Did Google delay the Droid X by forcing out Skyhook?

Section: Communications, Smartphones

Skyhook Wireless
Google’s Android platform has been championed as the side of openness compared to Apple in the mobile OS wars, but it seems that claim isn’t as clear as you’d think.  According to a lawsuit filed by Skyhook against Google, it would seem that in some instances Google is running more of a closed platform.

According to Skyhook, in order to have Google apps and the Android Market on devices, Google is requiring OEMs to use Google Location Service.  Google is effectively blocking Skyhook XPS out of location on Android phones as a result.  Skyhook claims that Google requires each device and software to go through a two-step process in order to be included in the “Android ecosystem.”  The first step is the device and it’s embedded software is run through the Compatibility Test Suite to determine “whether the device and software are compatible with the published Android specifications.”  The second step is eerily similar to how Apple’ App Store process in handled.  The devices are run through a review based on the “Compliance Definition Document.”  Those reviews are handled by Google employees, which Skyhook claims could mean that Google can arbitrarily claim anything on the device in “non-compatible” with the CCD.

Skyhook claims that as part of this review, Google is telling companies that they have to use Google Location Service on their phones.  As a result, it seems that the Droid X arrived later than intended, as Motorola was using Skyhook XPS for location, and was told it had to remove the service from the phone.

Doesn’t really sound as open as Google would like us to think, but this is only Skyhook’s argument.  Surely Google will have an interesting response in the matter.  If Skyhook is right, however, it could be that Google’s device review process is similar to that of Apple’s App review process, which seems a bit damning for the champion of openness.  Having spec requirements for phones is fine, but having to review which service the phone uses for location while allowing crapware that can’t be uninstalled is not cool, Google.

AT&T LTE launch time works perfect for 4G iPhone 5

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Speaking at the Bank of America Merrill Lynch 2010 Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference, AT&T confirmed they are currently testing LTE in Baltimore and Dallas.  The CEO of Operations,John Stankey said the company expects to roll out LTE service commercially in mid-2011.  The company spent $700 million this year for LTE service and expects to spend “far beyond that” in 2011.

Verizon will have a head start, covering 100 million points of presence or POPs by the end of this year.  AT&T is aiming at 70 million by mid next year.  AT&T believes it’s timing is perfect for consumer awareness and device availability.

Is it coincidence that AT&T has had a new iPhone mid-year for the past 4 years and plans to launch their new network around the time that the next iPhone launches?  AT&T currently handles more than 1/2 of the data traffic in the US.  We think it is safe to say the bulk of that data is from iPhones.

AT&T is also beefing up it’s planned LTE fallback, HSPA network, especially in San Fransico where the service has notoriously spotty coverage.  A nationwide HSPA+ rollout is expected later this year that is capable of 7 Mbsp download speeds.

GV Connect, a Google Voice app for the iPhone is now available in the App Store

Section: Apple, Communications, Smartphones, VoIP, Mobile, Web, Google

GV Connect, a Google Voice app for the iPhone is now available in the App Store Without trying to play favorites here, we do have a bit of good news for anyone that has been waiting for the return of a Google Voice app for the iPhone. It seems Apple has finally let one back into the App Store. The app is not the one we mentioned the other day, GV Mobile. At present, that app is still awaiting approval and according to the developer is sitting in an “In Review” status. In other words it looks like we should see it soon. But I digress, back to the app at hand—GV Connect. In short, it is a full featured Google Voice app for the iPhone and is priced at $2.99. In terms of features, here is what you can expect;

  • Place calls using your Google Voice number rather than your mobile number - enter number directly, select a contact from your device’s contacts, or call back any number in your history.
  • Send and receive text messages (SMS) from your Google Voice number.
  • Listen to voicemails and recorded conversations right on your device (allowing you to pause, rewind, or fast forward to any point within the message) - voicemails will also show the transcription of the message when available.
  • Mark messages as starred, attach notes to conversations, block/unblock senders, or delete conversations.
  • Easily search in your history by contact, message, or note.
  • Messages are stored on your device for offline access.
  • Composing notes and text messages can be done in landscape mode.
  • Quickly change various Google Voice account settings (call forwarding, do-not-disturb, message notifications, …) directly from within the application.
  • Automatic checking for new messages while the application is active.
  • Direct access to your device’s contacts without needing to synchronize them with Google.
  • All communication is done with the Google Voice website directly, no need to hand over your account information to a third-party.
  • Full support for fast app switching in iOS4 and high-resolution graphics for retina displays.

Football in HD comes to Boxee

Section: Video, Content

UFL on Boxee With devices like the upcoming Boxee Box and Apple TV it’s easy to say that you’d willingly cancel your cable subscription and use their services for media consumption.  The one thing most of these boxes lack, however, is live sports, which is increasingly the one reason to continue subscribing to cable.  Today Boxee has announced a partnership that’s one step closer to changing that.

Starting today you can get free HD (American) football games on Boxee.  Before you get too excited, the games are from the UFL (United Football League), so it’s not exactly the NFL, but it’s still football.  To make it better, the broadcast of the games are free.  The games come by way of a Boxee app, titles United Football League.  You’ll be able to get “almost every league game” from the Boxee app at the same time they air on Versus and HDNet.  The Boxee broadcast will have the same features as the traditional broadcast, and you’ll also be able to go back and watch previous games on-demand.

Now, this isn’t the first sports league to come to Boxee, MLB.tv has been on the platform since the launch of the App Library.  However, the UFL provides the games for free rather than charging the ridiculous amount of money the MLB wants.  The UFL isn’t nearly as large as the MLB, and only has a few teams in markets that the NFL leaves out (Las Vegas, Omaha, Hartford, Orlando and Sacramento so far), so the league more needs the publicity more than the money.  Even if there isn’t a team for your area, football is football, and having access to a newer league is better than not having acces to any.  Although, if the NFL could come to Boxee, I’d gladly cancel cable.

Who's on Crack in tech:9.17.10

Section: Video, Communications, Computers, Gadgets / Other, Features, Originals, Columns, Who's On Crack

What's the most common phrase heard around the Gadgetell newsroom?  Is it "I love Apple?", "that's cool!" or "sweet!"?  Answer: none of them, it's "they are on crack."  This week we take a look back at the things that made us chuckle in the tech world.  This week, it seems there were more folks on dope than not.  Lets get to this week's accused:

Verizon knows you

<3 football
Oprah gets into the phone game
Google follows Sanka: goes Instant
Nelson allows iPad vs Cats

Verizon bringing LTE to 30 “NFL cities”

Mobile phone geeks and football is like chocolate and peanutbutter - two greats that go great together.  According to our Shawn Ingram, Verizon is on the ball: “Verizon is promising that all 30 "NFL cities" will have it's LTE 4G be the end of this year.  You can bet Google search for “NFL cities” will rank tops today as geeks search to see if there city is a NFL one.

Is that the best Verizon can do?  I mean, are folks in Cleveland, Detroit and Green Bay all uppity about LTE?  Sure, sure you say, “it’s fall, this is a timely touchstone.”  They could have gone for all televised stops on the LPGA or the PBA Invitationals or towns with the highest percentage of pigeons per capita.  But no, they went with NFL cities.  Perhaps I am just bitter because I am not in one.

Our Shawn Ingram again has the scoop, “[t]he Defy will debut today on the Oprah Winfrey Show, where we will find out the price of the phone.  The Defy features a 3.7-inch screen running Android 2.1 with Motoblur.  The biggest feature of the phone is that the screen is scratch-resistant, and is able to withstand dust and water.”  And everyone got one.

T-Mobile will be getting the phone for the holidays and so will many Oprah viewers, I suspect.  This kind of main-stream marketing is just what our smartphone wars need: realism.  Phones that work, are easy and intuitive to use and have great service.  Oh, wait - it’s a MOTOBLUR device, does Oprah have a return policy?

Google Instant takes on everything but Starbucks Via

Why Google wants into the coffee business, I’ll never know.  Google Instant seems to be creeping into all Google properties and many that aren’t.  Our Aaron Thacker has the story, “[c]urrent websites available for instatizing are Google, Youtube, Maps, Images, Hacker News, Twitter, PHP, Techmeme, Reddit, iTunes, Flickr, RSS, Youtube Quickplay, Youtube 2, Babelplex and Arledia. At this rate on can expect instantnization of nearly everything by the end of the year.”

Do we need instant?  Let week I mentioned that instant is for those that can’t type.  If you are banging along, even at a measly 30wpm (words per minute for you non-geeks), even you can enter your search term faster than they can offer something else and you read it and react to it.  Instant is wasted on the geeks.

But that hasn’t stopped the “Instant tsunami” which sounds like a breakfast cereal that I would in fact, eat.  It would be organic, naturally and I suspect be filled with loads of fiber (that’s the tsunami part).  And who would have thought a Google news trinket would lead us to a potty joke?  Google Instant is probably suggesting it right now…

Nelson, possibly sleeping at the wheel, allows iPad vs Cats to run

All writers live under the thumbs of our editors.  It is the same here at Gadgetell where Editor Robert Nelson rules with an iron, well, um, mouse.  After writing up a post about a Facebook poll, I decided the story was too contrived - some insurance company wanted to get hits for saying iPods are our most valuable possession.  I wasn’t about to be complicit in helping them.

Instead, I found an interesting battle for 8th position for things Facebook users identified as most valuable to them.  #8 was iPads (in line with other gadgets and dogs).  #9 was Cats.  Interesting that the Facebook crowd (a subset of the Internet crowd) goes with dogs over cats.  Perhaps the bigger story was how dogs beat out the iPads.  But with all the hoopla surrounding the almost inexplicable meme LOL Cats, they only managed #9?

What’s interesting is I expected to get an earnest talking to, a slap on the wrist or at least, a boot to the weekend when we get all those geeky fringe readers (I have no data to support that claim, just a gut feeling). Instead, I didn’t get a peep.  I didn’t want to bug the always-busy or running Nelson for fear of bringing it to his attention.  I suspect he rarely gets to the end of my posts, so I think we are safe here too.  So, either for allowing it, or missing it, Nelson is on crack.

Windows Phone 7 to launch as GSM-only with CDMA devices coming in 2011

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Earlier today we mentioned that Verizon did not have any plans to launch a Windows Phone 7 handset this year. And while those initial reports made it seem like Verizon was doing the snubbing, it turns out that this may have been coming from Microsoft. No, not that they were telling Verizon to take a hike, but instead Windows Phone 7 is going to launch with support for GSM networks only.

“We had to make some trade-offs,” senior product manager Greg Sullivan told CNET today. “Even Microsoft doesn’t have unlimited resources. We had to prioritize doing fewer things, really, really well.”

Further talk from Microsoft has the CDMA versions coming in the “first half of 2011” which seems to be more in line with the comments from Verizon. So I guess they may not be that made from the KIN phones after all. Either way, those on Verizon (and Sprint) are going to have to wait a bit before getting their Windows Phone 7 phones.

Samsung Galaxy Tab bits: Wi-Fi version coming but no 4G & no voice capabilities

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

Samsung Galaxy Tab bits: Wi-Fi version coming but no 4G & no voice capabilities

We are just about on Samsung Galaxy overload here, and while we are looking forward to finding out the official pricing—here are a few other remaining bits of information. Some of these are good and some are not so good. Either way, they are what they are.

  • Samsung will release a Wi-Fi only version of the Galaxy Tab and similar to the carrier announcements, this model is also “coming soon.” In terms of pricing, nothing yet, though given this is also going to be subsidized with the carriers, expect to pay a decent sum for the privilege of having no contract.
  • The Sprint branded version is not going to be like the Epic 4G. In other words, no 4G capable Galaxy Tab is coming. Instead the Sprint Galaxy Tab will be just like the other carrier models—with 3G.
  • The US version of the Galaxy Tab is not going to have any voice support and while that is slightly disappointing at least we will not have to worry about seeing anyone with the 7-inch Galaxy Tab held up to their head chatting.

With that, we are still waiting for carrier pricing. Anyone ready to make a purchase?

Microsoft Windows Phone 7 not coming to Verizon at launch

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Verizon has stated that they will not be offering any Windows Phone 7 handsets at launch. According to a recent Bloomberg Businessweek report;

“Verizon Wireless won't offer a device at the planned fall introduction or at any point this year, Brenda Raney, a Verizon spokeswoman, said today in an interview.”

Regardless of the official reason behind this decision, we cannot help but think that Verizon is still feeling a little hurt by the whole KIN mess. That and, they currently have a pretty good thing going in terms of Android and maybe want to keep riding that wave for a while longer. But rest assured Windows Phone 7 fans, because Verizon is not going to snub it forever. According to additional statements, they should have something available in 2011.

Verizon Droid Eris will not be getting Android 2.2 Froyo [Nothing surprising]

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Coming direct from Verizon and as a not so shocking statement, the Droid Eris will never be updated to Android 2.2 Froyo. As for the not so shocking portion, well Verizon has plenty of other (and newer) Android smartphones, not to mention the Droid Eris has already been given its walking papers.

Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney confirmed that Froyo would not be provided for the Eris. “We have other options in Android devices, so this is part of the normal evolution of our portfolio,”

Bottom line here, if you are a Droid Eris user you have a few options in front of you—root your phone and install a custom ROM, upgrade to a newer Droid phone or just sit back and be happy with the fact that the Eris at least got Android 2.1. Personally I am holding my ground with that last option. Froyo would have been nice, but I will enjoy what I have. After all, Verizon could have left it back on 1.6.

For the second consecutive year, Sprint's reliability rates were second-to-none.
PC World's test involved Sprint, AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile in 13 major cities in all regions of the country during December 2009 and January 2010. In all, roughly 9,000 individual tests of Sprint’s 3G service were conducted from 280 testing locations.  Testing sessions were one minute in duration per location, and network performance can be highly variable from neighborhood to neighborhood. In laptop-based tests, Sprint tied with another carrier for first in 3G network reliability.
With the Sprint Free Guarantee, customers can take advantage of Samsung Galaxy Tab for 30 days.  If not completely satisfied, customers may return the device within 30 days to get reimbursed for the device purchase and activation fee, get both the early termination and restocking fees waived, and receive a full refund for the monthly service plan charges.2
A Sprint developer guide for Samsung Galaxy Tab will be available on the Sprint Application Developer Web site when the device launches. The developer guide will provide details for an Android 2.2 tablet and how to take advantage of Samsung Galaxy Tab's unique hardware and software capabilities on the Sprint network.  In addition, session leaders will cover tablet development at the Sprint Developer Conference during the Android breakout sessions. Samsung Galaxy Tab introduced with multiple carriers

Samsung has changed their game plan to a “one for all” philosophy. First, their Galaxy S smartphone stormed all of the carriers in North America in some form or fashion. Now, Samsung has announced that they are taking the same approach with their much anticipated Galaxy Tab device in terms of carriers. Yes that means that AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, and Verizon will be offering a version of the tablet. Right now, there are no details regarding pricing or subsidies of the device, but more will be known as we enter late October into early November.

Just in case you were wondering, the final specifications of the device were finalized a couple weeks ago in the press release and are stated to be:

The Galaxy Tab features a brilliant 7-inch enhanced TFT display screen, 1GHz Hummingbird Application processor supporting 3D graphics and smooth Web browsing and front and rear-facing cameras for video chat while on-the-go. The Galaxy Tab is powered by Android 2.2™, including full support for Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1. Just like the Galaxy S smart phones, the Galaxy Tab includes Samsung's Social Hub application and the new Media Hub content service, offering a robust collection of premium movies and TV episodes from some of the biggest entertainment companies.

From what I have seen of this tablet, I am satisfied by its performance, but only time will tell as to whether or not it can compete in such an Apple-centric time.
