The USB device is compatible with Windows Vista, XP, 7, MAC OS 10.5, and 10.6. Unfortunately, the Sprint U1901 does not access 3G speeds, meaning you have to be in a 4G hotspot area or the device will not work at all. Since Sprint has yet to bring 4G speeds to every major city in America, I imagine only people living in a 4G capable city would purchase the U1901. Sprint claims it can access top speeds of 10 Mbps, but usually averages somewhere between 3 and 6 Mbps. Unfortunately, no word on exact availability or pricing at the moment. Its first Android smartphone is the Samsung Acclaim, so now customers will have the option of choosing between the Acclaim and the Desire. In terms of specs, the HTC Desire features a 3.7 inch touch screen, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5MP camera, integrated GPS, WiFi, and operates on Android 2.1. U.S. Cellular will pre-load the HTC Desire with a few of its own apps such as: My Contacts Backup, City ID, Tone Room Deluxe and Your Navigator Deluxe. Unfortunately, most users will find these pre-loaded apps unnecessary, but the reality is a lot of cell phone carriers are starting to do that. No word on pricing at the moment, but I’m sure we’ll find out that piece of information as we get closer to the launch. U.S. Cellular plans to launch a few more Android phones before the year is out, including the Samsung Galaxy S (making it the fifth U.S. carrier) in October, and then two more LG Android smartphones later on. According to a “reliable source,” Phandroid is reporting T-Mobile will launch the myTouch 3G HD and the G1 Blaze sometime towards the end of September. The myTouch 3G HD is also known as HTC Desire HD and the T-Mobile G1 Blaze is known as the HTC Vision. Both of these unknown smartphones have been rumored to launch on T-Mobile at some point in the future, so a launch under the Project Emerald promotion makes sense. During T-Mobile’s “secret launch,” one device will launch September 22 while the other smartphone will launch a week later on September 29. Phandroid admits this is a “big rumor” but claims their tipster “has been dead-on in the past.” I would take this rumor with a grain of salt, but it’s definitely a possibility that T-Mobile will launch these phones in September. Expect more leaks and rumors to ensue in the coming days and weeks. The unit is locked-down to accept only specific mac addresses and this prevents users from using the iSpot to laptops (even Macs *gasp*) and other non-Apple gear. The trade off is a paltry $25 per month charge for service aimed to compete with AT&Ts plan and 3G built-in radio. But now, some users have figured out how to root the device and get around the security. I used this quote in the announcement, “"With the iSpot, Apple customers don't have to sort through confusing service plans with overage fees, nor do they have to worry about how much data they're using," said Thomas Enraght-Moony, senior vice president of marketing at Clearwire. "Instead, with CLEAR, customers can run all of their Apple mobile devices at true broadband speeds for a single, simple monthly fee." And then promptly made fun of it in my Who’s on Crack in Tech column, “Unfortunately, it seems ridiculous to me. Here's superfast (let's just say it is, OK?) WiFi but you can't have it on your laptop. I can't think of a better reason to hack this thing or jailbreak the iPad to spread some 4G love around. Crippling the device to minimize your risk seems childish and short-sighted. Bunch of crack heads.” This disclaimer sits above the instructions on how to open the iSpot up: “Disclaimer: Whenever you "jailbreak" a device like this you risk bricking it and getting into some trouble. Be nice and be fair! Do this to learn, gain access on devices that aren't working correctly (which a lot of people are running into right now), extend the capabilities by installing extra software, etc.” Fair enough. The instructions provided allow users to root the device, remove the mac address restriction and then prevent OTA software pushes that will likely come to squash the rebellion, er, stop the work around. There are two bundle deals listed and you will either spend $9.99 or $14.98. Both prices will get you a Touchstone Charger and a Vehicle Power Charger. And the higher priced option will also include a Case. In order to get this pricing, just click here and then make sure the “Shop by Phone” phone is the Pre Plus (or Pixi Plus) and then click the link for “Browse Bundles” under the “More Accessories” section. Once there you should see the packages pictured in the image above. In short, if you have been holding out for a Touchstone, the price may not get any lower than $10 so now may be a good time to buy. That said, I should point out that this bundle does not include the USB cable that goes from the wall to the Touchstone, which means you will need the one that came in the box with your phone. Still, a good deal. As of July 29th, according to the Microsoft Online Services team blog, users of 4.0 will not be able to receive new mail or sync calander items. In short, users must update or be cut off. To deliver the best possible service experience, Microsoft Online Services is requiring users with devices running iOS 4.0.0 to update their devices to iOS 4.0.1 by July 29, 2010. An untrumpeted change in iOS 4.0.1 is a fix for Exchange. Under 4.0, many users found the service sluggish if not impossible to use while servers might have been bogged down as well. The fix, pushes the sync timeout to 240 seconds. From Apple support, “The above configuration profile sets the iOS 4 sync timeout value to 240 seconds. This is now the default in iOS 4.0.1.” We’re blocking for you “Only iPhone devices runnning iOS 4.0.0 will be blocked; and the reason for the block is user experience. As we talked about in the blog posts, iOS 4.0.0 has problems with the way Apple implemented Exchange ActiveSync, causing users difficulty synchronizing messages, contacts, and calendar items.. Those problems have been fixed in iOS 4.0.1. The iOS update is an easy install via iTunes.” - from a comment response on the team blog. Difficulty is a long way from blocked access. This seems a harsh remedy for merely difficulty or sluggish performance. Throw in a admin who didn’t get the memo and you’ve got users who’s mail and calender just didn’t stop working - they’re being blocked. Thanks a lot. Of course, we did know it was coming sometime this week. That said, at least this way, the original Droid owners will not feel quite as jealous of their Droid 2 carrying friends who will be sporting Android 2.2 out of the box. So go, what are you still doing here, go and get Froyo while it is still hot. Or at the very least check to see if the update is ready for you. The Galaxy S smartphones in the United States and abroad are good competition to Apple’s iPhone, so it’s not surprising to see Samsung counter Apple’s iPad with a Galaxy S tablet. A “high ranking official” revealed to JoongAng Daily that Samsung would unveil the Samsung Galaxy Tab at IFA 2010, which takes place in Berlin starting September 3. Unfortunately, details on the Android tablet have been rather scant, but if the device is revealed in early September, we’ll probably find out answers to most of our questions. Currently, the Samsung tablet will run Android 2.2, features a 7 inch touch screen, WiFi, GPS, 3G, and dual facing cameras. Honestly there is not all that much that we did not learn in the lead up to the official announcement, but at the same time it is always nice to see the phone in action. Granted it would be nicer to see that action in person, but without making a run to the Verizon store and plunking down $199.99, the video will have to make due. That said, watch above and enjoy the 1 minute and 1 second of Droid 2 goodness. A rumor several weeks ago claimed Verizon had a limited edition R2-D2 Droid 2 device up its sleeve, and now that the rumor panned out it’s time to amass details on the special edition device. Yesterday, Verizon posted a teaser page for the R2-D2 Droid 2 which basically provides details as to why one should wait until September for the special Droid 2 if he/she is a big Star Wars fan. The R2-D2 Droid 2 will come with exclusive video, Jedi training, movie stills, original artwork, empire wallpaper, apps and widgets, and Star Wars Sounds. We still have yet to see an official image of the R2-D2 Droid 2, but Verizon has already got me pretty excited for September. All in all, this tablet sized-phone comes with features to include a 5 inch WVGA display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 3G, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Android 1.6. When Plastic Logic canceled all Que ProReader pre-orders, and delayed the device indefinitely, it seemed as if it wouldn’t be the last bit of bad news we’d hear from the company. At the time, it only seemed inevitable that the Que would, in fact, never see the light of day. Now it seems as if that day has finally come. Plastic Logic has finally announced that it is killing off the Que ProReader as we know it. The device we got a chance to see at CES won’t be released at all. However, Plastic Logic is calling that Que the first-generation of it’s product, and that it will start working on the second generation of the hardware to bring to market. The reason given is that the “market has dramatically changed,” which means the Que no longer makes sense to Plastic Logic. Of course, the implication is that Plastic Logic believes the Que can’t compete with the iPad, or event he cheaper e-book readers. It is sad to see the Que go out this way, but honestly it probably wouldn’t stand much of chance even it it did come out. The iPad, and the impending tablets we keep hearing about means the Plastic Logic would have to convince users that it’s expensive touchscreen e-ink device is comparable. That’s a fight the Que would likely lose. The iPad already has a 3 million unit lead, and it’s doubtful the Que had anywhere near a third of that when it was actually taking pre-orders before the iPad. Thanks for making this official Verizon. But that aside, those who were patiently/not-so-patiently awaiting the arrival—rest assured as the Droid 2 is now available for purchase with Verizon Wireless. And as we mentioned yesterday, the Droid 2 is priced at $199.99 on a two-year agreement. But the good news is you can actually make a purchase, well, that and at least as of now there are not any crazy 3 week shipping timeframes like we have seen with the Droid X and the Droid Incredible. With that, the Motorola Droid 2 features a 3.7 inch (480 x 854) touchscreen display, 8GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 5 megapixel camera and Android 2.2.
