Section: Communications, Smartphones, Mobile We recently learned that Nokia and Microsoft have signed off on a joint partnership, but we also know it will be quite some time before any Nokia branded Windows Phone 7 smartphones actually come to market. And just for the record, Nokia has stated that will happen in 2012. That said, Stephen Elop did recently offer a bit of an update and go over a few of things that we can expect to see when this all comes to reality. But the good news, despite not being able to expect a device until 2012, Elop did state that they have "shifted from a mode of developing our strategy to one of putting our strategy into action". And speaking as to some of that action, it was noted that we can expect to see Ovi Maps come to Windows Phone as well as a Nokia-branded application store. And while some will likely question the addition of a second app store for Windows Phone, the Nokia-branded offering will come with some perks such as carrier billing. Furthermore, Elop mentioned that current Nokia developers will have the (normally $99 per year) Windows Phone developer fee waived for the first year. Of course, in the meantime we are still seeing Nokia shipping items such as the Symbian running Astound which recently came available with T-Mobile here in the US. According to the details that we have seen so far, the tablet will be called the Dell Streak Pro and it can be expected to arrive sometime in June 2011. In terms of features, the Streak Pro will be running Android 3.0 Honeycomb with the Dell “Stage 1.5” user interface and have a 10 inch (1280 x 800) WXGA touchscreen display and a NVIDIA Tegra T25 processor. In addition, it was noted that the Streak Pro will be a data only device. In other words, no voice calling like on the smaller Streak 5. Of course, the reminder—these are leaked details and could still change. Sure, there are some tricks that will apparently give you access, but really, people just want to be able to launch the browser type in the address for Hulu and begin watching. That said, there may be a silver lining to this disappointing news—The Wall Street Journal is reporting that RIM and Hulu LLC are currently in talks. “We are in conversations with Hulu to bring the Hulu Plus subscription service to BlackBerry PlayBook users,” said a spokeswoman for RIM in an email. Representatives for Hulu were unavailable for comment. Of course, we should point out the flip side, while they may be in talks at the moment, that does not mean we will see a quick resolution—but we can hope. That said, by that we are referring to the version of Android that the 7c will be running, but more on that in a moment. First things first, the Archos 7c tablet has been priced at $219.99 and seems to almost be ready for sale. At this time Archos has the tablet listed on their store website, however the listing is still showing a “notify me” button as opposed to a add to cart or buy button. And getting back to the version of Android, initially we had heard the 7c was going to launch with Android 2.3, however this listing is still showing as Android 2.1. In other words—an already dated version—especially considering some of the other Archos models are sporting Froyo. That said, we will hope that is a mistake and that it will change when the “notify me” button goes away. Otherwise, the Archos 7c will feature a 7 inch (800 x 480) capacitive touchscreen display, 1.2GHz Rockchip 2918 ARM Cortex-A8 processor, 8GB internal storage, microSD card slot and Wi-Fi 802.11 b/g. And lastly, the Archos tablets do not ship with the Android Market installed, however we will say that there is an active community that usually takes care of that need. This unnamed device is believed to be capable of processing speeds up to 4Ghz, putting it on par with some modern computers. If that was enough to blow your mind, you may want to hold on to your head for this next rumor. Motorola is rumored to be working on two super smartphones as well. According to Droid Life, these phones allegedly have a NVIDIA Tegra 3 quad-core processor. Their code names are the Motorola Bullet and the Motorola Jet. Keep in mind this is merely speculation, but at the rate smartphone technology is improving, it’s certainly not far fetched. Let’s go into more detail about the two phones. The Motorola Jet has a physical keyboard, a 4-inch q-HD screen, 16GB of built-in storage, 1.5GB of DDR2 RAM and a whopping 12 megapixel camera. The Motorola Bullet has mostly the same specs, except it has a 4.3-inch screen, 1GB of DD2 RAM and a NFC chip. Given current Motorola trends, it wouldn’t be unreasonable to assume these phones will run on some version of Android. Hopefully Android 3.0 will be optimized for phones by them. It would make sense given previous iPhones, particularly the jump from 3G to 3GS. Well, now there’s a new possibility of what the next iPhone will look like, and a mock-up of what it could look like. The image you see above comes from This Is My Next (if you don’t know This Is My Next, they’re a group of former Engadget editors, so they know their stuff). It shows an iPhone 5 that looks more like an iPod touch than any current iPhone. It would also have a larger, 3.7-inch screen that goes edge-to-edge with the same 960x640 resolution. It would still be Retina Display because there would still be over 300 pixels per inch. The home screen could also be wider, and double as a “gesture area” meaning we could see some WebOS-like gestures in the next version of iOS. Also included could be inductive charging and something called a “swipe area” that This Is My Next speculates could be NFC. On the inside, this next iPhone would likely include Qualcomm’s Gobi chipset which handles both GSM and CDMA, which would confirm those rumblings of it being a global device. As always, keep in mind these are just rumors, but given where they’re coming from I’d be inclined to believe them. As much as I love the design of the iPhone 4, an iPhone 5 that looks similar to the mocked-up image could be even better, especially if it allows for inductive charging. If Apple does add gestures and NFC to the device it would seem to indicate that the company is trying to be really aggressive with advancing the platform beyond what Google is doing, especially if that cloud music service launches around the same time.
