Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking The official Twitter app for Android, which is ever so aptly named Twitter for Android has been updated. This latest update brings the app up to version 1.4 and seems to take away some of the style. As you can see in the above images, the clouds and bird have been removed. Personally I cannot say that I am all that disappointed as I always felt like the bird was giving me the evil eye. That said, while we hope there are some other changes with this update we have not yet found any. In terms of the changelog, that has not yet been posted by the folks at Twitter, however once available it will be found here. Netflix is launching in the frozen North has launched today, bringing streaming movies and TV shows to English-speaking Canadians. Canadians will pay C$7.99 a month for the ability to stream media to a variety of devices. Netflix says that for now Canadian users will be able to stream content to the PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii, iOS devices, Blu-ray players from Samsung and Toshiba and, of course PCs and Macs. Noticably absent is the Xbox 360, which will gain the service later this fall, and other devices like the new Apple TV and Blu-ray players from Insignia and Vizio which will have Netflix when they launch. Also notable is that Canadian users will be able to stream the content to PS3s without the need for a Blu-ray disc that Americans require, instead just using an app installed on the console. This functionality will be coming to American users by the end of October, finally. While the Canadian service is C$7.99, users will be able to sign up for a free month trail to test out the service. Netflix has announced with the deal that it is partnering with Canadian distributors so it will be able to provide Canadian-made films more easily. Of note is that Netflix says it will be able to stream such titles as “Superbad” and prior seasons of the popular show “Mad Men,” neither of which are available for streaming in the US. Hopefully this means they will be coming to US streaming soon, any chance to watch back episodes of Mad Men without buying them would be great. Canadians can sign up at Netflix.ca. Right now, it is English-only, though Netflix is working on a French-language version for those in Quebec. This update has brought the version up to 4, but more important is the features that came along. The app now features LivePreview, and it seems to be a pretty solid feature to have on a smartphone. “Twidroyd 4 takes full advantage of the Android phone or tablet's orientation. When in "portrait" mode, LivePreviews of plixi or Twitpic photos appear embedded within the tweet, while all other tweets appear as they do in the current version. Turning the device into "landscape" mode automatically opens the LivePreview window, which displays the linked web pages, photos or videos where appropriate and additional information about the tweeter when no links are present. As users move through their tweets, LivePreviews appear instantly, enabling them to easily and quickly see the content that is most important to them.” With that, Twidroyd can be found in the Android Market and is available for devices running 1.5 or later. Though, the new LivePreview feature requires 2.0 or higher. Otherwise, Twidroyd is available as a free and Pro version. The Pro version costs $3.99 and includes features above the free version such as multi-account support, full list support, three desktop widgets for viewing tweets on the device's home screen, native bit.ly support and more. I will confess, I had purchased Twidroyd Pro (back when it was still called Twidroid) but later dropped it for the official Twitter app however with the addition of LivePreviews I am going to have to give it another shot. I am just not so sure how nice live previews are going to be on the smaller display of my Droid Eris. There is a blog to let us know what’s new with each of those products, and some more blogs for almost everything else you can think of that concerns Google. It can be hard to keep track of it all. Thankfully Google has launched a new site with the single purpose of telling us what’s new with Google. The new site is Google New. It collects information from all of the Google blogs to let us know what’s new with any product at Google. There’s a spot on the top of the page for the big new stuff, which is currently introducing Google Instant. Below that there’s snippets from blog covering every small update from the new fonts available in Google Docs to midterm election color-coding in Google Maps and translation tools in Orkut. It also tracks the sort of news that only the webmasters among us would comprehend, or that would only apply to those who use Google AdSense. Google New was a 20% project from a few Googlers who wanted to better show off what the company was doing. It seems strange that it took this long for Google New to launch, seems like something we’ve needed for a while. It makes keeping up with Google much easier than having to subscribe to or visit all those blogs everyday hoping there’s something new and interesting. It should hopefully help others learn about everything Google has for them, or at least just make it easier for those of us who like to know everything Google is doing. And for those keeping track, that would be later than originally expected. Of course, given the original press release announcement never mentioned an actual release date and instead gave us the general sounding statement we cannot really call this a delay. According to the official details from T-Mobile; “The T-Mobile G2 with Google will be available in the U.S. exclusively from T-Mobile, and current T-Mobile customers will have the opportunity to preorder the G2 in limited quantities later this month. Additional availability details will be shared in the coming weeks.” With that, it looks like we can tentatively mark our calendars for the 16th. That is, until another date pops-up. The details are coming by way of the official Facebook page for Virgin Mobile USA and mention the future release of the Samsung Intercept. Based on the ever-so-brief posting, we should hear something in regards to the Intercept sometime “over the next few weeks.” Of course, that does not state whether we are going to see a release or an announcement. Either way, as their posting says; “stay tuned.” Then again, CTIA will be kicking off soon enough, which could be described as a few weeks from now so that may be when the announcement is coming. That said, the Samsung Intercept, while a decent phone is not a super high end device and it would almost seem silly to hold this announcement for then. The report mentions “people familiar with RIM’s plans” and suggests the device could be called the BlackPad. Furthermore, the BlackPad will have a 7-inch touchscreen display, two cameras, Bluetooth, mobile broadband connectivity and see a release sometime in Q4 of this year. That said, and assuming these details are accurate it would then appear as if we would still need to figure out which carrier would end up selling the BlackPad—and for how much. Of course, RIM has yet to comment. Read [WSJ] Full Story » | Written by Robert Nelson for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » More Recent Articles |
