Section: Communications, Cellular Providers It looks like Verizon is really getting behind it’s LTE rollouts. As Sprint and Clearwire still have yet to bring WiMAX to some major cities such as New York City and San Francisco. Verizon is promising that all 30 “NFL cities” will have it’s LTE 4G be the end of this year. Verizon’s goal is to upgrade the backhaul connection of the towers in those cities to Gigabit Ethernet so it can reach the promised speeds of 5-12Mbps down and 2-5Mbps up. It could be possible for those speeds to increase over time, but they’re good for now. It’s easy to assume that by 30 NFL cities, Verizon is lumping the Oakland Raiders and San Francisco 49ers as one big city encompassing the Bay Area. It’s also likely that the New York Jets and Giants are considered the same city. That leaves the question, however, if Verizon means the city they represent, or the city they play in. Does Verizon plan on bringing LTE to East Rutherford, NJ (where both the Jets and Giants play), or to New York City? Or will it all be considered one large city? I’m going to hope that it covers both. The rest of the country will be covered in Verizon’s LTE by 2013. The roll out will be systematic, so it won’t happen all at once, which makes sense, though it’s rough on those living in areas with no NFL teams. It would make sense to bring in LTE to larger cities with no NFL teams next, like Los Angeles or Las Vegas. Or maybe Verizon will take the Clearwire approach and bring LTE to small-to-mid-sized cities before tackling the larger ones. Either way, if you live in or near and NFL city, now you only have to wait a few months to have LTE access. Oh, you will also have to wait until we see actual LTE phones on Verizon. RIM announced that customers are now able to pick up a new Blackberry Curve 3G from Verizon for $30 after a $100 mail-in rebate with new 2 year contract. Not a bad deal considering the Curve upgrade was only announced back in August. And it’s a great phone that carries many of the features of higher end smart phones plus the terrible addiction called Blackberry Messenger. Quick overview the main features on a Blackberry Curve: for one it’s 3G, well equipped with full QWERTY keyboard, optical trackpad, GPS, WiFi, 2 MP camera, and supports up to 32MB microSD memory card expansion. The Blackberry Curve 3G is available today online and should be in stores in a few weeks. Verizon will begin selling third party apps (with a 30/70 split on revenue) through the site and will be responsible for approving or declining apps. Will the move help distinguish Verizon Droid phones or will it just be filled with bloatware? From my vantage point, I don’t see this as a good thing. Forgetting I find most VCast stuff deplorable, having another place to get apps could be confusing for customers. Which app store did you get that in? If more app stores come online, the potential exists for more confusion. Then, there’s the “why?” problem. Why would users want to develop for the Verizon store, reaching only a subset of Android users? Visibility perhaps? Verizon is offering the same take (70%) for developers as Google’s app repository. We would expect these apps to be limited to Verizon phones. Can we have differentiation without fragmentation? It would seem that Google doesn’t have any issue with Verizon moving forward with this, as the two have been buddy-buddy as of late. Perhaps I am wrong on this but it doesn’t feel like a path we want to see for Android. Motorola has made a comeback as of late on the back of Android and now it looks to expand into tablets running the OS. Jha was quick to point out that the currently release of Android isn’t well suited to tablet use, something we’ve heard before, even from Google. “I see the tablet market as an opportunity; no cannibalization with smartphones,” Jha said, according to an AFP report. “iPad is more an extension of iPhone than a migration of a Macintosh. I think that is a natural expansion for us.” If we match this up with a Verizon leak showing a tablet in their plans. Verizon would be a natural partner for Motorola, given their success with the Droid smartphone on the Verizon network. Of major concern is how Motorola and Verizon will price this. If sold only with a contract, we could expect sales to be low, much like the netbooks Verizon currently sells. If Motorola could sell the tablet through Verizon and other retailers (with the ability to activate Verizon broadband connection), the tablet might have a real shot. The image above is of the JooJoo. Shaquille O’Neal has recently been sued by a former employee for an invasion of privacy, personal distress, and racketeering. Tsk tsk Mr. Kazaam, tsk tsk. Shawn Darling, Shaq’s former IT assistant, claims that he hacked into his iMac and deleted emails that would implicate the Big Diesel fraternizing with his mistress. I’m pretty sure that in this scenario, “hacking” really means “looking at his fingers as he types his password.” Who would have thought that the gentle giant was such a sly little devil? O’Neal went to the extent of planting child pornography onto his former assistant’s computer in an attempt to frame him. Shaq allegedly threw Darling’s computer into a lake to which he would later offer cash as a replacement. Oh but don’t you worry, this one keeps getting better. Shaq worked in cahoots with active and retired law enforcement officials to frame Darling for a criminal offense and destroy any evidence that Darling might have against him. Darling stated that there is proof in the form of emails, text messages and photos revealing O’Neal’s affairs. Kudous to you Shaq for trying your darnedest to keep all of the information hidden. Bottom line, it looks like those who are going to make the jump to Windows Phone 7 upon its release will at least be taken care of in terms of Twitter support. Come to think of it, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of a phone from any Russian-based company. But that doesn’t mean they aren’t capable of making such a device. In a recent video, Russian President Dmitri Medvedev and state technology official Sergei Chemezov have a little chat about the future of mobile for their country. Right in the middle, Chemezov busts out Russia’s first domestically made 4G phone. And to the surprise of myself and many of the viewers, there are two screens! One screen on the front I guess you could say is nothing special? When you turn the phone the phone around and realize that there is a screen on the reverse, suddenly the quality of the front screen seems to take a backseat of attention. More interesting is that it looks as though it might be e-ink based, which could be one of the cooler concepts I have seen out of any phone manufacturer to date. Clean, single button front flap is lined with an interior pocket.” A-Line 10 The PortPack 10 (pictured above) is available in black. A headphone cord pass through keeps the music playing and the front flap zips off for a completely different look.” PortPack 10 Similar to the PortPack 10, the CorePack Fly 10 is only available in black. The butterfly feature is also airport security checkpoint friendly, allowing you to lay the bag flat without removing your iPad or NetBook. Use either the over-the-shoulder carry strap, or the built-in brief case style handle. A headphone pass through allows for easy listening while your portable devices stay safely stowed.” CorePack FLY 10 Lastly, in terms of pricing, the PortPack 10 and the CorePack Fly 10 are both $49.95 while the A-Line 10 is priced a little higher at $59.95. Hmm, I am thinking the PortPack 10 may be the bag I have been looking for. And given my previous experience with Speck Products I am fairly certain these will be of high quality. So far the details have yet to be confirmed by Verizon, however they are looking to be accurate. Basically what we have is word coming from BGR who are reporting that the service will be called My Mobile Recovery and going live at www.MyMobileRecovery.com. At this time the website is live, though it makes no mention of being affiliated with Verizon. Either way though, according to the details we have so far, the service will offer features such as device location using GPS, alarms, remote device locking and remote device data wipes. Other details include that this will be a free service for those who have the Total Equipment Coverage (TEC) plan and available for Android, webOS, BlackBerry and Windows Mobile smartphones. The on-demand offering will be in addition to the existing Slacker accounts in that the free account and the Radio Plus accounts will remain intact. The new on-demand service will go under the name of Slacker Premium Radio and offer the same features as a Radio Plus account. In other words, Slacker Premium Radio users can expect to have no ads, no limits on how many songs they can skip and they ability to cache music on mobile devices for offline listening. And of course, the added benefit of on-demand. My only question, can I have it now?
