Official Moleskine iOS app is now available

Moleskine for iOS

Last week we told you that an official Moleskine app was making it’s way to iOS. Well, the app is finally here to give you all the functionality and some fo the design you’d find in the line of notebooks. The best part is, unlike the notebooks which can be a bit expensive given their size, the app is free.

Moleskine for iOS is essentially juts a note-taking app with some with some added features and designs. The first screen you get looks like the cover of a Moleskine notebook, and your pages have the option of being plain, ruled or graph, just like the notebooks. Of course you’ll get to the out your notes on the iPhone, iPod touch, or iPad, but you also have the option to sketch out idea on the virtual paper. If you need images i your notes, you can do that, too. Once your done with the notes, you can geotag them to find your ideas by location later.

Unfortunately there are a few issues with the app as it stands at the moment. First, there is no way to use it in landscape mode. That’s not a huge deal on the iPhone (for me, at least), but typing in portrait on the iPad is just an exercise in frustration. The sketching could also be improved a bit. Once you take your finger off the screen, the app changes your lines a bit, making them smoother, but perhaps taking away some detail you wanted.

Three UK website has mythical white iPhone 4, ready for the inevitable

The white iPhone 4 could finally be upon us sometime soon. Earlier today UK carrier Three had the elusive phone available for order, at least until you actually tried to order one. The phone turned out to be unavailable, but it’s still up there to taunt everyone.

Originally Three had the white iPhone 4 available for the £35 a month The One Plan, which consisted of 2000 minutes, 5000 texts and unlimited data. Now, the white iPhone 4 is listed as being available for all plans that Three offers to UK customers. However, selecting a plan will get you a message saying “White iPhone 4 is currently unavailable for order online or in-store.” But, the fact that the option is there is very promising. Maybe we’ll be able to actually buy the white iPhone 4 before the end of the month.

Motorola Xoom expected to launch on US Cellular in Q2

Section: Video, Video Providers, Communications, Cellular Providers, Computers, Mobile Computers

Motorola Xoom launching on US Cellular

According to an internal screen shot from US Cellular, the regional carrier is expected to launch the Motorola Xoom tablet sometime in Quarter 2.  The text on the screen shot only makes reference to the fact that it operates on Android 3.0, has a 10.1 inch screen, and will launch in Q2.  Therefore, we’re not entirely sure whether it will launch as a WiFi only device or 3G and utilize US Cellular’s regional data service.  Either way, it looks like US Cellular customers will be able to enjoy the Xoom from their regional provider in the near future.  In the coming weeks, US Cellular will probably officially announce the device and announce exact pricing and availability information at that time.

Verizon launches the Novatel MiFi 4510L 4G LTE Mobile Hotspot modem

Section: Communications, Cellphones, Cellular Providers, Mobile, Gadgets / Other

The new Novatel MiFi 4510L 4G LTE modem is officially on sale through Verizon’s online website.  For $99 after a $50 MIR, the Novatel MiFi 4510L and its ability to supply WiFi to five different devices all at once, can be yours.  Starting April 21, the 4G LTE MiFi will be available in all Verizon Wireless retail channels for the same price.  Keep in mind the $99 price tag requires a two year contract of 4G data, with pricing beginning at $50 per month for 5GB of data.

With Verizon’s 4G LTE network, you can expect speeds of 5-12 Mbps down and 2-5 Mbps up.  The battery life is rated at five hours, and considering it supplies WiFi to five different devices at once, I’d say that is a pretty solid battery life.  Lastly, even if you’re not always in a 4G LTE covered area, the Novatel MiFi is backwards compatible with Verizon’s 3G network, meaning you can also use it as a 3G Mobile hotspot device.

This is a $3,500 refrigerator

Section: Business News, Gadgets / Other, Household, Lifestyle

Samsung RF4289 If refrigerators had feelings, they’d be crying ice cubes right now. The Samsung RF4289 is the ultimate fridge for the ultimate price. Starting this May, this refrigerator will be available in stores for $3,499. It comes in 36-inch and 33-inch wide models and has more technology than you ever thought was necessary in a refrigerator.

Let’s be honest here. If this was just a fridge with LED lighting and 28 cubic feet of space, we probably wouldn’t be taking about this. However, the RF4289 has an eight inch LCD touchscreen right above the ice dispenser. Not impressed yet? Well this fridge also has a Wi-Fi connection going into it. The screen is like a built-in tablet by offering apps such as Epicurious, Weather Bug and Twitter. Why anyone will need to check Twitter on their refrigerator is beyond my understanding. The Pandora app makes more sense. There are two speakers built into the fridge which is great for when you’re preparing a dish.

Another neat feature is a new drawer called Flex Zone which lets you divide everything in the drawer. The Flex Zone also has its own temperature controls.

Can you see yourself throwing down $3,500 for this appliance?

Wacom capacitive Bamboo stylus compliments tablets

Section: Business News, Apple, Communications, Accessories

Wacom stylus There was a time when resistive touchscreen devices were pretty commonplace. The problem with resistive screens is the stylus that accompanies them. Operating the device can become tedious if the stylus is ever lost, and multi-touch gestures are contributing to the demise of the stylus. However, Wacom isn’t so quick to abandon the stylus. It has created a stylus specifically for capacitive screens that may have some practical use.

The Wacom Bamboo Stylus is shaped like a normal pen and can work on any tablet with a capacitive screen. The stylus is set to be released in the UK in May for £24.99 (around $40). The stylus is about 4.7 inches long and weighs 20 grams.

The stylus will also work on a few applications that were created specifically for the stylus. According to Recombu, who got hands-on time with the stylus, said one app is art-based. The app was created for the iPad. Another application focused on note taking. The stylus will certainly speed up the process of inputting text.

The Bamboo Stylus is not a means to replace finger operation on tablets, but it can be useful for specific applications.

Philips sells 70 percent of television business

Section: Business News, Video, HDTV

Philips HDTV Philips is dramatically scaling back its television division. Thanks to falling television prices and overall poor performance, Philips will turn over 70 percent of its television business to TPV Technology. TPV Technology is a manufacturer based out of Hong Kong. Philips will continue to own the remaining 30 percent and will collect 50 million euros ($72 million) in royalties every year starting in 2013.

Frans Van Houten, CEO of Philips, believes the company can make up some of its losses by combining “Philips’ innovation power” with TPV’s manufacturing strength. Houten said that this new joint venture will put Philips in a better position to compete with Samsung and Sony.

This deal should be finalized this summer and actual joint operations are expected to begin later in the year.

In the future, Philips will shift its attention to health and wellbeing products. There may also be some acquisitions in Philips’ future. However, Houten did not offer Bloomberg any details on that matter during a video interview. Houten only pointed to the success Philips has had in healthcare, lighting and consumer lifestyle products.

“The portfolio of Philips is much stronger now that we have dealt with television,” Houten said.

But remember, until officially confirmed by Apple and/or the carriers—this is nothing more than a rumor.

2Ghz Samsung smartphone coming in 2012

Section: Business News, Communications, Smartphones

Samsung dual core CPU It’s hard to believe that less than two years ago we were dealing with smartphones with 192MBs of RAM and 528MHz processors. Now we question any new phone that doesn’t have a dual core processor. The rate of how fast smartphone technology is improving is enough to make anyone question purchasing a new device. There’s a reasonable fear that a more powerful model will be released within a few months. We hope you don’t get too attached to your top-of-the-line smartphone because by next year, processing speeds will double once again.

The Maeli Business Newspaper is reporting that Samsung will release a smartphone in 2012 that will have just as much power as a modern PC. This phone will reportedly contain a dual core CPU, with each one pumping out 2GHz of processing power. That means this particular phone could have processing speeds of up to 4GHz. That’s about double the processing speeds of smartphones now.

The report did not mention any other hardware details about the smartphone. However, Samsung is reportedly thinking about selling its new dual core CPU to other smartphone manufacturers. This could make dual core CPUs the new standard in smartphones in 2012.

Jesse Jackson Jr. blames the iPad for job losses

Section: Business News, Audio, Gadgets / Other, ebooks

Jesse Jackson Jr U.S. Representative Jesse Jackson Jr. is sure to receive flak from the tech community over his comments recently linking the loss of American jobs to the success of the iPad. Jackson started off by talking about how the unemployment rate in the United States is hovering around 9 percent, effectively leaving over 13 million Americans without work. We can attribute the massive job losses to a lot of things, but we’d never thought the iPad would be one of those reasons.

The following is an excerpt from Jackson’s speech:

“I happen to believe Mr. Speaker that at some point in time this new device, which is now probably responsible for eliminating thousands of American jobs,” Jackson said. “Now Borders is closing stores because why do you need to go to Borders anymore? Why do you need to go to Barnes & Noble? Buy an iPad and download your book, download your newspaper, download your magazine.”

Jackson believes that because a lot of print media is going digital, publishing companies, bookstores and libraries all risk losing jobs. He also expressed a bit of outrage at the prospect of Chicago State University eliminating textbooks completely in favor of digital books on the iPad. While there’s no doubt that e-books will overtake print eventually, and major textbook publishers are taking a digital approach to conducting business, new technology cannot be blamed for increasing the unemployment rate in the United States.

I suppose Jackson’s solution to this supposed epidemic would be to keep using paper. I would argue that cutting down fewer trees in favor of obtaining information digitally is a good way to go. In fact, some companies actually charge customers more if they want to receive paper bills in the mail. Producing so much paper costs companies money and going digital is simply more cost effective.

We also can’t ignore that emerging technology such as tablets actually benefit the public in crucial ways. The medical industry for example is using iPads to provide visual assistance in ways that weren’t possible before. iPads combined with the power of cloud computing can make medical procedures safer and more understandable to patients. Someone has to create the technology and software to make these things possible. What Jackson should do is focus on improving the quality of education in the US so that its citizens can be qualified to take advantage of new technology. If not, we’ll find ourselves complaining about how most of what we use is being created in other countries.
