T-Mobile Sidekick 4G will indeed have mobile hotspot

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

Sidekick 4G

Yesterday T-Mobile unveiled it’s next Sidekick from Samsung coming sometime soon. While the phone had some interesting features such as the Cloud Text, there were a few features that weren’t mentioned at all.

Samsung has confirmed that the Sidekick 4G will have mobile hotspot available. It may seem obvious since the feature was built into Froyo, but carriers do have the option to disable it should they wish. If you don’t need the mobile hotspot, tethering will be available as well. The other unannounced features that were confirmed are a bit more obvious. The Sidekick 4G will have support for microSD cards, with a 2GB card packed in with the phone. It will also have WiFi, Bluetooth and GPS.

The Sidekick 4G may not appeal to everyone, and these stats likely won’t push anyone towards getting one. To me, nothing about the phone is more interesting than the Cloud Text feature. Being able to answer messages from a PC instead of having to pull out your phone to answer them is nice. Then again, this is coming from a guy who spends a good chunk of his day writing on a laptop and probably not in the target demographic for the Sidekick 4G.

Samsung Galaxy Player

If you’ve been wondering what happened to the Samsung Galaxy Player which we were able to play around with during CES 201, well here’s the latest news about from Samsung. The Samsung Galaxy Player is finally hitting the U.S. Market and in fact will be available in two models - one with a 4-inch display and the other with 5-inch display.

In addition, the 4-inch Samsung Galaxy Player will also be preloaded with Skype app so that you can instantly use it for VoIP calls over Wi-Fi. And since both media players will be running Android, you can pretty much install other social networking apps and use the devices to access your Facebook, Twitter and other social networking accounts.

Other features of these Samsung Galaxy Players include - virtual 5.1 surround sound, Samsung’s SoundAlive post-processing technology, WVGA LCD, supports various video and audio format including MP3, WMA, AAC, Ogg, Flac, MPEG4, DivX, Xvid, WMV, and H.264. In addition, both media players will support microSD card up to 32GB storage capacity in addition to their on-board 8GB memory.

Unfortunately, while Samsung is all out in announcing about the specs and features of these two Samsung Galaxy Players, they forgot to announce the price and release date yet. Hopefully we’ll learn about these information soon.

Samsung Series 9 13-inch notebook gets priced at $1,649

Section: Computers, Hardware, Laptops

Samsung Series 9

After a few months of waiting we finally have pricing for Samsung’s answer to the MacBook Air. While Samsung wasn’t able to get the ultraportable down to the Air’s price point, there are reasons to want the Series 9 over the MacBook Air.

The Samsung Series 9 will begin selling tomorrow at $1,649 for the 13-inch model. That model includes a Core i5 CPU, 128 GB of SSD storage and 4 GB of RAM. It also has a super bright 400 nit screen. All of that is packed into the tiny 13-inch laptop that weighs just 2.88 pounds, which is just about the same weight as the same size MacBook Air. As you’d expect, the Series 9 runs Windows 7 Home Premium, which Samsung claims will boot up from sleep in 3 seconds.

For the extra money you get a computer with a much faster CPU (the MacBook Air uses the Dore 2 Duo), plus the super bright display and replaceable battery. Both Samsung and Apple claim to get 7 hours of battery from the ultraportables. We know Apple’s estimate is just about right, and Samsung’s might be as well. Even if Samsung is lying, you can still pack in an extra battery whenever you want.

Samsung confirms 11 inch Series 9 notebook, coming in mid-April

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware, Laptops

Samsung Series 9 notebook

Samsung has just announced its new 11-inch Series 9 notebook which shall be available through Best Buy and other retailers and e-tailers starting mid-April. This 11-inch Series 9 notebook will be preloaded with Windows 7 Home Premium and packed with a 64GB HDD. Other specs of the Samsung 11-inch Series 9 notebook include - Intel Core i3 Processor 380UM 1.33 GHz, 2GB of RAM, 11.1-inch HD LED-backlit SuperBright Plus display (1366x768), integrated Intel GMA HD graphics, Lithium Polymer battery with up to 7 hours usage, Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g/n and Wimax. This baby weighs at a mere 2.31 lbs. and could very well suit up against Apple’s 11-inch MacBook Air.

If the 11-inch Series 9 notebook is Samsung’s bet against the 11-inch MBA, well it also has a bet against the new 13-inch MBA. And yes it’s also a Series 9 notebook with almost the same features except for the fact that it weighs heavier at 2.89 lbs., has Intel Core i5 1.4 GHz processor, Windows 7 home Premium or Windows 7 Professional, 4GB of RAM, 128 GB SSD, 13.3-inch HD LED-backlit SuperBrightPlus display, and Intel HD GT Graphics.

The Samsung 13-inch Series 9 laptop will be available at Best Buy and other major US retailers starting March 17 with a suggested retail price is $1,649. Pricing for the 11-inch Series 9 notebook is not yet available.

Images of the Droid 3 surface

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

Leaked Droid 3 image

It seems like it’s been a while since we last heard about a new Droid phone. The last time was when we saw the Droid Bionic at CES. Since then there hasn’t been all that much new in the line. There’s no new announcements today, but we do have images of the upcoming, unannounced Droid 3.

As expected, the Droid 3 looks similar to the Droid 1 and 2, but different enough to be a noticeable difference. Gone are the angular edges of the Droid 2 which have been replaced by rounded corners. It looks like there’s a front facing camera above the screen which should work great with Skype for Android, or any of the other video chat apps. The keyboard now finally has a row of dedicated number keys. While they are smaller than the other keys it’s better than having to hit the alt key and then a letter key to type a number. Below that keyboard is what could be a mini-HDMI cable, but that’s not at all certain.

Those on the forum where the photo was placed say the Droid 3 may not have LTE, which wouldn’t make sense to me. If the Droid Bionic can have LTE, why wouldn’t the Droid 3? Keep in mind that is a rumor, and none of this is even confirmed. Kbman, the user who posted the photos expects a mid-summer release for the Droid 3. That’s not too far away, but hopefully we hear more about this phone before then.

Firefox 4 set for potential final release on March 22

Section: Computers, Software / Applications, Web, Web Browsers

Firefox

Mozilla has been hard at work on the next version of Firefox for some time now. It was pushed back before, and now barring any further delays we’ll see the next version of the browser early next week.

If everything goes according to plan Mozilla will launch the final version of Firefox 4 on March 22. The final version would be like the recently released RC1 version which “received a very warm welcome” according to Damon Sicore of Mozilla. If the company doesn’t decide to push RC1 forward as Firefox 4 final, we’ll see RC 2 soon and another release date. We should be hearing about the decision soon.

In case you’ve forgotten, Firefox 4 brings a new UI to the browser along with significant improvements. Under the hood there’s better HTML5 support, WebGL and hardware acceleration. For users there’s the addition of tabs on the top of the window, app tabs and the excellent Firefox Panorama (first shown off as TabCandy). Not sure if it’s quite enough to convince me to switch from Chrome, but for those who prefer Firefox I’m sure this update can’t come soon enough.

Robot headphone splitter

Section: Audio, Accessories

robot headphone splitter

A collective “awwwww” can be heard for miles away from this adorable little robot headphone splitter.  For just $14, this little robot can live happily chained to say your keys, ready for the chance encounter of someone who wants to listen to your music.  If they are not attracted to you, there’s a better than good chance they’ll be attracted to your little robot friend.

Just be conspicuous about decapitating the robot (they don’t have feelings, right?) when you wish to use as the headphone plug is, well, its neck.  Then, simply find the gumption to insert your headphones into the robot eyes to complete the sharing process.  Sounds a bit gross but it looks functional.  I am sure the robot enjoys all of this.

Gear we use: CR-48

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Laptops, Netbooks, Features

What: Google CR-48 Chromebook
Where: on the go
Why: thin, light, simple
Buy: not so fast

What

When I travel for business, I loathe lugging around my 18lb laptop.  I pull it out at the home office to look busy but the rest of the time, it sits in my wheeled bag.  This past trip, I left the giant laptop and went with the Google CR-48.  Google was kind enough to send me one of these to mess around with and so far, it’s my favorite little machine yet.

The CR-48 runs Chrome OS.  Essentially, the machine supports the Chrome browser and that is about it.  That means any attachment you need to review will have to be downloaded then uploaded into Google Docs if you’d like to have a peek.  It might be a cumbersome path to review docs and spreadsheets, but as long as you don’t need to edit and send out these attachments, life is ok.

Where

When I travel, it quickly becomes a contest of how much I can squeeze into my computer bag.  Traveling light (not checking anything) saves me money and gives me flight flexibility.  Jumping an early flight home is a lot easier without checked luggage.

With the CR-48, I was able to remove the cushioned protector and stuff more files, magazines and the like in the computer compartment of my bag.  I guess that is what happens when you don’t actually pay for the machine, you treat it a bit worse.

Why

The things I love about the CR-48 revolve around simplicity.  Fast boot up means I am only about 4 seconds from getting on the web; suck on that Windows.  This makes it far more likely that I’ll pull it out at the airport, at the hotel (where I am always rushing).

I missed the whole netbook explosion and even giggled when editors and other writers pulled out their mini-laptops that looked painful to work on.  The CR-48 provides a big laptop experience without all that stuff I really don’t need.  And for files I need on my laptop back home, companies like Mozy and SugarSync would be happy to back up your data and provide access from anywhere.

Buy

Should you get one?  Here come the buts: it’s not for sale (yet or maybe ever), it doesn’t do everything - limits like what it can do with attachments was the biggest hindrance I’ve found.  Other than these caveats, I adore my CR-48.  It should be an inexpensive solution for road warriors looking to lighten the load.

Netflix declares war on cable

Section: Video, Content, DVD/DVR/Blu-ray, HDTV

Boom.  In what could be the shot heard round the world for the cable industry, Netflix has fired the first volley: the company will create it’s own content.  The company has secured a 90s British miniserieis (hey it worked for The Office).  The series will feature Kevin Spacey and David Fincher (of The Social Network fame).

Clearly, Netflix can profit more from original content then spending billions to secure the content of other producers.  Recently, Netflix spent a reported $1 billion to secure Paramount, Lionsgate and MGM pictures for five years.  If Netflix finds success, we anticipate more original Netflix shows will follow.

How successful does Netflix have to be to become a legitimate alternative to cable?  The definition of what a content provider should be is in flux.  Some suggest a stable of news programing is a must.  Other suggest access to national networks such as ABC, NBC and FOX.  At the end of the day, the only vote that matters is what consumers are willing to pay for.

Rumor: T-Mobile Jet 2.0 4G USB modem to come available on March 23rd

Assuming this recently leaked image is accurate, then it looks like T-Mobile has plans to release the Jet 2.0 4G USB modem on March 23rd. Of course, this follows the previous leak that said the modem was coming in March. In other words, it sounds more than likely. In terms of the T-Mobile Jet 2.0, this modem will have support for the T-Mobile 4G network and feature a microSD card slot and make use of the T-Mobile WebConnect data plans. With that, if you were in the market for a new USB modem and wanted to go with T-Mobile, now may be a good time to hold off for a few weeks before making a purchase decision.
