Section: Video, Content, Video Providers Time Warner Cable is having some trouble with delivering content to its subscribers with its iPad app. It seems that programmers aren’t exactly happy with having their content on more than just TV screens without getting more money. Because of complaints, Time Warner Cable is removing channels from Viacom, Fox and Discovery from the TWCable TV iPad app. In their place, TWC will put channels from “enlightened programmers” who embrace the idea of having their programming being more available. Looking through the new screenshots from the app, those channels will mostly be from BBC America. The channels that will be removed include: - Animal Planet
- BET
- CMT
- Comedy Central
- Discovery Channel
- FX
- MTV
National Geographic - Nickelodeon
- Spike
- VH1
This situation will likely be brought to a court of some sort in the future, Time Warner Cable believes it already has the license to broadcast the stations to any screen within the home, as long as it doesn’t leave the home. Cablevision is planning on launching a similar app in the near future, so TWC isn’t the only one. Expect to hear quite a bit more on this issue as the companies continue to fight. Well, if you’re in Canada you’re in luck. Rogers has just announced that both smartphones will be available in stores between April 19 and April 21. Both phones will run $99.99 on contract. That’s a 3-year contract with a minimum of $45 Voice and Data Share Plan. According to the leaked image that shows the price and release, the phones will also be available for pre-order online, probably soon. Pre-ordering either device will apparently also enter you into a drawing to win a trip to a Major League Gaming event in Orlando, Florida. Probably best for those who plan on buying the Play. Both should be great phones, and well worth the $99.99, if you’re okay with 3-year contracts. Now if only we can get some official release dates and pricing in the US. Google went out of its way to create an elaborate April Fool’s Day prank. The funny thing is, it isn’t so outrageous considering where technology is now. The service in question is called Gmail Motion. It uses a computer’s web camera to perform actions in Gmail. To be fair, motion controlled email isn’t as ridiculous as it sounds. We’ve seen the kinds of applications that were created with Microsoft’s Kinect, so that kind of functionality with email may surface eventually. For now, Google was just joking around as evidenced in its new video. In a world where lies and pranks don’t exist, Gmail Motion uses a spatial tracking algorithm to determine what motions you’re making. Want to reply to a message? Point backwards with your thumb. Want to send a message? Just pretend like you’re licking a stamp and putting it down. Google even created a PDF document of Gmail Motion gestures. Here’s a sample of them. If you try to actually use Gmail Motion, you’ll be greeted with an April Fools message. The Onion Tablet app is pretty basic, it’s all the same content you’d find on the website in a fancy new app. Stories are displayed in an Instapaper-esque format with just the pictures and text in the middle of the screen, though there is a banner ad at the bottom of the screen. You can then share those stories with friends on Twitter, Facebook, Tumblr and Google Reader, or you can save them to Instapaper or Pinboard for reading later. Of course you also get all the images and video you’d expect from The Onion in convenient HTML5. The app is pretty great, and better than using the website. It does run a bit slow on the iPad 1, though, Swiping through stories can be unresponsive, I’ve had a few instances where I had to swipe three or four times before it moved on to the next story. Thankfully there’s a sidebar for selecting stories if swiping doesn’t work. Still, the content is great, and some of the sluggishness could be alleviated with an iPad 2, or with an update to the app. Read [The Onion Tablet App Store link] Full Story » | Written by Shawn Ingram for Gadgetell. | Comment on this Article » Section: Business News, Communications, Smartphones Near-field-communication technology has become a hot topic lately. This technology can be implemented into phones to create a digital wallet. Instead of using cash or whipping out the plastic, customers could wave their phones in front of a scanner in the checkout line to complete transactions. Funds are automatically deducted from their account, and it only takes a second. Since we’re always walking around with phone in-hand anyway, NFC-based payments can be very convenient. Google and Apple are believed to be working on NFC software for their mobile operating systems and now Amazon has joined the fray. Bloomberg reports that sources familiar with the matter revealed details to them. The Amazon Payments division of the company is allegedly thinking about creating a NFC service. Amazon is already an expert in digital retail and wants to expand its reach into physical stores by way of mobile payments. A few days ago, Google was rumored to also be developing an application that would allow Citigroup and Mastercard card carriers to make payments using their phones. That technology is said to be early in development. Apple is also believed to be working on this too. Amazon is doing things that is putting the company in direct competition with Google and Apple. Amazon released its Cloud Drive and Cloud Player before Google and Apple could release their cloud services. Amazon is also getting positive reception for its Amazon Appstore. If mobile commerce really is the future, Amazon will be right up there with software and hardware giants. - Why: Because despite what some may think, renting music (a subscription music service) is a great idea for those who listen often.
- Where: Rdio is available on the web, by way of a desktop Mac app, Roku, Sonos and on mobile devices to include the iPhone and iPod touch as well as Android, the BlackBerry and Windows Phone 7.
- Buy: $4.99 per month for Rdio Web or $9.99 per month for Rdio Unlimited
- Bottom line: read on to find out more in this respect
What: In short, Rdio is a subscription music service that lets you stream and/or download an unlimited amount of music. But otherwise, the crew over at Rdio describe it as being a social music service. And for those wondering about the name; The name, Rdio, is a combination of the words radio and audio, and we pronounce itar-dee-o. Why: Personally, the why for me is rather simple—I listen to music all day long and love to always listen to the newest albums as they come available. Yes, I realize I probably dated myself a bit there, but while I like shuffle, random and playlists—I still like to queue up an entire album and listen from beginning to end. That aside though, my pockets do not like it quite as much when I want always listen to all of the new releases. Given those two combined (love of music and liking to keep my money), the few bucks that I spend each month for Rdio is well worth it. Basically, you can create an account with Rdio and then begin to listen. Rdio is relatively new and there are some limitations, for example, you cannot yet add an entire album to a playlist. But small quirks aside, Rdio does allow you to add as much music as you desire to your collection. And then from there you can adds tracks and/or albums to a queue and begin listening. Furthermore, you can create playlists and even choose to play a (25, 50, 75 or 100 song) radio station based on your collection. Another great feature is the recommendations, a nice way to discover new music and one that has gotten me sucked in for longer than I care to admit. And plus, given its a subscription service, you can listen and not feel obligated to like. After all, you are paying the subscription fee regardless. Moving on, the browser and desktop Mac experience are nice, but where Rdio truly shines for me is in mobile. I am using it on the iPhone and love that you can stream the music or choose to sync it to the device for offline playback. Plus, the offline playback mode, while it uses up device storage—is nicer on the device in terms of battery life. That said, the one complaint I have at this point—I want to see an iPad friendly app. And maybe something for webOS, but I would hate to get greedy with requests. Where: As mentioned above, Rdio is available in the browser as well as a desktop Mac app and there was mention of a Windows app coming “soon.” In addition, Rdio can be found on Roku set top boxes as well as with Sonos. And who can forget the mobile devices which include iOS, Android, Windows Phone 7 and BlackBerry. Buy: Rdio has two subscription options available—$4.99 or $9.99 per month. The lower priced option is the Rdio Web plan and allows for unlimited use on the web. The higher priced option includes unlimited use on the web as well as unlimited mobile use and mobile syncing. And for those wondering, the $9.99 per month plan is the one you will need in order to use your Rdio account on your Roku or Sonos. Bottom line: Having been a long time fan and supporter of subscription based music services—this is a great service to see come available. In short, I love subscription music and so far Rdio seems to be the best going given its fair price, ease of use and ability to use across the web and multiple platforms. The service is called Home Premiere and it offers movie rentals for films that have been in theaters for two months. Each movie will cost $30 to rent for 48 to 72 hours. This VOD service is meant to grab customers who would have missed new movies as soon as they were released in theaters. DirecTV will launch the service to all of its customers first. Comcast will roll out Home Premiere in select cities before making the service national. Among the films that will be around for the launch of Home Premiere are Just Go With It starring Adam Sandler and Unknown starring Liam Neeson. You may be wondering why anyone will pay $30 to rent one movie two months after it’s released in theaters. I believe Home Premiere is best used as an alternative to traditional movie going that involves at least two people. In my city, two movie tickets for adults costs around $20 total. If I planned to buy popcorn and a drink, the total price for the night rises to over $30. In some places, paying for parking is also a factor in determining the cost in going to a theater. At the same time, some movies make it to the $1 theaters within two months. Home Premiere can also be used for movie nights among a group of people. If three people put in $10 each, they’ll be spending less than they would at a theater. Plus, the food will be free. Movie theater owners aren’t too happy about Home Premiere because they feel it could irreversibly alter how people view theaters. The National Association of Theater Owners also believes piracy could increase because of Home Premiere. It also feels this puts more pressure on movies to make more money in a shorter period of time.
