These Robot Quadrocopter Jugglers Perform For Your Amusement… For Now

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 05:34 AM PDT

If you’ve watched some of our previous robotic quadrocopter coverage you’ll have seen these little choppers fly through hoops and interact with humans in fairly mundane ways. Now I’d like you to watch this video of two quadrocopters sharing a nice game of catch. They target the ball and throw it back to the thrower and once you have two in the same pen they start throwing the balls to each other. The result? Mirth and merriment!

These robots were made by researchers at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich (ETHZ) and use highly precise positioning sensors to tap the balls into play and then right themselves before they fall.

Now while I’m fine with these things playing ball, I worry what will happen when they get tired of these jackanapes and begin to prefer controlling humans by threatening them with live grenades thrown hither and yon as we cower in fear of our new robotic masters. While I doubt it will happen this year, there’s always the chance these things can become sentient before 2012 when the Mayan calendar runs out and we’re invaded by aliens anyway, so win-win.

Acer Releases Dual-Screen Iconia “Touchbook”

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 12:05 AM PDT

It is rare to find a device that is both baffling and compelling. We’ve been talking about the Acer Iconia for a while now and this dual-screened tablet or “Touchbook” is now available and shipping in the US next month. It runs a Core i5 chip, Windows 7, and has two 14-inch screens made of high-strength Gorilla Glass that allow for typing, multi-touch, and gestures.

Acer has created an entirely new interface to the dual-screen system including an odd “ring” interface that lets you select items on screen by making a claw with your hand and spinning onscreen images. Add in various other elements including an onscreen keyboard that essentially turns this thing into a regular laptop and you’ve got something that may be worth a second look.

It is shipping in April for $1,199.99.

Acer Iconia Touchbook Dual-Screen Tablet
Provides Engaging, Natural Way to Interact with Digital Data

World's First and Only Tablet Featuring Two 14-inch Touch Screen Displays
Now Available for Pre-Sale in the U.S. and Canada

SAN JOSE, CA – March 29, 2011 – Acer today announced that its much anticipated dual screen tablet, the Iconia-6120 Dual-Screen Touchbook is now available for pre-sale in North America. Providing a powerful, immersive touch experience like no other, it is the world's first and only tablet to offer two touch-enabled 14-inch high-definition widescreen LED backlit LCDs.

Intuitive to use and customizable to individual needs, it combines the power of Intel Core i5 processing with the familiarity of Windows 7, and is destined to change how people use technology to engage with the world. A winner of this year's prestigious "Last Gadget Standing" award at CES, the Iconia was noted for incorporating the best features of any notebook or tablet device.

With the flexibility to use a finger, type on a virtual keyboard, or use a combination of both, the Iconia Touchbook provides many ways to make the computing experience a truly personal one. Consumers can customize what is shown on each screen, allowing them to watch a video on the top screen and browse their multimedia library on the bottom one, or view a single web page across the two displays. Using the bottom screen to manage and control the action on the top screen keeps presentations, movies or web pages free of icons and other navigational tools.

Extremely durable and scratch resistant, the Iconia's 14-inch LCDs are made of ultra-thin Gorilla® Glass from Corning, a renowned manufacturer of extremely durable glass. With a wipe and clean coating, it's easy to keep the displays shiny and smudge-free.

"The Acer Iconia Touchbook delivers a computing and visual experience like no other," said Eric Ackerson, senior product marketing manager, Acer America. "Whether the Touchbook is used by a small business owner or a student, its unique dual screen design enhances the interaction they will have with their digital data. Our compelling design and applications will let them discover new and much more personal ways to communicate and enjoy the computing experience, regardless of whether it's work related or for personal enjoyment."

The Heart of Iconia – the Acer Ring Control Interface
The unique Acer Ring Control Interface makes navigating by touch simple and intuitive. By placing five fingers in a circular pattern on the bottom display, the Acer Ring appears, providing instant access to favorite applications and features. From this point, consumers can use their fingertip or launch the virtual keyboard to change the tablet's settings, surf the web, capture screen images, post photos and status updates to a social network, watch a movie and more, all in the manner most comfortable and natural to them.

AppCards Provide Quick and Easy Access to Productivity and Entertainment-Based Applications
Appearing on the either side of the Acer Ring is a unique set of Iconia touch-based applications, called AppCards. Using a finger, users can scroll to the one they want, and simply tap it to have instant access to a range of compelling programs ideal for either business or home use.

• TouchBrowser is specifically designed to offer a more comfortable web surfing experience when using touch input. Upon launching, web content will flow across both screens. A toolbar at the bottom of either screen provides easy control over the open pages. To enter a website address, consumers can use the virtual keyboard or enter it using handwriting gestures. A pinching action will zoom in on the content on the page. Pages can be added to Favorites by simply tapping the Add Favorites icon.

• MyJournal is a handy place to keep clippings of websites and other information. Images can be captured from any web page and organized onto a single, easy-to-view page. It includes pre-set tabs for News, Sports, Entertainment, Politics and Business. The selected website content on the tabbed pages is automatically updated each time it's opened. A toolbar at the top of the page makes it easy to edit, resize, rename and move clips to other pages. In a business environment, a professional will find this feature useful in tracking news on competitors or to keep an eye on the stock market. A consumer can follow a local news story, their favorite sports team or keep an eye on their favorite celebrity's latest antics.

• Social Jogger simultaneously connects to three of the most popular social networking sites — Flickr, Facebook, and YouTube, presenting them a simple interface on one screen. Users can check posts and updates on one screen at a glance, and use the other screen to view one of the sites in more detail, surf the web, view photos or work on a spreadsheet.

• Scrapbook is a convenient place to store website and photo images and other content. It includes a pen tool for drawing or entering handwritten text, such as adding comments or reminders. From there, images can be exported to the clipboard for insertion into other applications, or saved as an image file.

• TouchPhoto, TouchMusic and TouchVideo provide direct access to multimedia files stored on the tablet.

Easy-to-use Tools Make Navigating Intuitive and Fun
Appearing directly on the Acer Ring are a number of useful functions and tools, including Virtual Keyboard, Gesture Editor, Capture, Webclip, Windows Manager and Device Control. Tapping the desired tool's icon brings it up for immediate use.

• The Virtual Keyboard gives users the ability to enter data and navigate in a familiar fashion. Combined with its touch capabilities, the Iconia Touchbook is a flexible and powerful tablet designed for maximum efficiency and productivity. When both palms are placed on the bottom screen, the virtual full-sized keyboard instantly appears. Adaptive typing and predictive text allows for quick data entry and minimizes mistakes. A numeric touchpad with handwriting recognition converts handwriting to text. The palm rest area can also be customized with any image on the computer – a company logo or a scenic background — so users can personalize the tablet even more.

• Gesture Editor is a simple and quick way to instantly launch specific applications, access favorite websites, or even to lock the computer with a simple finger motion. A set of pre-defined gestures is included, but customized gestures can be created in just five easy steps. For example, simply drawing a $ (dollar sign) on the screen can launch a financial or accounting application, or a v (checkmark) can open a to-do list.

• The Capture tool allows users to clip parts of an image (a photo, illustration or a webpage) and save it to the Scrapbook application for further editing. It's a great way to collect images for use in a PowerPoint presentation. And it couldn't be easier to do. With the picture on the top screen and the Scrapbook page opened on the bottom display, users just tap the Capture tool, run their finger around the desired image and then tap the area to open a menu that will allow them to drag and drop it onto the Scrapbook page. The captured image will automatically be added as a thumbnail image above the scrapbook page for quick and easy viewing. They can then drag and drop the desired thumbnail onto the page, where it can be rotated or resized with pinching actions.

• The Web Clip tool is specifically for clipping parts of web pages to save to MyJournal. Tap the screen, select the area to crop, tap and drag on any of the corners of the selected area to size it, and then tap the area again to open a menu to paste the content into MyJournal, Scrapbook or copy it to the clipboard. It can also be saved as a bitmap file.

• Window Manager provides a touch-friendly interface for controlling the various open windows on the displays. Users can customize which screen the application appears on as well as its size.

• Device Control is an easy way to access and adjust power, display and volume settings, wireless connections and various devices connected to the HDMI, VGA and USB ports.

Clear.fi makes data sharing convenient in small office environment or the home
Making it easy to share multimedia content, the Acer Iconia Touchbook features clear.fi, Acer's digital media sharing solution. Clear.fi automatically connects all Acer devices on a network (smartphones, notebooks, desktops, HD media players and storage devices) and then gathers and organizes media files by type (video, music, photo, pre-recorded TV). Users can browse the categories and then drag and drop the media to any of the connected PCs or devices for playback.

No-Compromises Tablet Features Leading Technology for Maximum Productivity and Fun
A super charged tablet filled with enough leading technology to rival many desktop and notebook PCs in performance, the Iconia-6120 Dual-Screen Touchbook is powerful enough to handle demanding applications and graphic intensive multimedia files. Featuring an Intel® Core™ i5 Processor with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology(2), 4GB of memory and Intel® HD graphics, the Touchbook is equipped for heavy lifting. In addition, Dolby® Advanced Audio™ v3 brings vibrant sound to business presentations, movies, music, and games.

Intel Lowers Prices And Doubles Capacity Of New SSDs

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 07:58 PM PDT

SSDs have been on my Amazon Wishlist for over a year now, but the prices have always been a little higher than my blogger’s salary allowed. The good news is that when new technology gets older, we enjoy very nice price cuts. This is no more obvious then here with the new third-generation SSD 320 Series from Intel.

The new SSD 320 Series is Intel’s successor to the X25-M SATA SSD series. These new drives are great for the average user, but if you plan on doing a lot of video editing or sound production then it is worth going for the faster 510 Series. For the most part, the speeds are great at 270MB/s and 220MB/s read and write, thanks to the 3Gbps SATA II interface.

Prices

  • 40GB: $89
  • 80GB: $159
  • 120GB: $209
  • 160GB: $289
  • 300GB: $529
  • 600GB: $1,069

Left-Handed DSLR Hack – Take That, Righty!

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 06:59 PM PDT

Matt over at Gizmodo points out a nice bit of DIY work done by Andrew Scrivani, a left-handed photographer for the NY Times. His right arm is out of commission for a while, and left-handed SLR bodies are expensive as hell, so he went to his gear closet and put together this little hack.

Basically it’s just a rigid bracket for him to hold while he fires the remote with his incapacitated hand; he can’t do everything, but he can at least hand-hold the camera and get the shot. More details at Scrivani’s blog.

This OCD Chef Cutting Board Aligns Perfectly With My Neuroses

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 06:00 PM PDT

I won’t deny it — I get pretty neurotic when I’m chopping stuff in my kitchen. I was just fretting over some barbecued pork earlier that I simply couldn’t slice into pieces of equal width. Cheese is like that too, and of course celery. Maybe I’m crazy (I’m crazy), but I think we can all agree that this measurement-covered cutting board is a pretty good idea.

I mean, look at it. It’s got a protractor on there! And all the little grids? Magical.

Unfortunately it doesn’t have any method of chopping things exactly down the line, like those big paper choppers we used to use at school. That would be handy, and you could measure out your carrot sticks extra-precisely. I guess I’ll have to keep on guesstimating and hope nobody notices that the cheddar cubes are, strictly speaking, rectangular solids.

Kenwood Ships New In-Dash Nav System With Pandora Link

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 05:31 PM PDT

Kenwood started shipping their new DNX9980HD in-dash navigation receiver this week. This is the company’s first model to offer both HD Radio and Pandora Internet Radio link.

For the Pandora Link to work, users will need an iPhone with the Pandora app on it; all the same controls from the app interface will be mimicked onscreen. Album artwork and various visuals get displayed on the 6.95-inch touchscreen as well as the main function: navigation.

The navigation is powered by Garmin and includes realistic looking 3D buildings and landmarks for maps around metropolitan areas. Also, with an optional module, the DNX9980HD will be able to retrieve vehicle data such as fuel consumption, engine temperature and exhaust emissions.

The fully-featured unit also includes built-in Navteq Live Traffic for free and voice recognition for hands-free operation of the navigation system. With all the standard features, it’s going to give many in-car infotainment systems a run for their money — as it should for $2000. But, while the Pandora Link is impressive, I’ve been able to do this with only an Aux jack for a while.

Press Release

Long Beach, CA

Kenwood USA Corporation announces the delivery of two navigation/entertainment systems specifically engineered and manufactured exclusively for the Kenwood eXcelon dealer network.

Kenwood's new flagship double-DIN multimedia / navigation receiver is the DNX9980HD ($2,000.00 suggested retail price), which is Kenwood's first multimedia model to incorporate HD Radio and the Pandora internet radio link as built-in features.  Along with better sound quality and additional HD Radio-specific programming, the user can enjoy full-color album artwork and other visuals appearing on the touch screen display.  New for 2011 is the addition of Pandora internet radio control capability when used with a Pandora-enabled iPhone (Internet access required).  All seek, search and "thumbs up/down" functions are replicated on the faceplate of the DNX9980HD, and the 6.95" touch screen display presents full-color album art, song title, album and artist.

Advanced 3-D navigation technology by Garmin is included, offering three-dimensional buildings and landmarks with many images being photo-realistic.  Lane Assist with Junction View are two features that reduce highway interchange confusion and improve driving safety.  ecoRoute provides the most fuel efficient travel routes, and the optional ecoRoute HD even allows the user to view vehicle diagnostics such as fuel consumption, engine temperature and exhaust emissions (ecoRoute HD requires the optional KNA-EC100 external ODBII interface module).  The DNX9980HD also includes built-in NAVTEQ Live Traffic service that is free for the life of the product.  Kenwood's voice control feature allows the user to fully operate the navigation system and utilize features such as entering addresses or phone numbers, choosing menu options and select points of interest.  The voice control system will also operate the audio and video systems, allowing the user to change between multiple sources, access entries in a cellular phonebook, make phone calls, seek out music and video files and access station presets.  Twin iPod control allows for the connection and operation of two iPod, iPod Touch or iPhone devices.

The DNX9980HD has an advanced Digital Aria 3-D animated graphic user interface (GUI) with selectable skins and movable, drag-and-drop icons for complete customization.  A high-resolution WVGA 6.95" touch screen with Dynamic Brightness Control provides the best looking DVD video, iPod video and USB video.  While in the navigation mode, the DNX9980HD can display mapping information as well as audio/video controls on a split screen and will even allow continued monitoring of the navigation screen in split screen view while making or taking hands-free phone calls.  The latest Parrot Bluetooth module is built into the DNX9980HD and is capable of A2DP stereo audio streaming from a similarly-equipped portable digital media player or Smartphone.

The double-DIN DNX6980 ($1,200.00 suggested retail price) is a value-added combination of cutting edge technologies, intuitive user interface and great Kenwood eXcelon quality.  With the Garmin navigation and Parrot Bluetooth built right into the unit, the DNX6980 offers the latest in technologies at an attractive price.  A compact front-panel knob is included to easily control volume.  An upgraded 6.1" WVGA LCD touch screen panel with navigation/audio/video split screen view capabilities give the user complete control over multiple audio and video sources, including DVD, MP3/WMA compact disc, iPod, iPhone, Pandora internet radio link, external mass storage devices, satellite radio and HD Radio (optional iPod, HD Radio or satellite radio accessories and Internet access may be required).  The user can customize the GUI and hard-key illumination colors of the DNX6980 to match the unit's faceplate lighting to the interior lighting of many vehicles, while the background and startup screen graphics can be changed to show personal photos or the brand logo of the vehicle.

The DNX9980HD and DNX6980 come with two-year warranties and are available only through authorized Kenwood eXcelon retailers.

Nintendo 3DS Chip Gets Taken Apart, Memory Specs Found

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 04:00 PM PDT

After a thorough teardown of the 3DS and its components, Chipworks was able to figure out how much RAM the 3DS has. X-raying the chip in question, the Fujitsu MB82M8080-07L, led to a special model code being discovered inside the die. From the number Chipworks was able to conclude that the 3DS comes with 128 MB of RAM. The speed of the chip is claimed by Fujitsu to be 3.2 GB/s, which is about double that of DDR2′s capability.

Now, wouldn’t it be easier if Nintendo just mentioned that, without having to all X-ray on the thing? That’s Nintendo: making things difficult since Battletoads.

Everything’s Amazing: Louis CK’s ‘Louie’ Hits DVD, Blu-ray June 21

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 03:40 PM PDT

Don’t have a Blu-ray player yet? You’re going to want to get one before June 21, for that’s when Louis CK’s "Louie" makes its way to the format. It’ll also be available on plain ol’ DVD if that’s your thing.

Why is this appearing on CrunchGear? Because Louis CK is the man, and because his "everything’s amazing but nobody’s happy" performance is a continual reminder to all tech fans: just because your 3G service cuts out here and there doesn’t mean you’re not living in an age where the average person is living a more luxuriously advanced life than the best kinds of Europe lived back in the day. You have the Internet in your hands, wherever you go! That’s genuinely remarkable.

But nooooo! This phone doesn’t have Froyo, this laptop doesn’t have Tegra, this e-reader is only in monochrome, etc.

The Blu-ray and DVD collection will come with a bunch of unaired material, including deleted scenes and unrated sets.

And you probably already know this, but "Louie" has been picked up for a second season.

Amazon lists the release as being a package DVD+Blu-ray combo, but I don’t see that information in the e-mail we just received, so it’s a bit of a mystery.

MIT Scientist Claims To Have Created Practical “Artificial Leaf”

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 03:20 PM PDT

One of the things green energy proponents eagerly look forward to is an “artificial leaf”: a truly small, portable, modular photosynthetic power plant. The ability to take a hundred or a thousand such units and plaster them on a wall, roof, tree, or whatever, and have them store power in a simple fuel cell all day long would be a great way to make power distribution less tricky in countries where there aren’t exactly power lines running everywhere.

MIT’s Daniel Nocera has apparently made a major advance just recently, producing an artificial leaf that not only uses cheap materials, but is ten times as efficient as a real leaf at the photosynthesis process.

The technology simulates photosynthesis by using sunlight to split water into hydrogen and oxygen; only a short while ago did Nocera manage to create a system, using a “proprietary solution of cobalt and phosphate,” that was able to convert sunlight at a better efficiency than solar cells. It can use dirty water, too, unlike some existing electrolysis/fuel cell solutions.

His study has only just been submitted to Science, and has not been reviewed or replicated, but that didn’t seem to matter to Tata, the Indian industrial giant, who have decided to work with Nocera — presumably to manufacture and distribute the system in India. With lots of sun and a huge population, it’s a natural fit.

Of course right now there’s very little information, no paper, and no pictures, so let’s all just take this info with a grain of salt and wait until we hear more.

Panasonic And Partners Announce New M-3DI Active-Shutter 3D Standard

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 02:00 PM PDT

Because the world of 3D isn’t confusing enough already! Yes, a new standard is rising, led by Panasonic and joined by a number of partners. M-3DI is a new “can we all just agree on this” standard for active-shutter 3D systems. What differentiates it from the systems that don’t follow its standard? Nothing, it appears, except that M-3DI devices will all work with each other. I guess that’s something.

So Panasonic and Xpand 3D are the leaders, and Hitachi, Mitsubishi, ViewSonic, and several other manufacturers are joining the fun. What about Sony, Samsung, LG, and the others, you ask? Not involved. You’ll have to use their glasses.

Of course, the active shutter generation of 3D is going to be obsolete in a year or two once polarized or glasses-free takes over. I’m glad Panny is trying to smooth out the active-shutter landscape, but I can’t get excited when I’ve never liked the technology and know it’s on its way out.

Here’s the full press release:

M-3DI STANDARD TO CREATE COMPATIBILITY AMONG 3D TVs,

3D PROJECTORS AND 3D CINEMAS

Licensing of Cross-Industry 3D Active Shutter Eyewear Technology to Start Next Month

New York, NY – Panasonic and XPAND 3D announced that they have formulated M-3DI, a new standard for 3D active-shutter eyewear products that will bring about compatibility among 3D TVs, computers, home projectors and cinema projection. Other leading 3D technology providers for televisions, projectors and cinemas have agreed to participate in supporting the new standard, including Changhong Electric Co., Ltd., FUNAI Electric Co., Ltd., Hisense Electric Co., Ltd., Hitachi Consumer Electronics Co., Ltd., Mitsubishi Electric Corporation, Seiko Epson Corporation, SIM2 Multimedia S.p.A. and ViewSonic Corporation.

Licensing of the M-3DI technology will begin next month from M-3DI License Agent (e-mail: license@m-3di.com), providing a communication protocol between 3D active-shutter eyewear products and 3D-capable TVs, front projectors, computers and cinema systems (XPAND-compatible theaters). The technology will let consumers enjoy the immersive 3D experience across all types of compatible 3D displays as well as at movie theaters, with a single pair of 3D active-shutter eyewear.

The M-3DI standard will also assure consumers of comprehensive quality control in the creation of their 3D eyewear; Participants in the standard-making will publish the specification of the standard and will organize quality control testing and approval procedures.

A new era in home entertainment started last year when major television manufacturers released Full HD 3D TV sets to enable high quality 3D viewing in the comfort of consumers' living rooms. While the popularity of 3D at home is projected to increase significantly, until now there has been limited compatibility among 3D glasses offered by various TV manufacturers, as they use different methods to communicate between the 3D active-shutter eyewear and the 3D display. With the M-3DI standard, the participants in the standards process aim to make the 3D viewing experience more enjoyable and convenient, and to enhance the appeal of 3D entertainment among a wider audience.

The proponents of the M-3DI standard believe that this program, as an industry-wide initiative, will make a significant contribution to accelerate penetration of 3D TVs, computers and projectors. While the M-3DI standard to be licensed at this time uses infrared communication technology, radio communications will be considered for the next step.

“Panasonic has led in Full HD 3D innovation through the development of technologies that enable consumers to have a truly immersive experience with our 3D VIERA HDTV’s and Blu-ray 3D players,” said Hirotoshi Uehara, director of the Television Business Unit, Visual Products and Display Devices Business Group of Panasonic's AVC Networks Company. “Now, we are excited to be joining XPAND 3D and the other participants of the M-3DI initiative to make Full HD 3D TV even more widely accessible. Joining forces with other 3D product manufacturers to standardize active-shutter 3D eyewear will help ensure that consumers have a superlative 3D experience at home and in the movie theater. This is a major step toward creating truly universal 3D eyewear.”

Commenting on the standard, XPAND 3D Chief Executive Officer Maria Costeira noted, "M-3DI eliminates confusion, provides a strong, uniform performance standard and ensures that manufacturers can concentrate on innovation and consumers can count on interoperability. Now, with M-3DI glasses, consumers can enjoy the most advanced, immersive 3D experience in XPAND 3D cinemas, on the laptop or in the workplace or school! We are pleased to join the other participants in M-3DI to ensure that the amazing potential of 3D is achieved in every imaginable 3D application."

*M-3DI standard: A standard for 3D active-shutter eyewear usable for viewing 3D theaters, TVs, computers and home projectors.

Participants in the M-3DI standard:

Changhong Electric Co., Ltd.

FUNAI Electric Co., Ltd.

Hisense Electric Co., Ltd.

Hitachi Consumer Electronics Co., Ltd.

Mitsubishi Electric Corporation

Onkyo Rolls Out New Networked Stereo Receiver

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 01:30 PM PDT

Onkyo has added a new stereo receiver with networking capabilities to their lineup for 2011. The TX-8050 Network Stereo Receiver gets many of the new connection features found in Onkyo’s bigger multi-channel receivers like a USB port on the front and an ethernet port for connecting to multiple internet radio stations (Pandora, Rhapsody, Napster, SIRIUS XM Internet Radio, Slacker, Last.fm, Mediafly, and vTuner). The TX-8050′s network function also takes advantage of the Onkyo Remote App for iPhone, allowing owners to control functions of the receiver as well as picking which internet radio station to listen in on.

There’s also the C-7030 CD player in the press release, but since CD players are dead, there isn’t anything to write home about. Nothing innovative on this, nonetheless we welcome its further evolution.

Prices for the Onkyo TX-8050 and C-7030 are $399 and $249 respectively and will be available in late April.

Press Release

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NJ (3/28/11) — Onkyo, a company with decades of expertise in high-quality audio, has introduced the versatile TX-8050 network stereo receiver and C-7030 CD player. These precision-crafted components represent Onkyo's contribution to a new generation of music enthusiasts seeking excellence in two-channel performance at an affordable price. Both products embrace the purity and simplicity of stereo sound, whether it is from a classic phonograph or CD, or the latest in new-technology and streaming network-sourced music.

The Onkyo TX-8050 Network Stereo Receiver will connect a wide range of modern and vintage music sources to one of the company’s classic, low-distortion power amplifier sections. A front-panel USB port allows direct digital connection for iPod/iPhone and other USB devices. An Ethernet jack provides streaming internet radio or audio from computer or network sources. Onkyo’s proprietary Universal Port provides for Onkyo-branded peripheral iPod/iPhone docks, HD radio tuner, and future wireless options. Finally, supports classic audio sources such as turntable, AM/FM, audio recorder, AV sources, and a CD player via analog or optical/coaxial digital connections.

Like the best classic stereo receivers, the TX-8050 has a powerful discrete-component amplifier design that is FTC rated at 80 watts per channel with no more that 0.08% total harmonic distortion. It will easily drive typical 6-ohm speakers to 100 watts. A massive EI transformer and large 8,200 µF capacitors ensures a stable power supply with the ability to drive high-current loads with both channels, as reflected by it dynamic power rating of 160 watts into 4 ohms. This receiver features Onkyo's proprietary WRAT amplifier technology, which incorporates a low negative-feedback design, closed ground-loop circuits, and a high instantaneous-current capability. Together, these work to reduce distortion and cancel circuit noise, ensuring cleaner and more accurate signal amplification.

The TX-8050's network functionality enables owners to incorporate streaming PC audio and Internet radio into their main entertainment system. Audio played this way offers superior power and fidelity compared to typical PC audio. Supported file types include MP3, WMA, WMA Lossless, FLAC, WAV, Ogg Vorbis, AAC, and LPCM audio. Users can also take advantage of a variety of Internet streaming radio channels from Pandora®, Rhapsody®, Napster, SIRIUS XM Internet Radio®, Slacker™, Last.fm, Mediafly, and vTuner. The receiver is certified with Windows 7 and DLNA Version 1.5.

A further benefit of the TX-8050's network function is the compatibility it provides with Onkyo's Remote App for iPod/iPhone*. This free, downloadable application enables owners to use an iPod touch or iPhone as a remote controller to control a range of functions on the receiver. As well as being able to select internet radio stations this way, users can select streaming audio input from a DLNA-compatible server.

The Onkyo TX-8050 also has a front-panel headphone jack, IR input/output, full-function remote control, A/B speaker outputs, and Zone 2 pre-outs that allow users to send audio to a second room equipped with an amplifier and a pair of speakers.

The Onkyo C-7030 CD player is a quality playback solution that incorporates a new high-precision clock to dramatically reduce timing errors, along with Onkyo's original VLSC™ to reduce pulse noise. Driving the system is a massive, custom-built EI transformer that provides a clean and stable power supply. Build quality is exemplified by a 1.6 mm-thick flat chassis base that helps reduce unwanted vibrations. Like the TX-8050, the C-7030 sports a sleek aluminum front panel that makes a robust yet elegant design statement.

These new products confirm Onkyo's ongoing dedication to making high-performance equipment available to music enthusiasts on every kind of budget.

The Onkyo TX-8050 and C-7030 will be available in late April with suggested retail prices of $399 and $249 respectively.

3DS Crashing To “Black Screen Of Death”?

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 01:00 PM PDT

The 3DS is in the sweaty palms of hundreds of thousands by this time, and you know what that means: launch issues! Yes, like some other major hardware releases, the 3DS’s launch will not be without hiccups. There are reports that a few of the new handhelds are randomly crashing pretty hard to a black screen (seen above, and documented here) recommending a hard reset.

Don’t panic – this is only affecting a few users, and was initially only reported on Monkey Ball and Street Fighter. The situation isn’t really clear, but some are saying that there is an update rolling out that fixes this problem. Resetting as recommended seems to fix it for the moment, and some mention reformatting their SD card to FAT32 solves it. I’d say just hang on and let Nintendo address it, or if you’re concerned and can replicate the problem, take it back to where you bought it, if possible.

We didn’t run into this issue in our review unit. Any of our readers encounter this problem?

Crysis 2 Direct X 11 Patching Incoming?

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 12:30 PM PDT

It looks like the Crysis 2 Direct X 11 patch could be coming sooner rather than later. An item on a German PC gaming site—Germany certainly loves its PC gaming&mash;says that the patch should hit the Internets tomorrow. This is most welcome news.

Somewhere in the too many words I put up yesterday I complained that the game did’t ship with Direct X 11 support. Its not a huge deal but considering Crytek’s pedigree it was disappointing not to see it there from day one.

If the patch drops I’ll be sure to take some comparison screenshots and put ‘em here.

Tethered Jailbreak for iOS 4.3.1 Now Available (But Probably Not A Good Idea)

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 12:02 PM PDT

Just a few days ago, Apple released iOS 4.3.1 — and already, the endlessly ingenious jailbreaking crowd has found their way in. However, let it be known: these early hacks tend to have a caveat or two, and this one’s certainly not the exception.

Rumor: No new iPhone at WWDC this year?

Posted: 28 Mar 2011 12:01 PM PDT

When you do things the same way each and every year, people start to expect it. Take the iPhone, for example; after the first iPhone was announced at the now mostly perished MacWorld conference, every subsequent iPhone announcement (3G, 3GS, 4) came at Apple’s own WWDC. After 3 years of back-to-back-to-back WWDC iPhone releases, people have started to look at WWDC as the iPhone announcement that also happens to have a developer conference built in.

This year, though, things might be a–changin’ — we might not see a new iPhone at WWDC.
