Boxee Box gets dissected in pass through FCC

Boxee Box dissected
November is coming quickly, which means the Boxee Box is almost upon us.  Today the Boxee Box took one step closer to release by passing through the FCC, and getting dissected.

The dissection of the box reveals nothing new, though it is interesting to see how the internals are arranged to give the Boxee Box it’s angular shape.  The photos themselves are pretty self-explanatory.  You have all the electronics attached to the top of the device, which seems to be the best way to arrange them for the shape, and the power cord all laid out by the FCC for us to see.

What we also get from this pass through the FCC is the Boxee Box user manual.  So, if you really can’t wait for the device to come out, you can pour over every detail of the manual so you know exactly how to make it work when it’s released.  Spoiler alert: the manual doesn’t offer much beyond how to set up the device, which, if you’re reading this, you probably don’t need any help doing.  The hardest part of the set-up seems to be pairing the remote to the Boxee Box.  After that the box is designed to be easy to use, and the manual certainly reflects that.

Verbatim rolls-out the "Clip-it USB Drive" and it functions an actual paperclip

Section: Gadgets / Other, Peripherals, Storage

Verbatim rolls-out the

With online storage becoming less and less expensive and easier and easier to access, it is fairly safe to say that for many, USB flash drives are starting to be more of a novelty or at the very least a backup device in case the cloud is down. That said, this latest flash drive from Verbatim seems to be just that—a novelty. The drive is called the Store 'n' Go "Clip-it USB Drive" and it comes in the form of a working paperclip (and a flash drive). The Clip-it is available in 2GB and 4GB storage capacities and a variety of colors including black, white, yellow, green, pink, blue and orange. Lastly, the drive is priced at €8.99 (about $12 US) for 2GB and €11.49 (about $15 US) for 4GB.

Windows Phone 7 will support tethering, as long as your carrier will allow it

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile

Some good and bad with this latest bit, but first the news—Windows Phone 7 handsets will all have the ability to tether.

“Official confirmation that WP7 supports tethering if carriers enable it (same as Android/BB/iPhone) http://twit.tv/ww174 @ 1:05:40 #wp7 #yam”

Sounds good, except—the decision to allow tethering will be left up to the individual carriers. In other words, tethering, should it be supported will likely come as an extra add-on service and in-turn mean you will be shelling out more money each month.

Droid 2 R2-D2 Edition dummy units begin arriving at Verizon retail locations

Droid 2 R2-D2 Edition dummy units begin arriving at Verizon retail locations

The launch of the R2-D2 Edition of the Droid 2 is getting closer and closer. That said, Verizon is beginning to make the necessary launch day preparations and one of such items are the dummy phones, which are said to be arriving. With that, anyone planning on making a purchase? The one catch here comes in the form of the phone, it should arrive as the same hardware specs as the current Droid 2, which means those that make the purchase are not going to be getting the internals of the Droid 2 World Edition. Of course, I am not sure that will matter quite as much to those interested. After all, this is more about a purchase of something Star Wars than the latest and greatest smartphone.

Netflix may bring streaming-only plan to US

Section: Video, Content

Netflix Canada

After launching Netflix in Canada, Netflix CEO Reed Hastings joked about how Americans won’t notice that Canadians are getting a reduced price for streaming-only service. Now he’s apologizing, and claiming that the company is looking into the same thign for Americans.

In a Netflix blog post Hastings apologized for his comment, which he says was a joke, by clarifying why Canadians are getting a price cut.  He says that the only reason the service is cheaper is because American’s have a DVD-by-mail service alongside the streaming.  He continues on to say that Netflix is looking into providing a similar service to Americans so we can cut out the DVDs and/or Blu-ray discs for streaming-only service.

Its surprising that it took this long for Netflix to “look at adding a streaming-only option in the USA,” seems what a lot of people have been wanting for a while.  It would probably cause an issue for many to decide if they really want/need DVDs alongside the streaming.

Either way, Reed Hastings should learn that “awkward joke[s]” don’t translate well into print.  Don’t worry, though, you can make it all up to us.  Just give the “self-absorbed” Americans streaming access to the three previous seasons of Mad Men like our neighbors to the North get.  That would be the best apology you can make to this particular American.

Hulu facing serious competition with new ivi service

Hulu facing serious competition with new ivi service

Move over, Hulu, there’s a new video service in town that might just be the next big thing. A Seattle based company known simply as ivi Inc. has been making some serious waves in the news with their new video service that will somehow allow them to rebroadcast television online without the permission of broadcasters or content-owners. Upon launching a few weeks ago, the young company has already grabbed attention of the likes of NBC, CBS and Fox in the form of a friendly cease-and-desist.

It sounds too good to be true, doesn’t it? Users simply download the video player software from the company website which allows them to watch retransmitted broadcast signals from all across the country. This will allow our friends in west coast to be able to see our prime time shows three hours before they actually are in pacific time. And yes sports fans, this also means that you’ll be able to catch sports games from out-of-market areas without having to pay for a subscription or satellite television. Productivity would most certainly decrease tenfold on Monday nights…

Seriously though, if this service actually winds up being legitimate, the whole world of television will be flipped upside down. According to ivi CEO Todd Weaver, the company functions as it “pays the Copyright Office which in turn pays the stations an undisclosed amount to pick up the signal, which it does by either placing a physical encoder device at the station or capturing it from satellite or antennae.” The new service is also pocket friendly as ivi initially offers a free 30-day trial. After the month passes and you undoubtedly fall in love with the service, ivi charges $4.99 a month with an additional $0.99 for DVR capability.

Can’t wait to see how this one pans out.
