Leaked HTC Desire HD

The HTC Desire HD, which is also called the HTC Ace, was first leaked back in mid-July.  At the time, we did not have any images to go along with the rumor, which was a bummer because it’s always fun to see teaser images.  Today, an image has surfaced in a Chinese forum which the user claims to be the HTC Desire HD.  Without any official confirmation from HTC that such a phone exists, we can’t confirm with certainty that the phone depicted above is the Desire HD, but it’s certainly plausible.

The HTC Desire HD features a 4.3 inch screen similar to the HTC EVO 4G, but there doesn’t seem to be a front facing camera on the former device.  However, the picture above does confirm that it’s running Android 2.2, indicating that it will probably launch with Froyo out-of-the-box.  Hopefully we’ll hear some more information in terms of pricing and availability in the coming weeks.

New Android world phone on Verizon leaks, expected to launch in 2011

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

New HTC world phone on Verizon

According to a new tip received by AndroidGuys, Verizon might launch a high-end Android smartphone in 2011.  The Android smartphone with HTC branding is designed to be a world phone, meaning it features a SIM card so it can be used as a CDMA phone or GSM phone.

In terms of specs, the HTC/Verizon phone features a 1.2GHz processor, 4 inch screen, slideout QWERTY keyboard, and could launch with Android 2.2 out-of-the-box.  Of course, 2011 is still pretty far off and specs are always subject to change especially when the phone hasn’t even been announced yet.  Either way, it would be nice to see Verizon launch an Android device that can be used internationally.

Remember that $150 Android tablet from Augen, according to Google it is running a pirated version

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers

Well look what we have here, it seems as if that $150 Android tablet from Augen that made a splash when it appeared in a Kmart circular is not entirely on the up and up. According to Google, Augen has used a pirated version of Android. What, isn’t Android open source and free for anyone and everyone to use? Well, sort of. The operating system itself is open source, however there are some goodies included by Google that are not. Namely the real goodies such as the access to the Android Market. According to Google;

“Augen included proprietary Google software in their product via an unauthorized vendor. Google only licenses its software to partners and OHA [Open Handset Alliance] members directly”

I guess Augen has some explaining to do. In the meantime, the Augen78 Android tablet is not likely to be available at your local Kmart in the meantime.

Motorola Milestone XT720 comes available with Cincinnati Bell

The Motorola Milestone XT720 has just come available with a regional US carrier—Cincinnati Bell. Certainly good news for those customers who may be looking for something Android flavored. This release also gives hope that the Milestone XT720 could possibly come available with others here in the US market. Otherwise, the Milestone XT720 features a 3.7 inch FWVGA (854 x 480) touchscreen display, 720MHz TI OMAP3440 processor, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g, Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, GPS, 8 megapixel camera with Xenon flash and is running Android 2.1. Rockfish Tablet images get tweeted by Best Buy CTO

Rockfish Tablet images get tweeted by Best Buy CTO

It looks like Best Buy CTO Robert Stephens has been checking out a Rocketfish branded tablet. The device was noted as having a front facing camera and running Android 2.2 Froyo. Otherwise, we are left to wonder, and while these images have sent a little shock through the tech blogosphere, it seems he has been tweeting about tablets for a while.

“I’ve been tweeting photos of tablet for months. So much for the realtime web. No one should be surprised.”

That aside though, the Rocketfish tablet in the images is nothing more than a “form factor proto.” In other words, it is not anything to really get jealous of at this point. It also means that we have no hardware specs at this point. But it does give those looking for an Android tablet something to look forward to seeing. Lets hope Best Buy can pull this off.

    Gadgetell Unboxing: Samsung Intercept

    Gadgetell Unboxing Samsung Intercept

The Samsung Intercept is one of Sprint’s latest midrange Android smartphone devices.  While it won’t blow you away with it’s super fast processor, or gargantuan sized screen, the Samsung Intercept does what you would expect from a $99 smartphone.  It handles call, texts, and web efficiently, and the slideout physical keyboard is a nice addition for those who prefer physical to virtual keyboards.  My only complaint with the device thus far is its sometimes sluggish and slow to respond when using many applications.  Just as a reminder, the Samsung Intercept features a 3.2 MP camera, 3.0 touch screen, Android 2.1, Bluetooth connectivity, and the aforementioned physical keyboard.  Expect a full review shortly, but in the meantime, feel free to check out some unboxing pictures.

Blockbuster app for Android now available in the Market

    Images via: AndroidLib

The Blockbuster app for Android has just made its way into the Android Market. Of course, the app has been around for a little while but up until now it was limited to the handsets that it came pre-installed on, such as the Droid X. The app is free to download, but it does integrate with the Blockbuster On Demand service, which means you will need pay the rental or purchase price of the movie you want to check out. So free to download and not so free to use. Otherwise, if you are looking to be able to download and watch movies on your Android smartphone then this seems the app to get at the moment. As for me, I am going to continue to wait for something from Netflix.

Gameloft puts Dungeon Hunter HD & Gangstar: West Coast Hustle HD for iPad on-sale [Weekend Fun]

Weekend Fun Gameloft puts Dungeon Hunter HD and Gangstar West Coast Hustle HD for iPad onsale

Those looking to waste a little time with the iPad this weekend may want to consider downloading one or both of the games that Gameloft has recently put on sale. The titles are Dungeon Hunter HD and Gangstar: West Coast Hustle HD. Both are for the iPad only, and both are priced at $0.99. Not bad considering they were priced at $6.99 and $4.99. Though, it is worth mentioning that these are only on sale for a limited time. Either way though, I can say from experience that Dungeon Hunter HD is a great game and was well worth the purchase price when I bought it at $6.99. That said, I am off to download and begin checking out Gangstar: West Coast Hustle HD.

Asus getting ready to drop an e-book reader under $599

Asus getting ready to drop an e-book reader under $599

Asus will be launching an e-book reader that with an 8-inch 64-greyscale TFT-LCD screen all for under$599 this October. The company has indicated that they are in talks with mobile telecom carriers over bundle sales. The LCD panel has been designed specifically to improve reflection according to Digitimes Research analyst, Mingchi Kuo. Now while the new reader offers a fast response time, it still cannot compare to e-paper in terms of aspect ratio and reflective performance according to Kuo.

Kuo also went on to say that Asus currently has no support for its e-book reader and that its price is a lot higher than the Kindle and its competitors currently in the market. Companies like Asus should be more concerned about making a competitor to the iPad as no one has really stepped their game up. Everyone caught a glimpse of Microsoft Courier right? I can’t imagine that selling a competing tablet device would prove to be much of a challenge as any company (Dell, I’m looking in your direction) could shoddily throw together some sort of a tablet with flash and other basic compatibilities the iPad is missing and market the hell out of it. It might be too early to make a speculation like this, but I feel like there won’t be much of a future left for laptops.
