Section: Communications, Mobile, Web, Websites Designed, apparently, for the segment of the population that doesn’t see gift cards as the “last minute, ah crickey, I forgot” gift, GiftCards.com is using it’s new iPhone app to put users images on Visa gift cards. That’s right, with a little extra planning, users can put their images, straight from their iPhone, onto gift cards of varying amounts. “We are excited about this new feature of our iPhone app. It provides our customers the ability to use their iPhone to snap a picture and then convert that picture into a plastic Visa gift card with value loaded,” stated Jason Wolfe, CEO of GiftCards.com. The company, GiftCards.com has already sold over $140 million in gift cards and operates a discounted merchant card service where the company buys cards with balance and resells them at a discount. The company’s iPhone app does a nice job of turning something rather impresonal, into something entirely personal. Some companies, such as Electrical retailer DSG international plc, owner of Currys and PC World, believe that tablets, like the iPad will outsell netbooks 2:1 this holiday season. Jeremy Fennell, DSGi said: “There is no doubt that the iPad is going to be the number one Christmas gift this year. It has already proved incredibly popular and with even more accessories launching it’s only going to make a must-have technology even more attractive. There will be choice beyond Apple by Christmas but it’s hard to see anyone toppling their dominance in the short term.” Is this a hard prediction to make? Come on guys, Apple still has a delay of 7-10 days for all version for customers that order online. Apple continues to have difficulty satisfying demand. Netbooks have been on the slide for years now, is it any wonder the iPad will generate buyer excitement and send them flying off the shelves this holiday season? I am glad I am not the gal or guy at Apple who has to decide how many of these to send into production to meet holiday demand. The app brings Comcast services with users on the go. According to a blog post by Cathy Avgiris, SVP and General Manager, Communications and Data Services, Android and BlackBerry are on the company’s radar. We hope to make the app work on as many different devices as possible, including Blackberry and Android. I reviewed the 2.0 version of the app 5 months ago and found the app a great tool for Comcast users. From the ability to remotely forward your Comcast Digital Voice line, push notificiations when users have a new voicemail, to checking out what’s new in On Demand, the app has a lot going for it. Previously, Comcast didn’t comment on when we’d see other versions of the app for other devices. While no timeline has been set yet, we’re encouraged Comcast is acknowledging the need for the app on multiple platforms. Comcast sees their app as a shining example of how well the company can transform a home phone/home TV experience. Hopefully, that means the needed resources will be pushed this apps way. Unfortunately for those homeowners, the result could mean a $75,000 fine. Wow, lots of money for the lack of proper paperwork. But that seems to be what officials from Riverhead, Long Island are doing. According to the details, they are snooping into backyards by way of Google Earth. The result, a reported 250 unpermitted pools thus far. Lets just hope that those unpermitted pools are currently owned by the person who originally put them in and not an unsuspecting new home owner. In the end, just another way you can be caught by Google. The reasoning behind can vary, some prefer the images not to load due to speed issues. Obviously it is faster without the images having to load. But others feel it can be a security issue. And one of those who side on the security issue appears to be Microsoft. And for those who have used a Windows Mobile device in the past will remember, for good or bad—images do not automatically load in HTML email. Well, it seems that the same thing is going to carry on over to Windows Phone 7. According to Mobility Digest; “Well with the mobile world trotting forward and both Apple and Google automatically downloading (and loading) html with embedded images that should guarantee that Windows Phone 7 will automatically load embedded html emails, right? Yeah…fail. Take a look at that images that Herm (hermssoftware.com) snapped on his dev device.” Hopefully this can be corrected by a simple setting. Otherwise, there are going to be some boring looking emails. Plus, with a device that is expected to be popular and hopefully in the hands of many—its likely that some people will simply think that their email is broken. But with the complex and risky means of doing so definitely makes the concept of rooting unattractive. Well now me and everyone else who has been hesitant to root their phones may rejoice! There is now an application in the marketplace that now allows one click rooting of any Android phone. Now I know you must be thinking that this application could be phony or cause things to go haywire. But I can say with good faith two of my followers on twitter have confirmed to me that the application does in fact work. Scan the QR code below to download Easy Root for $0.99 in the marketplace. Computer scientists at the University of California, San Diego surpassed the illusive “terabyte barrier” when they sorted a terabyte (which is 1,000 GB) of data in just sixty seconds. UC computer scientists also tied a world record for fastest data sorting rate in which they sorted one trillion data records in 172 minutes all the while using only a a fourth of the computing power of the other record holder. I’m starting to get envious of these nerds as large file transfers on my computer can sometimes last upwards of forty-five minutes. Now if you’re a big time company looking to take your web presence even more prevalent, you might want to keep an eye out for these new emerging technologies that will allow users to access data more efficiently. "If a major corporation wants to run a query across all of their page views or products sold, that can require a sort across a multi-petabyte dataset and one that is growing by many gigabytes every day," said UC San Diego computer science professor Amin Vahda. "Companies are pushing the limit on how much data they can sort, and how fast. This is data analytics in real time." Although what Vahda and crew are doing over at UC might seem tedious and boring, their innovations are pointing towards the future of computing. It might be a competition for them, but it’s win win for consumers everywhere. The white Samsung Galaxy S has appeared on The Phone House (Spanish website) and is listed as an “exclusivio” and priced at €499. Otherwise, its an unlocked handset and not yet available for purchase. That and, it has such a blurry picture that it is hard to even comment on what it may look like in white. That said, those who may have wanted a Galaxy S in white could be in luck. Both Vista and 7 have 14.4% marketshare with Windows 7 having a couple more copies to edge out the battle. Of course both of these operating systems are dwarfed by their grandfather Windows XP which still owns 62%. There are several reasons why Windows 7 has managed to pull this off. I believe that Vista literally scared off all of the users to the new Windows 7.
