Dell rep says you can download Android 2.1 for the Dell Aero from the Market, and it may be free

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Dell Aero

When Dell announced the Aero for AT&T, one piece of information was missing: what version of Android it would run out of the box.  I noticed a convenient link to chat with a Dell Representative and I decided to inquire about which version of the Android OS it would feature.  With the Dell Streak launching with Android 1.6, I would not have been surprised to find out the Dell Aero would run Android 1.5 or Android 1.6.  The lady at Dell I chatted with was nice enough to look up the information for me and said it would launch with Android 1.5 but would be updated to Android 2.1 if you download it from the Android Market.  Well, you can read the conversation for yourself below.

Time Details
08/24/2010 10:45:21AM System: “Thanks for choosing chat for your Dell Purchase needs. A chat agent will be with you shortly.”
08/24/2010 10:45:40AM Session Started with Agent (E&A_Madelle)
08/24/2010 10:45:44AM Agent (E&A_Madelle): “Welcome to Electronics and Accessories Sales Chat I hope you are doing well and thank you for waiting. My name is Madelle and I will be your Sales Agent today. Dell now offers Payment via Chat for a secure, fast, and more convenient way to order. What can I order for you today?”

Hi there…

Chats do occasionally disconnect due to ISP hiccups. Please provide your phone number so that I can contact you in case we get disconnected.
08/24/2010 10:45:52AM Natesh: “Hi”
08/24/2010 10:46:00AM Natesh: “I noticed Dell recently announced the Dell Aero for AT&T”
08/24/2010 10:46:14AM Natesh: “I was wondering what version of Android it will be running?”
08/24/2010 10:46:47AM Agent (E&A_Madelle): “I’ll be glad to assist you.”
08/24/2010 10:48:23AM Agent (E&A_Madelle): “Can you give me a moment to check on that for you?”
08/24/2010 10:49:49AM Natesh: “Yeah, sure thing”
08/24/2010 10:51:34AM Agent (E&A_Madelle): “Thanks for holding…”
08/24/2010 10:52:17AM Agent (E&A_Madelle): “I checked, it Android 1.5 cupcake, but you can upgrade it to Android 2.1 in the android marketplace.”
08/24/2010 10:54:01AM Agent (E&A_Madelle): “Are you planning to purchase one?]”
08/24/2010 10:54:06AM Natesh: “How can it be upgraded to Android 2.1 in the Market?”
08/24/2010 10:54:26AM Natesh: “Actually I’m a tech blogger so I’m reporting about the Aero”
08/24/2010 10:58:37AM Agent (E&A_Madelle): “you can download that at Android Marketplace, nit sure yet if it free…”
08/24/2010 11:00:55AM Agent (E&A_Madelle): “Pardon me for asking, but are we still connected?”
08/24/2010 11:01:12AM Natesh: “You can download a physical update to Android 2.1 from the Market?”
08/24/2010 11:01:46AM Natesh: “and yes we are, sorry”
08/24/2010 11:03:28AM Agent (E&A_Madelle): “From the Android MArketplace website, you can download an upgrade for it, however, we cannot guarantee if the upgrade is free.”
08/24/2010 11:04:08AM Natesh: “Alright, thanks for the information”
08/24/2010 11:04:20AM Agent (E&A_Madelle): “You are welcome. Would there be anything else I can help you?”
08/24/2010 11:05:32AM Natesh: “Nope, that’s it”

So let me get this straight…if you decide to purchase the Dell Aero, make sure to check the Android Market(place) because apparently you can download and install Android 2.1.

Dell announces the Dell Aero for $99 on a two year contract with AT&T

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Dell Aero

Earlier today, Dell announced the availability of a mid-range Android smartphone on the AT&T network, the Dell Aero.  The Aero features a 3.5 inch touch screen with 640x360 resolution, Gorilla surface glass, 5MP camera, 2GB onboard memory expandable up to 32GB via microSD card, and runs Android 1.5 with many Dell customizations.  The Aero can be yours for $99 on a new two year contract with AT&T, otherwise it is available for $299 without a contract.  Since it only weighs 3.67 ounces, it is being touted as one of the lightest Android smartphones currently available.

Is anyone excited over Dell’s latest offering that runs only Android 1.5?  I guess the silver lining is it’s affordable price tag, but I think less customizations on Dell’s part and a higher version of Android would make the phone more marketable.

MultiFlow brings Expose-like multi-tasking to jailbroken the iPads

Section: Apple, Computers, Mobile Computers

I was always a big supporter of jailbreaking on the iPhone, always had mine jailbroken. But not using the iPhone day to day anymore that scene has kind of passed me by a little bit considering I have thus far resisted the temptation to jailbreak my iPad. Mostly because up until now I have not had a good enough reason to do so. That said, I think my mind may have been changed, at least until Apple rolls out iOS 4 for the iPad anyway. What changed my mind—one word—multifl0w. Of course, that one word is actually the name of an app, and an app that is not Apple approved and not in the official App Store. It is however found in the Cydia and Rock Your Phone app stores though. As to what it does, in short, it brings Expose-like multitasking to the iPad (and iPhone). As for price, expect to pay $4.99, but the good news there is that the multifl0w app will allow you to background up to 9 apps at any time. Best of all, it seems to be nicer than what Apple has offered officially in iOS4.

Germany set to ban employers from searching potential job candidates on Facebook

Germany set to ban employers from searching potential job candidates on Facebook

Each and every one of us have had some embarrassing moments in their life, right? On some of these said moments, friends might have decided to chronicle them with a camera. As embarrassing as these moments might be, they somehow make their way onto our social networking channels representing us to the rest of the digital world. How or why this occurs is beyond me. Maybe some people feel the need to post pictures of their bachelor’s party for everyone on the web to see. Do you think your current employer would rehire you after seeing some of the pictures you have posted on Facebook? You know which ones I’m talking about…

Regardless of our motives, it has become common knowledge that employers will be stalking our Facebook, Myspace or Twitter profiles to get a closer look as to who we really are. The new law, which has been created by Interior Minister Thomas de Maizière, could soon make it illegal for employers to check out potential job candidates on Facebook and other non-career focused social networks. Sounds kinda reasonable to me wouldn’t you agree? What’s weird about this law is the fact that employers will still be allowed to Google job candidates which ultimately defeats the purpose of the law to begin with. In addition, there are security features currently on Facebook that can prevent strangers from searching for your profile. So what it all boils down to is that this law only applies for those of us who are too lazy to beef up our security settings on Facebook. I for one am guilty.

After months of negotiations, the law German cabinet will make their final verdict by Wednesday. Let this be a reminder to all of you job hunters out there to clean up your digital image. No one needs to see how well you can perform a keg stand, seriously.

Evernote app for webOS is "on the back burner"

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Web Apps, Websites

An Evernote app for webOS devices is available, however it is far from perfect. That said, it looks like webOS users waiting for an update are going to be waiting for a long time. The news comes by way of Dave Engberg from Evernote and is disappointing, but not all that surprising given the current state of webOS. Bottom line, it does not look like anything is going to be changing in regards to the Evernote app for webOS, which is disappointing because it seems most users are complaining about bugs and not necessarily looking for new features. Though, those would also be nice.

“We’d love to see the WebOS platform succeed at HP, but our resources are limited, so the WebOS client is currently on the “back burner” while we wait to see what happens with the platform.

Thanks

- Dave Engberg (Evernote)”

English woman breaks texting record using Galaxy S with Swype

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile, Gadgets / Other

Samsung Galaxy S

There are many people who are still skeptical about Swype and its ability to improve your texting speed, but it’s important to note the last two texting records are held by individuals who used a device running Swype.  Melissa Thompson, 27, of Salford, Greater Manchester wrote the passage below in an astonishing 25.94 seconds.  In fact, the same passage which set the texting record back in March had a time of 35.54, meaning Thompson completed the text 9.6 seconds quicker.

Interestingly, Thompson used a Samsung Galaxy S smartphone pre-loaded with Swype in order to perform the feat and the person who last held the record also used a Samsung phone.  Perhaps Samsung creates phones conducive to quicker messaging, but more importantly, Swype is definitely the way to go if you want to achieve faster messaging speeds.  For now, Swype is still in closed beta but it is being pre-loaded on new smartphones such as the Motorola Droid 2, Motorola Droid X, and all the Galaxy S variants in the United States.

Here is the passage in case you think you can go even faster:

The razor-toothed piranhas of the genera Serrasalmus and Pygocentrus are the most ferocious freshwater fish in the world. In reality they seldom attack a human.

LG GW910 spotted with the FCC, comes touting AT&T network support & Windows Phone 7

It looks like we have another smartphone getting revealed by way of an FCC listing, the latest device is the LG GW910 and it is running Windows Phone 7. Well, more specifically it is believed to be a Windows Phone 7 phone given the button configuration, which clearly has the Windows button nice and centered along the bottom. Otherwise, the slider looks decent enough, a 4 row job, but just how decent will need to be left to an actual hands on. In terms of other specs, the FCC filing was pretty light however there are some other rumors. Those rumored specs include a capacitive touchscreen display, 1GHz Snapdragon processor, 5 megapixel camera and 8GB of internal storage. In addition there will likely also be the items that are becoming smartphone standards which include Wi-Fi and GPS. The only other bit confirmed by way of the FCC listing was network support for AT&T 3G bands.

Samsung Galaxy Tab: More leaks, this time showing Android 2.2

Samsung Galaxy Tab: More leaks, this time showing Android 2.2

Yesterday we saw the Samsung Tab make an appearance in Australia and today we have some more images. Granted these may not be as exciting as a video post, however they are fairly clear images and that should count for something. As far as these latest, they do confirm that the tablet is running Android 2.2 and sporting a 7 inch display with a 1024 x 600 pixel resolution. Otherwise we can tell you that the Samsung Tab is sporting built-in 3G (at least as an option) as well as a 3.2 megapixel camera. Additional specs that are believed to be true but not yet confirmed include Wi-Fi- 802.11 b/g/n, GPS and a front facing camera. Interestingly enough, this latest round of images is showing the Tab with a very Apple-like charging cable, which given it is not a standard microUSB is more than a little disappointing. That said, the Samsung Tab still looks like an interesting device.
