Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking A new Facebook clickjacking scam has an ugly twist-it takes your money. The scam looks like most other clickingjacking scams-a link in a friend’s newsfeed invite you to click a link to see a funny video, article, or slideshow. However, when you click on it you’re prompted to go through a fake “verification” system and on the final screen a next button appears. However it’s not what it appears to be. It’s actually a hidden share button and will post the same link you clicked on to get there to your newsfeed. It gets worse though. You’re then taken to a survey site and the survey asks for your phone number. Provide it and you’ll find an extra $5 a week tacked on to your cellphone bill for a phony premium service called “The Awesome Test”. Facebook has shut down the page behind the scam but if you’ve taken any surveys that asked for your cell number check your bill carefully and contact your provider right away if you are charged! Verizon Wireless offers unlimited talk, text, web for $119 in most markets except for Los Angeles and San Diego where Big Red is testing a cheaper, unlimited plan according to Current Analysis. Currently in L.A. and San Diego, Verizon’s testing a plan including unlimited talk and text for $69.99; when you add unlimited data to the mix, the unlimited everything plan becomes $99.99—identical to Sprint’s offering. Sprint is the third top carrier in the United States, behind AT&T and Verizon, but recently Sprint has improved in terms of gaining new customers. We’re not sure whether Verizon’s testing such a plan to compete with its CDMA rival or simply for its own purposes. Moreover, it is not guaranteed Verizon will implement this new contract pricing outside as it is being touted as a limited time promotion in these two markets. A file could be attached to an email, pasted in an email body, or saved in Google Docs. Sure, you could go to each respective service to find the document. Google has now added a better way of finding those files. Today Google has released a Labs feature called “Apps Search” that would allow users to search both Gmail and Google Docs from within Gmail. The feature will also search for files withint Sites. To make searching for files even easier, the Labs feature also includes “Did you mean?” style suggestions. It should make finding whatever you’re searching for much easier. Google does warn, however, that the search may not be as fast as you’d normally expect. The feature is still new (hence being put into Labs), so there’s more work to be done, but it should still be faster than trying to find something between Gmails, Docs and Sites. It’s surprising that it’s taken someone at Google to think of implementing this sort of search. It seems like it would be an obvious feature to add. Now, if only we could search through the Gmail inboxes of all our signed-in accounts. That would be an even better feature. This one takes advantage of the widespread desire of users to have a “dislike” button in addition to the ubiquitous like button that’s become somewhat of a signature for the site. It appears in a user’s newsfeed and informs them Facebook has finally introduced a dislike button and they should click on the included link and download it too. What it really does it let the scammers behind it post spam on the walls of everyone on your friends list. It also asks you take a survey, something that generates income for the scammers, and finally points you to a third party Firefox add-on that acts like a dislike button. Ever since Facebook decided to open up their like button feature and let anyone and everyone use it, these types of scams have been flooding the site. They do shut down every one they become aware of but if they didn’t steadfastly refuse to vet developers and site owners before letting them unleash apps or use the like functionality, they wouldn’t be such a scammers playground. In fact, it looks like Google will launch its own tablet to rival the iPad by Black Friday of this year and it will operate on Chrome OS. The fact that it runs Chrome OS implies it will be used as a browser only device, but hey, that’s exactly what some people would find perfect. The interesting prospect about the tablet is its pricing, which DownloadSquad’s source seems to think might be available for free with a contract on Verizon. With tablet’s costing money up front and then requiring a contract, it would be interesting to see how the Chrome OS tablet fares as a free device. In addition, the device is going to be built by HTC and will feature 2GB of RAM, 32GB of onboard memory, WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS, webcam, 3G connectivity, NVidia Tegra 2 processor, and a display with a resolution of 1280x720. As of now, the rumored release date is November 26, 2010, which is widely recognized as Black Friday here in the United States. It will be interesting to see what kind of rumors and leaks surface between now and then, because we are still waiting on a blurry or official image to go along with the tablet. Today, T-Mobile updated it’s teaser page so we now know the first HSPA+ device will be the T-Mobile G2, manufactured by HTC. The G2 is another Android smartphone, but we still do not know any specs, pricing, or exact availability. On the teaser page T-Mobile claims the device will be available exclusively to T-Mobile customers in the coming weeks. By operating on T-Mobile’s HSPA+ network, G2 users can expect much higher download and upload speeds as compared to 3G speeds. If you want more information on the device as T-Mobile makes it available, feel free to drop your name and email address on the teaser page. As of now it looks like making a deal with Netflix is not something that is on the radar with HBO, that is according to HBO co-president Eric Kessler who was recently quoted as saying that “there is value in exclusivity” and how people “are willing to pay a premium for high quality, exclusive content.” Needless to say that makes it look like HBO is not going to be offering any of their content and losing that exclusivity. There is a bit of good news for Apple users though, in specific, iPad users. In this case you may be watching HBO content on your device within six months time. The current plan is calling for a service called HBO Go, where subscribers will get free access on mobile devices including the iPad. So far we are still awaiting more details on the HBO Go service, but it was noted that it will be offering up to 800 hours of content including movies and television shows. Personally I would still prefer the Netflix option, but then again, I still find my ways to watch those HBO television series without becoming a regular subscriber. And no, my method does not involve Bittorrent. And for anyone familiar with the version number of Ubuntu, that 10.10 translates into October 2010. But that aside, it looks like the support will be focused on the netbook optimized version called Unity and in time be rolled out to include support any number of devices connected devices. That said, it was also said that the initial support would be limited and future support would be in the hands of third party programmers. Of course, why would Samsung be showing off a render at an official announcement. Yup, Samsung officially unveiled the Galaxy S M110S in Snow White—notice the snow flakes in the above image - catchy huh. Otherwise, not much else to get excited about just yet. Well, that is unless you are looking for a white Galaxy S and happen to live in South Korea because as of now that is where it is available by way of SKT. Interestingly enough, Samsung left the silver bezel on the front instead of bringing the white trim all the way. Naturally, the $99 includes a two year agreement with T-Mobile, but it’s still a solid deal. Not to rain on T-Mobile’s parade, however, it is worth noting Amazon and Wirefly are currently selling the Samsung Vibrant for $99.99 on an everyday basis with a new T-Mobile contract. Maybe for today it’s worth ordering with T-Mobile in order to purchase the Samsung Vibrant, but remember there are usually third party retailers who offer discounted pricing all the time. And to further add to that little point, it is not smart to hold up a fellow employee when committing a crime. And to take that a little further yet, it is even less smart to hold up a fellow employee and let them not only see the car but also your license plate. Just like that you may think that no one could be that stupid, but it seems that is the case of what happened with a few FedEx employees. According to the details of the crime, a FedEx delivery driver was held up by four masked men while making a delivery. The four men are said to have taken 10 boxes, and at least some of which were Apple related boxes. Fortunately the delivery driver managed to get a description of the car and the license plate, and while two of the four are said to have been arrested, one of them was arrested in the described car while being dropped off at work—at FedEx. The loot and the tech angle—Apple. Needless to say, you should not hold up anyone, but I think that goes even more so for fellow employees. And just as the name implies, this portable media player has both a 2.8 inch display and Android. Similar to most other FCC listings we get a nice image and some basic details. Aside from the display size and Android we also learn that the Archos 28 will have an integrated microphone, 3.5mm headphone jack, USB connectivity, Wi-Fi and a touch-sensitive front panel with the standard music controls. Also included on those front controls looks to be buttons for search and menu. And just like that we are again waiting for more (and official) information to come from Archos. But in the meantime, we are also being told to keep on the lookout for yet another Minidroid device, this one with a 4.3 inch display and carrying the Archos 43 Minidroid name.
