Shortly after PSN was restored, Sony had fallen victim to an exploit that could have been used to change PSN passwords. Shortly after that, hackers broken into the Sony-owned internet provider known as So-net. The hacker(s) made off with $1,225 in gift points and some 90 email addresses. The latest Sony-got-hacked story deals with Sony BMG in Greece. According to The Hacker News, the Sony BMG Greece website was hacked on May 5. The attacker reportedly used a SQL Injection tool to perform the hack. The customer information obtained in the hack was then posted to pastebin.com (which has since been taken down). The data included real names, user names and email addresses of those who are registered with the songymusic.gr. More crucial information such as passwords were not posted. It is believed that the hacker could not obtain that information. At the time of this writing, sonymusic.gr is not online. The new Square apps add functionality that was missing before, and brings us closer to that dream of easier purchasing. The new Square 2.0 app makes it easier for sellers to organize their items on the iPad. It also allows for variations of items on the iPad, so you don’t need to have separate items for what is essentially the same item with slight variations. For the iPhone, Square 2.0 simply brings some look changes with a “refined look and feel.” The real changes to Square’s system, though, comes in the form of the Square Card Case. The Card Case is an app for the iPhone that holds virtual cards for business that use Square. After your first purchase at a store, you get a text message with your receipt and instructions on how to download the app. After that you can see information about the business, including the full menu for restaurants on that virtual card. You can then place your order directly from the app, using the credit card you first used, with just a press of a virtual button. Then all you have to do at the counter is give your name, and the server takes care of the rest on the Square iPad app. That’s how Square sees the future of purchasing. Not NFC, but simple transactions that are as easy as iTunes or Amazon. Right now Card Case is only available in 50 businesses in San Francisco, New York City, Los Angeles, St. Louis, and Washington, D.C. The plan seems intriguing, and is certainly an easy way for businesses to take care of transactions without having to get cash registers and the like. It’ll be nice to see the Card Case app come to other platforms eventually. Surely iPhone users can’t be the only ones who would want this. Having enjoyed Froyo for quite some time, Droid X users are anxiously awaiting the newer and modern Gingerbread release; and according to a leak, it seems to be right around the corner. An individual from Motorola’s Owner User Groups received an invitation—that you can see above—to participate in a project specifically for the Motorola Droid X. While it doesn’t come out and directly state the project in testing is for Gingerbread on the Droid X, many in the tech community are assuming this to be the case. I doubt Motorola would require extensive user testing for just a simple software update, but upgrading to a newer version of an OS could require as much testing as possible. Now that the confidential project is underway, it is only a matter of time before Gingerbread launches on the Droid X (assuming that the project is actually for Gingerbread). It turns out that Google will not allow rooted Android devices to rent movies from Google Movies. If rooted users try to rent the movies, they get a message saying they aren’t allowed to actually watch the movies “due to requirements related to copyright protection.” Apparently there’s a fear that rooted Android users will pirate their rented movies. Right now the problem only really affects Xoom users at the moment, but will become a larger issue once Google Movies comes to Froyo and Gingerbread (assuming it does). I can see where Google and the movie industry’s fears come from in regards to piracy, but really, who’s going to pirate movies from their mobile devices? It’s hard enough to take a single screenshot on Android devices, let alone record the video and audio on the screen. Surely the rooting community will find a workaround eventually, they usually do. Until then, don’t root your device if you want to legally rent movies. “Open” systems have a real problem with media, it seems. The style of the LG Genesis’ two screens shouldn’t be mistaken for another dual-screen device such as the Kyocera Echo. The Echo’s screens can reside side-by-side, resulting in a mini-tablet display. The Genesis has a screen on the outside and one in the inside. The outer screen measures 3.5-inches while the inner screen is 3.2-inches. The Genesis is powered by Android 2.2 Froyo. It may not have the latest version of Android, but it does have DLNA support. By using DLNA, the Genesis can stream media stored on it such as movies, music and photos to other devices that are DLNA-enabled. The new eReader would be the Kobo eReader Touch, a e-ink reader with “Infrared Touch Technology.” The Kobo eReader Touch looks similar to the other Kobo eReaders, though it lacks the ugly raised square with option. The only button on the front of the device is the small home button. The rest is controlled, you guessed it, by touch. You search for books with an on-screen keyboard, and tap on virtual buttons to buy them. You even turn pages with touch, by simply swiping across the screen. Hopefully there also an option to turn the page by simply tapping on either side of the screen. The other big innovation of the eReader Touch, is the soft touch back, which Kobo claims makes it comfortable to hold for hours. The small size and lightweight help with that as well. The Kobo eReader Touch also brings in Kobo’s Reading Life app which is currently only available to iOS users. The app brings in social network support, and adds badges to your reading experience. It also can give you stats on how much time you spent reading, how many pages you turned, and how long you you spend per reading session. It’s an interesting idea, but I doubt there are many people dying to get stats on their own reading. I would think that just reading the books is enough, as long as the device offers a good reading experience, that should be enough. During a press conference in Cannes, France, Candor said that HP is going to dominate the tablet market. This claim is a big deal considering HP hasn’t released the TouchPad yet. There is a chance that this statement could come back to bite HP where it hurts later down the line. Candor asserted that HP has dominated the PC market. It plans to extend that dominance when it debuts the HP TouchPad, the first tablet running webOS. "In the PC world, with fewer ways of differentiating HP's products from our competitors, we became number one," Candor said. "In the tablet world, we're going to become better than number one. We call it number one plus." How long it would take HP to take over the tablet market wasn’t estimated. At this point in the game, it would be extremely difficult, if not impossible to overtake the iPad in terms of tablet market share. Apple got a year-long head start with the original iPad before the other manufacturers started debuting their tablets. Not only is Apple maintaining its lead, but Android tablets are providing another layer of competition. There will be more than a few tablets running Android 3.x before the TouchPad is released. HP has to find a way to stand out from the crowd. Everybody has heard of Android, but webOS is not heard very often in the general public. The 32GB HP TouchPad is also rumored to cost $599. It’s $100 more than the cheapest iPad 2 and may hurt its chances for consumer adaptation by comparison. Amazon is willing to give up 20GB of Amazon Cloud Drive space for an entire year if you purchase Lady Gaga’s new “Born This Way” album. Amazon has been running a similar 5GB promotion since the Cloud Drive was launched. If you meet certain criteria, and are willing to spend $0.99 for “Born This Way,” Amazon will gladly spare the cloud space. This offer is only valid today (May 23, 2011). Amazon isn’t giving 20GB of Cloud Drive storage to everyone. You cannot have the 5GB Cloud Drive plan already activated. After a year has passed, the 20GB plan will become a free plan unless you start a paid account. Amazon is also giving a $20 Cloud Drive credit to anyone who buys an MP3 album that currently has a 20GB plan. If the 20GB plan is not renewed when the time comes, the $20 credit will be used to renew the 20GB plan anyway. If you’re looking for a cloud storage service, you’re likely to not easily find one that offers 20GB of space for less than a dollar. There are also cloud storage options that are free, but they tend to only offer around 5GB of space. For some people, that may be enough. The latest rumor comes from Taiwan via DigiTimes, who cites multiple sources that Apple will take the glass that adorns the iPhone 4 front and back one step further: to the edges. Apple is going to adopt a curved cover glass for its next generation model, according to industry sources. If true, the rumor suggests Apple will move away from the metal-edged antenna design ala iPhone 4 or the glass could be used over the metal to provide a non-conductive, smooth surface to hold. The results could be great for reception, perhaps less great for the clumsy among us. The edges would seem to be the worst place for glass. Or the glass could just be curved on the touchscreen, much like the older generation iPod Nano. DigiTimes says the glass cutting machines are being assembled and are waiting to be brought online when Apple is happy with it’s testing and fine tuning of the process. It would appear the design is not completed. And while we are happy to see this announced, we are still curious about some of the details—namely the price and most of the specs. That said, we can tell you that the Xi3 will be powered be either a dual- or single-core 64-bit, x86-based processor and the casing will measure in at 4.0 x 3.656 x 3.656 inches. In addition, the casing will be available in a variety of colors, including the Chrome model that you can see in the above image. Otherwise, the remaining specs and the pricing will be “announced later this year.” And while that comment makes it seem like we will have a while to wait, there was also mention of general availability coming on July 4th. Keep reading to check out the full press release… Via [Business Wire] Xi3 Corporation Announces Its ChromiumPC Modular Computer – the World's First Desktop Computer Running Google's Chrome Operating System Based upon the patented Xi3 Computer Architecture, the ChromiumPC computer is a cube-like, small form factor, low-power (20Watts) dual-core modular computer that can be adapted to run other operating systems or to perform specialized functions. Xi3 Corp. has been developing the ChromiumPC since 2009. Pricing will be disclosed later this year, with General Availability expected in the second half of 2011. SALT LAKE CITY—(BUSINESS WIRE)—Xi3® Corporation today announced its ChromiumPC™ modular computer, the world's first desktop computer designed to run Google's Chrome operating system. "Since the Xi3 Computer Architecture allows owners of the Xi3 Modular Computer to declare their independence from the built-in obsolescence of other computers, we felt that American Independence Day would be a great day to begin selling the 5 Series model of the Xi3 Modular Computer." First disclosed by Xi3 Corp. in 2009, the ChromiumPC is a version of the company's Xi3 Modular Computer™ which was formally unveiled in 2010 and named by the Consumer Electronics Association as an Innovations Award Winner in the Computer Hardware category for the 2011 International CES trade show. "The Xi3 Computer Architecture is designed to support any x86-based operating system, including Windows, Linux, Unix, and other open source-based operating systems," said Jason A. Sullivan, president and CEO of Xi3 Corp. "Although we've been promoting, discussing and working on modular computers for some time, we feel the market is now ready for a desktop computer with a cloud-based operating system like the one offered by Google. If someone chooses to switch their ChromiumPC to run a different operating system, it's as easy as swapping out one of the three boards inside the computer. "Historically, the vast majority of operating systems have been installed and run locally on computers. But as technology has advanced and people have become more and more comfortable with using Web-based applications and storing data away from their computer, specifically 'in the cloud,' it only makes sense that operating systems will become cloud-based. In fact, we expect that over time we'll see many operating systems that are wire-bound and require the computer to be connected to the Internet to run, and we will likely support these new operating systems as well." Modularity Explained for the ChromiumPC and Xi3 Modular Computer Each Xi3 Modular Computer, including the ChromiumPC, is housed in an aluminum chassis that holds three small but interconnected boards (or modules), namely The Processor Module™, The Primary I/O Module™, and The Secondary I/O Module™. Taken in concert these three modules form the basis of what has been the classic motherboard, with the Processor Module housing the microprocessor and RAM, the Primary I/O Module typically housing the majority of the external communications ports, and the Secondary I/O Module typically housing Ethernet, video and power connections. Unlike traditional computers, however, the Xi3 Computer Architecture makes it possible to change the so-called personality and/or functionality of an Xi3 Modular Computer, including the ChromiumPC. This is done in eight easy steps: Power down and disconnect the Modular Computer from all external connections Remove the four screws from one of the honeycomb-shaped and chrome-plated sideplates Remove the sideplate from the Modular Computer chassis Slide the three interconnected modules out of the chassis Remove one of the I/O Modules and replace it with a new I/O Module Reinsert the three interconnected modules back inside the chassis Reattach the sideplate to the chassis Reconnect all external connections and power-up the Modular Computer "Based upon feedback and interest from our initial proof-of-concept and evaluation customers, we have already begun developing new Primary and Secondary I/O Modules," Sullivan explained. "We also have partners beginning to develop their own proprietary I/O Modules as well. We expect to have the first of our new I/O Modules available during this summer, each of which will work with the ChromiumPC, as well as Xi3 Modular Computers that run other operating systems." The ChromiumPC will be powered by a dual- or single-core 64-bit, x86-based processor, housed in a chassis measuring 4.0- x 3.656- x 3.656-inches and available in multiple colors, including a chrome-plated chassis. ChromiumPC pricing will be announced later this year, with additional specifications announced at that time. General availability for the ChromiumPC is expected in the second half of 2011. General Availability of the Xi3 Modular Computer Slated for the 4th of July "Given today's announcement about our plans for the ChromiumPC, we felt it important to also let our friends know that formal sales of the Xi3 Modular Computer will begin on July 4, 2011," Sullivan said. "Since the Xi3 Computer Architecture allows owners of the Xi3 Modular Computer to declare their independence from the built-in obsolescence of other computers, we felt that American Independence Day would be a great day to begin selling the 5 Series model of the Xi3 Modular Computer." More details about the General Availability of the Xi3 Modular Computer (5 Series model) will be available before the 4th of July.
