NVIDIA shows what it has slated after Fermi

NVIDIA Fermi, Kepler and Maxwell

Today marks the opening of NVIDIA’s GPU Technology Conference, and to kick off the conference the company pulled a rare move, it decided to tell us what’s coming next.  After the launch of Fermi last year, it seems NVIDIA is poised to launch the next version by 2011.

The next set of chips after Fermi will be called Kepler.  Kepler chips will be based on a 28nm process, and will put out better performance per Watt than the current Fermi chips.  Rather than the current 1.5 Gigaflops per Watt that the Fermi chips get, Kepler chips should come out to 5 Gigaflops per Watt.  That a 3 to 4 times performance increase, which should reduce the amount of power used by NVIDIA’s GPUs, or at least make them much more efficient than they are now.  Kepler chips will be in production by the end of this year, but are scheduled to ship in 2011.

Looking further ahead, NVIDIA has Maxwell chips coming in 2013 which will offer an even greater performance boost.  All NVIDIA will say about Maxwell is the chips will see about a sixteen-fold increase in performance.  Between the two chips NVIDIA plans to roll out updates to keep the chips relevant.  The updates should include virtual memory and an enhance method for the GPU to handle autonomous functions.

The updates overall should decrease the cost of ownership for NVIDIA’s chips.  It also means that Fermi GPUs will likely go down in price soon when Kepler chips come out, which should be good enough to hold you over until Maxwell in a few years.

Sprint quietly activating WiMAX in San Francisco?

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

Sprint 4G in San Francisco

If you’re living in San Francisco, or happen to visit the city at any time, (or if you just know some people in the area) chances are you’ve had (or heard of) many problems with AT&T’s network, especially when trying to use the iPhone. If those issues caused you to switch to Sprint’s 4G phones, or to pick up an Overdrive, today is cause for celebration.

Despite the lack of any formal announcement from Sprint, it seems San Francisco is finally covered by 4G WiMAX. The network seems to have gone up sometime last night, or today. Either way, those in the city can now access the Internet much faster from their mobile devices, with reports going as high as 7 Mbps down, which is even higher than the advertised 3 to 6 Mbps.  Unfortunately we don’t have to means to test out the new network in San Francisco, so we’ll just have to go with what we’re seeing elsewhere.

We should hopefully expect to see an official announcement from Sprint and Clearwire soon. It seems strange that the network would start working in San Francisco without some sort of huge announcement.  The residents of the city have long complained about the service they receive with the iPhone, and it would only make sense to tout the EVO 4G and Epic 4G as having faster, probably more reliable network coverage in the city by the bay. Either way, have fun with the 4G in San Francisco, those of us in New York are still waiting for the network to be turned on.

Android is short term solution says Nokia boss

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile

Anssi Vanjoki, Nokia’s outgoing EVP, commented today on the rash of stories that broke out about how Nokia might find success if they’d just switch to Android.  Apparently frustrated by the comments, Vanjoki related using Android to Finnish boys"peeing their pants for warmth”, it’s a short term gain.  Nokia is committed to Symbian.

Nokia holds, or at least Vanjoki does, that Android is a bit of a trap that will reduce companies efforts to maintain differentiation between manufacturers devices.  The desire to control the experience is keeping Nokia away from Google’s Android.  Will Android come to be seen as plain vanilla?

It would appear that Motorola and HTC are able to add interface layers to offer customers tweaked versions of the Android experience.  Motorola’s had varying results, it’s MOTOBLUR has been criticized as being too busy while HTC has been slagged about update delays in getting the oft updated Android OS.

It’s been a rough week for Nokia as blogs have lit up with posts regarding a possible delay in bringing the N8 to market.

Tumblr CTO Marco Arment steps down

marco arment tumblr

Announced this morning via his personal blog, microblogging site Tumblr CTO Marco Armnet stated that he is stepping away from the company. Reasons were not made clear in his post but likely to allow him to fully dedicate himself to “read later” side project Instapaper. The service allows you to store nearly anything published on the web by saving it via a browser bookmarklet, iPhone app or handful of other delivery methods and has been voted inside countless publication Top 10 App lists.

After four years of my serving as Tumblr's lead developer, Tumblr's technical management needs have evolved to require types of experience that I don't have, and my independent career has offered a lot of opportunities that I haven't had the time to take full advantage of.

While Tumblr's engineering team continues to grow, instead of continuing full-time, I'll serve an active consulting role.It has been an invaluable experience to develop a product from just two users to one of the top 50 sites in the U.S., and I'm looking forward to staying close to this incredible team.

1.4 million iPhoners to flee to Verizon; LTE to be the story?

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

We know both AT&T and Verizon are hard at work on their LTE build outs.  Verizon will offer it first, followed by AT&T mid-year.  If we can finally believe the end of iPhone exclusivity is here, as a new Credit Suisse report points to, it is shaping up to be a fine battle come next June.

Credit Suisse released a report that says the end of exclusivity will pull 1.4 million iPhone users to the Verizon network.  We expect Apple to build in a LTE radio for both the next AT&T variant and potentially for a new Verizon one.  The two phone will have different fallback radios, GSM for AT&T and CDMA for Verizon.

1.4 million high-dollar users sounds like a lot right?  If you look at AT&T’s expected iPhone subscriber roll, predicted to be 18 million by years end, the Verizon iPhone scenario painted by Credit Suisse isn’t apocolyptic.  Credit Suisse uses a rosier poll that says 23% of subscribers will leave.

It’s true LTE hasn’t been discussed in the Verizon rumors/scenarios.  However, given the Sprint EVO fame, Verizon’s anticipated marketing push for LTE and AT&T dumping in millions, Apple will be in on this and won’t be left in the past.  Apple will keep the iPhone in a premiere role, no matter which network it’s on.

Of course, if Apple let’s Verizon have the LTE iPhone first or any of the other variables in this goes wild, it’s anyone’s ball game.

AT&T satellite phone just $799

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Email / IM, Smartphones, Mobile

AT&T TerreStar Genus satellite phoneRemember when satellite phones were the future?  AT&T is launching one (currently just for business and government contracts) made by TerreStar called the Genus and will sell for $799.  The phone features both GSM (AT&T’s regular network) and satellite capabilities.

The TerreStar Genus will connect to the default GSM network.  Should GSM be unavailable, users can get voice, data and SMS service via satellite.  This phone would be ideal for users frequently going out of coverage, mariners who sail away from coverage and emergency workers who can call each other in the event the network goes down.

The TerreStar Genus runs Windows Mobile 6.5.3.  How bold of AT&T to launch a Windows Mobile device when Windows Phone 7 Series is almost here!  The phone also features GPS, touchscreen, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and a camera.

Satellite service is a subscription extra, $29 per month.  That gets users into the game, then AT&T follows up with 65 cents per minute, 40 cents per message and $5 per megabyte fees.  Not cheap but if you are out of range and need to be in contact, your choices are limited.

While clearly not designed for everyone, the TerreStar Genus is going to make some folks quite happy.

Twitter.com "onmouseover" security flaw: 5 Ways to avoid and fix

Section: Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking

twitter.com security exploit

Twitter.com “onmouseoverbug” this morning has ravaged those using website. The exploit itself is a cross-scripting exploit that allows malicious Javascript to be inserted into a tweet and run code on that users computer. Should you see someone post a Tweet consisting of garble similar to: “onmouseover=”;$(‘textarea:first’).val(this.innerHTML);$(’.status-update-form’).submit();“class=“modal-overlay”/, that user has been infected with the bug. TechCrunch Europe has provided a Top 5 ways to avoid this until the security hole is officially patched

1. Don't use the Twitter web site, especially the older version. However, there are reports the new version, if you have it, is not producing the same effects. But just to be safe, stay off Twitter for the next few hours at least.

2. Use a desktop client or web based client application like Tweetdeck, Seesmic or similar. Although the affected tweets do still appear in your stream as a jumble of words, they will not produce the same mouseover effect. Some desktop clients also allow you to filter out words like "onmouseover" so you needn't see the stream of affected tweets.

3. If you can't use a desktop client or web based client application, Use the Twitter mobile site, which appears to be unaffected.

4. Delete the affected tweets by avoiding the main web site and log-in to the mobile site instead. Then delete the forced Retweet. Delete any tweets so that the worm does not spread to your friends and followers.

5. If you want to be extra, extra safe, change your password, but it's worth pointing out that this bug is not related to passwords.

As of 9:50 EST, Twitter has stated they have identified and closed the Javascript exploit. Just to play it safe I would continue using third party apps until it completely irons itself out.

HP on webOS tablet: our tablet-style devices will be "similar to the iPad"

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers

We have already learned that HP was planning to release a webOS based tablet sometime in 2011 and now, for good or bad it looks like the device will be “similar to the iPad.” The statement comes courtesy of HP’s Peter Helm who stated in an email to the Palm Developer Community that;

“Now that we are officially part of HP, we are going full speed ahead with our applications initiative. Our proprietary operating system, webOS, is now the OS that will be used in HP’s mobile devices. This includes mobile handsets as well as tablet-style devices similar to the iPad. We will accordingly leverage Palm’s ability to innovate and the scale of HP’s vast install base and distribution network previously unavailable to us.”

You can break that down and read into it how ever you see fit. Personally I would say the iPad is a great device and to have something similar in size, shape, features or most important—battery life would be a good thing.

Streaming-only Netflix service said to be launching in Canada tomorrow

Section: Video, Content, Video Providers

According to a recent Reuters report, it looks like Netflix will be coming to Canada as of tomorrow September 22nd.

“Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings will be in Toronto Wednesday to launch an online video subscription service that will allow Canadians to download their favorite flicks and TV shows for a monthly fee.”

The report did not mention anything in terms of pricing, though we can expect it to be similar to the current offerings. Of course, the big difference with the Canadian roll-out and what we have here in the US comes in regards to the DVD’s—those in Canada will not have the option to have DVD’s mailed.

Motorola Flipout launch with AT&T said to have been cancelled

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

Over the weekend we mentioned how AT&T was expected to be launching the Android based Flipout and as it turns out that may not be happening after all. Well, truth be told it did not arrive over the weekend, but it looks like not only did that not happen but that the launch plans have been scrapped entirely. Bottom line, if you were holding out for a Motorola Flipout on AT&T you may be in for a long wait. In other words, you may be best served by picking another device. And while this sounds like a strange move coming from AT&T, especially so late in the game it would not be the first time it happened. In the past AT&T canceled the launch of the Sony Ericsson K850 so late in the game that individual stores had already has the promo materials and other goodies in store. Sorry AT&T branded Motorola Flipout—we hardly never really knew you.

Zune goes international; Marketplace & Zune Pass to launch in UK, France, Italy, Germany and Spain

In a move that sounds like it has come much later than needed, Microsoft has announced the international roll-out of the Zune service. Of course, this sounds like a needed move in advance of the Windows Phone 7 kickoff. With that, version 4.7 of the Zune desktop software is going to be rolled out and that means goodies such as the Zune Pass as well as music and video purchases and movie rentals will be available to international users. The software is said to be coming in the “fall” and will break down as follows;

  • Zune Pass (U.K., France, Italy and Spain). The monthly music subscription service will be available for 9.99 euros /8.99 pounds per month for unlimited download and streaming access to the Zune music catalog and will be accessible on Windows-based PCs, Windows Phone 7 and Xbox LIVE. The offer in the U.S. will remain at $14.99 per month for unlimited downloads and streaming access, with the ability to keep 10 MP3s per month.
  • Music purchase (U.K., France, Italy, Spain and Germany). Expansion to these markets will enable consumers to purchase MP3s and listen on their Windows-based PC, Windows Phone 7 or any other device that supports MP3 format. Users will also be able to purchase music videos to enjoy on Windows-based PC, Windows Phone 7 and Zune on Xbox LIVE.
  • Video purchase (U.K., France, Germany, Canada, Australia and New Zealand).Consumers will now be able to purchase movies to download and watch anywhere — on the big screen in the living room with Xbox LIVE or their Windows-based PC as well as sync it to their Windows Phone 7 to enjoy on the go.
  • Movie rental (U.K., France, Italy, Spain, Germany, Austria, Belgium, Ireland, Netherlands, Switzerland, Mexico, Canada, Australia and New Zealand). In addition to Zune video on Xbox LIVE, consumers in these countries will now be able to rent movies for viewing on their Windows-based PC or choose to sync the rental to their Windows Phone 7.

All things considered I suppose another music subscription service will be a good thing. Of course, we cannot help but overlook the part that says how the “keep 10 MP3s per month feature” will only be “available to U.S. Zune Pass subscribers.”

Nokia delays N8 launch, now expected to arrive in October

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

The last official word came from Nokia back in early September, which called for the N8 to be released sometime at the end of the month. Well, flash forward till today and we are seeing another statement from Nokia, except that statement comes to let us know that the N8 launch has been delayed. And while that may be bad news for anyone that has pre-ordered and it waiting for the N8 to arrive, it comes as good news from Nokia. You see, the delay was a necessary evil because the pre-orders exceeded the expectations of Nokia. That said, the delay is only a “few weeks” and they should now be arriving sometime in October.

“The amount of preorders has exceeded our expectations and we are working hard to deliver the Nokia N8 to the market. In some markets, we had planned to start delivering the Nokia N8s to our pre-order customers by the end of September. To ensure a great user experience, we have decided to hold the shipments for a few weeks to do some final amends. We’re thrilled with the response that we’ve had to the Nokia N8 and assure everyone who’ve pre-ordered it already that it’ll be worth the wait! We expect consumers to get their Nokia N8s during October.”
