Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, VoIP, Mobile, Web, Google It looks like the recent Google Voice and Sprint integration is having an unexpected consequence for some users. And an unfortunate one at that—one that is resulting in overage charges for some users. According to the details given, when Sprint users set up their Google Voice they are given two options; - Option 1 allows the outgoing calls to be placed with the Caller ID showing the Sprint number
- Option 2 allows the outgoing calls to be placed with the Caller ID showing the Google Voice number
And as many who are using Google Voice would want, they would go for Option 2. Sadly though, that is where the issue seems to be coming into play. According to Sprint (and other carriers), Google Voice numbers are classed as landlines. In other words, your Sprint mobile-to-mobile calling is not going to work as expected because you are not calling another mobile, you are calling a landline. Or at least that is what it looks like to Sprint. That said, according to a statement found on the Sprint/Google Voice user forums, it looks like that is the way things will remain. Bottom line, if you are a Sprint user and have been relying on your free mobile-to-mobile minutes then you may want to double check your setup now and avoid potential overage charges later. That all being said, the same thing happens with Google Voice users on other carriers. Take me for example, I have a Verizon phone but use Google Voice as my ‘primary’ number. In other words, my Google Voice number is the one that I give out to anyone who needs it. But I also have to warn other Verizon users (namely family) who also have Verizon so they do not call me on their Verizon phone expecting to get free in-network calling. Well, coming more recently, it looks like we have another good reason to be anxious—dual-core processors. According to the latest details, which have come by way of Forbes, Nokia will be launching a device in 2012 with a dual-core ST Ericsson U8500 processor. Of course, while that sounds like an exciting bit of news now may not seem quite as exciting when it happens more than 6 months from now. Otherwise, Forbes also noted that the Nokia Windows Phone devices would launch as Windows Phone 8 handsets as opposed to Windows Phone 7 (or 7.5). And as far as 2012, it looks like Nokia is planning to release as many as 12 handsets throughout the year. Kind of a bummer considering the stylus is part of what makes the Flyer seem so cool. But that being said, it looks like a Verizon branded HTC Trophy has made its way into the hands of at least one person. And thankfully they were kind enough to offer some images and video for everyone to drool over. Of course, the handset is set to be available next week, on May 26th, so the wait for everyone to make a purchase is not all that far away. Perhaps the nicer part here is that the images came along with some details including that the handset “seemed very responsive.” Via [TechnoBuffalo] Untitled from Techno Buffalo on Vimeo. Well, it looks like Best Buy has reacted to the excitement and have begun selling the Flyer a little bit early. That said, the details have come by way of a leaked screen capture of an internal Best Buy system and reads as follows; “The HTC Flyer tablet (SKU 2390524) launch was originally schedule for May 22. That date has been relaxed and you can sell upon receiving these units.” With that, those who were planning on spending a few bucks on the 22nd and picking up a Flyer can go ahead and do so today. And the above image provides a nice look at the keyboard which is now sporting a 5th (and numeric) row. Otherwise, the Droid 3 is expected to have a Tegra 2 processor, HDMI out, front facing camera and 8 megapixel rear facing camera. Through this service, 11,000 libraries will allow devices with the Kindle app to digitally checkout books at a moment’s notice. Notes can also be taken within the books and saved using Whispersync. 3M Library Systems will launch a similar service this year called the 3M Cloud Library. The 3M Cloud Library will allow PCs, Macs, iPads, Android tablets, Nooks and 3M eReaders to check out digital books from libraries as well. So far, 3M has enlisted the help of book publishers Random House and IPG who will make its books a part of the 3M Cloud Library. Books can be obtained by using an app, or by accessing the Discovery Terminal download stations in participating libraries. You may have noticed how the 3M Cloud Library doesn’t work with Kindles. This may just be due to the fact that an application needs to be downloaded to use the service. On the other hand, Amazon’s Kindle Library Lending application is clearly competition. If 3M can offer something that Amazon can’t, it stands to gain a larger following. A release date for the 3M Cloud Library has not been set. 3M will demonstrate its new e-readers, the Discovery Terminal and the Cloud Library iPad app on the weekend of June 24 at the American Library Association Annual Conference.
