Section: Communications, Mobile, Computers, Mobile Computers, Laptops There have been several rumors about Dell’s bigger Android tablet for quite some time now. Specifically, several people are have reported that it won’t be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb. But then, this latest report from Dutch site Tweakers.net has just disproven that and said that the Dell Streak Pro will after all be loaded with Android 3.0 Honeycomb. The report also mentioned some more juicy details about the Dell Streak Pro. These details include a 1GHz Tegra 2 dual-core chip, 1GB of RAM, a 5MP back camera, 2MP front-facing camera, and the usual tablet goodies such as Wi-Fi b/g/n, Bluetooth 2.1 and a possible support for AT&T 4G LTE. For storage, the Dell Streak Pro will be available with either 16GB, 32GB or 64GB flash storage complemented by an SDHC memory card reader. Said tablet will be able with black, red, blue or pink skins and sports an aluminum back panel. Expect the Dell Streak Pro to hit the market come June 2011. For a good example of this, look at Netflix. Netflix currently accounts for almost 30 percent of downstream internet traffic in the United States. Netflix can be viewed on a computer, phone, tablet, game console, Blu-ray player, Roku and it’s even built into some televisions. Services such as Netflix helped create the idea of cable cord-cutting. That means that more people are cancelling their cable television service in favor of video services the internet has to offer. I’ve personally cut the cord several months ago. My video consumption consists of Netflix, Hulu, YouTube and a variety of sites that post their programs to the web. My television also scans the airwaves for digital network television channels such as Fox, ABC, NBC, CBS etc. So far, I’ve been happy with the switch and I’m not the only person who has done this. The supposed downside to this internet video revolution is that cable companies will suffer due to the lack of cable subscriptions. However, that doesn’t mean it isn’t making up for that loss elsewhere. Leichtman Research Group conducted a study and found that the 19 largest cable and telephone companies in the United States gained approximately 1.3 million new high speed internet subscribers in the first quarter of 2011. Of the estimated 76.6 million customers with high speed internet access, cable companies account for 42.6 million of them. Cable companies service over 55% of broadband internet subscribers. So while cable cord-cutting is real, cable companies continue to supply homes with high speed internet. Comcast, the largest broadband internet supplier in the country, added 418,000 new customers in the first quarter of 2011. Comcast hasn’t seen numbers that high since 2008. The irony is that even though you may think you’ve cut the cord, the cable companies just have you wrapped around another cord instead. In fact, the company is “ramping production every week to address the supply concerns, including almost daily air shipments into North America.” So, Asus really wants to make sure that everyone that wants to convertible tablet is able to actually get their hands on one. PayPal will be bringing its Mobile Check Capture feature to Android in an update today. This feature has been present in the iPhone PayPal app and it has proven to be quite popular. MobileCrunch reports that PayPal has seen about $1 million in checks deposited this way. Mobile Check Capture requires the user to take a picture of the front and back of a check. PayPal then deposits the amount on the check into your PayPal account. This is great news for those who frequently use PayPal as a way to manage a portion of their finances. It also takes away the hassle of depositing a check into a bank account before transferring that amount to PayPal. The update will also allow you to save the PayPal application to your phone’s SD card. With the amount on storage phones have these days, you’ll only save a tiny bit of space. Still, it’s nice to have this option. Applications for banks such as Chase also offer a similar check capturing feature. Actually, nothing much has been changed on this device except for the fact that it now supports all versions of the iPhone 4. So whether you own the AT&T or Verizon iPhone 4, you can now purchase the Mophie Juice Pack Plus and it should work nicely. In case you’re not aware - the Mophie Juice Pack is a very useful iPhone 4 accessory that more than doubles the usage time of you iPhone while at the same time serving up as a protective case for your phone. I was able to play around with the Mophie Juice Pack for the iPhone 4 before and I would have to say that one thing you’ll appreciate with it is that it does not add too much bulk to your iPhone 4. This was my issue before with the Mophie Juice Pack Air for my iPhone 3GS. I could not stand holding it for a long time because it made my iPhone too bulky so I had to let go of it. It’s a good thing that Mophie realized how much effort Apple has exerted to make the iPhone 4 as slim as possible so they’ve made the Mophie Juice Pack Plus as thin as possible as well. So, if you find yourself looking for your iPhone 4’s battery charger often, you definitely need the Mophie Juice Pack Plus for iPhone 4. It will cost you $99.99. Trouble is the page used for resetting your password has been hacked. There is some good news, however. The good news is that Sony has taken down the password reset pages for now. While the pages were still up, hackers were able to reset passwords for anyone’s account by using information they obtained in the initial attacks. With just and email address and date of birth the hackers were able to reset your password, effectively locking you out of your own PSN or Qriosity account. Fortunately, you don’t need to just wonder if your account’s password has been changed in this manner. If you get an email stating that your password was changed, and you know you didn’t do it, then you know you’re affected. That email should have a way to contact Sony to fix the problem. That should work, assuming it isn’t being inundated with requests. Sony’s new security can’t come soon enough. Being worried about the safety of PSN accounts is getting tiresome. It looks like HP is doing just that by sending TouchPads to key developers before the rest of us even have a release date for the WebOS tablet. The information comes from a tweet by Mark Gurman which you see above. We don’t know how many of the tablets HP has issued to developers, but we can hope it’s a number large enough to have a well-rounded selection of apps upon release. If there’s anything we learned from recent tablet launches it’s that you need a good selection of apps, and at least a few that people actually want to use. June seems to be the presumed launch for the HP TouchPad, but we still don’t know exactly. It’ll be nice for users to actually get their hands on the device as soon as possible, before we start seeing the rumored Amazon tablets, at least. Plus, a June release would give the “key developers” only a few weeks head-start on the other developers who might be interested in making apps for the WebOS tablet. Today we find two new options from the company that remove the need for Apple’s Smart Cover, the Kickstand and Popup. Both provide total body protection to the tablet but like Apple’s own Smart Cover, they provide better ways to use your iPad. The Kickstand provides an upright viewing angle as well as a lower typing-friendly angle of iPad support. The outside is made of a protective nylon fabric while inside, molded plastic edges secure the iPad in place. A liner of faux fur treats the iPad to a luxurious experience. The Kickstand will set you back $49 and is available in three colors. The Popup is a semi-rigid case that features a protective nylon fabric on the outside and the same faux fur on the inside found in the Kickstand. The Popup offers a creative gap and bend of the cover to provide a handsfree upright viewing angle for the iPad. Timbuk2 says the semi-rigid case provides a nice wrist rest for typing when the iPad is being held upright. Price is $39.99 and is available now in 4 color options At first glance, it would seem Timbuk2 hit the high price of the scale as compared to the simple $22 Envelope Sleeve. However, if you compare the price of a Smart Cover plus some kind of sleeve to protect the corners and back, then Timbuk2 is not only competitive but darn right attractive. Some of the other models include the Eee Pad Transformer from Asus and the Iconia Tab A500 from Acer—and the good news is that they can both expect Android 3.1 to arrive sometime early next month. And sadly, so far nothing solid as to when those with an LG G-Slate can expect to receive the latest iteration of Honeycomb. But on the bright side, it is rather refreshing to see the Asus and Acer models getting an update so quickly. As you all know, Apple has already updated the MacBook Pro and iMacs with Sandy Bridge Processors and Thunderbolt ports so it just about time that we all ask when the MacBook Air are going to get the update. And Digitimes just spilled the beans reporting that the Taiwan-based supply chain for Apple products will start shipping new 11.6-inch and 13.3-inch MacBook Air models sometime later this month. This is in time for the shipment of those new MacBook Airs between June and July. The report was also quick to indicate that this news was neither confirmed nor denied by Apple’s PR representative in Taiwan. But then again, Apple has this habit of denying us of the official announcement until a product is ready for official showing, right? Additional information though was gathered and mentioned about main supply chain makers for the new MacBook Air being the same as the manufacturers of the current MacBook Air models. The reason for the delay is what made this story so upsetting. Vodafone said that it suffered a security breach and all of its Xperia Play smartphones were stolen. Vodafone has now admitted that it made the whole thing up as a way to drum up business. Vodafone told The Australian the story about the theft was created for marketing purposes. Vodafone also took it one step further by releasing a short video of the fake theft in action. Here is the video in question. Vodafone is not expressing any regret for essentially lying to the public either. On its Twitter page, Vodafone New Zealand is using the stunt to promote a Facebook game that is coming out on May 19. It’s promising to give away six Xperia Play smartphones and a $5000 credit to the person who can find the stolen phones. In a response to a Twitter user who questioned why Vodafone continues to push this “failed” marketing stunt, Vodafone replied,“Who said it failed, you’re taking about it… ^ME” It’s understandable for a company to use untraditional promotions, but this wasn’t done in good taste. Vodafone knew news sites and blogs would pick up on this. With all the stories about corporate break-ins and theft going around, this is coming off like a cheap cash-in. I’m sure the various outlets that reported this story as fact are also upset that Vodafone essentially duped them into participating in the scheme. We’ll see what backlash, if any, Vodafone may experience from all of this. Instead of walking to the register and being forced to interact with a human being for 30 seconds, customers will have the option of using a touchscreen ordering terminal. These terminals are destined to appear in 7,000 McDonald’s restaurants across Europe. Is the United States in for a similar fate? That’s what we wanted to find out. We asked the Director of U.S. Communications for McDonald’s, Danya Proud, if McDonald’s was considering bringing this technology stateside. “While we have looked at this in the past, we are not currently testing this in the U.S,” Proud wrote in an email. The big concern here is obviously jobs. It may not be glamorous, but a lot of people depend on jobs at McDonald’s to get by. By bringing in these terminals, jobs will almost definitely be lost. Most of the job positions McDonald’s has will probably remain safe. However, if only two positions were lost in each restaurant, that still means 14,000 people will be let go in the end. McDonald’s may not be using the U.S. as a testing ground for these ordering terminals right now, but who knows what will change down the line.
