Starting with their June issues both magazines will have either monthly subscriptions of $1.99 a month or $19.99 a year. Print subscribers will be able to get the digital versions without having to pay anything extra. If you don’t want to buy subscriptions to the magazines, you can still buy single iPad issues for $3.99 if that’s what you want. If you already have a subscription to either magazine for the paper version, all you have to do to get the iPad version is put in your subscription information. Then you’ll get free acces to the tablet versions of the magazines. You’ll also get access to other versions of the digital magazines when they come out if you subscribe to the paper versions. That includes the upcoming Android and desktop experiences. Subscriptions are certainly a welcome addition to the Wired and GQ apps. It’s much nicer than having to pay $4.99 or $3.99 per issue like we had to before. It’s also nice that paper subscribers get the digital issues for free. That might make buying the paper subscription worth the hassle again. Or, more likely, Condé Nast will see more people buying the digital subscriptions because they’re much easier. Yesterday we told you about the break-in into the Sony BMG Greece website which was preceeded by a hack into So-net. Before that, a PSN password reset exploit was discovered after the PlayStation Network returned following a nearly four week hiatus. The latest attack occurred on the Sony Music Japan website. Just like the last attack, this hack was made possible by a SQL injection tool. According to The Hacker News, the group responsible for this is known as Lulz Security. The hackers dumped their findings onto pastebin.com (just like the other hacker did). On its Twitter account, Lulz Security has been openly celebrating its work. “You guys wanna see something funny? #Anonymous will like this one, gather round, gather round… #operationpayback,” read one Tweet. In the files uploaded to pastebin.com, LulzSec wrote,“This isn’t a 1337 h4x0r, we just want to embarrass Sony some more. Can this be hack number 8? 7 and a half?!” LulzSec also wrote that there are a couple other vulnerable databases on the website, but didn’t say what information they contained. Unlike the last data dump, there doesn’t appear to be any leaked customer information such as names, passwords and email addresses. Naked Security, a security blog, stated that Lulz Security has hacked sites before, but doesn’t use information it gathers for financial gain. Today Opera Mini 6 is launched for iOS with support for the iPhone 4 Retina Display, and the iPad (both 1 and 2). The new version of the mobile browser is just like the version available for other platforms, but this one supports tablets. Along with support for the Retina Display and iPad Opera Mini 6 brings a few improvements. The browser has improved panning and zooming, both of which are faster, though not as fast as Safari. Pages do seem to load a bit faster than Safari, though, thanks to Opera’s compression. The browser now also has the option to share pages through Facebook, Twitter, My Opera, or vKontakte. Similar features have been in place in Skyfire, but this is in a free browser. The last big update Opera lists is the new skin on the browser and the better designed menus. The browser certainly works well, and it great if you have a slow connection, or if you really hate Safari for some reason. The new skin looks pretty good, though some aspects like the menu options look far too much like an Android app for my liking. Otherwise, it’s a good browser that finally supports the latest iOS devices. Plus, it’s free. What more could you ask for? In case you haven’t heard of it before, the Galaxy Player 4.0 is not another Android smartphone. It does run on Android 2.2, but it’s essentially a Wi-Fi device for media consumption like the iPod Touch. For as long as Android has been around, it’s hard to imagine why no other company has released a device quite like this before. Amazon is now taking pre-orders for the Samsung Galaxy Player 4.0 for $229.99. It will start shipping in three to six weeks. The Galaxy Player 4.0 is priced to compete with iPod Touch. It’s slightly more expensive than the fourth generation 8GB iPod Touch, but cheaper than the 32GB version. The Galaxy Player 4.0 comes with 8GB of internal storage, but unlike the iPod Touch, Samsung’s device can hold a microSD card with up to 32GB of space. That extra space can be used to store music, photos, movies and apps. What you’re getting here is an experience that is almost identical to Samsung Galaxy smartphones. It has access to the Android Market, which could house some apps that allow you to make phone calls over a Wi-Fi connection. It’s definitely possible since I’ve done that with an iPod Touch. The Galaxy Player 4.0 has a 4-inch touchscreen, a 3.2 megapixel rear camera and a VGA quality camera on the front. There’s still no word on a release for the 5-inch Samsung Galaxy player. The only problem: how to get your photos and video from the iPhone to the iPad. Why Apple didn’t homebrew a solution into the iPad is beyond us but thankfully, the developers behind the Transfer app did. Apple expects you to transfer movies via iTunes. Here in the real world, most of us don’t sync regularly so that solution just isn’t attractive. Another route is the iPad camera connector; allowing you to have a wired connection between iPhone and iPad. In searching for a solution, I found that to be OK, but shelling out $40 just wasn’t attractive. That’s when I found the Transfer app. For $2.99 I downloaded the app to both my devices (users only pay once) and was ready to transfer over WiFi. The app is intuitive, simple and does the job very well. Within seconds of downloading, I was transferring my raw videos from the iPhone to the iPad with no issue. To do this, simply open the app on both devices, select the photos or video to transfer and boom: it’s transferring. An bar indicates transfer progress. Bottom line: the whole thing works flawlessly for me. Pictures and video can be transferred via WiFi or you can use Bluetooth for just photos. Currently video is not support via Bluetooth. Images and video can also be shared to a computer browser. Seriously, for the effort saved in iTunes syncing and/or carting around the camera adapter, I’d be willing to pay much more than the $2.99 asking price. If you’re in a similar boat and want to get files from your smartphone to the iPad, this is a great option. Check the video below. There are no new devices to announce at the moment, but we do know that new devices will debut alongside Mango, and will come from seven manufacturers. Four of which we’ve already known and three new manufacturers. The four manufacturers we already know are Samsung, LG, HTC, and Nokia. The first three will launch new phones in the fall alongside Mango. Microsoft’s big partner Nokia will start shipping phones phones with Mango installed. It’s not clear if that means Nokia’s first Windows Phone will come alongside Mango, or if it will come some time after the release of the update. We can hope for a fall release for now, a new Nokia phone running Mango seems like a great way to launch the update. The improvements look great, and Nokia can make great hardware to show them off. Windows Phone Mango will see three new manufacturers as well that should bring the OS to other markets. Those manufacturers are Acer, Fujitsu, and ZTE. They may not be the most popular OEMs for Americans, but these three could certainly drive adoption in other countries. Group them with Nokia, and Microsoft has a pretty good set of handset makers to take on non-US markets. Maybe we’ll see devices from Acer in the US, but it wouldn’t be too surprising if we don’t see much from any of these OEMs stateside. A lot of those new features cam as part of the new web experience for the OS which makes the web act like apps. To start off the talk of the web Microsoft talked about an update we knew was coming: Internet Explorer 9. Mango will bring the latest version of IE to mobile, but unlike Safari on iOS, Microsoft claims this is the same IE9 you’ll find on the desktop. So it brings all the HTML5 improvements we’ve seen with the desktop version of the browser. That means Windows Phone users will finally be able to use the upgraded version of Bing that others have been using for a while now. More interesting than just HTML5 support are the new features for the web called Quick Cards and Local Scout. Quick Cards uses terms you search for in Bing, and creates what looks like a small app to display all the information about them. For example, search for a movie in Bing, and the Quick Card will show you information like the actors and directors, run time and synopsis. The same Quick Card will also show you show times for the movie or business hours for something like a restaurant. The Quick Card will also have App Connect, so it will be able to bring you out to a different app that can get you more information, like IMDB for movies. Local Scout is similar to Quick Cards, but instead of giving information about a single item, it gives you information about whole neighborhoods. Microsoft claims it let’s you act like a local anywhere you are. You’ll get information like news stories in the area and events that are happening in the neighborhood. You’ll also be able to favorite places in the neighborhood, so Local Scout can serve as a directory of all the places you like to go in a neighborhood. Quick Cards and Local Scout both seem like interesting ideas. They seem like features that right now would be apps on any other platform, but Microsoft decided to build them right into the OS itself. They might not be features that convince new people to the platform by themselves, but will certainly make the OS more interesting for those who are already invested. Paired with the 500 other features Microsoft is promising, Mango looks to make a good mobile OS into a great one. Now Microsoft just needs to hope iOS 5 and Ice Cream Sandwich aren’t hiding some even better surprises. According to the Google Chrome Releases Blog, the changes include a file manager context menu, Flash 10.2.158.22, a fix for when the Chat window refused to open and an update to the default avatars and guest icon. The company is called BillGuard and its service is free. BillGuard scans credit card activity for charges that you may not be aware of. It gathers data about potential unwanted charges by drawing from its database of users. It also uses complaints raised on Facebook, Twitter and the Better Business Bureau to help in its flagging process. BillGuard calls itself the “people powered anti-virus for our bills.” It has a pessimistic view on how some merchants charge their customers. In its promotional video, BillGuard says that merchants know that people use their credit cards a lot better than they scan their bills. This can result in overages such as double charges, hidden fees and flat-out theft. By signing up for BillGuard and registering a credit card, users can join a network of other BillGuard customers who flag suspicious activity on their billing statements. Each transaction can fall into three categories - ok, unsure and flag. BillGuard doesn’t store credit card data. It only reads through statements after purchases has been made. BillGuard is backed by six investors and is advised by the former CEO of McAfee and the CEO of BillShrink. The ad is full page and on the back page of the New York Times. And as you would imagine, HP is touting the size of the Veer and making it clear that it is a fully featured smartphone. But perhaps a bit nicer, they are showing off the Veer and not offering reasons why it may be better than something else. As you can see, there is an image of the phone (making no excuse for the small size) with the words “born powerful” across the top. Also included, and out of the above image was text that reads as follows; "Introducing the incredibly powerful, all-new HP Veer 4G. The nation's smallest 4G smartphone. hp.com/veer." The Simple Touch Reader will start shipping on June 10 for $139 (Wi-Fi only). It will also be available at Barnes & Noble stores, Walmart, Best Buy, Staples and Books-A-Million. B&N is making sure The Simple Touch Reader is within the grasp of any common consumer. The Simple Touch Reader carries a more square design compared to the rectangular shape of the 1st Edition Nook and the Nook Color. Another change from previous Nooks is the battery life. The Simple Touch Reader will last for two months on a single fully charged battery. It has 80% less screen flashing, a 6-inchE Ink Pearl Display and weighs less than eight ounces. The Simple Touch Reader is designed to be an e-reader and not a mini-tablet like the Nook Color. It is however powered by Android 2.1. Inside the e-reader is 2GB of internal memory that can be expanded with a microSD card. New features on The Simple Touch Reader reader includes what B&N is calling Fast Page. By holding down on the touchscreen, the device will zip through pages until you find the page you want. It also lets you know how many pages are remaining in the book that’s being viewed. Nook Friends is also coming to The Simple Touch Reader. This social networking add-on has been carried over from the Nook Color. Twitter has acquired Tweetdeck for $40 million in cash and stock. According to CNN Money, the paperwork for making the deal official was signed on Monday. An official announcement is expected to be announced very soon. Tweetdeck is one of the most popular third-party Twitter applications available. Tweetdeck operates desktop clients as well as applications on the iPhone, iPad and Android. TweetDeck also recently released the 2.0 version of its iPhone app. The buyout of TweetDeck is believed to be another move by Twitter to obtain more control over its product. Twitter started putting major restrictions on third-party developers this past March when it told developers to stop making Twitter applications. Twitter’s stance on the subject was that users were getting confused over the way other developers put their own twist on Twitter’s service. Twitter wanted a more consistent experience overall. Twitter also recently made a mandatory permissions page for any web application that requests access to Twitter. This made some developers upset because it requires the user to go through more steps before their app’s access can be authorized. The theory is that users could be less likely to jump through those hoops and just stick to official Twitter experience instead.
