appears as if the Droid 2 to Droid 2 Global switch is now upon us. Or at least upon us in terms of Best Buy. The most recent information coming from the big-box retailer is that the Droid 2 has been discontinued and is on the way out. Of course, with the Droid 2 Global expected to arrive on November 11th, this discontinue notice seems nothing other than expected.
