Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers Last week we had a leaked image that indicated how Xoom users would be able to upgrade to 4G. Today we have the official instructions of what to do to upgrade the device. The instructions from Verizon are actually just steps for preparing your Xoom for the worst before sending it away. The first step is to backup you tablet, which should be standard practice anyway. It should be as simple as just moving all the data from your Xoom to a computer of some sort. The next step it purely optional: encrypt and reset your Xoom. This is simply to prepare for the worst, incase your Xoom gets lost of falls into the wrong hands during the process. Encrypting the device will take some time should you need the precaution. A factory reset shouldn’t take long at all, by comparison, but you lose all your data on the device that you’ll have to restore later. The final step is to put the Xoom in the FedEx package that Verizon and Motorola provide. It will be completely free to users. If previous estimations hold true, you’ll be Xoom-less for about a week during the upgrade. The plan isn’t ideal (ideal would be you don’t have to ship back the Xoom), but it’s better than nothing. At least early adopters will have a chance to upgrade rather than leaving them in the cold. It looks like Apple is trying again, though with the iPad instead of the iPhone. 9to5Mac was sent the image you see above which looks very much like a white “digitizer” for the iPad. Basically it’s a white bezel for the front of the iPad. It comes complete with a hole that looks to fit a front facing camera. It’s in the same position as the light sensor on the first iPad. A black bezel tends to show off the screen a bit better simply because of the contrast. Perhaps Apple has found a way to make a white bezel not impact the perceived image quality. Or maybe someone just decided to put some white paint on a black digitizer. We’ll surely find out on March 2. Hopefully Apple can pull off a white version this time, for the sake of all those who’ve been waiting for a white iPhone 4. The ShopAlerts service is being billed as a “groundbreaking” location-based market service. The service offers AT&T users the ability to get targeted point of sale advertising and special offers by way of their mobile phone. And of course, the location based portion comes into play because these offers are sent to you when you are near a participating store. With that, and while we would expect this list to grow over time, the current partners include HP, Kmart, JetBlue, SC Johnson, Kibbles ‘n Bits, Nature’s Recipe and the National Milk Mustache “got milk?” Campaign. Finance] AT&T Advanced Ad Solutions Launches ShopAlerts by AT&T, a Groundbreaking Location-Based Marketing Service Featuring Special Offers from Leading National Brands Innovative opt-in service enables marketers to engage consumers on their mobile phones and drive them to the point of sale with relevant location-specific offers NEW YORK, Feb. 28, 2011 /PRNewswire/—AT&T Advanced Ad Solutions and Placecast today announced an agreement to provide ShopAlerts by AT&T, which are special offers delivered to consumers via their mobile phones when they are near a participating store or brand. The unique location-based mobile messaging service will be available for AT&T* customers in New York, Los Angeles, Chicago, and San Francisco who have opted-in to receive such messages. AT&T is the first U.S. mobile carrier to offer a large-scale, location-based mobile marketing program to consumers and advertisers. The innovative ShopAlerts by AT&T service will provide consumers with valuable offers, rewards, and coupons based on their specific geographic location. AT&T creates a “geo-fence” – a virtual-perimeter around a retail location, event, or any geographic area – in order to deliver appropriate location-specific messages. Participating consumers receive relevant marketing messages when they are inside a geo-fence, benefiting both consumers and marketers. The messages are enhanced with information such as weather, traffic, and local shopping area details to more effectively engage consumers. Numerous companies have recognized the value of the ShopAlerts by AT&T service, and the initial presenting sponsors will be HP, Kmart, JetBlue, SC Johnson, Kibbles ‘n Bits, Nature’s Recipe and the National Milk Mustache “got milk?” Campaign. “We are proud to take mobile marketing into the future with this unique offering that is being embraced by consumers and brands alike,” said Greg McCastle, senior vice president of AT&T Advanced Ad Solutions. “ShopAlerts by AT&T enables brands/advertisers to help link consumer engagement with activation and ultimately to the point of sale.” “Kmart has embraced technology to enhance our customer’s experience and maintain our value proposition,” said Mark Snyder, chief marketing officer of Kmart. “ShopAlerts allows us to deliver this value directly to our customers through innovative technology.” Katie Thompson, associate director of digital media of JetBlue, notes that ShopAlerts is a clear fit for many advertisers, including beyond just those with brick and mortar locations. “We were excited about the opportunity because it takes the onus off of the advertiser to build a large database of opt-in users that the true power of the technology can be harnessed,” said Thompson. Pioneering Location-based Technology and Media The program combines the location-based technology platform and expertise of San Francisco-based Placecast with AT&T’s large subscriber base, outstanding Web and mobile media properties, and strong relationships with national advertisers and media buyers. The initiative marks the first time a major operator in the U.S. is introducing such a program at scale. “At HP, we are continuously implementing innovative new marketing platforms that will resonate with our customers’ mobile lifestyles,” said Tariq Hassan, vice president, Worldwide Marketing and Communications, Imaging and Printing Group, HP. “ShopAlerts by AT&T service enables us to deliver relevant, location-based content to our customers.” “Placecast is excited to work with AT&T to deliver a new generation of opt-in marketing services focused on delivering relevant messages to consumers when they are in a mindset to make a purchase. Retailers and subscribers alike benefit from messages with tailored offers available nearby, based on their trusted relationship with AT&T,” says Alistair Goodman, CEO of Placecast. Customers in participating markets can visit the customer portal and opt-in at www.att.com/shopalerts. *AT&T products and services are provided or offered by subsidiaries and affiliates of AT&T Inc. under the AT&T brand and not by AT&T Inc. The new page is showing an infographic of network speeds from Atlanta and New York City showing T-Mobile ahead by a long ways. Plus, they have also reminded everyone once again that the iPhone 4 is a 3G device “despite the 4.” And of course, how could they forget to mention the data pricing which compares their 4G with AT&T and Verizon 3G and once again makes it look like T-Mobile is the clear choice. T-Mobile may have a great network in some areas, but just like every other carrier—they are not the best in every area. Bottom line, while carriers can and will talk smack, the best network if the one that offers the best speed and coverage in the area where you live or work. The details are coming by way of a PlayBook video that was shot during Mobile World Congress where a representative from RIM states that they “will also support Android apps when we release the Dalvik engine on top of QNX." And for those not as familiar with Dalvik, this is an open source virtual machine. Of course, what this really seems to mean is that (assuming this actually happens) the PlayBook should have a nice head start at launch. After all, the Android Market is already established. But then again, I am not all that certain that users are simply going to be able to fire up the Android Market and begin downloading apps. Sure the PlayBook may be able to run these apps, but RIM would still need to work a deal with Google in order to have that Market app available. Otherwise the Android app usage would be limited to what users can scavenge in the form of random APK files. The details are coming by way of Engadget who are citing the very standard “people familiar with the matter.” According to the details from those sources, the battery life is so bad that it is even difficult to test the phone. So bad in fact, that it was noted that some units are seeing only three hours from full charge to nothing. Needless to say, it sounds like there are some updates being made to the firmware and it looks like that as of now the Thunderbolt is still being worked on for an upcoming release. Of course, no one seems to have ay idea when that time may come. But if nothing else, at least we should see a handset that has good battery life once its available.
