VZ Navigator for Thunderbolt

The elusive HTC Thunderbolt is still no where to be found, but there is mounting evidence that its release could be imminent.  The VZ Navigator for Thunderbolt app is now available in the Android Market, while its smartphone counterpart is still missing.  Verizon may have prematurely launched the GPS navigation app, or it could be a sign that its first LTE smartphone is just around the corner.  In any case, we will have to wait until Verizon Wireless decides to give the official word on the Thunderbolt’s release date, but it looks like it could be any day now.

Verizon Wireless CFO foreshadows move to tiered data

Section: Business News, Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Verizon Wireless Logo

It is no surprise that Verizon Wireless plans to move from unlimited data to the less attractive tiered data options.  Up until now, it wasn’t known for sure when Verizon would likely make this controversial move, but CFO Fran Shammo shed some light on this issue.

In an announcement directed at investors, Shammo said Verizon Wireless is still working out the details for tiered data, such as whether it will be based on speed or consumption, but that a summer announcement is likely to be the case.  Verizon made it a point that the CDMA iPhone 4 would be eligible for unlimited data options, but with the summer season quickly approaching, you might want to be cognizant of the changes that have a strong chance of occurring.

MobileCity offers T-Mobile G-Slate for pre-order with $699.99 price tag

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

LG G-Slate Product Listing

If the Motorola Xoom on Verizon Wireless isn’t your cup of tea, and you’d prefer something different than the Samsung Galaxy Tab, you may want to consider the upcoming LG G-Slate that will launch on T-Mobile later this Spring.  Unfortunately, important details regarding the LG G-Slate such as pricing have been relatively nonexistent, but according to a third party retailer, the G-Slate could retail for as low as $699.

MobileCity isn’t offering any projected shipment date for the G-Slate, but the fact that they’ve already launched a product page is encouraging.  I’d advise you to take the price tag of $699 with a grain of salt until T-Mobile comes out with an official confirmation.

Sony Ericsson Xperia Play spotted on the FCC again with two more bands

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

xperia play hits the fcc again

It’s not very often that a new product which is about to be released to the public goes back to the FCC table for re-scrutiny. But that what just happened to Sony Ericsson’s much awaited gaming smartphone, the Xperia Play. What we learned from the Xperia Play’s new FCC documents is that this handset is now sporting GSM Bands and 900/2100MHz 3G. In case you’re not aware, these are mainly the network bands used in Europe and Asia.

So, what does this mean? Well, as far as our not so bright minds can think of, this just means that Sony Ericsson is prepping up the said Android smartphone for other markets as early as now. If you will recall, the Xperia Play will be initially released through Verizon. But the distribution deal is non-exclusive, meaning Verizon will not be the sole distributor of the handset. The device is also hitting the Canadian market and will be exclusive to Rogers.

Aside from these two new bands, there’s nothing much in the new FCC documents that reveal other new things about the Xperia Play.

Motorola Xoom Wi-Fi Gets a pre-order page from PC World, quickly pulled off

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

motorola xoom

Awhile ago PC World has posted a pre-order page for the Wi-Fi version of the upcoming Motorola XOOM. And guess what? They even had a price tag for the said Android tablet and that something around £449.99. That amount was a bit lesser than how much the 3G Motorola XOOM is being sold in the U.S. which was $799.99. So we hope that you were able to pre-order the device if you so wanted to have first dibs on it when it is released this month.

Now, here’s the sad news - the pre-order button on the page is no longer there. PC World has pulled it off with a short note saying that the Motorola XOOM will be available for pre-order pretty soon. The statement also confirmed that the Wi-Fi version of the Motorola XOOM will be exclusively from PC World. What is not clear though is when the pre-order page will be up again.

Meanwhile T-Mobile Germany is also distributing the Motorola XOOM, this time the 3G model. And the price tag of the XOOM 3G goes around €699.95. That price is 95 Euro above the current market price of the XOOM’s closest rival, the iPad.

So, with all the excitement that is being built-up prior to the official release of the Motorola XOOM, do you think that the iPad rival is finally arriving?

Samsung to complete the Galaxy Tab family during CTIA

Samsung has begun to send out invitations for an upcoming event that will take place during CTIA in Orlando. The CTIA event is scheduled for March 22nd and it seems like Samsung is going to be focusing on the Galaxy Tab family. The invitation asks “what’s your Tab life” and gives the numbers of 78910, which would coincide with a 7 inch, 8.9 inch and 10 inch device. Of course, we have already seen the 7 inch and 10 inch Galaxy Tab so one could be lead to believe that Samsung will be officially announcing the 8.9 inch Galaxy Tab during CTIA.

Verizon sold 1 million iPhone 4's, according to analyst report

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Verizon sold 1 million iPhone 4's, according to analyst report

Verizon has yet to officially announce anything in terms of iPhone 4 sales numbers, however there are now analyst reports suggesting they could have sold more than 1 million. The details are coming based in part from a statement from Dan Mead who stated that 60 percent of the iPhone 4 sales were pre-orders. Taking that and going on another analyst estimate that suggested Verizon had 600,000 pre-orders and well, you can see how they may have reached the 1 million mark. Of course, all of this seems like a little bit of fuzzy math, but sadly at this time that is probably the best that is going to happen because Verizon has already stated that they will not be talking sales figures until April when they report their first quarter earnings. So, until April and the official word arrives—Verizon may (or may not have) sold more than 1 million iPhone 4’s.

Google adds Honeycomb statue to the ever-growing collection of lawn statues

Just in case we needed another thing to tell us that Android 3.0 was official, the crew at Google has added the Honeycomb statue to the lawn on the Google campus. That said, the Honeycomb statue, which represents Android 3.0 joins the previously existing lineup of the Android robot along with Cupcake, Donut, Eclair, Froyo and Gingerbread. And similar to past statue additions, Google has included a nice little video documenting the process.

Eee Pad Memo shows up at CeBIT 2011 with Bluetooth phone in tow

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

eee pad memo

What do we have here? JKKMobile is running some photos of the new Asus Eee Pad Memo being displayed at CeBIT 2011. We may have heard about the Eee Pad Memo before but what makes things even more interesting right now is the fact that the said device is on display with a Bluetooth phone running alongside with it. Said Bluetooth is a pretty simple device with nothing much on its front but some buttons for accepting and ending calls. In fact, it looks more like a bigger iPod Nano. But the call thing is - you can actually use the phone to take calls incoming from the Eee Pad Memo which has your SIM card. Since the Eee Pad Memo measures around 7-inches, it eliminates the ackwardness of holding the device to your ear when answering calls.

Pretty neat right? Although you can do this via a Bluetooth headset alone rather than using another bigger device, you’d be please to know that you won’t actually be paying for the phone separately as it will come with the Eee Pad Memo. Pricing for the 8-16GB Eee Pad Memo will be around 499 euros while the 32-64GB model will have a price tag of 699 Euros.

As a review, the Eee Pad Memo features a 7-inch capacitive touchscreen display, 1.2GHz Qualcomm processor, 5MP camera with Flash LED camera and 1.2MP front-facing camera, and all the standard works of a pretty good tablet device. Plus of course, it will be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb.

So what do you think folks? Sounds like a pretty interesting package from Asus, right?

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

T-Mobile has recently issued an official statement regarding the Danger powered Sidekick, and its one that is sure to anger some of the current users hold-outs—the Danger service (and your Sidekick) will be shutting down as of May 31st. That said, you still have a few months to enjoy your phone, but now may be the time to start thinking about what kind of phone will be able to serve as a replacement. And in the meantime, keep an eye out because T-Mobile has promised to make the transition easy and will be providing offers in a few weeks. In the meantime, continue on to read the full statement as sent by T-Mobile;

After May 31, 2011, the Danger Service (a subsidiary of Microsoft) used by T-Mobile Sidekick customers for data services will no longer be available on Sidekick devices.
T-Mobile will provide offers for our Sidekick customers before May 31, 2011, to help make an easy transition from their existing Sidekick device to a new device. We will have more information to share about these offers with our customers in the weeks ahead.
To ensure the best possible transition for our loyal Sidekick customers, an enhanced Web tool is available on myT-Mobile.com to easily export their personal data, including contacts, photos, calendar, notes, to-do lists, and bookmarks, from the Danger service to a new device, computer, or a designated e-mail account.  An application is also available in the Sidekick Catalog to make it easy to export personal data to the Sidekick's memory card.  Many T-Mobile stores can transfer data from that card to a new T-Mobile device if the customer brings in the memory card and Sidekick.

AT&T to start selling the Kindle 3G on March 6

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Computers, Mobile Computers, Gadgets / Other, ebooks

Kindle 3G AT&T You may take this piece of news as either favorable to AT&T or to Amazon or perhaps to both. It’s all up to you folks, as AT&T just announced that it will start selling the Kindle 3G on its retail stores nationwide starting March 6. In case you’re not aware AT&T has been providing mobile broadband network to Kindle 3G since it was launched. And by making the Kindle 3G available on AT&T stores, you can now have the chance to test drive the Kindle 3G before actually purchasing it. The good thing is that you can immediately activate its 3G connection right on the store.

This is a good thing for Amazon since, it adds up another avenue for prospective users to get their e-reader device. As for AT&T it’s also somehow a good news since they have just added another popular mobile device in their mobile product offerings. Sales wise? I don’t think this would really create a huge impact on both companies. But alliance such as this could be the start of something big later on, right?

In case you’re interest to get the Kindle 3G from AT&T, it will sell for around $190.
