Verizon brings LTE network to nine more markets, expands others

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Mobile

Verizon 4G LTE map

Verizon is marching closer to it’s goal of 147 LTE cities by the end of this year. Today the carrier announced that it has lit up the LTE network in nine more cities, bringing the total number up to 55. In addition to the new cities, Verizon has expanded the coverage in five cities that already have 4G LTE.

Those nine new LTE cities are: Mobile and Montgomery, Ala.; Greater Fairfield and New Haven, Conn.; Gainesville, Pensacola and Tallahassee, Fla.; Fayetteville-Lumberton, N.C.; and Bryan-College Station and Temple-Killeen, Texas. For the first time, people living in those cities can get the full 4G experience out of the Doird Charge, HTC Thunderbolt or one of the 4G mobile hotspots offered by Verizon.

Verizon didn’t forget about those who already have LTE, though. The coverage has been expanded in Atlanta, Chicago, Denver, New Orleans, and Philadelphia. So, if you lived in or around any of those cities, try your 4G connection again. You might just find that it works in places where it didn’t before. The network probably still won’t be everywhere you need to be, but at least it’ll reach a bit further. Enjoy your expanded coverage, I’m still waiting for the New York City coverage to expand to Long Island.

T-Mobile G2x now $99.99 with Wirefly

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

T-Mobile G2x on Wirefly

If you’re looking to pick up a new smartphone on T-Mobile, then you may want to check out a deal Wirefly is currently offering.  The T-Mobile G2x normally retails for $199 on a two year contract, but Wirefly is offering the hot dual-core processor smartphone for only $99 on a two year contract.  While we’re not sure whether this is a limited time deal only, or if Wirefly plans to keep the LG G2x at the affordable contract price of $99, but it is advisable to consider purchasing the phone as soon as possible.  Also, it is important to note that this deal is valid for individuals looking to create a new account with T-Mobile only.  If you plan on upgrading or renewing your contract, then the T-Mobile G2x becomes $149 on the same two year contract.

HP Pre 3 available for pre-order in Germany, listed for June 30

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Web, Websites

HP Pre3 on Amazon.de

Germans are the first to be offered the chance to pre-order the Pre 3. Amazon/de has the HP smartphone up for pre-order, slated for a June 30 release for a price of €448 (about $640).

The June 30 date doesn’t sound like an exact date, however. We’ve been hearing that June could see the launch of the HP Pre 3, but nothing has been announced just yet, and the site could just be hedging it’s bets by going with the last possible date in June. Still, a pre-order page can give us some hope that the phone is ready to be released sometime in the near future. Launching the Pre 3 alongside the TouchPad would make a lot of sense for HP given how the two devices communicate with each other. That would give even more credence to the June release date, given that the TouchPad is rumored to be launched next month as well.

Now all we have to do is wait for HP to announce when the smartphone will actually be launched. A price and carriers would be nice as well. Hopefully we can get all three relatively soon.

Verizon will stop providing unlimited data plans

Section: Business News, Apple, Video, Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

Rule the Air logo

We hoped you enjoyed streaming videos and downloading applications to your heart’s content because that’s soon coming to an end. Sometime this summer, Verizon Wireless will do away with unlimited data plans. Instead of paying a flat fee for all the data consumption you can handle, Verizon will begin offering tiered price plans. That means the more data you use, the more you’ll have to pay. This new shift was outlined by Verizon CFO Fran Shammo during the Reuters Global Technology Summit.

Once unlimited data has been dealt with, Verizon will shift its focus to family plans. While no solid details or even a confirmation has been made yet, Shammo hinted at what he called “mega-plans” for data. Under these mega-plans, families would share data just like they can share minutes right now.

“I think it’s safe to assume that at some point you are going to have mega-plans (for data) and people are going to share that mega-plan based on the number of devices within their family,” Shammo said.

Shammo also spoke about the next iPhone. Shammo didn’t confirm whether the phone is going to be called the iPhone 4S or iPhone 5. Whatever it is called, we know the AT&T and Verizon versions will launch at the same time. The next Verizon iPhone will also work in as many countries as AT&T’s iPhone.

Did the latest BlackBerry PlayBook update have a negative impact on battery life?

Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers

There have been quite a few user reports of battery life issues on the BlackBerry PlayBook as of late, which seem to have all begun popping up after RIM released the 1.0.3 software update earlier this month. The update brought a few features including video chat and BlackBerry Messenger (BBM), however according to a recent report from CIO, the battery life has taken a hit. The report suggests that the battery life has been reduced by as much as 11 percent. That said, while this tip seem to be having mixes results, RIM has offered a suggestion to bring that battery life back to its pre-update lifespan. According to RIM, it will help if you fully charge and discharge the battery several times.

“After upgrading the BlackBerry PlayBook Software to 1.0.3 then restarting the BlackBerry PlayBook, the battery drains faster than normal or the battery level fluctuates irregularly…The BlackBerry PlayBook battery can be retrained by fully discharging and fully recharging the battery a few times.”

Otherwise, another suggestion that may help to improve things is to launch the Video Chat application and accept the terms of conditions.

Kindle proves digital books sell better than physical books

Section: Business News, Gadgets / Other, ebooks

Kindle with Special Offers

Amazon is shrieking (not literally) with glee today. It has announced that books purchased for the Kindle have now surpassed physical book sales. Amazon said that number includes both hardcover and paperback books. As one of the leaders in digital book distribution, Amazon has proven that physical book sales will continue to decline as e-readers and tablets become more popular and affordable.

Amazon said it has sold 105 Kindle books for every 100 physical books. This figure does not include free Kindle books. Amazon said if it did count free Kindle books, the digital to physical book ratio would be even further apart. The physical books that Amazon is including in its report also do not have Kindle editions available. This helps to keep Amazon’s claims nice and balanced.

Amazon also took this opportunity to discuss the success of the Kindle with Special Offers. Amazon’s little experiment with an e-reader subsidized by advertisements has proven to be successful. It’s apparently out-selling all the other Kindles in the United States right now. In true Amazon fashion, it isn’t revealing how many Kindle with Special Offers it has sold.

HTC Bresson smartphone to feature Windows Phone 7 and a 16 megapixel camera?

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

HTC Bresson smartphone to feature Windows Phone 7 and a 16 megapixel camera

We recently saw the 2011 release schedule for T-Mobile come available online and one of the handsets that was included was the HTC Bresson. Needless to say, at that point we had few details available about the handset aside from the name. And well, flash forward just one day and while we do not yet have a complete set of specs, some details are leaking out (including the above image). Anyway, according to PocketNow, the HTC Bresson is going to be a Windows Phone 7 handset that will arrive with a 16 megapixel camera. And for those not following along with Windows Phone at this point, that will be a huge step up from the current lineup which are all sporting 5 megapixel cameras. Otherwise, given the Bresson is not expected to come available until sometime after September, it is believed that it will ship with the “Mango” Windows Phone 7.5 update already in place.

HTC HD7S is coming to AT&T June 5 for $199.99

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile

AT&T HTC HD7S

There’s finally a new Windows Phone 7 phone, well new in that it has a different screen and a different carrier, and now it has a release date. The HTC HD7S, the upgraded version of the HD7 that’s been on T-Mobile since the launch of the platform.

With the HD7S you’re getting essentially the same thing as the HD7, but with a better screen. This time you have a 4.3-inch Super LCD screen, which should be much better than the plain old LCD screen on the previous version. Everything else about the phone is the same 1GHz CPU, the same 16GB of storage, the same 5MP camera, and the same kickstand.

So, if you’ve been waiting for a Windows Phone 7 device on AT&T with a larger, better screen than the current offering, you only have to wait until June 5. You’ll have to pay $199.99 for the privilege, though.

AT&T finally allows sideloading apps on Android, users get access to Amazon Appstore

Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Mobile

AT&T

AT&T infamously prevented users from sideloading apps onto their Android apps since the first such “open” device hit the carrier. Now AT&T will start letting users sideload apps, meaning AT&T customers can finally enjoy the pleasures of the Amazon Appstore.

Starting with the Samsung Infuse 4G, five Android devices on AT&T will get an OTA update to enable the option to sideload apps. The other four devices at the HTC Inspire 4G, Samsung Captivate, HTC Aria and LG Thunder. All of these phones will receive the update over the next few weeks. Noticeably absent is the Motorola Atrix. Fret not Atrix users, your phone will get the update, but only after a “future maintenance release” from Motorola.

After the OTA update users will be able to go into Setting and allow third-party applications to installed on their phones, just like everyone else. That means that they’ll get a chance to get the ad-free version of Angry Birds Rio, and the two-week exclusives of Chuzzle and Plants vs Zombies. There are other apps to download as well, like Grooveshark which recently got kicked out of the Market, or any other app that has been deemed unworthy of the Android Market. But, the most likely thing AT&T users will do with their newfound freedom is download the Amazon Appstore to get their free apps every day.

Rumor: WebOS developer logs show netbook, slate smartphone

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Hardware, Netbooks

HP WebOS netbook

HP is working on bringing WebOS to devices beyond the ones that were officially announced, that we know already. Now thanks to some developer logs we have hints at a WebOS smartphone without a keyboard, and a larger device with a non-sliding keyboard which could be a netbook of some sort.

From the developer logs we can tell that the smartphone has a resolution of 480x320 like the Pre 2, and it running WebOS 3. This could be the same phone that we’ve seen blurry images of in the past. Why it’s packing such a low screen resolution is bothersome, though. Hopefully this is just for testing, and any actual slate-style WebOS phone would a a resolution of at least 800x480.

The netbook, on the other hand, is running at a resolution of 1024x768. The OS version isn’t even listed as WebOS, but as “Nova Dartfish.” This is something completely new, but not unexpected. There have been rumors of WebOS netbooks ever since HP announced the mobile OS would be coming to PCs. The possibility of a WebOS netbook is interesting. Though, as Engadget points out, this could simply be a test of the TouchPad in a special dock running future a version of the OS.

Twitter makes third-party applications more transparent

Section: Business News, Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking

Twitter permissions Twitter rolled out an update today that is designed to restrict third-party applications from accessing direct messages, and help users make more informed decisions when deciding what applications they should link their Twitter accounts to.

From now on, whenever someone tries to grant permission to a third-party application that accesses Twitter, that application will have to list the things it will access from one’s account. If there is anything that a user feels uncomfortable with sharing, they can choose the “No, thanks” option on the Twitter permissions screen.

Also, apps that request access to direct messages will have to ask users a second time. This is designed to make the user fully aware that their most private Twitter interactions will be accessed by someone other than themselves. Twitter also promises states that by the end of May, “applications that do not need access to your direct messages will no longer have it, and you can continue to use these apps as usual.”

This seems like a win for Twitter users, but a potential hassle for developers.

HTC talks tablets, Windows Phone support

Section: Business News, Communications, Smartphones

Florian Seiche As we get closer to the release of HTC’s first tablet in the United States, the HTC Flyer, the company’s European president spoke to attendees at the Reuters Global Technology Summit about the tablet market and Nokia’s recent partnership with Microsoft. Florian Seiche believes the tablet market is going to explode. Ever since the iPad proved there’s huge market potential for tablets, most mobile device manufacturers have been creating their own tablets. Seiche thinks the market boom is just getting started.

“In five years’ time, schools will have tablets probably instead of physical notebooks,” Seiche said. “I think that’s going to be such a massive wave of additional penetration in society… I think we can’t even guess the potential.”

The HTC Flyer released in Europe on May 9. Official sales numbers haven’t been released, but Seiche says HTC feels “very good” about what it has sold so far. Though the HTC Flyer ships with Android 2.3, HTC has confirmed that the tablet will be upgraded to Honeycomb at some point.

Seiche also said that Nokia’s partnership with Microsoft should prove to be beneficial for HTC. Nokia has influence all over the world. When it starts exclusively making phones with the Windows Phone operating system, Microsoft could see a big boost in Windows Phone adaptation. As the platform becomes more relevant, HTC devices running on the Windows Phone OS could stand to see more sales as well.

Angry Birds, Plants vs. Zombies and others coming to Windows Phone 7 in June

Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile, Computers, Software / Applications, Gaming, Games, Mobile

Angry Birds coming to Windows Phone 7 on June 29

The long wait for Angry Birds on Windows Phone 7 is nearing it’s end. To get to the game, however, you have to wait through five other WP7 versions of popular games. One game will be released each week for six week as part of Microsoft’s Must Have Games Program.

To kick off the program, Hydro Thunder Go, an adaptation of the high-speed-boat racer, is coming next week on May 25. June 1 sees the Windows Phone 7 version of the popular iOS game Doodle Jump, which is followed by geoDefense on June 8. Sega will bring Sonic The Hedgehog 4 Episode 1 to the platform on June 15, which I would avoid if it plays anything like the iOS version.

The last two weeks of the event are arguably the best. Plants vs. Zombies comes on June 22, making Windows Phone the third mobile platform to carry the game. Finally, Angry Birds will land on June 29, bringing the long nightmare of the lone mobile OS without the game to an end.

We don’t know exactly how much the games will cost as of right now, but they shouldn’t cost more than a few dollars. Obviously Angry Birds will be big for many, but Plants vs. Zombies is popular in it’s own right. I’m interested to see how well Hydro Thunder Go plays on a smartphone as opposed to consoles. It’s the only one out of the six that we haven’t seen on other platforms yet. For the others the big question is how well the ports hold up on Microsoft’s platform.
