Section: Video, HDTV ] A few years ago, there was Xbox Media Center, or XBMC, a platform that made the original Xbox into the ultimate media center at the time. Boxee was one platform to come out of it, now there is another: Plex. Plex recently launched it’s newest version Plex/Nine for Mac (no PC version available) to much fanfare. Now Plex is coming to more than just your Mac. Plex has announced that it’s new software will come installed on the HDTV’s and Blu-ray players in LG’s 201 NetCast lineup. Now, rather than having buy a seperate box like the Boxee Box or Apple TV, we can just buy an LG HDTV to play all of our media content. The Plex player will be fully controllable through the remote for the devices, but you can also use the remote apps for iOS (also coming soon to Android) to control the experience. Putting Plex on HDTVs is certainly a big step, and the new software is definitely easy to use for the average user. It will have to compete with the Boxee Box and the Apple TV, both of which can be easily used with any TV, but have the yet-another-set-top-box problem. Both of the boxes, however, will be easier to justify for those who already have an HDTV and a Blu-ray player (should they want one). It will likely just come down to personal choice. Plex, Boxee and Apple will have to compete with Google TV. Google’s got the brand recognition of Apple and might be able to offer an experience to match Boxee or Plex. Regardless of who does better, the promise of bringing the internet to the TV experience is here. At the event, NVIDIA took the time to announce a slew of new GeForce 400M GPUs. The new chips will be included in laptops from Acer, Asus, Dell, Toshiba, Samsung, and Lenovo, with more manufacturers to come. The new 400M GPUs come in two varieties: GTX for “enthusiast users” and GT for “performance users.” There are two GTX chips, the GeForce GTX 470M and GTX 460M. There are five GT chips: GeForce GT 445M, GT 435M, GT 425M, GT 420M and GT 415M. All of them have Optimus built in to switch the GPU on and off when needed to conserve battery life. They will each also offer 3D playback, including NVIDIA 3DTV Play, so you can output your video to a compatible 3DTV and view movies or play games on the big screen. These are the first laptop GPUs made by NVIDIA that use it’s Fermi architecture that’s been on desktop chips for a few months now. The results are pretty fantastic on desktops, and should be just as good on laptops. NVIDIA says it offers 5x faster upload speeds for HD video to Facebook and 10x better graphics performance for StarCraft II. I’d be inclined to believe those figures, better gaming performance from NVIDIA’s laptop GPUs is great, and will surely benefit many college gamers (or those who just prefer to have laptops). Now to wait for Apple to adopt the chips. Consumer watchdog Insidegoogle.com is running the video on a 540 sq. ft. video screen in Times Square, New York City to raise awareness for what they call the need for a “do not track” button on the internet. The video shows Google CEO Eric Schmidt driving an ice cream truck. Click through to the video. “We’re satirizing Schmidt in the most highly trafficked public square in the nation to make the public aware of how out of touch Schmidt and Google are when it comes to our privacy rights,” said Jamie Court, president of Consumer Watchdog, and author of The Progressive’s Guide To Raising Hell (Chelsea Green, September 2010). “America needs a ‘Do Not Track Me’ list and Google is Exhibit A in the case for it.” The group aims to: —Create an “anonymous button” to keep purchases and surfing private: 86% favor; 9% oppose. —Keep kids surfing private: 84% favor; 10% oppose. —Require written authorization for companies to track you: 84% favor; 11% oppose. —Stop childrens surfing and purchases from being tracked and stored by online companies: 83% favor; 12% oppose. —Create a “do not call” list for the internet, administered by the FTC: 80% favor; 12% oppose. The company expects the work to be completed by the end of this year or the beginning of next (confirming all their jobs have a large window). In addition to enhanced coverage for Virginians, AT&T will launch Alltel in new geographic regions in the state. “Every residential Alltel customer in these areas joining AT&T as a result of the transaction will receive an offer for a brand new AT&T handset at no additional cost.(2) Customers will be able to choose their free device from a list of the latest AT&T 3G handsets that are comparable to what they have today.(3) Additionally, the vast majority of customers choosing free comparable devices will be able to keep their existing rate plans, and none of these customers will be required to assume an additional contract term.” It would seem every residential Alltel customer will be forced to upgrade, not a horrible thing but something to be aware of.
