Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile The HTC Glacier has been floating around the blogosphere mainly in rumor posts. But now we have a little more information regarding HTC’s new monster. As you can see from the image above, the Glacier has been benchmarked and absolutely blown away other phones. Both the Evo and Vibrant were running processors clocked at 1 GHz and the iPhone running the ARM A4 clocked at 800 MHz. But despite those impressive specs, the Glacier managed to leave them in the dust in GLBenchmark Pro, a CPU benchmark. This particularly interesting because we might be seeing the first phone to break the 1 GHz mark and hit clock speeds of at least 1.2 GHz or even 1.5 GHz or even see that rumored dual-core Snapdragon processor. But of course this is all speculation. And if you are to believe this source, you might also be interested in the fact that he claims to work for T-Mobile, clearly showing its intended carrier. Capable of bringing blazing 4G speeds, the iSpot is similar in design to the popular MiFi. Clearwire is tilting their marketing to woo Apple customers. "With the iSpot, Apple customers don't have to sort through confusing service plans with overage fees, nor do they have to worry about how much data they're using," said Thomas Enraght-Moony, senior vice president of marketing at Clearwire. "Instead, with CLEAR, customers can run all of their Apple mobile devices at true broadband speeds for a single, simple monthly fee." It would seem there is more than just the “white casing ...specifically designed to complement the iconic image of Apple products.” While the iSpot is capable of connecting 8 devices at once, all 8 must be Apple mobile products: iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. No laptops?? “iSpot was built and optimized by CLEAR for Apple mobile devices (although Apple isn't likely to tell you that) . If you want to experience the same kind of tummy-twisting speed on your laptops, cameras or other smartphones, there are some sweet Spot products that will make you very happy.” What is interesting is users can pick up the iSpot for $99 and no monthly contract. Monthly service is $25 (labelled as an introductory price - warning). Users also have the option for pay $4.99 per month for 2 years. However, today (and only today says the press release), the iSpot is just $29.99 if users sign a 2-year contract for service. Locking this thing to Apple products only seems arbitrary. If I am going to be forced to carry around another thing, I’d expect it to be flexible enough to cover my laptop. This just rubs me the wrong way, how about you? It would also seem this is 4G only. No 3G back up. With 4G’s limited coverage, the iSpot’s target market is narrow, narrow indeed. Saudi Arabia has banned the BlackBerry. Well, more specifically, they have banned some of the services and not the phones themselves. Nonetheless, they are taking part of what makes the BlackBerry the BlackBerry—the data services. And unfortunately, Saudi Arabia is not wasting any time as the ban will go into effect as of this Friday. And those in the United Arab Emirates, you have a little longer to enjoy the BlackBerry, your loss is scheduled to arrive sometime in October. If so, you may want to check the Market because the Facebook app has recently been updated. And finally, this is a welcomed and much improved update over past versions. Some of the new support comes in the form of being able to access friend requests as well as video playback and Events—all of which could not be done before. Plus, Android users now have something over iPhone users—a new feature on the homescreen. The Facebook app on Android is now sporting a bottom row that has thumbnail images of recently shared items from your friends streams. An updated homescreen with: - The ability to post a status update or search for friends with just one click
- A new photo reel that enables easy viewing of photos and videos from friends in your News Feed
- A draggable Notifications drawer where you can easily see if a friend posted a note on your wall, commented or liked a post or tagged you in a photo
- Video playback from the app. Similar to the Facebook for iPhone application, we are using the H.264 baseline profile for encoding videos
- Support for Events. You can now review your upcoming events, read your event details, and even RSVP – all from the application

And as a Palm fan (and user) I say that with a little sadness. But I still like to believe there is some hope of another turn around. That said, we do have some rumors floating around that a new Palm device may be coming to Sprint later this year. According to the details, the webOS device, which is still sporting the codename of C40, will be heading to Sprint as part of their fall device lineup. Unfortunately, aside from rumor there is not much to this one just yet. Otherwise, the Palm C40 is expected to feature a 4 inch touchscreen LCD, 8 megapixel camera with 720p video recording, webOS 2.0 and a larger and more useful gesture area as compared to that of the current Pre and Pixi. All said and done, sounds good. But I would have to question if this is heading to Sprint. If nothing else, lets not see them make the same mistake with a long Sprint exclusive like they did with the original Pre. And yes, these specs do seem to be changing. These latest differ from that of this C40 mockup. But hey, its all rumor at this point and things are bound to change. And these latest make me want one even more. According to the latest details, which are coming by way of The Financial Times; “Motorola is developing a digital tablet device that will allow users to watch television on it,” And while that alone is fairly intriguing. But lets add a little more. That tablet is expected to feature a 10-inch display, be running Android 3.0 and heading to Verizon. Of course the connection here, television and Verizon and that could mean FiOS. So, who wants a 10-inch Android tablet from Motorola that is on Verizon and has support for FiOS television? Other details of the tablet include support for Adobe Flash and dual cameras. And while this may sound a little out there, we have to remember, Motorola makes the set-top boxes that Verizon currently offers out to FiOS customers. With that, nothing is expected to happen until sometime in the fall. But it does sound like something worth looking forward to. Well, truth be told I am pretty into the Droid 2 about now, but at the same time this phone is about the worst kept secret. After all, we have seen plenty in terms of leaks, rumors and images up until this point. Nonetheless, we now have two more images of the yet-to-be-announced Motorola Droid 2. Now lets hope that August 12th release date is accurate. And in the meantime we can sit and stare at these latest two images. That said, they are nice images and the bottom one especially given the nice side-by-side compare to the original Droid. And while it will certainly not mean the death of paper books, it will be telling of the future. Maybe Amazon can make the purchase and then replace those new Nook kiosks with Kindle kiosks. In the end though, I cannot really see Barnes & Noble going away. Not in terms of name at least. But then again, what would happen to those nook owners if it does? Nice nook, no ebook store. But again, I do not really see that happening. Sounds like good news, assuming it is true. Of course at this point that date should still be considered nothing more than rumor. Otherwise, in addition to a release on the 12th, it is being said that Verizon will make the official announcement on August 10th with a one-day pre-sale to take place on the 11th. Bottom line, if all goes according to rumor you will be able to order your Droid 2 on August 11th and get it on the 12th. Fingers crossed.
