Section: Apple, Computers, Software / Applications It’s been a long time coming, and today Microsoft has finally announced that Office for Mac 2011 finally has a firm release date. The next version of the ubiquitous office suite will hit stores on October 26. The new version brings the Mac suite in line with the Windows version, adding in the ribbon interface. The update is much more than that, however, as Office for Mac 2011 brings a speed increase to the software, with the team claiming each app can boot in seconds, and that charts can take a second to create. Office for Mac 2011 also brings a few new interface changes to the suite. Word now has two full screen modes, one for reading and one for writing, both of which look intriguing. There’s also a new option to arrange the layers of images in documents which looks fairly futuristic, and it other probably seen in the video instead of explained. As with most Microsoft products of late, there are multiple SKUs for Office for Mac 2011. Starting at $119.99 there’s Office for Mac 2011 Home and Student edition which offers the simple Word, PowerPoint and Excel trio. For $199.99 there’s the Microsoft Office for Mac 2011 Home and Business edition which adds in Outlook 2011. Outlook is new to Mac users, who have been stuck with Entourage in previous versions of the office suite. It might not be worth the extra $80 for all users, but for those who use Outlook for work, it should be a very welcome addition. This now includes grocery shopping via the Peapod app available on iOS, Android and even webOS devices. The app is free, but the groceries won’t be. The app is pretty simple, much like the online site. I can search for foods, use my last order as a guidepost to create a new one, see all my past purchases or just one particular one. I can even hit “guess my order” which will automatically fill in my frequent purchases. Pretty nifty. It gets better. I can look at specials, but it’s smarter than that. I can look at a list of “My Specials” that highlights past purchases I’ve made that are on sale now. Just like on the website, users can choose a delivery time that suits them. I can search for products or if I happen to have it on hand, I can scan the barcode. Simply click “scan” and line the barcode up with the on screen targets - and your product is hopefully found. Using this feature caused the app to crash a few times but overall it worked OK. I find shopping online or on my phone lowers my grocery bill. I am not tempted to buy stuff I don’t really need and the cart is not subject to whether I am feeling hungry as I stroll through the aisles. Roaming around my kitchen is much easier with the iPhone, ticking off items as opposed to running back to a laptop. I’d rate this app 5/5. It gets the job done quickly and without unnecessary steps. The company has just announced a mashup between the new iPod Nano and the Palm Folio. The result: a small screen that allows control of the phone and a new way to interact with your data. Have we found a new 4th screen? Dangerously close in size to the new iPod Nano, the LiveView can be clipped to clothing or even worn on a wristband like a watch. It has buttons and a touchscreen. LiveView will connect to most Android 2.0 phones via Bluetooth. So what can it be used for? What appears to be the coolest function is control of music and interaction with apps. As you might expect, you can control music on the phone with ease as well. When used with SportyPal Pro running on the phone, you can see much of the data on LiveView, so you don’t need to be whipping the phone out on a run to see how your doing. Facebook, Twitter,RSS feeds, calendar, missed calls and more can be viewed on the screen, though honestly, I am not sure why you’d want to. The only glaringly obvious thing missing is vibration alerts - I couldn’t find the spec in the documentation but that would help me miss my phone’s vibe ring. LiveView doesn’t seem nearly as polished as the iPod Nano; it’s screen doesn’t seem nearly as colorful, multitouch seems to be absent, but that isn’t the bar we should hold it to. LiveView is out-of-the-box thinking from rather stuffy SE. I can see this working well in an office environment when taking your phone out just won’t be acceptable decorum. A quick glance at who is calling and a silencing of the ringer, all from your “wristwatch” is enough to get the interest of many Android users peaked. I really like that SE is looking big picture to make it available for other brands of Android devices. They expect developers to continue to find new and interesting uses for it. LiveView will be available before the end of the year. The details are coming by way of the BusinessOfVideo blog who are reporting that Hulu is coming to the Roku and it has been confirmed as true. Of course, further reading notes that both Roku and Hulu have “no comment” as of now. But that is not really all that surprising given neither has made an official announcement. Given that, it looks like Hulu may soon be available as a channel for Roku set top box users. But then the question comes, which Hulu are we going to see—the free stuff from the Hulu website or the Hulu Plus stuff more familiar with those on the iPad? In the end, we are a little skeptical, though very hopeful. Sadly though, not all that much to report in terms of details, not to mention when it is expected to arrive. That aside though, the image along with some specs do make it look like a handset worth looking forward to seeing. According to the details, which are coming by way of the Boy Genius, the HTC Merge handset will feature Android 2.2, a 5 megapixel camera, microSD card slot and have world phone capabilities. In addition, and as you can see from the image, the handset has a full hardware QWERTY keyboard along with HTC’s Sense user interface. Otherwise, the details include a model number, which is ADR6325. And for those not familiar, the brief history is that Xmarks began in 2006 and at the time they were called Foxmarks. As to what they do, allow users to sync bookmarks across multiple platforms using multiple computers and multiple browsers. In other words, they make it easy for someone to sit down just about anywhere and have their personal bookmarks because not only will they sync with just about any browser, they also offer web access and some mobile apps. In short, this is disappointing for the multi-computer and multi-browser using geek. That said, the news comes by way of a rather long and surprisingly honest blog post. “Our plan is to keep the service running for another 90+ days, after which the plug will be pulled.” In other words, it looks like the service will remain active through the end of the year. If there was ever a hope that someone would step in and continue the service that would be now. Personally I am going to miss them and I would venture to say that I am not alone in that thought. Heck, Xmarks has made it easy for me to use Chrome on my Jolicloud netbook, Firefox and Chrome on my iMac and still access those bookmarks using Mobile Safari on my iPad. Of course, this is more the standard with Amazon so nothing really surprising there. That said, those interested can grab the Fascinate on Verizon Wireless for just one cent. And yes, that does come with a two-year agreement attached. In addition, those making the purchase will get a $30 bill credit for Verizon and free two-day shipping. Sounds like a good deal, especially when you consider the same handset would set you back $199.99 direct with Verizon. Of course, that meant the availability of the once banned GV Mobile + as well as the entry of newcomer GV Connect. But what about an official app from Google? Well, word is that the official Google Voice app has already been approved and is going to show itself in the App Store soon. According to TechCrunch; they have received “word that the official Google Voice application is on its way to the iPhone in the next few weeks. In fact, we've heard from a source close to Google that it's already been approved.” As to what this will be able to offer over and above the other Google Voice apps for the iPhone. Word is that it will include goodies such as push notifications for incoming messages, both in terms of SMS and also voicemail. Time will tell, but it sounds promising. The tablet is called the seven-inch BlackBerry PlayBook, and was unveiled today at BlackBerry DEVCON. RIM is touting the PlayBook as the “Fastest. Tablet. Ever.” The moniker makes sense as it is powered by a Cortex A9 dual-core 1GHz CPU. That CPU allows the PlayBook to offer multitasking, including multiple instances of Flash in the browser or other video running alongside other apps. All of the multitasking is laid out in a manner similar to BlackBerry OS 6 and WebOS, though this is it’s own BlackBerry Tablet OS. The tablet’s OS will also feature full document editing, eBook reading and it can pair with BlackBerry phones. Seems logical, the PlayBook, like other BlackBerrys, is intended for enterprise use. As the name suggests, RIM is trying to make the BlackBerry PlayBook into a portable gaming device. Not sure how that will turn out, since there’s not many games on other BlackBerry devices. Maybe they can get a version of Angry Birds on the platform, that could be enough for most users. The PlayBook also features two, cameras, like the Galaxy Tab. Unlike the Galaxy Tab, the PlayBook allows for HD recording on both the 5MP back camera and 3MP front camera. The cameras will also support video chat, presumably over WiFi. The PlayBook as a whole looks like what the Galaxy Tab should be. The PlayBook has the same screen size and resolution (seven-inches and 1024x600), the cameras are upgraded, and it has a USB and HDMI ports without having to buy a dock. The OS even looks interesting. It might not have the same developer support as Android or iOS, but the multitasking and overall design are intriguing. It looks like an enterprise version of what the WebOS tablet it should be. And let me be one of the many that will hope these are not accurate. That said, according to the AndroidGuys blog, who are working off a tip from on of their AT&T sources, AT&T is going to be offering three options for a la carte data pricing. They are expensive and as follows; - $15/100MB for 1 day
- $30/300MB for 7 day
- $50/1GB for 30 day
I am not sure, given the iPad data is also contract free, it would seem likely that the data pricing would at least be similar to that. And hey, $50 for 1GB sounds outrageously expensive. It also sounds like a Wi-Fi only Galaxy Tab would be the way to go. But remember, this is just rumored information at this point.
