Tissot Seastar 1000 Watch Hands-On

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 05:28 AM PDT

Everyone has been eagerly anticipating the new Seastar 1000 watch from Tissot this year. It has good looks and a large 48mm wide that is big, but not overpowering due to the shorter lugs. For those highly intimidated by the size, there is also a smaller three-hand version that is maybe 44mm wide or smaller. The color selection is interesting, and these could be the Tissot watches to own this year.

Mitsubishi Chemical To Commercialize Printable Solar Cells Next Year

Posted: 06 Apr 2011 04:21 AM PDT

Another small step ahead in solar energy: Mitsubishi Chemical has developed printable solar cells with a conversion rate of 9.2% and now plans to commercialize the cells as early as next year, according to Japanese business daily The Nikkei.

The cells are reportedly 90% lighter than the products currently out there and just “several hundred nanometers” thick. Because they are mainly based on carbon, Mitsubishi expects their cells to eventually cost 90% less than their silicon-based counterparts.

Developed in collaboration with the University of Tokyo, the cells can be attached to a variety of objects, but Mitsubishi is already cooperating with Japanese car makers in order to explore ways to use them for electric cars and hybrids.

By 2015, the company wants to see the 9.2% conversion rate of their cells to grow to 15%.

Leaked Keyboard-less HP Device Said To Be Like “an EVO with webOS”

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 11:39 PM PDT

While Palm’s early marketing efforts and their decision to launch exclusively on Sprint may not have made webOS’s pre-HP life any easier, there’s one thing that just straight up hurt them: the hardware. Be it design issues (the razor sharp lip on the original Pre) or underpowered specs (see: the Pixi), Palm got off to a pretty rough start on the hardware front and nothing they’ve released since has really been enough to get’em past that.

But this… this might just do it.

New Carl Zeiss Lenses Are So Nice, They Come In Their Own Briefcase

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 07:00 PM PDT

Carl Zeiss just announced a bundle of prime lenses for both Canon and Nikon DSLRs. The bundle includes five prime lenses ranging from a 21mm f2.8 to a 85mm f1.4. All the lenses fit conveniently in a waterproof case, custom fitted for the lenses. These would be great for filmmakers and photographers or anyone with a spare $6000 lying around.

New SLR lens set with custom-made suitcase

Attractive offer for filmmakers and filming photographers in entry-level HD video segment

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 05.04.2011. During the NAB Show in Las Vegas from April 9-14, 2011, Carl Zeiss will introduce an attractive bundled lens set offer for its SLR lenses. The set contains the following lenses with F (ZF.2) or EF bayonet (ZE): Distagon T* 2,8/21, Distagon T* 2/28, Distagon T* 2/35, Planar T* 1,4/50 and Planar T* 1,4/85. This offer is a response to the strong demand from the HD Video segment for lenses with precise manual focus. With this offer Carl Zeiss supports filmmakers and still photographers entering the booming HD video market with the right equipment that meets their needs.

"Many production budgets don't justify investing in a set of cinematography lenses right away, like our Compact Prime CP.2 lenses. Our SLR lenses with their precise manual focus are a reasonable alternative for getting started in HD video," said Michael Schiehlen, Director of Sales for the Camera Lens Division of Carl Zeiss AG. Schiehlen stressed the benefit of these lenses for videography over lenses with autofocus. "Our SLR lenses feature an outstanding manual focus mechanism, so the precision when focusing is far higher than with a manually operated auto-focus." In addition, SLR lenses by Carl Zeiss are robust, offer a high aperture speed, and feature an especially harmonious rendering of the bokeh (the out-of-focus area).

The five lenses come in a special waterproof case (IP67), custom-made for this set and feature openings for six lenses. As common for photography lenses, each Carl Zeiss SLR lens has a different size and weight. Therefore a special inlay ensures that each lens fits perfectly inside the suitcase and protects the lenses from shock and vibration. The new SLR lens set will be offered at a recommended retail price of €4562 ($6063), excluding VAT, and will be available starting May.

Ever Wonder What Ansel Adams’ Darkroom Looked Like?

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 06:26 PM PDT

This is an interesting video for anyone who’s ever done black and white photography. I’ve spent my fair share of time in the darkroom, but I wouldn’t say my technique is quite as refined as that of Ansel Adams. Whether you consider his photography wonderful or staid, timeless or out of date, you have to admit that he was a master of the process. This video from Silber Studios shows off his personal darkroom and the tools he used to make the prints we’re all so familiar with.

The twist? It’s really not much to look at! That doesn’t surprise me, really. A methodical photographer just needs a clear space, plenty of chemicals, and time. Ansel Adams was certainly methodical. I like that the enlarger is mounted horizontally, so you interact with the photo as it would be shown when it was done. I’ll have to try that if I ever find myself in possession of a darkroom.

Apple Granted Patent For USB/Thunderbolt-Compatible 30-Pin Connector

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 06:10 PM PDT

Apple has just won a patent, which I totally saw coming a mile away, that seemingly allows for their semi-ubiquitous 30-pin connector to support “DisplayPort (dual lane),” which sounds a lot like the Thunderbolt standard so recently added to the Apple stable.

When I wrote that Apple’s head start with the new port was nice but not earth-shattering (a post that had a record number of misinterpretations in the comments), I noted that if they could, they’d standardize all the ports on the side to be one proprietary Apple port. It would simplify their ecosystem and at the same time lock it down. Everybody wins! And now here is a patent that shows a step in this direction: further coalescing different protocols into one mega-connector.

The patent is for a new 30-pin connector that’s compatible with both USB and DisplayPort dual-lane (AKA Thunderbolt, though it’s not referred to by name). The composite video and audio out pins are used to make room for the bandwidth.

Having a single connector for all Apple-related devices is the natural endgame here, and it’s not so bad if you’re in the Apple ecosystem — though from a broader perspective it’s worrying. At any rate, we can probably expect to see Thunderbolt in iPhone 5 and combined ports in the next generation of MacBooks.

Slow-Motion Segway Joust Break

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 05:30 PM PDT

Take one minute out of your life to watch these two grizzled warriors in a truly epic clash of the Segways. Yeah, I’d probably do that too if I won the lottery.

The rainy bits were shot on a Phantom, by the way. I know how you guys love those.

Sequel Power! Buy Dragon Age 2, Get Mass Effect 2 Free

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 04:44 PM PDT

Either Bioware is just overflowing with love for gamers, or Dragon Age 2 sales are slowing. Maybe a little of both. Whatever the case is, it’s a good deal for consumers: if you bought Dragon Age 2 or buy it before April 30th, you get a free copy of Mass Effect 2. That’s it!

Already own Mass Effect 2? Give it to a friend! Oh wait, you can’t, because this new copy is tied to your EA account. More info over at Bioware.

Apple To Show Off New Final Cut On April 12th?

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 04:35 PM PDT

An upcoming Final Cut Pro-related event has been taken over by Apple, creating speculation that the new version of Final Cut, which we’ve heard is in the works, might make its big debut there. Canon and Avid have both had their presentation times nixed, reportedly so Apple can monopolize the stage.

It’s a logical conclusion. And it’d be nice to see Apple debut something big at such a user-dominated venue.

Video: The Last Unboxing Video You Should Ever Watch

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 02:30 PM PDT

Watch this unboxing video by CoolGearReviews.com and put that fad behind you. Not only will you never see one as entertaining as this one, the whole concept is dumb. (Yes, I knew we’ve done them in the past) The video is just under three minutes long but $10 says you’ll watch the whole thing and smile the entire time. The video that good and it’s just an unboxing of some random projector.

Get Your Wordstar On With These “Abandon Wear” Shirts

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 02:00 PM PDT

If you lived through the 80s, you’ll probably want to check out this line of shirts. I mean, there’s no shortage of logo or retro T-shirts, but how often is it you see an Accolade one, or NeXT?

I kind of wish this “Abandon Wear” line had a little more of the actual Abandonware I love so much: X-COM, Syndicate, Captain Keen, Blake Stone… all the gems from the 80s and early 90s. There’s no shortage of great logos and graphics there. But! This Abandon Wear is more focused on companies from that era: Compuserve, Aldus, Tandy… you may have forgotten them briefly, but you’ll remember them all right.

My favorites? NeXT is pretty sweet, Wordstar is looking good (but why “creme”?), Accolade of course, Delphine will get you some high fives, and this BASF floppy graphic is great.

All the shirts are $25, printed using the RedBubble shirt printing service, on American Apparel Tees. Anything less would be uncivilized.

A-97 Knockoff Tablet Dual-Boots Windows 7 And Android 2.2

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 01:30 PM PDT

Do you want a tablet that has not one, but two OSes not designed for tablets? There are a couple choices out there, but the A-97 has to be the most anonymous. It’s like a debranded iPad with netbook guts, able to switch between Windows 7 and Android 2.2 with the greatest of ease. I mean, you have to restart it and everything, but still. That’s pretty easy.

It’s got a Z530 1.6GHz Atom, a gig of RAM, and 16GB of SSD storage. The 9.7″ 1024×768 LED-backlit IPS display is from LG and may in fact be the same one as the iPad. Visually it’s a pretty decent copy of that particular tablet, but I get the feeling it’s not quite the same user experience. Wake me up when they dual boot Chrome and Android 3.1.

Microsoft’s New Xbox 360 Dev Kits ‘Significantly’ Cheaper

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 01:00 PM PDT

Flickr’d

It’s now quite a bit cheaper to develop Xbox 360 games. Then again, you could probably develop for any new Android phone and be dealing with more powerful hardware, but that’s for another day. Microsoft has developed a new Xbox 360 development kit that’s smaller than the previous kit and has more memory and hard drive space.

Microsoft, without listing a price, pegs the new dev kit at a "significantly reduced price from its predecessor." It’s partially down to the addition of the fancy new Sidecar, which lets developers develop without having to buy separate kits.

The new kit will initially be available to people with existing deals—rumor has it that the kits initially cost $10,000, but that’s not exactly public knowledge—before moving onto new customers, if you will.

This story was a lot more interesting when I first noticed it, sorry.

The XM25: A Future Weapon Killing Bad Guys Right Now

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 12:30 PM PDT

Come get some! The XM25 is bringing a world of hurt to Afgan baddies right now. The Army is apparently field testing the (ready for the street name?) Punisher in very limited numbers right now. You must click through to see the very first demo of the weapon in action. It shows the fancy targeting system that guides the 25mm burst rounds to their targets, which then penetrates barriers to explode behind enemy combatants. DefenseTech states the Army just signed a $65 million check to ATK for a bunch of XM-25s at an estimated price of $25,000 each. Who says America doesn’t make anything cool anymore?

The Binary Low Table Looks Like A Borg Starship

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 12:00 PM PDT

Rather than throwing a bunch of toxic, sharp computer parts into the landfill, BRC designs did what any green design firm would do: make a coffee table. The frame of the table was made from the computer towers, bent to form the basic structure. From there, computer parts were placed one-by-one onto the structure until completely covered.

The parts include everything from motherboards, computer chips, LED displays and hard drives. All the parts are held together with sheet metal screws. Even the glass from the table was salvaged from the warehouse.

Chinese Send Paper iPads, TVs To The Afterlife

Posted: 05 Apr 2011 11:31 AM PDT

It’s Qingming Festival time again, a day when Chinese honor the dead by sending them papercraft gifts to beyond the grave. This year, the dead are enjoying iPads 2 and big screen televisions alongside more traditional traditional gifts.

Each “high-tech” gift costs about $2 and they are burned during the festival along with other items the dead may need including money, shoes, and food. They also send along little paper houses and nice suits for dressing up for an endless night on the town.

As demonstrated above, we can assume the dead aren’t very savvy when it comes to versions of iOS, which means they won’t mind that their paper iPads are running some wild hybrid of Android, OS X, and whatever the heck else is going on there. I suppose it’s just nice getting something after going to your eternal rest.
