Section: Communications, Cellphones, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile It looks like RIM, the maker of BlackBerry devices, is aiming to add inexpensive entry-level smartphones to their offerings. According to Business Insider, RIM’s chief manufacturer Marvell, reported lower earnings due to a switch to inexpensive devices. It is believed that RIM is behind this switch. According to Marketwatch, CEO Sehat Sutardja blamed the results on a switch by one of Marvell’s customers toward building low-cost, low-margin smartphones—a market that Marvell does not supply. That customer is widely understood to be RIM. A quick look over at AT&T and I am questioning this logic. If RIM are staying away from the quick messaging devices, which it would seem, then they will compete with their own offerings. Witness: Refurb BlackBerry Torch: $9.99 (non-refurb is $99) BlackBerry Pearl 3G: $.01 BlackBerry Curve 3G: $49.99 Given these prices at market, where is RIM looking to exploit? They are already in the bargain bin, dropping that penny isn’t going to gain much and could devalue the brand as a whole. Readers, does this move make any sense to you? Anyway, according to what we have here the tablets will include a 7 inch and a 10 inch model and are going to be a step up from their current tablet devices. And unfortunately, details such as hardware, software and potential price points all remain a mystery. That said, Archos may surprise us with something a little more high-end later this year, and while we here at Gadgetell are fans of Archos, lets just hope they decide to use a better display in these higher end devices. And as a side note, this 10 inch Android tablet in the above picture is the current model and nothing indicative of what we may see come IFA. Google originally announced the purchase of the Gizmo5 service back in November of 2009 and almost immediately welcomed all by closing off new signups. Since that time there was a little chatter about better Google Voice support coming in a Gizmo5 update. but for the most past, aside from some rumors along the way— the Gizmo5 service has been dead ever since. And that pretty much wraps things up because as of today, Google has given Gizmo5 the official death notice. “As of April 3, 2011, Gizmo5 service will be discontinued.” That said, if you happen to still be a Gizmo5 user you may want to login to your account sooner rather than later and learn about what you need to do with your existing credits. Hint, you can request a refund of have them transferred to your Google Voice account. Gizmo5 is writing to let you know that we will no longer be providing service starting on April 3, 2011. A week from today, March 11, 2011, you will no longer be able to add credit to your account. Although the standalone Gizmo5 client will no longer be available, we have since launched the ability to call phones from within Gmail at even more affordable rates. If you purchased calling credit and have a balance remaining in your account, you can request a refund by logging in to http://my.gizmo5.com. If you are in the United States, you can instead choose to transfer your credit to a Google Voice account, so it can be used for calling from Google Voice or Gmail. If you don't have a Google Voice account, please create one so that we can transfer your credit. Please request a call credit transfer or refund by April 3, 2011. If you don't request a call credit transfer or refund by this date, we will automatically refund your remaining call credit via the payment method you originally used to purchase the credit. Note that if you paid via Moneybookers or if the credit card on file has expired, we will not be able to automatically refund your unused credit, so please log in to initiate the refund process. Well, in a little bit of good news, AT&T has confirmed that those users with the now grandfathered unlimited iPad data plan will be able to transfer their plan over to an iPad 2, should they decide to upgrade. And just like that, I now have one less excuse when it comes time to resist upgrading. A loss of a device of such magnitude is more than just a kick to the wallet these days. Now, losing a cell phone or digital camera is loss of personal information. Luckily, RewardTag is a website that is dedicated to helping people retrieve lost gadgets. The “high quality” tags that are used by the website help digitally connect a personal message, cash reward and contact information directly to the device through an ID number. The best thing about this site is that users can/will be offered incentives to return any and all lost items. Think of Reward Tag as a handy-dandy lost-and-found for those of you aren’t good at keeping track of your gadgets. And what’s a better incentive than cash? According to the Threat Level blog on Wired; “The approved subpoena requires the company to turn over "documents reproducing all server logs, IP address logs, account information, account access records and application or registration forms" tied to Hotz's hosting. The Bluehost subpoena also demands "any other identifying information corresponding to persons or computers who have accessed or downloaded files hosted using your service and associated" with the www.geohot.com website, including but not limited to the "geohot.com/jailbreak.zip file." And if that sounds bad enough, a judge has also reportedly signed off on a subpoena for the blogger account, geohotps.3.blogspot.com as well as the YouTube account for “geohot” so they can look for and try to “identify who watched the video and "documents reproducing all records or usernames and IP addresses that have posted or published comments in response to the video." Crazy stuff, and with that, this last bit should not be as much of a surprise, but they have also gone after his Twitter account and "documents sufficient to identify all names, addresses, and telephone numbers associated with the Twitter account." Of course, while we here at Gadgetell are all rooting for Hotz, we have to say that the recent rap video is still a favorite and has been played more times than we care to admit. Anyway, Verizon has quietly added the information page for the Apple iPad 2 onto their website with the “Coming Friday, March 11.” teaser. Otherwise, not much else to go on as we see just that little bit and a place where you can trade your email address for the privilege of receiving updates directly from Verizon. That said, the pricing with Verizon will be the same as with Apple, in other words $629, $729 and $829 for the 16GB, 32GB and 64GB model respectively. Well, that is unless they surprise us all by offering some less expensive and on-contract. Granted, we don’t really believe that is going to happen, but hey, one can dream. And as one would expect with these listings, there is not all that much in terms of goodies that have been dug up. The filing consists of the standard goodies including the confidentiality request letter, FCC ID label and location as well as some testing reports. What we can tell you however is that the Galaxy Tab 10.1 has the model number of P7100 and it is sporting support for the 850 / 1900 MHz bands, which many will recognize as the once needed to AT&T 3G. You know, the Pre Plus was already there and the Pre 2 does not offer all that much above and beyond and well perhaps more important—HP already announced the Pre 3. That said, and for those not willing or without the will power to wait for the Pre 3 to come available, we have nice deal in the form of the Verizon branded Pre 2—$49.99. Yup, HP, by way of the HP Wireless store has dropped the price of the handset on a two-year agreement and is even throwing in free shipping in the process. All said and done, the Pre 2 is a decent phone, but hard to justify coming from the Pre Plus.
