Section: Web, Web Browsers, Websites, Google Rumors have recently surfaced that Google was testing a new search method that might have been released to the public. Today, Google announced on its blog a new way to search—Google Instant. The main idea behind Google Instant is Google will attempt to predict what you are typing before you finish typing and it will display those results instantly. For instance, if I type Motorola Droid 2 into the Google Search box using Instant, as soon as I type Motorola results start displaying the Droid, Droid X, and Droid 2. Here is what Google wants you to know about Instant: Dynamic Results - Google dynamically displays relevant search results as you type so you can quickly interact and click through to the web content you need. Predictions - One of the key technologies in Google Instant is that we predict the rest of your query (in light gray text) before you finish typing. See what you need? Stop typing, look down and find what you're looking for. Scroll to search - Scroll through predictions and see results instantly for each as you arrow down. Google is in the process of rolling out the new search method to everyone, and if you do not like the idea you can always disable it in the preferences. It is currently available for users on browsers such as Chrome, Firefox, Safari and IE 8. Also, Google plans to bring Instant to smartphones this fall, as it noted on Twitter. And the only thing that could make the industry wake up: sales. The iPad is beginning it’s disruption. According to All Things D writer John Paczkowski, UBS analyst Maynard Um says the iPad is having a negative impact on the entire PC industry. "Sales of traditional notebooks appear to be feeling pressure from the iPad, causing a scramble by vendors to launch iPad-like tablets," Um wrote in a note to clients. "We believe that a majority of this impact is occurring on the lower end of PC sales as the iPad is priced close enough to this range that it becomes attractive to consumers looking to make purchases within this segment. We are not sold that the iPad is purely cannibalizing PC sales, as the functionality of the iPad can not yet fully match the functionality of notebook PC's. However, consumers who purchase iPads may be more willing to delay purchases and upgrades of existing PC's." Why? PCs are boring. iPad is fun. Tablets are the new golden goose of PCs. So, we’ll start to see a tablet from everyone. Just as Apple planned. You see, with everyone making them - the product segment becomes solidified, not just something Apple made up (or is “magical” /eye-roll). With competition in an expanding market, we should get an even bigger market: everyone has a tablet. This is good right? It’s a trap! You’re being set up. Apple decided to keep the iPad somewhat restricted in capabilities. Watch someone with an iPad and the keyboard stand - what you are looking at is Apple’s future. As the iPad becomes more powerful, it becomes a dual-use mass consumer device. Great for surfing on the couch (consume mode) or in the dock in the home office with peripherals (create mode). All this plus enough apps to choke an elephant to help you get it all done. Meet the iPad Pro, a beautiful 12” screen, 5x the processing speed, 1TB of storage, ” the best device Apple has ever shipped”-Steve Jobs 2012. Is it really that outlandish? Unless the industry decides to lead and not follow, laptops will likely become things of the past. Apple is betting the industry will follow the money, as it usually does. This will keep Apple’s premium position in the market and keep investors happy for some time to come. What do you think - will tablets become the mainstay in consumers homes? Could office cubes be filled with tablets for most tasks or will the mighty desktop stick around for another decade? Make your voice heard in the comments. The device is the HP Zeen and it is showing the TouchSmart user interface where you can see some of the goodies such as a Printer and HP Gallery app as well as the Internet, Email and Facebook app icons. Also showing its face, for good or bad is the Yahoo! Daily Digest app. More interestingly though is the appearance of the MSNBC and 60 Minutes apps. In the end though, the HP Zeen clearly needs some more time before it is ready for public consumption, but that said, it looks like it is off to a good start. The in-your-hands delivery date is slated for November 4th, what that means in terms of distribution we are unsure but should history repeat itself the major market big box stores should have this shiny package on hand. Online retailers appear to be already taking pre-orders for the bundle and showing a November 4th ship date. Get it while its hot. This year, IDC predicts manufacturers will ship nearly 270 million smartphones (compared to just 173 million in 2009) which equates to a 55.5% increase. There’s no question the smartphone market is booming, where questions arise is IDC’s prediction of market share. IDC extended their forecasts out to 2014, a few four years in the future. Here are the highlights: Windows Phone jumps 43% but is still in 5th place. Windows phone a hit? Apple iOS falls to just 10.9%, a fourth place finish. iOS crumbles under stress? BlackBerry remains flat, posting a negative 3.5% loss at 17.3%. An impressive feat. Android climbs an impressive 51.2% and nabs second place. Android keeps rolling. Symbian remains top banana, commanding 32.9% of the market, but continuing to lose customers. Who? Looking at Windows Mobile, IDC expects a rise in market share from 6.8% to 9.8% (a 43% jump in 4 years). While four years may seem like a lot of time, if we go by past expectations, Windows Phone 7.4 should just be ready to ship (small joke). Clearly, IDC sees Windows Phone having some success to pull out of the nose dive they’ve been in for years. Is it possible that with better competition, Apple’s iOS will lose customers and land around just 10% of the smartphone business? Word has it, iPhone 8 will totally fix the antennae attenuation issue. According to the IDC forecast, iOS will decrease by 25%. webOS, listed in the “other” category, doesn’t do much to draw attention to itself. IDC throws them a 0.2% gain in market share thinking HP will at the very least put some money behind the platform. Unless they are privy to HP new designs and secrets, it’s tough to predict. Will webOS grow out of HP? While the percentages overall may sound ridiculous, I don’t think they are outlandish. See my addtional column above: just loss or gain of marketshare and the numbers are pretty tame. IDC bets that Android will rise high, taking some iOS customers with it. Symbian will continue to slide, while RIM seems to be able to hold on to what they’ve got. Is this voodoo anything to worry about? Not any more than your magic 8 ball. What do you think? Do you see where IDC slipped up and misjudged a platform? Let us know in the comments. Many of these features we gotten our hands on through the ongoing beta releases but today the Mozilla team has finally put out the hardware accelerated video support and something they have dubbed “Visualizing Sounds” with a new API. Director of Firefox Mike Beltzner stated on his blog: Until now, people haven't had the ability to interact with sound on the Web in all the creative ways that video and images allow. Firefox 4 Beta introduces a new audio API to expose the raw audio data housed within the *video* and *audio* elements in HTML5 to redefine how people experience sound on the Web. The second half of the update Mike provided a video showing off the impressive FPS capabilities by “taking advantage of the built-in graphics hardware in Windows computers with DirectX 10….or on supported hardware, Firefox will use Direct2D by default to speed up the display of content” Last and of course most important Beta 4 also carries new security protocol HTTP Strict Transport Security (HSTS) allows the browser to consistently look for a secured connection. See, Firefox 4 already gives you the warm fuzzies and it’s not even ready for prime time. That said, Samsung must feel confident that they have a solid product on their hands because they have recently come forward making some bold statements. “Mr. Yoon said Samsung expects to ship 10 million Galaxy Tabs and take a third of the global tablet market next year.” 10 million Tabs next year, but more interestingly is that they expect to have a third of the global market. Sounds like an impressive goal, but like anything else, time will tell just how accurate this will end up being. Of course, given the interest in the device as is stands and assuming the price is right, this could end up being the case. And we here at Gadgetell would be lying if we were to say that we were not interested. But in the end, that 10 million unit sold mark may be helped by the fact that Samsung plans to make the Galaxy Tab a whole family of devices with possible options coming in the form of a 6 or 10 inch model. According to Google CEO Eric Schmidt, consumers will now be able to have complete internet access throughout televisions completely free. For those of us who are not savvy with technology, this could actually be some very exciting news. Now for those of us who have our computers plugged directly into our TV monitors and live through torrents, this isn’t very much news at all. I digress… Schmidt went on to state that Google will work together with content providers but will not likely begin developing content on their own. It seems as though some major television manufacturers have already shown interest in Google’s newest market expansion venture. Sony has said that it would allow Google TV onto its television sets while Samsung is currently looking into the service to make a final decision on the matter. Google seems to be doing a fine job making its move into different markets unlike some companies (ehhmm Microsoft). But in all seriousness, I can’t wait to see what all of this competition between Apple, Google and Microsoft will boil down to when all is said and done. We can all rest assured that the consumer will more than likely wind up winning. Otherwise, the Samsung Fascinate, which is a Galaxy S branded phone arrives with an on-contract price of $199.99. Now we have a collection of screenshots from a Chinese website, wibozi.com, that show a host of new features for WebOS 2.0. In these new screenshots we see Palm is continuing with it’s Apple-envy by including MobileMe integration, presumably for storage and mail. The shots also show Dropbox and Google Docs integration for storage. Palm has also evidently added Cisco VPN support, making it easier for many users who require a VPN at work or school. For communication, WebOS 2.0 apparently has a host of new services for IM including IRC, LCS, and QQ (which would make sense in what appears to be a Chinese build of the OS). For those of us used to Android, the screenshots also show app selection for filetypes so you can make sure the right apps always open the right files. These new features aren’t necessarily huge, but it’s always nice to have Dropbox and Google Docs support. There’s still no images of the apparent virtual keyboard that was included in the SDK, but that makes sense. That’s not something Palm would include in a beta before the company was ready to show it off. Surely these weren’t huge announcements for Palm, at least not compared with the last official announcement. Hopefully the new user-facing features Pal has yet to announce will be even more interesting. Absolutely need all 34,000 songs in your iTunes library, done. Can’t sleep on the plane and plan to rip your entire DVD collection for that flight from NYC to Stuttgart, done. The HyperDrive iPad functions like your normal external, simple drag and drop management allows you to load whatever you need. To transfer data to the iPad from HyperDrive connect the HyperDrive to the iPad with Apple Camera Connection Kit and standard USB cable, that simple. According to Sanho, to sidestep the 32GB size limit limitation of the Apple Camera Connection Kit they used a “patent pending ability to turn individual file folders into virtual 32GB drives on the fly that are readable by the iPad.” Quite ingenious but Apple has never taken lightly to work-arounds with their products. Stay tuned on that one. But for the time being, looking to beef up your portable library and still keep your iPad around we strongly suggest you consider this nifty external option.
