New York Time ZAGGmate Keyboard Case

The New York Times has a new way to convince you to buy a 12 week full digital subscription: by throwing in a ZAGGmate Keyboard Case for your iPad. From now until June 30, buying a 12 week All Digital Access to the Times will also give you the ZAGG iPad case and Bluetooth keyboard.

The subscription and keyboard combination will cost you a total of $105, so it’s not exactly cheap. However, buying the two items individually would run you a total of $205. So, you’re essentially getting one of the items for free, or both half off, depending on how you want to look at these things. To show your support for the newspaper, the ZAGGmate case you receive will be black, and bear the New York Times logo on the front. The design actually looks pretty nice, if you’re willing to advertise for the New York Times.

The ZAGGmate Keyboard Case will support both the iPad 1 and 2, so anyone with the iOS tablet can buy the bundle without fear. I wasn’t too impressed by the case when I came across it at CES a few months back, but it’s not bad for free. Plus, it protects your iPad’s screen, which is always helpful, even if the keyboard leaves a bit to be desired.

Google takes the lid off Google Wallet

Section: Business News, Communications, Smartphones, Web, Google

Google Wallet

Though it was leaked ahead of time, Google officially announced Google Wallet today in New York City. Google Wallet is still in the testing phase and is scheduled to be released soon. When it’s made available, the only device that will be able to use it is the Nexus S 4G which is available on Sprint. Other near field communication (NFC) phones will benefit from Google Wallet later down the line.

The purpose of Google Wallet is to store all your credit cards, gift cards and coupons in one place - a Google phone. Google Wallet stores the information associated with all the plastic cards you carry around now. Whenever you checkout at a participating merchant, you’ll only have to tap your phone on a scanner to complete transactions. Google Wallet will also earn loyalty points and redeem offers when you pay with your phone.

Google Wallet will initially be compatible with Citi MasterCards and a Google Prepaid Card. If you obtain a Google Prepaid Card, you’ll have to put money on it using a variety of other cards you may already have. You can use Google Wallet at stores that accept payments via MasterCard Paypass. Google Wallet will only allow you to use $100 of your Citi MasterCard. If you want to use more, Citi will have to provide you with a special code that has to be entered in Google Wallet.

The only question now is whether you feel comfortable with Google knowing where you go, who you communicate with and your purchasing habits.

BlackBerry Torch 2, more in-the-wild style images appear online

For those who cannot get enough of looking at leaked images of the BlackBerry Torch 2, the crew over at TecnhoBuffalo seem to have been in touch with Mr. Blurrycam who was nice enough to hook them up with an image of the front and back. And just in case anyone wants to look at clear crisp images (no offense to Mr. Blurrycam), there was also the promise that “some distinctly non-blurry goodies coming very, very soon.” That being said, for now we have these two images, along with a recap of the specs which include a 3.2 inch VGA (480 x 640) capacitive touchscreen display, 1.2GHz processor, 768MB RAM, 8GB internal storage, microSD card slot, 1300 mAh battery, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 5 megapixel camera and quad-band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and tri-band HSPA 14.4Mbps radios.

Sprint and Motorola look to have an announcement coming on June 9th

While the event details are rather sparse at the moment, it does look like Sprint and Motorola will be making an announcement come June 9th. The details come by way of a recent “exclusive luncheon event” invitation that has been sent out. The event is touting how those invited can “join Sprint CEO Dan Hesse and Motorola Mobility Chairman and CEO Sanjay Jha at an invitation-only event.” As far as details in terms of what we can expect, that is simply stated as being “hands-on demonstrations of Sprint and Motorola’s latest collaborations.” And that, we take that as new devices.

The T-Mobile G2x is too popular

Section: Business News, Communications, Cellular Providers, Smartphones

G2x product page

Some have found it difficult to purchase a T-Mobile G2x from the carrier’s website lately. When this became known, there were some reports that G2x units were somehow defective, causing T-Mobile to temporarily halt sales until the problem was fixed. T-Mobile addressed these concerns on Twitter by attributing the absence of the G2x to high demand.

“The T-Mobile G2x has been very popular and high demand has resulted in inventory constraints, which we are working to address,” T-Mobile wrote on Twitter. “We are working with LG to address inventory constraints and expect to return to normal levels in the coming weeks.”

You can still purchase the G2x from Amazon Wireless for $99.99 with a new activation, or $119.99 with a contract extension. T-Mobile sells the G2x for $199.

T-Mobile did not deny that a good chunk of G2x owners were having issues with the phone. Fortunately, a software update is on the way.

“We are working with LG to deliver a software update, which we expect to offer some performance enhancements,” T-Mobile tweeted.

Dell Streak 10 Pro tablet gets Wi-Fi Interoperability Certificate

Section: Computers, Mobile Computers, Hardware

Dell Streak 10 Pro

After learning that Dell’s upcoming 10-inch Android tablet will be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb OS, we just learned that the tablet has recently received a certificate of Wi-Fi interoperability as well. This means that the Dell Streak Pro is confirmed to have Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n feature. I guess we all expect that, right? After all who would release a new tablet without Wi-Fi, unless that manufacturer is releasing a crippled tablet. But aside from this Wi-Fi interoperability, the certification information also kind of confirmed the Dell Streak 10’s final name and that is of course - Dell Streak 10 Pro as stated in the Wi-Fi filing. In case you’ve been eyeing this new Dell Android tablet or you’re not aware at all, said table will sport a 10.1-inch display, 1GHz Tegra 2 dual-core chip, 1GB of RAM, a 5MP back camera, 2MP front-facing camera. Bluetooth 2.1 and of course Wi-Fi. The Dell Streak 10 Pro is still scheduled for a June release.

Gingerbread comes to the 5 inch Dell Streak, unofficially

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Smartphones, Computers, Mobile Computers

Dell Streak

Having initially launched with Android 1.6, the Dell Streak is now able to run Android 2.3, thanks to a hacked ROM known as StreakDroid.  The latest version of StreakDroid, StreakDroid 2.0.0 brings the coveted Android 2.3 (or Gingerbread) to a device that is probably running Android 2.2 (since Dell at least upgraded it from Android 1.6 to 2.2).  The smartphone tablet hybrid sporting a 5 inch screen had launched without much fanfare because of the low OS it ran.  However, Streak owners will definitely be grateful to know that their device can, at least, unofficially run Gingerbread, albeit there are a few bugs that are currently being worked out.

If you are interested in installing StreakDroid 2.0.0 on your Dell Streak, feel free to read the source information below.

Still waiting for your Google Music Beta invite? You may want to check your inbox.

Section: Web, Online Music/Video, Google

While we have seen the I/O attendees and the Xoom users get access to Music Beta fairly quickly, we also had another round of invitations that we watched get sent out a short while back. Fortunately we were included in that group, but for those who may have been overlooked, you may want to check your inbox because from what we have been told—Google has sent out another round of Music Beta invitations. And coming from the account I received I can tell you two things, Google and FiOS made quick work of my nearly 14,000 tracks and I have way more DRM filled tracks than I care to admit from the early iTunes days that did not/can not upload. That and, while I will say that I am not sure how often I will use my Music Beta account because I am fairly attached to Slacker, I really like the setup.

Facebook and Spotify aim to socialize streaming music

Section: Business News, Web, Web 2.0 / Social Networking, Online Music/Video

Spotfiy logo

Facebook has reportedly strengthened its partnership with Spotify. Spotify is a music streaming service that users can access on their PCs, Macs, iOS and Android devices. According to Forbes, a new Spotify music streaming service for Facebook is undergoing internal testing. A release date hasn’t been mentioned. Technically, there hasn’t even been an official announcement. If true, the deal appears to be mutually beneficial for both companies since no cash is involved.

As Forbes points out, Facebook’s partnership with Spotify will give the site another foothold in the world of entertainment. Facebook recently gave users the opportunity to rent Warner Bros. movies using Facebook Credits. With Spotify, Facebook users will be able to use the service for free (although it may be limited) or pay for a premium service. Spotify stands to attract a whole new base of customers once they start listening to music together.

The Facebook Spotify service will stream music onto the social network. It will apparently be prominently displayed on the left of the Facebook News Feed. Friends will also be able to listen to music together at the same time.

United States Facebook users should also get access to Spotify on Facebook eventually. Spotify just has to work out all the details with record labels.
