Section: Apple, Communications, Mobile We’ve been hearing a few rumors about the iPhone 5 over the past few weeks, most indicating a design similar to the iPhone 4 with some slight, although major improvements. Now we have some “mold engineering images” that put a bit more behind those rumors. The image you see above is the one image that isn’t a pure wireframe. Those you can see at the link below. The images, if true, would prove that the iPhone 5 will in fact have a larger screen and a thinner bezel. It could be the 4-inch screen we’ve been hearing so much about. These images are only mock ups that are supposed to help case manufacturers create cases before Apple announces the iPhone 5 presumably in June. There were some images like this one for the iPad 2 that circulated before that was announced. That makes these images seem like they could be close to the truth. I still don’t fully believe that well see a 4-inch screen on an iPhone since that would cause some fragmentation. I could be wrong, Apple could figure out a way to make it work but for now it just seems a bit off. The update is what the company has been talking about since CES: improved performance, copy/paste functionality, and CDMA support. That update didn’t go exactly as planned, and has been pushed back until later this month. “NoDo” is short for No Donuts, which may or may not be a shot at Google. As mentioned above, it is supposed to bring some performance upgrades, copy/paste and CDMA support. It mean that Sprint and Verizon would be able to finally carry Windows Phone 7 devices like the Sprint Arrive. Sprint has that device slated for March 20, which may certainly falls into the latter half of the month, but I wouldn’t plan on that being the exact date. After the issues that plagued the last update in late February, it’s no surprise that Microsoft is delaying this update. After some units were bricked with the last update, Microsoft would want to make sure there are no problems with this No Donuts update. This was confirmed via a tweet posted by Google’s VP of Product Management, Sundar Pichai saying that shipment of the Cr-48s to chosen users is done. Google is now finalizing the commercial release of the said Chrome Notebook in the coming months. The good news is, the Google Cr-48 Chrome Notebook should be ready for commercial release from the US market this summer. As a reminder, Mr. Pichai said that both Acer and Samsung will be the first manufacturers who will be releasing the Chrome-powered laptops. What is not clear however is whether these notebooks will be available to the international market the soonest time possible as well. If you can recall, this was rumored earlier but when the review units of Cr-48 started coming to selected users, the rumor about its international release simply died down. So until then, the question now is will the Cr-48 get ample interests enough to translate into good sales now that the market seems to be more excited more about tablet devices than notebooks and laptops? Better yet, are planning to get the Cr-48 once it becomes available to the public? This is because after a few hours of opening up online orders of the iPad 2, the Apple Store has changed the shipping date for these online orders to 2-3 weeks from the earlier shipping time of 3-5 days. That is after the shipping date was earlier changed to 5-7 days. So this means that Apple has already surpassed its quota for the first batch of delivery of the iPad 2 purchased online. Judging from the rate that Apple has changed the shipping time, it’s either that Apple has alloted not enough units of iPad 2 for online orders or the demand was really that high. Anyway, if you still have time to visit your nearest Apple Store, Best Buy or WalMart outlets where the iPad 2 will be put out on sale, I suggest you do so now If you want to get the iPad 2 as soon as possible. Getting it from the online Apple Store will simply put you into a lot of stress due to long waiting time. Good luck in getting the iPad 2 today, folks! Trouble is, Flash wasn’t present in the Xoom when it shipped a few weeks ago. That meant that you couldn’t even view the Xoom’s website on the Xoom itself. Well, by this time next week that should be changed. According to Verizon, Adobe Flash 10.2 will be available for Xoom users on March 18. Like Flash on all other Android devices, it will have to be downloaded from the Android Market. The update will actually be available to all Android devices running Froyo and above. Froyo and Gingerbread have had Flash 10.1 for quite some time, so it’s not as big a deal for them, though 10.2 does have the added benefit of reduced CPU usage for all. For the Xoom, Flash 10.2 will actually be a beta, though it’s better than nothing. The Xoom will see hardware acceleration, and deeper integration into the Android browser that Android smartphone users won’t see. So, it’ll run Flash a bit better than smartphones, which should be expected. Now all that’s missing from the Xoom is a decent number of apps. An experience that’s enjoyable and understood by all wouldn’t hurt either. Overall the filing was rather bland in terms of details—no user manual and no juicy images were included. But that aside, on the bright side we now know that the PlayBook will be available with 16GB, 32GB and 64GB storage options. And lastly, this model was the Wi-Fi only version. With this, now would be a good time for RIM to offer something in terms of pricing and a release date. The Kinect’s sales have even topped the likes of Apple’s iPad and iPhone making it one heck of an accessory (considering the fact that each unit sold is adding $200 to the price of an Xbox 360 console already sold). “We can confirm that no other consumer electronics device sold faster within a 60-day time span, an incredible achievement considering the strength of the sector,” said Gaz Davies, editor of Guinness World Records 2011 Gamer’s Edition. It’s good to see that even an accessory can have such an impact on the gaming world. Besides, it’s always fun when you can get the whole family involved in some sort of physical activity (even if it happens to require the use of a television). With all things considered, the Kinect is a strategic counter attack to everything the Wii stands for. Microsoft has essentially added the entire Wii experience to their console by adding a motion sensor device (all the while keeping their robust game library). Now, both casual and serious users can enjoy the various gaming experiences the Xbox has to offer. So how’s about that Playstation Move? As it turns out, iOS 4.3 now requires the user to enter their iTunes account password before making an in-app purchase, which should ultimately help to keep parents from receiving shocking bills from over excited kids. That said, the details of how the in-app password system works has come by way of GigaOm who is reporting that this will work on a 15 minute window system. Basically, once the password is entered once that opens up the window in which the passcode will not be asked for. Personally, as an adult with a younger child it would have been nicer to see this required for each and every in-app purchase, but at the same time I can understand why Apple may be holding back. Plus, with a 15 minute window, that would assume I (as the adult) had approved the app for any purchases.
