We all know Google has a way of rolling out features to some users before others. Usually these features are announced by Google before we start to see them, not so with what could be the biggest improvement to the search engine. It’s not like the new design or the improved algorithm, but could be just as important. The feature was discovered by Rob Ousbey, who posted a video of it to his blog.
The new feature is live updating for searching. The video shows Ousbey seeing his search results populate while he types his phrase. It seems to be working on the first listed suggestion, and changes when Ousbey types something unexpected by Google. Goolge has since confirmed that the video is true, and it is in fact a feature that Google is testing. Of course, testing doesn’t mean that the feature will be brought to everyone, it could fall to the wayside once Google is done testing. When TechCrunch asked a Google spokesperson about the feature, they were told that Google regularly tests 50-200 features at any given time.
It would make sense that live updating would slow depending on your computer, bandwidth or web browser. It would be nice to have live updates no matter what the overall speed. Although, in a way it seems like something most of use wouldn’t see very often, unless it was added to Gmail. How many people routinely search and don’t use the search box in their browser? Sure, there are those who still don’t know what a search box is, and this feature might be helpful for them. For most of us, however, it’ll likely be a cool feature to try and then not use very often. That is, of course, assuming Google implements the feature for everyone.
