Section: Communications, Cellular Providers, Broadband Cards, Mobile As expected, T-Mobile has announced that starting tomorrow you’ll be able to finally get a 4G mobile hotspot on the network. The pocketable T-Mobile 4G Mobile Hotspot will be available in stores and online for $79.99. As you’d expect from T-Mobile, that $79.99 is only after a $50 mail-in rebate. that price also comes with a two-year contract for the device. With the device you’ll be able to connect up to five devices with WiFi to T-Mobile’s network. Unfortunately the ZTE-made device will only work on T-Mobile’s 21 Mbps HSPA+ network and not the 42 Mbps network that’s being rolled out to select cities now. Hopefully we can have a mobile hotspot that takes advantage of those speeds sometime soon. The official announcement comes right after two European retailers Clove and Carphone Warehouse started accepting pre-orders for the said Android tablet, despite the lack of official announcement as to the exact release date. But now, if you’ve been eyeing to get the HTC Flyer, you can now rest easy that if you place your order, you are almost assured that you’ll get your unit at a definite date, barring of course any other circumstances that would prevent HTC from releasing the HTC Flyer on the said date. Now, here’s the more suprising news, if you’ve read our previous coverage, we said that the HTC Flyer was not going to run on Android 3.0 Honeycomb. If you’re planning to get a new Android tablet or a smartphone and you’re interested with how cool the HTC Sense UI actually plays, you might as well get the HTC Flyer or the HTC Sensation 4G which will be the first HTC devices to run HTC Sense 3.0. Anyway, the HTC Sense 3.0 features 3D animations, a new notification bar and an improved lock screen. In addition, you’ll be able to view weather forecasts, messages, photos, and other information even if your HTC smartphone is in lock state. You can also launch apps in the said screen, without needing to unlock your device first. Now, if you’re not planning to get the HTC Flyer or the HTC Sensation 4G and would rather retain your current HTC smartphone, chances are this new UI will be available for older HTC smartphones courtesy of some intelligent modders and hackers. The company has announced that you can now get the Kindle for $25 less if you’re willing to put with ads on your screensaver and home screen. There are some reasons why you’d want the ads aside from just the lower price, though. The full name for the least expensive Kindles is now Kindle with Special Features. On that Kindle you’ll see ads on your screensaver, as well as your homescreen. Where you won’t find ads is in the actual reading experience. Amazon doesn’t want to interrupt your reading, it just wants to give your special offers on your homescreen and screensaver. Those offers include $20 Amazon.com gift cards for $10, $1 Amazon MP3 albums (remember, buying MP3 albums increases you Cloud Drive space), and even 6 Audible books for $6. That last one is pretty incredible, assuming you get to choose which books you get, it’s a pretty massive savings compared to even Audible subscriptions. Otherwise, the consumer-focused division will be closed and nothing more will come out of it. It is certainly a sad day for those who are fans of small camcorders, though there’s no lack of other devices out there to fill in the gap. With many of us using smartphones to record video now, the days of Flip have always been numbered for a large part of the market. There are still those who could find good use for the Flip Video Camera, but apparently it wasn’t enough for Cisco to justify the continuation of the brand. Counterfeit products have invaded our retail landscape and are not just reserved to handbags and designer knock off dresses. Industry experts put the fakes in our product supply at 1 in 5 in electronics sector alone. That’s right, take a look around your desk and pick out five things; one is likely fake. Have you been duped? The answer is likely yes. Before you beat yourself up about it, consider this: so was the US Government. A 2010 report by the Department of Commerce found 39 percent of electronics companies contracted by the DoD encountered counterfeit electronics from subcontractors. Those were parts headed into weapons and support systems that were knock-offs. A failure in a jet fighters central nervous system or in troops gear on the ground could quickly turn fatal. How could experts be duped? Countfeit’s Perfect Storm What happens when demand for gadgets meets a global recession? The answer is counterfeit proliferation. Estimates now place counterfeiting internationally at $600 billion, of that a full 1/3rd is generated in the US. What’s more, the rise of the internet is providing the life-blood for counterfeits. Gone is the shady man in the trench coat on the city corner selling watches (OK, he’s still there, but now he’s more likely to have fake iPods, ear phones and phones). In his place are eBay, craigslist, shifting websites An investment of time is no longer needed by those wishing to prosper selling counterfeit goods. The barrier to entry is almost nil, and consumers are not helping. Price Waterhouse in the UK reports that 1 in 3 consumers are willing to buy counterfeit products. It’s a shallow view at what consumers are willing to accept: trading performance, enjoyment, safety for a few bucks. As consumers, we seem to be asking for more counterfeiting. Who will protect us from ourselves? Goverment’s response - we’re a tad busy over here There are laws on the books designed to protect consumers from fraudulent goods, why not enforce them? In the US, the Department of Homeland Security has a rather large focus. For the greatest public good, the Department’s priorities must be security. Things like searching for illegal weapons, drugs, human trafficking. In the grand scheme of things, what’s worse: a fake iPod or fake Viagra or other ingestible? It’s no wonder counterfeiting has exploded. According to the LA Times, seizures are up 35% in one year (2009 to 2010). “Customs officials acknowledge that they are struggling to intercept the vast quantities of illegal goods that make their way into the ports each day, hidden among legitimate shipments of clothing, auto parts and housewares.” With over $1 billion passing through Long Beach and LA ports, it’s the front line for electronic counterfeiting. With so much product coming from China, finding the fakes becomes a hunt for the needle in a haystack, only that haystack is moving quickly. One might think China could help us on this? China faces similar issues with capacity for inspections. Only their incentive is a mix of a desire to build a good name for China-made products and keeping China working. Gadgetell spoke with several companies, each saying while their Chinese counterparts were cooperating in helping solve the counterfeit problem a common theme was “there’s a reason China is the counterfeit capital of the world.” Companies take a stand With limited help from governments, what’s a company to do? The bigger the company is, the more likely a target they become for counterfeiting. From Apple to Monster, big companies with hit products have to face the issue. Several of these companies have created departments specifically tasked with dealing with fake products. For some companies, the problem is a serious dilemma: how much do you spend chasing counterfeits? Companies may have patent, trademark and/or copyright law on their side, but locating the criminals may be even harder than earning those protections. Websites and online sellers quickly become ghosts. With consumer demand for knock-off products, cutting off the head of one distribution ring, could easily spur several more to grow. What’s a consumer to do? Can you spot the fake? Can you tell the difference between a being lucky with a seller on eBay and someone just pushing counterfeit product? How can you tell? How can retail stores tell? Tomorrow we’ll dig in deep and see how easy it is to get taken. We’ll take a look at one popular, authentic product and one ordered directly and covertly from a site known to sell counterfeit. Will you be able to tell the difference? Get your suspicious mind ready to combat some of the most convincing and innovative counterfeiting going today. You may not believe your eyes. Microsoft revealed Internet Explorer 10 at the MIX11 conference today. Don’t leap out of your seat in outrage because it’ll take some time before IE 10 is released as a full product. However, you can download the Internet Explorer 10 Preview at this very moment. IE 10 will continue to build upon Microsoft’s commitment to HTML5. The IE 10 preview will provide support for things such as CSS3 Gradients and CSS3 Flexible Box Layout. The typical user could care less about this technical stuff. They want to know about changes to things they can relate to like Twitter and graphics. So how can IE 10 alter the Twitter experience? Microsoft showed a demo of this on video. Due to CSS3 multi-column layout support in IE 10, you can add tweets to Tweet Flow across five columns. The tweets continue to flow in real-time. When Microsoft demoed Tweet Flow in Firefox, the tweet boxes were cut off and uneven across three columns. Microsoft also showed a demo of 500 fish swimming in a fish bowl with water in high definition. Different effects were added to the bowl and HTML5 provided the audio. When this was tried in Chrome 11, the fish were moving at a much lower framerate. Give it a try if you’re interested. Just know that the IE 10 preview won’t install on anything lower than Windows 7. Amazon had not secured all the necessary licenses from record companies to make their music a part of Amazon’s new service. Amazon didn’t feel that it needed those licenses before launching Cloud Drive. The questionable legalities of Amazon’s actions is an issue to some, but you can’t argue with results. By cutting through the red tape and beating competition to market, Amazon has seen an increase in MP3 sales. According to Billboard, The Amazon Music Team sent a letter to music labels informing them of Cloud Drive’s success. The letter doesn’t say how many more MP3s were sold, but it does make comments about the licensing issue. Amazon made it clear that licenses are not an issue. “We are not looking for licenses for Cloud Drive or Cloud Player as they exist today—as no licensees are required,” Amazon wrote in the letter. Amazon likens its Cloud Drive to an external hard drive. There’s no need to secure rights to backup data on a store-bought external hard drive. Amazon views its Cloud Drive as a big external hard drive in the sky. The Cloud Player is seen as an application that plays media just like Windows Media Player, QuickTime or any other similar program. However, Amazon has not given up on licenses entirely. In the future, Amazon is looking to update the Cloud Drive and Cloud Player with features that require licenses.
