Now that today is August 27, U.S. Cellular has officially began selling the high-end Android device. The HTC Desire is available for all U.S. Cellular customers for $199.95 on a two year contract following a $230 instant discount for the two year contract and an additional $70 MIR. Here’s a quick recap of the Desire’s specs: 3.7 inch touch screen display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5MP camera with flash, 8GB memory included, and runs Android 2.1. In case you are not interested in the HTC Desire, U.S. Cellular also offers the Samsung Acclaim as its only other Android device. The rumor was backed by a leaked internal document as well as update PDF’s on Verizon’s support page. While all things pointed towards a roll out beginning today, August 27, we could not confirm the rumor to be true until now. According to Verizon Support’s Twitter account, they responded to “TheMichaelBK” saying the Froyo update for the Droid Incredible is beginning today. The full tweet can be read below: @TheMichaelBK The Incredible update starts on 8/27/2010. *CH This is good news for everyone who has held off on unofficially updating their Droid Incredible to Froyo. As with any major software OTA roll out, expect it to last a few weeks until every Droid Incredible is equipped with Froyo goodness. The latest status update comes in the form of a 5 minute and 47 second video which shows off the goodies. As to what those goodies include, well in a little bit of a spoiler—incoming and outgoing calls are now possible and the cellular data is on the way. I was able to review the N900 a while back and despite it feeling big and heavy in hand it was a nice phone. Albeit a little more ‘mobile internet device’ like instead of ‘phone like’ but that aside, it would make a nice handset with Android. Sorry Nokia, but I am more of an Android user, but that is not to say I do not like your hardware. Granted, they are not likely to close their doors if it proves to be a failure, but at the same time they appear to need some face-saving after the whole KIN mess. And given that, it looks like Microsoft is prepared to throw around some serious cash in making the Windows Phone 7 launch a success. According to TechCrunch; “The company could spend a half-billion dollars or more in marketing costs and payments to developers and handset manufacturers to subsidize the expense of building phones and apps, so that the Windows Phone 7 ecosystem is well-seeded at launch.” Half a BILLION. Wow. Furthermore, of that half a billion, it is said that $400 million alone will go for marketing. Of course, regardless of what Microsoft is or isn’t doing at this point—things seem to be gaining some stream. Well, at least on the tech side of the internet anyway. As to why I would say that, these handsets that have been leaked and revealed lately have been fairly popular. And after checking them out myself, I would say the popularity is deserved. According to the details given on a Best Buy blog post, Reward Zone members will be able to pre-order the Fascinate on August 27th and everyone else will get their chance two days later on August 29th. “Pre-orders can be made by visiting any local Best Buy or Best Buy Mobile standalone store. Pricing and launch dates for the Samsung Fascinate, which is a member of the Galaxy Series, will be announced soon. “ And just like that and until something better comes up, it looks like the best way to grab the Fascinate early will be to plan on visiting Best Buy on either the 27th or 29th depending on whether or not you are a Reward Zone member. According to Google, that is how many phone calls were made during the first 24 hours of the feature coming available. Interestingly enough, that number was accomplished during a roll-out. Me personally, I did not even have a chance to make a call within that initial 24 hour time period. With numbers like that, it is no wonder why Google was rolling that out as opposed to turning it on in mass. And for those who missed it, check the Chat section in Gmail and you will notice that you can now send (and receive) voice calls which are free (at least till the end of the year) to the US and Canada as well as being very affordable internationally. “Over 1,000,000 calls placed from Gmail in just 24 hours! As a guitarist/bassist myself, I sure as heck could have used an instrument like this during my early stages as a musician. Not only can the Fretlight guitar show you specific scales to play, but it can also map out an entire song for your convenience. The craziest part about this whole thing is the fact that it is actually a guitar and not some cheap piece of plastic that will give you a false sense of musicianship (ehmm, Guitar Hero). Starting at the moderate price of $349.99, these babies will be a surefire way to improve both your knowledge of music theory and ability to kick out the jams. With this new technology, you can even slow down the speed of any given song in order to get a better understand of its framework and hand positions. This is regardless of whether it is a solo from Eddie Van Halen, or a simple song from the White Stripes. Do you think this is a viable alternative to guitar lessons? Will the Fretlight have enough influence to steal sales away from the popular Guitar Hero and Rock Band franchises? Let us know what you think of this magical instrument in the comments section. That said, if this date proves to be true then each of the four major US carriers will have their Galaxy S branded smartphones available for sale. After all the AT&T and T-Mobile version are already available, and Sprint will have the Epic 4G shortly. Interestingly enough, according to the above image it seems Verizon is going to be using the Fascinate as a way to get the remaining KIN phones out of the BEST program. Which may be up to 86% accomplished. Funny, even Verizon wants the KIN gone. Well, needless to say, that turned out to be inaccurate. But the good news follow up to that, it is coming today. Yup, Droid Incredible users should be on the lookout for the frozen yogurt as of today. Of course, just because this is going to begin going out today does not necessarily mean that you will have it today as Verizon rolls these updates out in batches and sometimes takes a week or more. And just in case anyone is still doubting todays arrival, this one has a little more behind it. First, we have (courtesy of Droid-Life) a leaked internal screenshot with the 8/27/2010 date. And second, we also have those update PDF’s that Verizon posted on their support page. Of which, all three docs can be seen in the gallery below. That said, we can only hope that you Incredible users enjoy Froyo. Via [Droid-Life] Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » More Recent Articles |
