Section: Communications, Cellphones, Smartphones, Mobile It looks like Palm users in Europe are in the process of getting the latest webOS update. This will bring Pre and Pixi users up to version 1.4.5. As for who has been updated, so far that list is still fairly small—O2 customers in Germany. Otherwise it appears as of O2 users in the UK and Bell users in Canada are now in the process. That said, we here in the US are still waiting for the good word. As of now nothing has been mentioned in regards to Sprint, Verizon or AT&T. Though if I had to offer a guess I would think that AT&T is going to be last to offer this update. Either way though, lets hope webOS 1.4.5 hits the US market soon. According to a “person familiar with the matter,” Apple’s senior antenna expert approached Steve Jobs that the antenna could cause reception problems and dropped calls. This conversation took place in the early design phase of the iPhone 4, meaning it was early enough for Apple to change and remedy the issue. The Apple antenna expert is Ruben Caballero, and he approached Jobs along with a partner carrier about possible antenna problems before the launch. Unfortunately the person revealing this information asked to remain anonymous, so we don’t know how close he/she is with Apple. Meanwhile, Steve Dowling, a spokesman for Apple, refused to comment on the issue and would not allow Caballero give an interview or answer any questions. It will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow and whether Apple will address this assertion or not. But now, All Things Digital is reporting that this Android tablet has been delayed at least until early next year. There could be multiple reasons for the delay. The most obvious to me is that HP wants to shift their resources to get their recent purchase of WebOS on a tablet device. Regardless of the reason, however, I am disappointed we will not be seeing this device until next year. Of all companies, HP has the resources and teams that could put together one amazing device. The application is said to do just about anything the web-based Bing can do whether it be web search, images, maps, news, or shopping. With Bing trailing behind Google’s 62.6% market-share on search, it is doing what it needs to do to bring itself into the running with Google. An easily navigable mobile-search application would definitely bring in some extra searches. And while Google may have the convenience factor on their side, they are far from perfect, and if Bing exploits Google’s flaws, there is no doubt that it will start seeing an increase in queries. For instance, I prefer Bing’s shopping and travel abilities much more than Google’s. I like to say that there are some places where you need simplicity and some places where you need a little something extra. Bing is that something extra in terms of travel and shopping. So if I need flight descriptions on the fly (pun unintended), I can almost guarantee that Bing would provide me with just the information I need in a much cleaner and enriched form than Google will. The Bing Android application is said to be coming within the next 6 weeks, but keep your eyes open for a closer launch date. Read [Yahoo! The Verizon representative said they have "not determined a date yet for the launch” and the likely release date is "late summer or early fall." With the Motorola Droid 2 expected to land August 23, I suppose the Fascinate could launch in September, but chances are we will see Verizon’s flavor of the Samsung Galaxy S launch in early fall. Moving the Samsung Fascinate’s release date into early fall does make sense, especially considering the Motorola Droid X is going to launch tomorrow and the Motorola Droid 2 presumably sometime in mid to late August. The tracker, which is run by couple Ivan and Irina Podorozhnikovymi, was raided by the Russian Federation Ministry of Internal Affairs Investigation Committee (maybe we’ll call them the RFMIAIC for short) on May 26th 2009. The investigation committee claimed that the site was “a major source of pre-release cammed movies with links to piracy groups outside the country.” A little over a year later, the committee has now filed formal charges against the couple who are also known as 'Ripper' and 'Nadezhda' on the web. Ripper and Nadezhda could be facing up to six years in jail for their heinous crimes against humanity. And just when you thought the madness was over, it turns out that the site’s top might also get thrown under the copyright infringement bus. Luckily for them, Russian law dictates that there must be evidence of some sort of profit being made in order to go through with the prosecution. There are even claims that some individuals downloaded new movie releases from interfilm and placed them onto their own sites. Nothing is certain yet, but police are looking into launching full-blown investigations into these branch sites. In any event, let’s hope that this charge doesn’t snowball into something that will castrate the web for the pirates out there. For Android phones rooting the phones an installing a custom ROM is part of the appeal to many people. It let’s you get the great hardware of say an EVO 4G, but put the newest version of Android up there, or add whatever enhancement the community put into the OS version you choose. Motorola doesn’t seem too happy about having their phones rooted by the community, and is looking to block that ability on the Droid X and Droid 2. To do this, Motorola is using a system called eFuse which will routinely check the bootloader, kernel and ROM on the phones and compare them to those that are coded in. If any of these elements are different, eFuse will corrupt the bootloader, and effectively brick the phone, rendering it useless. To get the phone back to a working order you’d have to talk to Verizon and hope that the company helps you fix the problem somehow. If this does mean that the Droid X and Droid 2 cannot be rooted, it’s fairly depressing news. It likely won’t make much of a difference to most users, but it seems to go against the whole ideals of Android. Being able to change the experience as you see fit goes along with the open-source ideals of the platform. Without that, you have to rely on Motorola and Verizon to put out updates, and can’t do it yourself. There are bound to be some people who just want the chance to run stock Android 2.2 or even a Cyanogen ROM on the Droid X rather than Motorola’s 2.1 with Blur. Microsoft is making a very smart move by providing incentives for developers making applications for their upcoming OS, Windows Phone 7. Android and iOS obviously have a big gap on Windows Phone 7 as each have 225,000 and 65,000 applications in their respective marketplaces. While I honestly do not expect Microsoft to catch either of them in terms of number of applications, with incentives such as free tools for development and test handsets as well as guaranteed revenue in some cases, Microsoft might be able to attract a considerable amount of users with high-quality, exclusive applications. As far as what these applications will be, who knows. But I can say with pretty good confidence that the main categories of media, navigation, and gaming should be covered thoroughly in order for consumers to see real value in the handsets. While the success of Windows Phone 7 hang in the balance, this is definitely a step in the right direction. To me, hardware takes a backseat to software so long as it has enough juice to power the OS. While a phone might be the sexiest things on the streets, if it can’t perform basic tasks, it will end up back at the store very very quickly. For Motorola the Droid platform has really taken off and allowed the brand to reinvent itself and completely remove memories of the RAZR. Admit it, you had one. With this being the sequel to the original Droid there have been a lot of improvements and more room for you to take full advantage of the ever growing 90,000 app strong Android Store: new 1GHz processor, 3G Mobile HotSpot capabilities, expandable mini SD memory and Adobe Flash Player 10.1 ready. (Editor note: Flash 10.1 capable, when Froyo arrives) Form and Function From appearance to actually handling the phone every assumption confirms the obvious, the Droid X is a large phone. It measures in at 5.0 x 2.6 x 0.4, weighs 5.4 ounces where the first Droid came in at 4.55” x 2.35” x 0.55” and 6.0 ounces. If you were in middle school growing half an inch, broadened shoulders and gained a some weight these numbers would be a good thing, if you’re a phone this may not appeal to everyone. The Droid X’s screen is 4.3 inches and has a 16:9 format displaying a consistently rich color WVGA 854 x 480. Even thought dpi has been bumped down 37 points to 228 from the first Droid, it will take a pretty particular eye to notice an ounce of difference. Still a fantastic display regardless. On the right side of the phone, you will find all your traditional soft keys. Top right a universal volume control for ear and speaker volume control and the X has also retained the cleverly placed camera button. Front side you will find another set of soft-touch keys however forget everything you learned from your original Droid. Positions for all buttons have been given a new home with the exception of the Search key. The Back has been replaced by Option, Home has taken the place of Option, and Back is your new Home key. Old: Back, Option Home, Search. New: Option, Home, Back, Search. Study up. Flip the Droid X over to see 8 megapixel camera capable of capturing 720p video paired with two extremely bright LEDs for illuminating any subject matter or studio apartment depending on your immediate needs. Finally on the left side you’ll discover the mini USB charging location and below that a micro-HDMI output. A pretty unique technology for mobile phones but the HDMI output is not like plugging in a laptop. Connect the micro-HDMI and HDMI cable into a TV, the phone home screen won’t display however once any media is selected to play the picture will immediately be displayed on the TV in 720p. Don’t tell your digital camera. The Innerworkings Shipped with Android 2.1, the software carries an excellent presentation and is very snappy. Customize all seven home screens to your hearts desire with the ability to move apps, add widgets and even folders. The Droid X comes pre-bundled with the official Twitter application and Facebook too (honorable mention Myspace). Upon initial startup, the phone will prompt you to load these networks and depending on how you look at it conveniently or inconveniently add your follows and friends to contacts. If you are like me and consider this is 100% nuisance, you will need to take a few extra steps in account settings to remove the import. Separate from that, all your traditional e-mail services are straight forward to setup exchange included. After setting those up, I highly recommend visiting the app drawer and dragging the Universal Inbox to your home screen to effectively manage all accounts. Again keep in mind if you are running Facebook and Twitter, your messages from these services will also pull to this inbox. Configure as necessary. Regardless of how much each home screen is changed, shifted, modified the phone dialer, app drawer and phone contacts will remain at the bottom for easy access. Final Touches From a smart phone perspective, the latest installment of Android packaged with the Droid X is a combination that cannot be ignored. As far as technology is concerned I would not consider this phone on cutting edge of all that is geek but definitely a front runner. With features like three microphones, one noise canceling and two customizable for input, these are the kind of common sense yet untapped functions advanced smart phone users are wanting. Computing power of the Droid series is probably the strongest out there but probably like many Android-heads out there, some may pass up the Droid X for smaller offerings like the Droid Incredible or even hold of for the Droid 2. What will you do? But if you are lucky enough to get your hands on a Droid X today, don’t forget to check your OTA updates!
