Section: Apple, Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Imaging One of my favorite camera app for iPhone and of course one of the most highly rate app by other iPhone users as well, Camera+ has been recently updated together with a price reduction to boot. Camera+ is now only $0.99 and you not only get value for your money but also some great, new features that will even make your photos even more beautiful - and clear. What is being touted by the developer as one of the biggest breakthroughs to happen to image processing in a long time, Clarity has been applied and utilized by Camera+ now. This simply means the the app can now produce even more stunning photos with just a single tap, short of making your iPhone shots - perfect photos. This is because “Clarity” analyzes your photos and make the necessary adjustments to bring out details and add more spice into an otherwise photos taken using the iPhone camera. What’s good about the updated version of the app is the fact that you don’t need to tweak any settings, controls or button. Just update the app on your iPhone, take your shots and let the app does its job - “silently.” Aside from the enhancement to its photo output, Camera+ also brings in new features such as - improved pinhole effect and vintage border, saving multiple photos to your iPhone’s camera roll based on the order they were selected, and several bug fixes. T-Mobile has begun pushing out the “NoDo” update to the 4.3-inch Windows Phone 7 smartphone. News of the update will be pushed to the HD7, though the update isn’t that easy. In order to install the update onto the HD7, the phone has to be connected to a PC with Zune software, or a Mac with Windows Phone 7 Connector for Mac. After that the update is actually fairly similar to updating an iOS device through iTunes. Zune will check for the update, download it and guide you through the install. T-Mobile says that “each part of the update will take approximately 20-50 minutes to complete.” Since this update is in two parts, including both the February and march updates, that means the update could take a total of 40-100 minutes. So, make sure you have the sort of time on your hands before starting the update. Still, afterwards users will be able to use copy and paste which has been sorely lacking on the platform. The updates also packs improved Marketplace search, lower data usage by Yahoo mail and different backgrounds on search while on WiFi. This service lets users upload their existing photos, videos and music to Amazon’s Cloud Drive. New MP3 purchases from Amazon can also sync to the cloud. Once this data is stored on Amazon’s servers, users can access those files from any computer. On the music side of things, the Amazon MP3 app for Android was updated to stream music from the Cloud Drive to any Android device. Amazon may have jumped the gun with this one because it’s not going over well with the music industry. Before the cloud services were announced, CNET reported that Amazon had not secured all the licenses necessary to launch the service without encountering potential legal difficulties. It was also reported that Amazon would launch the service anyway, presumably to beat Google and Apple to the punch. Google is reportedly still working with record companies for the right to store existing music in its cloud-based service supposedly named Google Music. A new story from Reuters says Sony Music was one of the labels that is upset with Amazon’s haste to launch its cloud service. A spokeswoman for Sony named Liz Young said Sony is “ keeping all of our legal options open.” An anonymous executive told Reuters some individuals from the music industry are questioning the legality of the service. “I’ve never seen a company of their size make an announcement, launch a service and simultaneously say they’re trying to get licenses,” the executive said. Users can now buy virtual goods inside Android apps, just like their friends on iOS. Google announced that it would be coming last week to give developers time to prepare, and some of them have. Apps like Tap Tap Revenger and Comics by Comixology which rely on buying goods in the apps are ready on day one. Finally Comixology users on Android can buy comics straight from their phones without having to navigate the website (though they obviously still can). For users, refunds are still possible with In-app Billing, though it is handled through the app and not the Android Market. Everything else should be the same. For developers, Google takes the same 30 percent out of in-app purchases. That’s a good thing, however, because it means that free apps can now rely on in-app purchases to make money. Hooking users on a free app and making them pay for more content should be much easier than convincing them to pay for the experience up-front. Hopefully this will make Android a bit more profitable for developers. The government is developing a new technology that individuals in areas of unrest can use to protect their cause and fellow supporters. This technology is being called the panic button, and it’ll be used as a way to help protesters stay one step ahead of government oppression. Here’s how the panic button will work in theory. When an activist with a soft spot for democracy is in danger of arrest or finds themselves in a compromising situation, they can run the panic button application on their phones. The panic button will cause the phone to delete all of its stored contacts while sending a warning message to other activists. Though it isn’t too clear in the Reuters report, I’m assuming the panic button could also remotely wipe phones in case authorities confiscate it abruptly. The US is developing this technology with a group of unnamed companies. In areas of civil unrest, citizens have been turning to technology to communicate with the outside world. Twitter and Facebook were commonly used by protesters in Egypt back in January. The United States has also provided funds ($50 million since 2008) to develop technology that will help activists circumvent digital blockades set up by opposing governments. As with any new technology, there can (and probably will) be individuals who will work against its true purpose. In the wrong hands, the panic button application could become quite the enemy to democracy. What if instead of wiping data, someone reverse engineered the app to send data to someone else? The US has to keep a close eye on this one. That would put iOS number three by that year. Actually, according to IDC’s numbers iOS is number three at the moment. The numbers above have the top platforms, in order, as: Symbian, Android, iOS, BlackBerry, Windows Phone, and “Others.” Of note is that Windows Phone includes Windows Phone 7 and Windows Mobile which goes back to version 5. By 2015 IDC claims Symbian will move to the bottom with 0.2 percent of the market (behind “Others”) moving Android up to the top, with Windows Phone taking number two. Apparently iOS and BlackBerry will retain their market share with roughly the same numbers. The big reason behind all of this? Nokia’s switch to Windows Phone 7. IDC apparently believes that most everyone who uses Symbian on a Nokia device will follow the company in it’s OS switch. As much as I’d like to believe that, it seems very unlikely. Some users certainly will move to WP7 when the phones become available, and more people might switch from other platforms because of the Nokia hardware. I’d suspect that it would bring more people to Android, iOS, and WebOS as well. Windows Phone might, and should gaining more market share, but going to number two at this point seems unrealistic unless Google and Apple stagnate sometime in the next four years. Of course this is just my speculation, and I am by no means an analyst.
